Superman: Special Reports
Brainiac - Part 1 (of 3)
Last
updated: October 7, 2004
The Amazing Brainiac
Brainiac
is introduced to the re-booted Superman in Adventures of Superman
#438, (penned by John Byrne with art by Jerry Ordway and John
Beatty). Clark Kent, Jimmy Olsen and Cat Grant are visiting a circus
that has a mentalist named The Amazing Brainiac. Jimmy and Cat learn
that Brainiac is really a middle-aged man named Milton Moses Fine
who has a drinking problem and who suffers from bad headaches.
Fine's
common-law wife and assistant, Janet Jones, has little sympathy for
him. She wants him to use his powers to make money in the stock
market. Fine tells her that would be wrong. "I shouldn't even
have these powers. No human being should! That's why I get these
awful headaches... why my poor pitiful hours of sleep are filled
with such nightmares! I've been given the power to probe into the
minds of men, and the things I've seen there... the awful things..."
To
Cat and Jimmy, Fine relates his dreams of a mind that has touched
his. This mind claims to be Vril Dox, a scientist and humanitarian
from the distant planet Colu. Dox tells Fine that his body (greened
skinned and blond haired) was accidentally destroyed. Only his mind
has survived.
Suddenly,
Fine collapses, grabbing his head and yelling, "It's DOX!! He's
close! He's trying to... enter my mind...". In another part of
the circus, Clark also reels in pain. Switching to Superman, he
follows the source of the pain -- to Brainiac's tent.
The
reader immediately knows something serious has happened to Fine.
While he looks the same, his word balloons are black, with white
lettering. That, and he pounds Superman with psychic blasts. When
Superman calls the mentalist by his stage name, Fine's possessor
decides that he likes the name and will use it when he becomes
master of the world (begin ominous soundtrack!).
Brainiac
(Vril Dox) is surprised by the latent power in Fine's body. Even
after blasting Superman several times, he says he has been using but
a tiny portion of the untapped power within this pathetic body, and
that, "Locked within this mortal brain are powers such as we of
Colu could only have dreamed!"
With
help from Janet, Superman is able to knock Fine unconscious --
ending the attack. Fine is hospitalized in a psychiatric ward.
Neither Superman nor the doctors seem to believe him when he warns
that Vril Dox is real - and he will be back.
Another
Fine Mess
In
Superman #20, Fine, learning of Janet's death, loses control
of his body to Vril Dox, and escapes during the funeral service. In
Adventures of Superman #445 (written by Ordway), we learn
that Fine's body is rejecting Dox's alien life-force, and that
Brainiac is trying to find an organic serum to cure himself.
Brainiac murders vagrants for their spinal fluid and, later, for
their brains (anybody else having images of old horror movies?).
When he captures Cat and Jimmy, he decides to lure Superman to his
hideout.
While
Brainiac's body is still that of Fine's overweight, middle-aged
Caucasian frame, he wears a snazzy pink and black one-piece garment.
The goatee survives, but the hair has been shaved off, except for a
long tuft of hair on the crown of his head. Fine's skin is peeling
away, revealing green skin underneath.
Unknown
to Brainiac, Fine's body has a brain tumor. It is never made clear
how Fine's brain tumor may be connected to his body's rejection of
Dox. Similarly, the connection between Fine's mental powers and Vril
Dox's own abilities is never clearly explained. Although later
stories imply Dox was highly intelligent on Colu (a trait also seen
in his descendants), there is no indication that he possessed mental
or psychic powers before his discorporation. That he had some such
abilities is evident from the fact that his spirit survives the
destruction of his original body somehow and is able to possess
Fine's body on distant Earth.
Apart
from the reference by Fine that he can read minds and to Brainiac's
comments about his possessed body's untapped powers, we don't know
much about Fine's powers, either as an individual or as contributor
to Brainiac's powers. We later see that Brainiac will complain about
the body's limited data storage abilities. Despite the apparent
power of Fine's mind, too often, Brainiac will 'short circuit'
during critical confrontations. And speaking of confrontations, back
to the story in progress...
When
Superman arrives, Brainiac decides to probe Superman's mind to find
out his secrets and fears. What Brainiac doesn't know is that this
just isn't a good time to tick Superman off. Superman has recently
returned from a "pocket" universe, where three madmen
(Kryptonians from that universe) have killed everyone on their
Earth. Superman felt that he had no choice but to execute them, and
he is struggling to come to terms with his actions (Superman
#21, Adventures of Superman #444, and Superman #22).
Superman
allows Brainiac to see his anger -- and the resulting mental battle
causes a huge explosion that leaves Brainiac unconscious and in
custody. Brainiac's tampering has important consequences to Superman
- leading to Superman's self-exile in space (that arc has been
released in trade paperback). But that's another story.
The
Luthor/Brainiac Team
Luthor,
ever resourceful, is able to gain possession of Brainiac's body. He
has the brain tumor removed and inserts a special device to control
Brainiac. Luthor also provides Brainiac with a psi-amplifier, to
better mentally attack Superman. Brainiac is shaved bald so that the
circuitry can be connected to his head, and the mechanical frame
becomes a permanent feature on Brainiac's cranium.
Superman
recognizes the source of the attacks on him and confronts Brainiac,
but Brainiac manages to both fake his own death and turn the tables
on Luthor. Brainiac gains control only briefly, for in Superman
#27, a new "Gangbuster" invades LexCorp to attack Luthor
(the original Gangbuster is sidelined with a broken back). Brainiac
intervenes with a mental attack, but "Gangbuster" repulses
the attack, and Brainiac collapses, allowing Luthor to regain
control.
Luthor
arranges to keep Brainiac sedated, but in Superman #28, when
Superman leaves for space, Brainiac is instantly aware and tells
Luthor, "I can't feel his mind anymore! He's gone!" This
mental connection or awareness between Brainiac and Superman
surfaces in other stories also.
Brainiac
remains as a backstory until Superman #35, in which Ordway
writes of the comatose Brainiac and his dreams alongside a story of
the also comatose Morgan Edge, who fights off death in the form of
the Black Racer. There's lots of fun for Silver Age fans, as we see
homages to classic stories (Superman trapped in a birdcage, the
living Brainiac-ship, shrinking a city into a bottle). The major
advancement of the story is that Brainiac learns to free his astral
form from his trapped body.
In
"The Brainiac Trilogy" (penned by Roger Stern and George
Perez) in Action Comics #647-649, Superman reviews recent
events and realizes that Luthor and Brainiac must be working
together. Brainiac, who seems to have some mental connection to
Superman, knows that Superman is aware of him. He acts quickly,
taking mental control over Luthor's aide, Happersen, and eventually
the other LexCorp employees. He uses mechanical devices to
strengthen his control.
In
Action Comics #649, Brainiac tells Luthor that he worked for
the Computer Tyrants on his home planet, Colu. When he failed them,
his body was disintegrated. Somehow, his mind survived and was drawn
across space to the brain of Milton Moses Fine.
Meanwhile,
Brainiac's body is submerged in a biochemical bath while it is
treated with recombinant DNA and bionic enhancements. Superman
arrives just as Brainiac emerges from the tank, now green skinned,
with a fit, trim and muscular body. His mustache and beard are
yellow, and he has metallic devices attached to his skull and back.
Brainiac
launches a mental attack on Superman, but once again is defeated by
the power of Superman's mind. Brainiac manages to escape in a
star-ship (later called his "head-ship"), designed as a
robotic face. He promises to return, and Superman promises to be
waiting for him.

An article on the Disney / Fox merger.. from the "Forbes" website...

Media & Entertainment
Although rumored for some time, yesterday it was officially announced that The Walt Disney Company will acquire 21st Century Fox for an astounding $52.4 billion in one of the biggest deals the entertainment industry has seen. The all-stock transaction will include Twentieth Century Fox movie and TV studios, most of its cable networks and international assets. Not included in the deal are the Fox network and Fox News.
What does this mean for the consumer? It’s likely, analysts say, that the impact will be very big over time.
The deal values the 21st Century Fox assets in the transaction at $66.1 billion, including $13.7 billion in Fox debt ($28 a share). The enterprise value of the deal is $69 billion. Disney expects to see $2 billion in cost savings from combining Disney and Fox’s overlapping businesses within two years of the deal’s closing. Disney expects the regulatory review of the acquisition to be approved and to close within 12 to 18 months.
“The consumer will likely not benefit from such a deal,” says eMarketer’s principal analyst for video, Paul Verna. “This acquisition is about the Murdoch family cashing out and Disney trying to future-proof its empire. There is no benefit to consumers that I can envision. If anything, the alliance will result in fewer choices and higher prices, since it will consolidate ownership of important content and distribution properties under one roof. This is especially true given yesterday’s repeal of net neutrality.”
Disney's chairman and CEO, Robert Iger, who will stay on in his role through 2021 to oversee the integration of the assets, maintains that this will ultimately benefit the consumer.
“The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before,” he said in a statement. “We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings.”
The deal, he adds, will substantially expand Disney’s international reach, allowing the company to offer world-class storytelling and innovative distribution platforms to more consumers in key markets around the world.

“The bottom line is that consumers care about cost, convenience and quality,” explains Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “If the deal enables people to have an even greater array of entertainment options for a lower cost, that's a good thing. However, a byproduct of consolidation is that it can often create a fragmented marketplace with audiences scrambling to figure out which streaming service or platform best serves their needs.”
One thing that actively frustrates consumers is red tape, says Amobee principal brand analyst Jonathan Cohen. “Disney acquiring Fox is going to make a lot of it disappear. For years fans have wanted to see the X-Men interacting with Spider-Man and the Avengers in the movies, and now it can happen. Anastasia might have been a Fox Animation Studios film, but to the audience she felt like a Disney princess; with the acquisition she will be.”
Meanwhile, at an advertiser level, brands should be able to target fans of these genres at an even greater scale, Cohen explains. “For instance, if an advertiser approaches Disney about wanting to target superhero fans, a buy around Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC could be up-sold to include purchasing ad time around Legion on FX and Runaways on Hulu, a platform Disney will now own a majority of. Being able to better monetize genre content could also benefit consumers, as the more revenue it generates, the more likely similar shows will be green-lit."
The effects of the deal spilled over into social media. Cohen did a little digging and found out that since the acquisition was announced yesterday, Twitter was buzzing with activity surrounding the deal. According to Amobee, there was 59% more digital content engagement around Marvel versus Capcom yesterday compared to the day before. Recent editions of the video game franchise have lacked X-Men characters, and now that Disney and Marvel fully own the X-Men I.P. again, fans are hoping that Marvel will again be willing to showcase those characters in new video games.
Regarding the news that the X-Men and Fantastic Four movie franchises will now revert back to Marvel and Disney, there were 32,000 tweets mentioning the X-Men and 14,900 tweets mentioning the Fantastic Four. Twitter sentiment around those X-Men tweets were 69% positive, 29% neutral and 2% negative. Twitter sentiment around those Fantastic Four tweets was 98% positive, 1% neutral and 1% negative.
Around the assumption that the Fox character Anastasia would finally become a Disney princess, there were 4,900 tweets mentioning Anastasia, with sentiment around those tweets being 56% positive, 34% neutral and 10% negative. Around Iger's giving fans a public assurance that there can still be 'R' rated Deadpool movies at Disney, there were 29,000 tweets around Deadpool, with sentiment around those tweets being 44% positive, 53% neutral and 3% negative.
While Disney will continue with family-friendly content such as Frozen, it will now also be able to deliver Fox's edgier content from the likes of FX and National Geographic. The deal also gives Disney a majority control of Hulu: Fox and Disney each have a 30% stake so under the new deal Disney will have a 60% ownership, while Comcast/NBCUniversal owns 30% and Time Warner 10%. Also included is a 50% share of Endemol Shine Group, the Star India satellite service and Fox’s 39% interest in European satellite broadcaster Sky (Fox will continue to pursue its acquisition of the remaining 61% stake with the intention of Disney taking it over when the transaction is completed).
As Disney pulls its massive library of blockbuster hits, including Star Wars, out of Netflix, the company will gain leverage by amassing more premium content under one roof. X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises will be returned to Marvel, as will almost all of Marvel’s movie properties.
A main focus is Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service expected in 2019. Iger said in an interview on Good Morning America that Disney isn’t expecting to reach the scale of Netflix quickly, but certainly aims over time to be an able competitor. More importantly, he said, is that the company believes the way of the future is to be able to reach consumers directly. The OTT business is a very competitive one with Netflix planning to put $8 billion into original content next year and Amazon $4.5 billion.
This, says Verna, is where the trickle-down effect takes place. “When consumers make decisions about the entertainment services they subscribe to, they think primarily about price and channel availability. In the digital realm, they also increasingly consider things like device access, simultaneous streams and picture quality. I don’t see a way in which the Disney-Fox combination will help with any of those points. When you layer in the loss of net neutrality, you also have the risk that sprawling, integrated companies such as Disney-Fox (and Comcast/NBC Universal, for that matter) will prioritize their own content on their networks, thereby further depriving consumers of choice. Netflix recently increased its prices to offset its massive content expenditures. I don’t see that trend moving in the opposite direction in the foreseeable future, either for Netflix or for any of the entertainment conglomerates, including Disney-Fox.”
“It will be incumbent upon all players in the streaming space to carefully delineate why their service offers the best content at the best price to avoid customer confusion and frustration,” says Dergarabedian. “Of course, the combined horsepower of Disney along with the Fox-based assets will be a powerful draw for consumers both on the small screen and the big screen.”

An article from the News Website.. "The Daily Beast" .. about the Disney / Fox merger....
Don’t
be tempted by the idea of superheroes colliding in an Avengers/X-Men
crossover. The downsides of Disney potentially acquiring Fox outweigh
the benefits for fans.

“The
Avengers can team up with the X-Men!” was one of the staler takes
to circulate late Monday after news broke that Disney is looking to
do a 21st Century Fox mambo and acquire
most of the company.
It sparked a lot of speculation online that Disney is looking to
reunite its X-Men and Fantastic Four
franchises
with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is certainly enticing. But
at the center of all of this, it's troublesome that the excitement
over seeing Magneto versus Thor has outweighed the negative aspects
of a potential Fox acquisition by Disney.
Though
talks are currently off the table, Disney has long been interested in
creating their own streaming service to rival Netflix and Hulu. As it
turns out, it's not even the prospect of bringing the X-Men into the
Marvel fold that's the most alluring to them. Fox owns the rights to
properties like Buffy
the Vampire Slayer,
The
Simpsons,
Bob's
Burgers,
and Futurama
which would lure viewers to their rival streaming service,
particularly if those shows are kept off Netflix and Hulu, along with
all of Disney's movies and the films in 21st Century Fox's catalog.
For Disney, this is all about control of the future and the future is
streaming.
A
few things weren't in discussion to be acquired, like F/X and Fox
News and Fox Sports, mostly because the latter could bring antitrust
issues into play. Disney owning Fox News and ABC News and also Fox
Sports and ESPN would be a dangerous monopoly that the government and
consumers would fight back against. But even without that particular
monopoly, Disney would still wield a hell of a lot of control in the
film industry if they were to acquire Fox.
Just
take a look at the films this year that were both Disney and Fox
properties. Beauty
and the Beast.
Ghost
in the Shell.
Star
Wars: The Last Jedi.
Guardians
of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.
Thor:
Ragnarok. Murder on the Orient Express.
Alien:
Covenant.
Logan.
War of the Planet of the Apes. Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle.
That's a hefty pull of this year's film revenue and also most of the
major releases from this year. Disney owning more films and producing
nearly half the studio movies released in any given year could become
troubling for filmmakers and even critics.
Just
this week, The
Los Angeles Times
revealed that they've been banned
from film screenings
by Disney: "This year, Walt Disney Co. studios declined to offer
The
Times
advance screenings, citing what it called unfair coverage of its
business ties with Anaheim.
The
Times
will continue to review and cover Disney movies and programs when
they are available to the public." Since the announcement,
journalists from Flavorwire, The
Washington Post,
and The A.V. Club have stood in solidarity with The
Times
and said they will not cover Disney films until the ban is lifted.
When
you think about Disney pettily wielding their power against critics
for purported unfair reporting, which is eerily similar to some other
person in power this year whose name escapes my mind, think about how
much worse that would be if Disney also controlled Fox's properties.
It's not the first time a studio has done this and it probably won't
be the last, but giving Disney that much power in Hollywood doesn't
particularly bode well for anyone besides Disney. Nevermind the fact
that it also doesn't bode well for Fox employees who have jobs that
would become obsolete once Disney absorbs the company.
But
on the subject of the X-Men, as
I've noted before,
Fox is doing rather creative things with the franchise thanks to
Logan,
Legion,
and the upcoming New Mutants and it's probably the separation from
the Marvel Cinematic Universe that allows it that freedom. Having
these mutants be beholden to the world that Marvel and Disney have
created could be stifling. Marvel Studios is like a well-oiled
machine at this point, yes, and its film and television schedule is
planned, meticulously, years in advance. But what this means is that
there’s little room for error or experimentation. Outside of
anomalies like Thor:
Ragnarok and
Guardians
of the Galaxy,
each film manages to maintain the same tone and visual aesthetic.
With Marvel, you know what you’re going to get. The same goes with
Pixar. Or Disney's rabid obsession with turning all of their animated
films into “live-action” ones instead of making new animated
classics.
Fox's
problems with their Marvel franchises can be fixed in-house. 1.) Get
rid of X-Men director and producer Bryan Singer; at this point, we've
had enough of his vision and it’s bordering on repetitive. 2.) Put
some respect on the Fantastic Four's name, one of Marvel's greatest
comic book franchises. The success of Legion
opens the door for a killer Fantastic Four television series, where
it would probably do much better than it has in bloated blockbusters.
3.) Give Storm her own fucking movie. If this one doesn't happen
soon, then I'm going to be signing a petition to let Disney do
whatever it wants with Fox.
