Insiders – Interview with Hanno Koffler
This month’s interview features our favourite German actor, Hanno Koffler. Hanno is known for his amazing performances in movies like Nacht vor Augen (2008), Freier Fall (2013) and his most recent coup Härte (2015). If you only know Hanno from his onscreen appearances, this is your chance to catch up!
Q: Hey Hanno. Congratulations, you just got nominated as Best Actor for the second year in a row! How are you feeling right now?
A: I’m feeling awesome right now. It’s great to have your work appreciated by the business and colleagues, especially since I’m really proud of the work I’ve done in “Härte”. Playing Andreas Marquardt wasn’t an easy role, it was a really special and intense work, so right now I’m just feeling thankful for all the appreciation shown for the movie.
Q: Did you always want to become an actor?
A: Nah, there were a bunch of things I considered doing when I was younger. I always liked the idea of being a craftsman, like a woodworker or maybe even a gardener. Then again I also thought I was going to be a Rockstar for quite some time… which hasn’t worked out so well.
Q: Hanno the Rockstar, wouldn’t that be something. What’s your favourite band?
A: Hmm… tough question. Back in the days it used to be Nirvana, but I really like the Beatles and I’m a big fan of Elvis Presley. Depending on the mood I’m also into Bob Dylan or even Schubert and Mozart… I think I need a pre-made list with answers for questions like this, it’s really difficult to settle for one.
Q: Becoming an actor is a very profound experience – things from deep inside your soul are washed to the surface, things you maybe never knew even existed. What was the most important thing you learned about yourself in the process of becoming an actor?
A: I guess one of the most profound lessons I learned was coming to realize how acting is not about perfection, but rather about accepting your own imperfections and to let them show on the outside. It’s about finding your own truth and building up your own personality. It’s about finding a quiet and true point within yourself from which you can develop into new directions and adapt to new roles. Then there’s body language, controlling your voice and finding the way to your emotionality. It’s also about learning to let everything go.
Q: Did you already find that point?
A: It’s a constant search, really, and I’m not sure if it can ever be wholly found – however the search definitely has made me aware of some of my hurts. Learning how to act is a never-ending process, because it’s a journey to your own personality, which always transforms, grows and changes.
Q: In “Freier Fall” you’re playing the married police officer Mark, who starts a love affair with a homosexual colleague – very much to his own surprise. The film manages to create an incredible atmosphere and intimacy. How do you prepare for a role like that?
A: First of all, by reading the film script. Then it gets trickier: You have to try to understand your character’s world and try to dive into the depths of his mind. Once I feel I have good understanding of my character, I’m giving it all my passion and emotionality to get engaged with the role and just see where things go from there.
Q: So… did “Freier Fall” reveal a formerly unknown passion for the male sex or was it just fantastically played?
A (laughs): It was just fantastically played.
Q: What about Freier Fall 2? Is it just rumours?
A: I really like the idea, especially since it’s extremely rare for German arthouse movies to have a sequel. We had more than 6 millions views on the trailer just from the US, so the interest for Freier Fall has grown to an international level. We have this huge audience from all over the world and lots of questions that still need to be answered, so getting the funding for a sequel would be great. Max Riemelt and me are definitely up for it if we can take a liking to the script and to achieve that the producers and writers need to raise enough money for developing a great story and for making the whole thing happen. It’s still a long way to go, though and the project needs as much support as it can get – there’ll be a crowdfunding campaign soon, so get involved, everyone!
Q: What was the craziest thing you’ve been through while acting?
A: Well, there’s always the good old house ban. We were in this shabby hotel while filming Freier Fall and had a little get-together after we were halfway through with the shooting. We had a few drinks too many and partied until the early morning… until the hotel had enough and we have to pack our things and get going.
Q: In “Härte” you’re playing Andreas Marquardt – a man who’s been through a life of violence, abuse and hatred. What was it like to play that role?
A: It was extremely intense. Above all it was a very special honour to play Andreas – he’s a very authentic person who’s been through a hell hardly anyone of us can begin to understand.
Q: What does Berlin mean to you?
A: Home. Family. Friends. At the same time it can also be stressful and create a longing for the countryside. It’s a bit of a love hate relationship.
Q: In what ways did you experience the change Berlin has underwent in the past 20 years?
A: At one point I was gone for almost a decade and realized that lots had changed when I came back. Just a few hundred meters from here my band used to jam in a little rehearsal space in some worn down backyard. Now the place boasts a 24 hours supermarket, a health care center and tourists everywhere!
Q: Which night clubs do you go to?
A: We usually party at someone’s flat and put on a quality DJ set to get us grooving through the night. Apart from that – Kater Holzig and Berghain are good choices to have a fun night out.
Q: Can you recommend any restaurants for our readers?
A: My all time favourite is Jules Verne on Schlüterstraße, I’ve been going there for years – there’s no way I ever get tired of their Schnitzel. Not too far from here there’s the Antillo – run by real Italians, they cook some great food aswell.
Q: Favourite bar?
A: Don’t really have one. I was having a few drinks at Viktoriabar in Schöneberg the other day, that was pretty cool!

Yesterday, I told the story of Ishtar and Tammuz as our Wisdom Story. You've probably heard of the Ishtar Gate, currently in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, part of which is pictured below. Lions represent Ishtar in this depiction.
For Unitarian Universalists, the Wisdom Story can be an integral part of the worship service on Sundays. The Wisdom Story is often told by the Director of Religious Education with an eye toward educating, reminding, and engaging the whole crowd, regardless of age.
Our service this past Sunday focused on St. Cecilia's day - a day to remember and celebrate music. As part of my Wisdom Story, I wanted to remember and celebrate Tammuz, the Babylonian god who represented fertility and played a magical flute. Tammuz's story echoes the myth of Demeter raging down to Hades to rescue her daughter Persephone. In this story, Tammuz is killed by his mother, Ishtar (known even earlier in Ancient Sumer as Inanna), who later regrets her decision and storms down to the underworld to rescue and revive Tammuz so that there can be celebration, food, and music once again. In the end, she is only allowed to enter the underworld having given up all her divine finery wearing a plain robe, and it is her earnest regret and love for Tammuz that revives him. As she weeps, her tears save Tammuz by bringing him back to life, and Ishtar is reunited with her son for six months of each year when he can bring life and celebration to the earth. The other six months of each year he remains in the underworld, although the purpose of that isn't entirely clear.
Tammuz shows up in the Bible, too. Ezekiel 8:14-15 King James Version

Sunrise in Jerusalem - By Alex Levin
Sunrise in Jerusalem - By Alex Levin
Tammuz (Tamuz) is the fourth of the 12 months of the Jewish calendar, counting from Nisan. The month of Tammuz begins the “season” of the summer. The three months of this season are Tammuz, Av and Elul.
The 17th day of Tammuz—a fast day that commemorates the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans (in 69 C.E.)—marks the beginning of a period known as “the Three Weeks.”
This is an annual mourning period, when we mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple and the cause of our current ongoing exile. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the Ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame (423 BCE and 69 C.E., respectively). Because of this and numerous other tragedies that occurred throughout Jewish history during this period, we lessen the extent of our rejoicing during the three-week period leading up to it.
See: Tisha B'Av and the Three Weeks
Why the excessive mourning for more than 2,000 years?
G‑d is our Father, and we are His children. And during galut (exile), we constitute a dysfunctional family. We have been expelled from our Father’s home, and our relationship is strained. This is certainly not the way the relationship should be—and this wasn’t always the case. There was a time when we were coddled by our Father’s embrace. His love for us manifested itself in many forms, including miracles, prophets, abundant blessings, and a land flowing with milk and honey. At the center of our relationship was the Holy Temple, G‑d’s home, where He literally dwelt among His people and where His presence was tangible.
All the suffering that has been our lot since the day the Temple was destroyed is a result of our exiled state. This is why we mourn the destruction of the Temples. We believe with perfect faith and pray that the day is near when we will be returned to our Father’s home and once again feel His love. We look forward to a brighter future, when the world will finally reach the culmination of its purpose, and be infused with everlasting peace and goodness.

The Italian film star chats about ''The Matrix'' sequels and ''Brotherhood of the Wolf''

Brotherhood of the Wolf
TYPE
Movie
GENRE
Mystery Foreign Language Thriller
If Italian actress Monica Bellucci becomes a full-fledged sex symbol in the U.S. — as she already is in Europe — she’ll be a most unusual one. Unlike your average Hollywood hottie, the 33-year-old is fluent in three languages, and when she mentions Michelangelo and Raffaello, she’s not talking about ninja turtles.
Bellucci drew attention here in 2000 when Miramax distributed ”Malena,” an Italian period piece that cast her as a small-town beauty whose looks spark obsession in men and rage in women. That role led the Wachowski brothers to cast Bellucci in 2003’s sequels to ”The Matrix.” Until then, U.S. audiences can see her in ”Brotherhood of the Wolf,” the new foreign blockbuster that sets ”Matrix”-style action in pre-revolutionary France. Recently, Bellucci told EW.com about her fondness for onscreen nudity, her multi-national career, and her thoughts on Britney Spears.
Why did you decide to do the ”Matrix” movies?
I didn’t want to do an American movie just because it’s American, even though I love American movies, because they’re so big. ”The Matrix” was so different from European movies — such beautiful, beautiful action. But ”The Matrix” for me is much more than an action film. It’s a film about the logic of life; it’s a love story. There are so many deep things inside; if you want to see them, you can see them. And if you want to just enjoy the action, you can do that too. When I saw it I was entranced. I said, ”Wow, I want to be in a movie like that.”
Many American actresses are uncomfortable with on-screen nudity. You don’t seem to have that problem.
Actually, I’m against it being used gratuitously. But I think that when nudity is well filmed, it’s beautiful. In ”Brotherhood,” my character is a prostitute, a courtesan. In the beginning, when you see her in a love scene and she’s naked, it’s filmed to look like a painting, so there it’s in very good taste… One reason that I’m comfortable with nudity is because I come from Europe, and I have a good relation with my body. Europeans are different, even in the way we lay on the beach nude. Why do we have to be scared about nudity? Many feel offended by it, but nudity is like who we are without the dressing, like what we leave behind. Nudity is pure; if not, why were Michelangelo and Raffaello so interested in it? Nudity is something magic.

.. A movieline article about Embeth Davidtz...This means that Steven Spielberg is officially casting Embeth Davidtz as Lana Lang in his upcoming Superman movie... copy-and-pasted from the URL: https://lebeauleblog.com/2018/04/14/embeth-davidtz-signal-from-the-second-tier/
Embeth Davidtz: Signal From the Second Tier
lebeauPosted onApril 14, 2018Movieline Articles, MoviesLeave a comment
You may not know her name, but odds are you are familiar with Embeth Davidtz’s work. She has appeared in cult favorites like Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness and Danny DeVito’s Matilda. Early on in her career, a small part in Schindler’s List raised Davidtz’s Hollywood profile, but the actress says the career boost it provided didn’t last long. Over the last two decades, Davidtz has endured a series of ups and downs without ever becoming famous. In recent years, you may have seen her on TV shows like Ray Donovan and Mad Men or playing Peter Parker’s mother in the Amazing Spider-Man movies. Davidtz discussed what it’s like to be a working actress in this profile from the April 1998 issue of Movieline magazine.
Imagine you’re legendary director Robert Altman. You’re casting The Gingerbread Man, a rain-soaked, erotic thriller based on the John Grisham formula–you know, Southern lawyer overreaches and is lured into a web of intrigue and murder. You’ve already hired Kenneth Branagh as the lawyer. Now you need an actress who can play Southern trailer trash, someone sexy and seedy who isn’t afraid of full frontal nudity. Do you call Jennifer Jason Leigh? Elisabeth Shue?
Nope. You call Embeth Davidtz, the 31-year-old, Indiana-born, South Africa-raised actress who thinks Americans are much too uptight about nudity. “It’s batty. You show one bit of nipple and it’s all over. What’s so bad about a woman’s body?”
PolyGram, the producing studio, upon hearing of Altman’s choice, made noises about wanting an actress with a bigger resume. Says Davidtz, “I wonder if the fact that they didn’t want me made Bob want me all the more. At any rate, he put himself out there for me and afterwards, I felt I had something to prove.”
Davidtz had already proved herself for another legendary director, Steven Spielberg, who, after seeing her in a TV miniseries, cast her as Helen Hirsch, Ralph Fiennes’s cleaning lady/love slave in Schindler’s List. Though her part was small, the Schindler phenomenon was so big everybody connected to the film basked in its glory. “I was amazed at the rosy glow that can be around one when you’re in a film that’s done well,” says Davidtz in her elegant and lilting South African accent. We’re having afternoon tea at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. The lobby is brushstroked by sunlight which makes the rosy glow literal as Davidtz recalls those sanguine days. “Producers vied to be my friend. They wanted to take me to lunch and dinner and away for weekends. I thought, ‘How lovely. This town loves me. Isn’t it nice to be in America.'”
Then it came time for Davidtz to choose her next role. Expectations were high. She elected to do Murder in the First, which starred Christian Slater and about which she has little to say. Then she did the Merchant Ivory film Feast of July, about which she says, “When no one went to see it, there came the subtle chill. It was harder to get people on the phone.” As if to mimic Davidtz’s career slide, the lobby’s rosy glow fades as the sun eases below the horizon. “There came this crushing realization that Schindler’s List was now 19 months old and I wasn’t hot anymore. I was heartbroken. But, in a way, it was good. I needed to learn how to navigate my way through this business. I needed to lose my virginity in this town.”
You could say she lost it twice, since she did get what might have been a successful part–in Danny DeVito’s kid pic Matilda–only to have an unpleasant experience in a movie that was disappointing. “The kids would stand at the bloody craft services table eating sweets and then they’d start bouncing off the walls. The chaos turned me upside down.”
All this after what had not been an easy start in Hollywood to begin with. Armed with a degree in English lit, theater experience and $3,000, Davidtz arrived in Los Angeles in 1991, knowing no one. “When I first walked down Melrose [Avenue] I was struck by its post-apocalyptic ugliness, and what dawned on me then was the enormity of what it means to begin again with nothing. I was in a state of terror about surviving.” She took a waitress job at (where else?) the Nowhere Cafe and worked in telemarketing for the Los Angeles Opera.
One night, driving home in the rain, her VW bug stalled in the middle lanes of the Santa Monica Freeway and she had to make her way trudging along surface streets “in a very dodgy neighborhood near Western and Beverly.” She stuck out her thumb. A car stopped. “I was crying and drenched, and I said to the guy, ‘I hope you’re not some fucking crazy who could kill me, and if you’re not, could you please give me a ride home?'” He did. A month later, Davidtz got a job in Sam Raimi’s film Army of Darkness, but it paid so little that afterwards she had to go back to waitressing. Given her struggles you can see why this actress is drawn to roles like Helen in Schindler’s List and the troubled character she played in The Gingerbread Man.
Since Davidtz doesn’t have much to say about the film she recently starred in with Denzel Washington, Fallen (“It’s a big, glitzy studio production”), I ask her to compare the filmmakers she’s clearly enjoyed working with most, Altman and Spielberg. “They’re polar opposites. Bob gives you the space to do what you want to do, he forces you to keep searching, and he doesn’t smother you with love and affection. Steven is controlling. He knows what he wants and he’s very specific, and when you get it, he hugs you and tells you it was great.”
In talking to Davidtz, you get a sense of the struggle faced by actresses in the second tier. She frets that she hasn’t been quite passionate enough when pursuing these coveted roles. “The smartest people I know have that extra edge. The risk is always there that you’ll look terribly undignified and slobbering, and inside I cringe about that, but I should be more aggressive. I wonder how I could be … without dressing up as Catwoman.”
“What’s next?”
“I have nothing lined up except a safari in Botswana.”
“What would you like to say to your fans?”
“Where are you? Who are you?”
