Part of the military, she served at a concentration camp where she tortured and murdered many men on her home planet Krypton. After she was finally caught, Faora was judged and sentenced to 300 Kryptonian Years in The Phantom Zone for her numerous crimes against the Kryptonian people. Creation Issue #471 Issue #471 Faora Hu-UI was created by Cary Bates and Curt Swan, and her first appearance came in Action Comics #471, which was released in June, 1977. Character Evolution Silver Age / Earth-One Earth-One - Faora Hu-UI Earth-One - Faora Hu-UI While imprisoned, Faora would find herself plotting ways of getting her hands on other male Kryptonians including The Man of Steel himself Superman. After escaping The Phantom Zone, Faora would go after Superman and in their first encounter in battle, she forces him to flee. Modern Age / Pocket Universe Pocket Universe - Zaora Pocket Universe - Zaora After the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Faora appearing in a pocket universe created by the Cosmic Entity known as the Time Trapper. Within the pocket universe, Faora was known as Zaora and she was accompanied by fellow Kryptonians General Zod and Quex-Ul. These three would trick the Lex Luthor of that pocket universe into releasing them out of the Phantom Zone. New 52 / Prime Earth Prime Earth - Faora Hu-UI Prime Earth - Faora Hu-UI Faora was a member of Krypton's military forces who despised Krypton's ideals of peace and science and desired a return to the old days, when Krypton was a brutal militaristic empire. In time, she met Dru-Zod, a colonel who shared the same dream. In time, Zod gathered a group of like-minded supporters, but he became especially interested in Faora because of her bloodlust. Faora became complicit in Zod's engineering of a false flag operation, which triggered a war with the alien Char. Jor-El, an old friend of Zod's, discovered the deception and turned Zod over to the authorities. This resulted in the sentencing of Zod and his followers, Faora among them, to the Phantom Zone. But being trapped in the Zone would not mean the end of Zod's villainy or Faora's devotion to him. During their time within the Zone, Zod and Faora became acquainted with the Warworld, a humongous alien war machine and planned to use its endless armies to conquer the outside worlds. Their plan also involved the Kryptonian monster known as Doomsday, also a prisoner within the Zone. Zod and Faora released the beast from his captivity and threw him across the boundaries of the Phantom Zone, weakening them and allowing for their eventual escape. Major Story Arcs Modern Age / Pocket Universe The Death of Zaora Superman Kill's Zaora Superman Kill's Zaora After leaving Phantom Zone, Zaora and her fellow Kryptonians would cause havoc among the humans upon the Earth inside the pocket universe trying to conquer the Earth itself. After they saw how resistant the humans were to their conquest the three Kryptonians destroyed the Earth's atmosphere killing nearly all life on Earth. Superman had to intervene by stripping the three Kryptonians of there powers by using gold kryptonite. After they were left powerless, Superman would completely destroy them by using green kryptonite in a punishment for what they had done on the Earth. New 52 / Prime Earth Arrival at Earth Zod and Faora Vs Superman and Wonder Woman Zod and Faora Vs Superman and Wonder Woman Doomsday's actions allow for Zod's escape to planet Earth but Zod becomes separated from Faora, who remained trapped. To release her, Zod tricks Superman, Jor-El's son, into taking him to his Fortress of Solitude and giving him access to his Phantom Zone Projector, releasing Faora. At first, Faora becomes aggressive and disoriented but exposure to Earth's yellow sun gives her superpowers and restores her sanity. Before long, Superman and his girlfriend Wonder Woman intercept them, engaging in combat. The Amazon Princess beats Faora until Zod threatens to kill Superman unless they are allowed to leave, forcing her to let the Kryptonian criminals escape and ensure Superman's safety. With Superman and Wonder Woman in retreat, Zod and Faora construct a Phantom Zone portal in the South Pacific, using stolen human technology. In all of a sudden, Superman and Woman return, wearing magic armor and seeking a rematch. Zod reveals his plan was that Doomsday would break the barrier between normal space and the Phantom Zone, facilitating an invasion from the War. Although the heroes initially defeat Zod and Faora by detonating their armors at point-blank range, Zod and Faora are empowered a direct beam of sunlight, sent by the Greek god Apollo, who sought revenge from an earlier defeat by Superman, even if it was by proxy. Zod and Faora brutally defeat their opponents and throw them into a nuclear reactor, believing they would no longer be a threat. But while Zod and Faora enter the Phantom Zone in order to liberate the Warworld, Superman and Wonder Woman manage to set off a large nuclear explosion that destroyed the portal, trapping Zod and Faora in the Zone once again. Much later, Batman and Wonder Woman travel to the Phantom Zone, hoping to a find a cure for Superman, who had become a new iteration of Doomsday. They stumble upon Non, who revealed Zod and Faora had mysteriously vanished after Doomsday was released from the Phantom Zone. Powers and Abilities Powers Under a yellow sun, Faora has the same powers as Superman - Freeze breath, flight, super-breath, super-strength, heat-vision, stamina, X-ray vision, durability, and speed. Faora is also an expert hand-to-hand combatant. Kryptonian Physiology: Under the effects of a "yellow" sun, Faora possesses the same potential powers as an average Kryptonian. These include: Solar Energy Absorption: Under optimal conditions, this is the main source of Faora's super powers as they are contingent upon exposure to solar radiation from a yellow sun star system. Her biological make up includes a number of organs which lack analogues in humans and whose functions are unknown. It is believed that between one or more of these and her bio-cellular matrix, "yellow" solar energy is stored for later use. This allows for the use of these powers to fade when yellow solar radiation is not available instead of immediate failure. Heat Vision: Faora can, as a conscious act, fire beams of intense heat at a target by looking at it. She can vary the heat and area affected. Super-Hearing: Faora's hearing is sensitive enough to hear any sound at any volume or pitch. With skill and concentration, she can block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source or frequency. Enhanced Vision Faora's vision processes the entire electromagnetic spectrum as well as allowing vast control over selective perception and focus. This umbrella ability includes the following: Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: Faora can see well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum. She can see and identify radio and television signals as well as all other broadcast or transmitted frequencies. Using this ability, she can avoid detection by radar or satellite monitoring methods. This also allows her to see the aura generated by living thing. Telescopic Vision: This is the ability to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. Though limited, the exact extent of the ability is undetermined. In function, it is similar to the zoom lens on a camera. X-Ray Vision: This is the ability to see through any volume of matter except lead. Faora's can see things behind a solid, opaque object as if it were not there. She can focus this ability to "peel back" layers of an object, allowing hidden image or inner workings to be observed. The exact type of energy perceived - such as x-rays, cosmic rays, or some other energy invisible to normal humans - is unclear. This ability perceives an ambient energy source though, it does not involve the eye projecting a concentrated, possibly toxic, beam to be reflected back from objects. Microscopic Vision: This is the ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the atomic level. Infrared Vision: Faora's can see with better acuity in darkness, and to a degree in total darkness. Flight: Faora is able to manipulate graviton particles to defy the forces of gravity and achieve flight. This ranges from hovering to moving in any posture, in any direction. Invulnerability: Due to the interaction of her dense molecular structure and supercharged bio-electric aura, Faora is nigh-invulnerable to extreme energy forces. In addition, she extends this protection against toxins and diseases. Superhuman Stamina: Faora is able to maintain a continuous strenuous physical action for an indefinite period of time. This based on her body converting yellow solar radiation directly to energy, but is limited by physiological and psychological needs to eat, drink, and sleep. Superhuman Strength: Faora's strength is augmented by yellow solar radiation interacting with the greater than human density, resilience and biological efficiency of her musculature. Her strength is more an act of conscious will on energy fields than actual physical strength. It is this act of conscious will that enables her to perform physical feats that are beyond the mere application force, such as moving a mountain top without said rock crumbling under its own mass. Superhuman Speed: Faora is able to move at incredible speed by sheer force of will. This extends to her perceptions and allows for feats such as catching bullets in mid-flight as well as covering vast distances in little or no time. They discovered bloodstains on the walls, on some clothing, and some cutlery. When asked where the blood had come from, Mary weakly replied that she had been killing mice. Jack the Ripper Suspect Mary rested in peace until 1939 when author William Stewart suggested that Mary was, in fact, Jack the Ripper. And now Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League has severed any and all ties with Knowles, attempting to make his company safe from any sexual predators that may be lurking about. A number of veteran contributors bailed ship over the course of the past few days, as sited by The Hollywood Reporter. And now Alamo Drafthouse is following along. Tim League recently found himself immersed in another sexual assault scandal, when it was discovered that accused sex offender and prolific movie blogger Devin Faraci had been rehired after being fired from the Alamo Drafthouse company following claims made against him. RELATED: James Corden Finally Answers to All Those Ellen Replacement Rumors Tim League dropped a pretty hefty statement late Monday night in regards to his long-standing relationship with Harry Knowles. This all happened amidst the currently ongoing Fantastic Fest in Austin, which was founded by League and Knowles. Before the official statement serving ties with Knowles, it was widely announced that Knowles had stepped away from the movie festival, though he still had writers from Ain't It Cool News covering the event. League now claims that Knowles is no longer affiliated with the company in any capacity. League has come under heavy fire recently for having an unsafe work environment when it comes to sexual predators, with his company referred to as a 'boys club'. The CEO now says he is 'striving to better respond to allegations of sexual assault and harassment, and will take actions so those who work at the theater or attend as a guest are not made to feel unsafe.' Over the weekend, Harry Knowles was accused of sexual assault by a former Drafthouse employee named Jasmin Baker. She had this to say about Knowles' behavior towards her. This charge distribution also creates a radial electrostatic field around the wire decreasing along the wire. The moving external electrons in this electrostatic field are experiencing a changing electrostatic field causing exactly the magnetic effect, repelling when moving against the direction of the current and attracting when moving in the direction of the current. This way the A magnetic potential is based on the real charge distribution of the electrons caused by their acceleration, maintaining the E electric field and the A magnetic potential at the same time. The mysterious property of the matter that the electric potential difference is self maintained by the accelerating electrons in the electric current gives a clear explanation to the basic sentence of the relativity that is the velocity of the light is the maximum velocity of the electromagnetic matter. If the charge could move faster than the electromagnetic field, this self maintaining electromagnetic property of the electric current would be failed. More importantly the accelerating electrons can explain the magnetic induction also. The changing acceleration of the electrons will create a –E electric field by changing the charge distribution, increasing acceleration lowering the charge density and decreasing acceleration causing an increasing charge density. Since the magnetic induction creates a negative electric field as a result of the changing acceleration, it works as a relativistic changing electromagnetic mass. Extra oil can be pushed out of wells by forced water – often inexpensive seawater – but scientists doing experiments in the lab found that sodium in water impedes its ability to push oil out, while other trace elements help. Scientists experiment with various combinations of calcium, magnesium, sulfates and other additives, or "wettability modifiers," in the laboratory first, using the same calcite as is present in the well. The goal is to determine which lead to the most oil recovery from the rock. Vanderbilt University physicist Sokrates Pantelides and postdoctoral fellow in physics Jian Liu developed detailed quantum mechanical simulations on the atomic scale that accurately predict the outcomes of various additive combinations in the water. They found that calcium, magnesium and sulfates settle farther from the calcite surface, rendering it more water-wet by modifying the effective charge on the surface, enhancing oil recovery. Their predictions have been backed by experiments carried out by their collaborators at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi: Saeed Alhassan, associate professor of chemical engineering and director of the Gas Research Center, and his research associate, Omar Wani. "Now, scientists in the lab will have a procedure by which they can make intelligent decisions on experiments instead of just trying different things," said Pantelides, University Distinguished Professor of Physics and Engineering, William A. & Nancy F. McMinn Professor of Physics, and professor of electrical engineering. "The discoveries also set the stage for future work that can optimize choices for candidate ions." The team's paper, "Wettability alteration and enhanced oil recovery induced by proximal adsorption of Na+ , Cl- , Ca2+, Mg2+, and SO2- 4 ions on calcite," appears today in the journal Physical Review Applied. It builds on Pantelides' previous work on wettability, released earlier this year. His co-investigators in Abu Dhabi said the work will have a significant impact on the oil industry. "We are excited to shed light on combining molecular simulations and experimentation in the field of enhanced oil recovery to allow for more concrete conclusions on the main phenomenon governing the process," Alhassan said. "This work showcases a classic approach in materials science and implements it in the oil and gas industry: the combination of modeling and experiment to provide understanding and solutions to underlying problems." [36] Quantum algorithm could help AI think faster One of the ways that computers think is by analysing relationships within large sets of data. An international team has shown that quantum computers can do one such analysis faster than classical computers for a wider array of data types than was previously expected. The team's proposed quantum linear system algorithm is published in Physical Review Letters. In the future, it could help crunch numbers on problems as varied as commodities pricing, social networks and chemical structures. "The previous quantum algorithm of this kind applied to a very specific type of problem. We need an upgrade if we want to achieve a quantum speed-up for other data," says Zhikuan Zhao, corresponding author on the work. The first quantum linear system algorithm was proposed in 2009 by a different group of researchers. That algorithm kick-started research into quantum forms of machine learning, or artificial intelligence. A linear system algorithm works on a large matrix of data. For example, a trader might be trying to predict the future price of goods. The matrix may capture historical data about price movements over time and data about features that could be influencing these prices, such as currency exchange rates. The algorithm calculates how strongly each feature is correlated with another by 'inverting' the matrix. This information can then be used to extrapolate into the future. "There is a lot of computation involved in analysing the matrix. When it gets beyond say 10,000 by 10,000 entries, it becomes hard for classical computers," explains Zhao. This is because the number of computational steps goes up rapidly with the number of elements in the matrix: every doubling of the matrix size increases the length of the calculation eight-fold. The 2009 algorithm could cope better with bigger matrices, but only if their data is sparse. In these cases, there are limited relationships among the elements, which is often not true of real-world data. Zhao, Prakash and Wossnig present a new algorithm that is faster than both the classical and the previous quantum versions, without restrictions on the kind of data it crunches. As a rough guide, for a 10,000 square matrix, the classical algorithm would take on the order of a trillion computational steps, the first quantum algorithm some tens of thousands of steps and the new quantum algorithm just hundreds of steps. The algorithm relies on a technique known as quantum singular value estimation. There have been a few proof-of-principle demonstrations of the earlier quantum linear system algorithm on small-scale quantum computers. Zhao and his colleagues hope to work with an experimental group to run a proof-of-principle demonstration of their algorithm, too. They also want to do a full analysis of the effort required to implement the algorithm, checking what overhead costs there may be. To show a real quantum advantage over the classical algorithms will need bigger quantum computers. Zhao estimates that "We're maybe looking at three to five years in the future when we can actually use the hardware built by the experimentalists to do meaningful quantum computation with application in artificial intelligence." [35] Cloud based quantum computing used to calculate nuclear binding energy A team of researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has demonstrated that it is possible to use cloud-based quantum computers to conduct quantum simulations and calculations. The team has written a paper describing their efforts and results and uploaded it to the arXiv preprint server. As work progresses toward the development of quantum computers able to tackle some of the most difficult problems in computer science, attention has shifted to the means by which such machines would be used. For example, if researchers build a big, expensive quantum computer able to model how atoms and particles behave under unusual conditions, how would research physicists access and use it? That has led to the idea of cloud quantum computing so that anyone could access and use it from practically anywhere. That idea has been put into practice by two companies investing seriously in a quantum computer-based future. IBM has developed what it calls Q Experience, and Rigetti has developed 19Q. The former has a quantum processor with 16 qubits while the later has 19. In addition to building their computers, both companies have also developed software that makes the systems available on the internet. To test the possibilities of such a platform, the team at Oak Ridge set themselves the task of using a quantum computer to calculate the nuclear binding energy of the deuterium nucleus (how much energy it would take to separate the neutron and proton). The team used both cloud quantum computing systems, which required tweaking software to deal with the differing number of qubits the machines were able to use. The team reports that the cloud responded with a binding energy that was within 2 percent of the actual measure. The researchers report that their efforts prove that cloud-based quantum computing works, and that it will be ready for prime-time when truly powerful machines are developed capable of such tasks as simulating quantum physical systems or revealing reaction mechanisms in complex chemical systems. [34] New quantum repeater paves the way for long-distance big quantum data transmission Physicists have designed a new method for transmitting big quantum data across long distances that requires far fewer resources than previous methods, bringing the implementation of longdistance big quantum data transmission closer to reality. The results may lead to the development of future quantum networks, such as a global-scale quantum internet. The researchers, Michael Zwerger and coauthors at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, have published a paper on the new long-range quantum communication method in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters. "The greatest significance of our work is that we provide an efficient and scalable scheme for longdistance quantum communication," Zwerger told Phys.org. "We believe that this will be an essential ingredient for a future quantum internet, where large amounts of quantum data will be transmitted. Most importantly, in contrast to previous proposals, the required resources (per transmitted qubit) at each repeater station do not scale with the distance, which makes the quantum data transmission more efficient." The new method relies on an alternative type of quantum repeater—a device that generates quantum entanglement at distant locations on a quantum network in order to combat signal loss, somewhat how an amplifier boosts the signal in classical communication networks. The biggest advantage of the new quantum repeater is that it can allow quantum data transmission to be scaled up to longer distances much more easily than with previous quantum repeaters. Typically, as the transmission distance increases, more resources (qubits) are needed at each repeater station. In previous schemes, the number of resources grows polylogarithmically or even polynomially at each repeater station with the distance. Using the new quantum repeater, the number of resources per transmitted qubit remains constant at each repeater station; that is, it is entirely independent of the distance. This allows for quantum data to be transmitted over arbitrarily long distances using a relatively small amount of resources. In its current implementation, the method uses a few hundred qubits at each repeater station, and can reach intercontinental distances. As the physicists explain, the key behind the new quantum repeater is an entanglement distillation protocol called hashing, which generates perfect pairs of entangled qubits. The researchers also used an optimized measurement-based implementation, which greatly reduces unwanted noise. These tools provide a high error tolerance and high transmission rates, allowing for quantum data transmission in realistically noisy scenarios, such as a quantum internet. "Just think of the internet as it has grown over the years, where data transmission has increased dramatically," Zwerger said. "One can envision a quantum internet, where rather than classical data quantum information is transmitted. Indeed, a number of very interesting applications of such quantum data transmission have been discussed, among them quantum cryptography, distributed quantum computing and distributed sensing. Truly secure transmission requires large keys, and hence also large quantum transmission rates. A similar thing can be said about the possibility of distributed quantum computation. In early proof-of-principle experiments, rates and overheads might not be a big deal, but this for sure will become highly relevant once one scales things up. This is where our proposal becomes relevant." In the future, the researchers plan to extend the new quantum repeater devices to work with larger networks. "The present proposal is for point-to-point communication between a sender and a receiver," Zwerger said. "We plan to use similar ideas for multipartite quantum networks with many users. In addition, we are currently investigating novel schemes where we try to apply similar techniques on smaller scales—taking some of the ideas of the hashing protocol and design entanglement purification protocols and communication schemes that use only a few qubits. This might have an impact on a shorter timescale, when first prototype quantum communication systems will be built." [33] Real-world intercontinental quantum communications enabled by the Micius satellite A joint China-Austria team has performed quantum key distribution between the quantum-science satellite Micius and multiple ground stations located in Xinglong (near Beijing), Nanshan (near Urumqi), and Graz (near Vienna). Such experiments demonstrate the secure satellite-to-ground exchange of cryptographic keys during the passage of the satellite Micius over a ground station. Using Micius as a trusted relay, a secret key was created between China and Europe at locations separated up to 7,600 km on the Earth. Private and secure communications are fundamental for Internet use and e-commerce, and it is important to establish a secure network with global protection of data. Traditional public key cryptography usually relies on the computational intractability of certain mathematical functions. In contrast, quantum key distribution (QKD) uses individual light quanta (single photons) in quantum superposition states to guarantee unconditional security between distant parties. Previously, the quantum communication distance has been limited to a few hundred kilometers due to optical channel losses of fibers or terrestrial free space. A promising solution to this problem exploits satellite and space-based links, which can conveniently connect two remote points on the Earth with greatly reduced channel loss, as most of the photons' propagation path is through empty space with negligible loss and decoherence. A cross-disciplinary multi-institutional team of scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by Professor Jian-Wei Pan, has spent more than 10 years developing a sophisticated satellite, Micius, dedicated to quantum science experiments, which was launched on August 2016 and orbits at an altitude of ~500 km. Five ground stations in China coordinate with the Micius satellite. These are located in Xinglong (near Beijing), Nanshan (near Urumqi), Delingha (37°22'44.43''N, 97°43'37.01"E), Lijiang (26°41'38.15''N, 100°1'45.55''E), and Ngari in Tibet (32°19'30.07''N, 80°1'34.18''E). Within a year after launch, three key milestones for a global-scale quantum internet were achieved: satellite-to-ground decoy-state QKD with kHz rate over a distance of ~1200 km (Liao et al. 2017, Nature 549, 43); satellite-based entanglement distribution to two locations on the Earth separated by ~1200 km and Bell test (Yin et al. 2017, Science 356, 1140), and ground-to-satellite quantum teleportation (Ren et al. 2017, Nature 549, 70). The effective link efficiencies in the satellite-based QKD were measured to be ~20 orders of magnitude larger than direct transmission through optical fibers at the same length of 1200 km. The three experiments are the first steps toward a global space-based quantum internet. The satellite-based QKD has now been combined with metropolitan quantum networks, in which fibers are used to efficiently and conveniently connect numerous users inside a city over a distance scale of ~100 km. For example, the Xinglong station has now been connected to the metropolitan multi-node quantum network in Beijing via optical fibers. Very recently, the largest fiber-based quantum communication backbone has been built in China, also by Professor Pan's team, linking Beijing to Shanghai (going through Jinan and Hefei, and 32 trustful relays) with a fiber length of 2000 km. Steel Steel is one of the most widely used materials, particularly in construction and engineering and in the manufacture of cars. It is estimated that there are over 20 billion tonnes of steel in use, equivalent to well over 2 tonnes for every person on Earth.Steels are alloys of iron, carbon and other metals and non-metals. The composition of the steel is adjusted so that it has the precise properties needed.The term alloy steel is confined to steels containing some combination of one or more of the following elements: nickel, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, manganese, cobalt, copper, niobium, zirconium, selenium and lead.Steels can be repeatedly recycled without any loss of performance. Uses of steel The construction industry is a main user of steel, from small buildings to huge bridges, and uses it in multiple ways, even within a single construction. A bridge, for example, might use steel in the huge suspension ropes, the steel plate flooring for the road, the beams for the columns, and for the safety barriers and lighting columns. Much steel is also used to reinforce concrete. Figure 1 Uses of steel in the UK. Chromium increases the corrosion resistance of steel, and a minimum of 12% chromium is necessary to produce a stainless steel. The best known of the stainless steels contains about 74% iron, 18% chromium and 8% nickel (known as 18-8 stainless). Stainless steel is perhaps most familiar as kitchenware (sinks, kettles and cutlery). Figures 2 and 3 Both these structures used about 45 000 tonnes of steel in their construction. By kind permission of World Steel Association. Steels used in such large constructions are often produced from iron which has been treated with molten magnesium to remove sulfur. Steels containing molybdenum, vanadium, chromium and tungsten in various combinations produce very hard, if brittle, steels. These are used, for example, in drill bits which need to retain a cutting edge. Steels are used widely in the manufacture of electrical motors, power generators (nuclear, conventional fuels and wind), gears and engines, which have to be very tough and withstand high temperatures. Steels with cobalt are used as magnets and those with nickel are used in the construction of nuclear reactors. There is a group of steels known as Advanced High Strength Steels, AHSS, which are specially treated steels that can be rolled very thin without losing the element of strength needed for the specific purpose. They are particularly useful in the manufacture of cars, helping to reduce the overall mass and thus decrease fuel consumption. Steels with a thin coating of tin are used to make cans for beverages and food. Steels coated in various ways with zinc are used in roofing, for example, and in cars as the zinc gives protection against rusting. The Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Process, which is used for the majority of steel production, uses iron freshly produced from the blast furnace together with some scrap steel. The Electric Arc Furnace Process uses scrap steel only. The Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Process Figure 6 IIllustrating the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) Process. The process uses modern furnaces lined with special bricks containing 90% magnesium oxide and 10% carbon. These can take up to 350 tonnes of reactants and convert them to steel in less than 40 minutes. The furnace (also known as a converter or vessel) is charged with steel scrap (up to about 30%) and molten iron from a ladle. An oxygen lance, cooled by circulating water, is lowered into the furnace and high purity oxygen is injected into the vessel at twice the speed of sound which ensures that all the impurities are converted into their oxides. The main chemical reactions are: With the exception of the carbon monoxide, the products react with lime, added during the oxygen blow, to form a slag. The above reactions are all exothermic and controlled quantities of scrap are added as a coolant to maintain the desired temperature. The steel at this stage contains ca 0.04% carbon. The Electric Arc Furnace Process Steel scrap is first tipped from an overhead crane into a furnace. The scrap comes from three sources: Home scrap: excess material from steel works and foundries. Industrial scrap: from processes using steel (such as excess steel from making a car). Obsolete scrap: discarded used products (for example, used cans). Figure 7 Illustrating the Electric Arc Process which uses scrap steel to produce pure steel very efficiently. The furnace is a circular bath with a movable roof through which three graphite electrodes are raised or lowered. These electrodes are massive, often 6 m high and 4 m wide, and the furnace can hold over 100 tonnes of liquid steel. After the steel scrap is placed in the furnace, the roof is put into position and the electrodes lowered into the furnace. An arc is struck by passing an electric current through the metal. The heat generated melts the scrap metal. Lime (as calcium oxide or calcium carbonate), fluorspar (which helps to keep the hot slag as a fluid) and iron ore are added and these combine with impurities to form a slag. When the steel has reached the correct composition the slag is poured off and the steel tapped from the furnace. Secondary steelmaking The term secondary production is often used when referring to recycling. However, in steelmaking the term secondary steelmaking refers to the production of steels which are needed for specific purposes and which require the addition of very carefully controlled quantities of other elements. Molten steel from either process is transferred to a ladle where the alloying elements are added. The process provides precise control of harmful impurities (particularly sulfur, phosphorus and, in some cases, trace metals and hydrogen) by adding materials via ladle injection. For example, aluminium and silicon are added to reduce any oxidized material. Other techniques used to help to improve the quality of the steel include stirring (ladle stirring) and applying a vacuum to the steel to remove gases (vacuum degassing). Casting Steel is produced in three forms, the form chosen being dependent on its ultimate use: as a slab, a long thick piece of metal with a rectangular cross-section as a bloom, a long piece of metal with a square cross-section as a billet, similar to a bloom but with a smaller cross-section. Most steel is continuously cast to the desired shape, but a small quantity (ca 10-20%) is first cast into ingots which are cooled and then worked on to produce the shape required. The casting is a very precise set of processes. The following descriptions are an outline. Continuous casting In continuous casting, the steel, still molten from the furnace, is poured into a water-cooled mould (teeming) from which it emerges as a strand which is solidifying at the surface. The strand passes through a series of rollers which are water sprayed to produce a solid (a slab, bloom or billet) which is then sent to be hot rolled. Ingot casting Molten steel is poured into a cast iron mould to solidify as an ingot. This generally weighs less than 20 tonnes but rotor forgings can weigh up to 500 tonnes. When the ingot has solidified, the mould is removed. Each ingot is of carefully pre-arranged dimensions and mass from which articles of the required size can be rolled. Rolling Steel products are classified into flat products and long products. Slabs of steel are rolled to produce flat products, for example steel sheet for the construction of ships. The sheet is rolled further to produce thinner sheet, used for example in the manufacture of cars. Blooms and billets are used to roll long bars of steel for construction and for drawing into wires. Often there are three stages to this part of the process, hot rolling, cold rolling and drawing. Hot rolling occurs when the slabs, blooms and billets are heated in a furnace until they are red hot (ca 1400 K) and then rolled until they have acquired the desired shape. The speed at which the hot steel is subsequently cooled is a crucial factor, affecting the strength and other properties of the steel. Cooling is done by spraying water as the steel passes through the rollers. During this rolling, oxygen in the air has reacted with the hot iron to form a very thin layer of iron(III) oxide on the surface. It is blue/grey in colour (only when it is thicker does it appear red). This must be stripped from the surface prior to the next stage, otherwise the final product will be susceptible to rusting and unsuitable for galvanizing with zinc and other surface treatments. The stripping process is known as pickling. The steel is passed through several baths of hydrochloric acid (sometimes sulfuric acid) which dissolves the oxide without attacking the metal. The spent acid is recycled. The 'pickled' steel is then subjected to cold rolling. As the name implies, the steel, following hot rolling, is rolled cold and gradually compressed to the required thickness. This improves the quality of the surface and also hardens the steel. On annealing (heating the strip very carefully), it can be pressed into shapes without cracking. Such sheet is used, for example, to press out car bodies. Steel cans are pressed out with sides and bottoms as a single entity, needing only the top to be fitted after filling. Very strong wires are produced by cold drawing. Recycling The recovery of scrap steel probably constitutes the world's largest scale recycling process. The scrap is either part of the charge for the Basic Oxygen Process or is the complete charge for the Electric Arc Furnace Process. About 40% of the iron-containing materials used in steel production are now from recycled sources. It is estimated that recycling one tonne of steel saves 1.1 tonnes of iron ore, 0.6 tonnes of coal and 0.5 tonnes of limestone, with an overall energy saving of 60-75%.
