Bride of Frankenstein Wants Gal Gadot to Replace Angelina Jolie Movieweb Contributor — October 6, 2017 in MOVIE NEWS 1.2k SHARES Yesterday, Universal Pictures yanked Bride of Frankenstein from its February 14, 2019 release date and off its release schedule entirely, which lead some to speculate that the studio's nascent Dark Universe is already in big trouble. Now we have word that Angelina Jolie, who has been rumored for some time as the title character but never officially confirmed, may be backing away from the project, but if she does, director Bill Condon reportedly wants to bring on Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) to take her place. While nothing is official quite yet, it could mark quite the interesting development for this project, and the Dark Universe as a whole. Shortly before the release of the first FR59n8qk1MWA87|+Dark Universe movie, The Mummy, Universal released a photo featuring The Mummy stars Tom Cruise (Nick Morton), Sofia Boutella (Ahmanet) and Russell Crowe (Dr. Henry Jekyl) but it also confirmed Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's monster in Bride of Frankenstein, and Johnny Depp as the title character in The Invisible Man. This new report from The Wrap claims that Javier Bardem's deal isn't finalized, and neither was Angelina Jolie's deal either. The report claims that the project has been in a "holding pattern," as director Bill Condon and the studio keep waiting to see whether or not Angelina Jolie will sign on or drop out of the project. Here's what an unidentified insider had to say about the project. "This is fairly out of nowhere given how deep they were into prep over there, but not really surprising. Their mandate has more or less been that they wanted these to work as PG-rated action movies/theme-park rides, not horror movies. Basically, Fast and the Furious meets The Avengers, but with super monsters." RELATED: Universal's Bride of Frankenstein Remake Isn't Dead Yet Another source stated they were surprised Universal is still moving forward with their Dark Universe, given how The Mummy flopped at the box office, which we reported in late June could result in losses of $95 million, despite a strong box office showing overseas. Still, it seems the studio is moving forward with this Dark Universe, which The Mummy helped set the table for. The entire universe will revolve around the mysterious corporation Prodigium, run by Dr. Henry Jekyl that has a mission to protect the world from supernatural creatures and beings. Director Bill Condon stated in an interview this week that he is not worried at all about how his movie connects to the Dark Universe, he's only concerned with making a great monster movie. Here's what the filmmaker had to say about the script that was written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), which is much different than the original 1935 classic, directed by James Whale. "What I love about David Koepp's script is he turns everything on its head. This is Eve before Adam, the bride comes first. So in its own way, you know, we all know the Bride only exists for 10 minutes in the Whale movie; she's there and the movie's over. So I keep thinking [it's], in a way, at least a tribute to what Whale might have done if he'd made a third Frankenstein movie and he'd done it in the 21st Century. I think there are just things about the sensibility of that movie. Also his genius in solving that basic problem you still see when people approach monster movies now, which is you've got to create a monster that you're afraid of, that you're terrified of, but you can still identify with, and that line was never walked better than by James Whale." As for Gal Gadot, her reps wouldn't comment on the story, and there is no indication of whether or not she would be interested in taking on this iconic role. The actress is most certainly in demand, after starring in Warner Bros.' first DCEU hit, Wonder Woman, which became the highest-grossing movie of the summer, and she will next be seen reprising that heroic role next month when Justice League hits theaters. Gal Gadot will almost certainly come back for the Justice League sequel, and Warner Bros. already set a December 13, 2019 release date for Wonder Woman 2. Since Bride of Frankenstein has already been pushed out of its 2019 date, it's possible that Gal Gadot could fit this into her schedule after making the Justice League sequel and Wonder Woman 2, that is, if she's even interested in the role. This report from The Wrap has not yet been confirmed, so hopefully we'll find out more soon. Topics: Bride of Frankenstein, Dark Universe

Robert Pattinson Explains His Approach To Bruce Wayne For ‘The Batman’ Robert Pattinson goes into how he explored the Bruce Wayne role. by RYDEN SCARNATO on NOVEMBER 5, 2020 Robert Pattinson recently opened up about how he prepared and dealt with bringing a new version of Bruce Wayne to life for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. After testing positive for COVID-19, Robert Pattinson and filming for The Batman had to be put on hold. Now, principal photography for The Batman is back in full swing with a slew of set photos coming out recently revealing better looks at Pattinson’s young Bruce Wayne and the other supporting characters in the highly-anticipated DC film. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair France, Pattinson talked about his experience on the set of The Batman so far and how he has dealt with being a part of the massive production: Read More “To start, The Batman, I’m using things at the moment that seem fragile compared to the importance of the project. Conversations I’ve had with close friends, embryos of dreams. This is the secret and sensitive part of the actor facing the heaviness of the project. On The Batman, on Tenet, a gigantic team of technicians surrounds you and when you say, “Let’s go Robert…Action!” you have to forget this mass of people and play in front of your own thoughts, your own demons. Yes, I have an actor’s excitement to face the tension of the set, the inordinate expectation of all these people and to transform it into a dialogue between me and myself. It’s an exciting and horrible feeling to be that “little shit” who risks planting all the heavy artillery, all that war infrastructure, because she wasn’t able to go and get it… I think about that, a few days before a shoot.” Warner Bros. Announces Home Release Details For Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ Many actors have had a crack at Batman over the years and Robert Pattinson has challenged himself as an actor ever since his departure from the Twilight franchise. Batman might be his biggest test yet and the actor later explained in detail what his approach to Bruce Wayne has been: “I look first at the character and what I have to do with it, how I’m going to have to invent nuances in this shell, making it more complex, more complex all the time. Batman is a role in which I have to learn how to play ambiguity better. It’s out of the question to interpret a character of a single color. It’s beautiful, people who seem to live in two states at the same time. And then, imagine: you love to cook and after years you succeed in obtaining the perfect dish, the healthiest, the most balanced, the tastiest, the most subtle; would you honestly eat it at every meal? No! What would you secretly dream about? To make you a nice fat cheeseburger, ah ah ah ah.” Are you a fan of Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne look in The Batman? Sound-off in the comments section below! ‘The Batman’ Set Photo Shows Off Robert Pattinson’s Batcycle Plot details for The Batman are being kept under lock and key, but we know that the project will revolve around Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector. The Batman will also feature the hero making use of his detective skills more than what we’ve seen before in previous iterations of the character. It is also expected to be the first installment to a new Batman trilogy with Pattinson. Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella ReĂĄl, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2022. What Exactly Is A Tesseract?Updated On: 16 Oct 2019 By Ashish Tesseract: A 4D cube Simply put, a tesseract is a cube in 4-dimensional space. You could also say that it’s the 4D analogue of a cube. It is a 4D shape where every face is a cube. If you’re an Avengers fan, the first thing that may come to your mind when you hear the word “tesseract” is this: avengers tesseract The Tesseract, as shown in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Photo Credit : Avengers movie / Marvel Studios) For fans of the Marvel Universe, the Tesseract is the glowing blue cube that people from, not only Earth, but other planets are also crazy for. That’s the reason why all the Avengers teamed up in order to protect Earthlings from the exceedingly devastating powers of the Tesseract. However, let me tell you this: the tesseract is an actual geometrical concept, or rather, a shape that exists in 4D. It’s not just a blue cube from the Avengers… it’s a real concept. The moment you realise that the tessaract is a real concept in geometry meme A tesseract is an object in 4 dimensions. But before we explain a tesseract in detail, let’s start from the absolute bottom. What are ‘dimensions’? I’m sure that you’ve heard the terms 2D and 3D a number of times, representing 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional objects of space, respectively. But what do those ‘dimensions’ represent? A dimension is just a direction in which you can go. For example, if you’re drawing a line on a piece of paper, then you can go in either the left/right (x-axis) direction, or in the up/down direction (y-axis). Thus, we say that the paper is effectively 2-dimensional, as you can only go in two directions on it. Now, in the real world, in addition to the two directions mentioned above (i.e., left/right and up/down), you can also go in/out. Hence, a sense of depth is added in 3D space. Therefore, we say that real life is 3-dimensional. Wall E 2d vs 3d image Notice how there is a sense of depth in 3D, but not in 2D. (Photo Credit : Pixabay) A dot can represent 0 dimensions (as it does not move in any direction), a line represents 1 dimension (length), a square represents 2 dimensions (length and breadth) and a cube represents 3 dimensions (length, breadth and height). Take a 3D cube and replace each face (which is currently a square) with a cube. Lo and behold! The shape you get is a tesseract. What is a tesseract? Simply put, a tesseract is a cube in 4-dimensional space. You could also say that it’s the 4D analogue of a cube. It is a 4D shape where every face is a cube. Original version of the animated 8-cell A 3D projection of a tesseract performing a double rotation about two orthogonal planes. (Photo Credit : Jason Hise / Wikimedia Commons) Here’s a simple way to conceptualize dimensions: a square is a 2D shape; so, each of its corners has 2 lines coming off it at 90 degrees to each other. A cube is 3D, so each of its corners has 3 lines coming off it. Similarly, a tesseract is a 4D shape, so every corner has 4 lines coming off it. Square cube tesseract 2d 3d 4d Notice the shapes in 2D, 3D and 4D. Why is it difficult to visualize a tesseract? Now, since we, as humans, have only evolved to visualize stuff in 3 dimensions, anything that’s a part of further dimensions, like 4D, 5D, 6D etc, do not make much sense to us because we can’t visualize them at all. Our brains can’t make any sense of a 4th dimension in space. We simply can’t wrap our heads around it. However, just because we cannot visualize a concept doesn’t meant it cannot exist. So you think a 4d cube cant exist just because you cannot visualise it in your head thats cute meme Mathematically, a tesseract is a perfectly accurate shape. Similarly, all shapes in higher dimensions, i.e. 5D and 6D, are also mathematically plausible. Just like a cube can be unfolded into 6 squares in 2D space, a tesseract can be unfolded into 8 cubes in 3D space. 3-D net of a Tesseract 3-D net of a Tesseract. (Photo Credit : A2569875 / Wikimedia Commons) Mind-boggling, isn’t it? So, a tesseract is a ‘real concept’ that is absolutely plausible mathematically, not just a glowing blue cube they fight over in Avengers movies. Bronze. Courtesy of the Turnbull Studio William Turnbull’s sculptures of horses feel both familiar and alien. Here, the mask-like form of the head narrows like a horse’s muzzle, but the eyes appear at the center of the face, rather than the sides. From a side view, the sculpture also resembles an adze—a tool similar to an axe whose blade is perpendicular rather than parallel to the handle. Look for similarities between the horse’s head and the blade of an adze, and the arcing neck to its handle. In Turnbull’s words, when depicting horses, “what interests me…is how the part can represent the whole. I mean that when you see the horse’s head you feel the whole horsee…And when I make horses’ heads…it’s always been with the idea of having a metaphoric quality.” For Turnbull, the adze was an everyday object that had similar qualities to a horse’s head. When you visit the museum, take a walk around it and notice how the form continually shifts. Is there an angle from which it reminds you of a budding amaryllis flower stalk? This sculpture first appeared at the museum as a full-size plywood model in Tony Smith: Two Exhibitions of Sculpture, the artist’s first solo exhibition. The Optic Cloak was designed to conceal the centre’s towering flue system that provides low-carbon energy to 15,000 homes. Both sculptures feature a rolling skin of perforated aluminum triangles that capture and refract light, creating a moirĂ©, or rippled effect. Bronze on granite base. Gift of James J. Goodwin, 1892.1 Installed in 1893, Enoch Woods’s Nathan Hale was the first work of art to be placed on the Wadsworth’s grounds. Hale is recognized as Connecticut’s state hero and a national patriotic symbol for his role as a spy, reporting on the movements of British troops, during the Revolutionary War. He was captured and executed on September 22, 1776. A witness to his execution purportedly heard him proclaim, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” Created for a state-run sculpture competition, this memorial of the twenty-one-year-old Hale was made by Hartford local, Enoch Woods. Who is one of your heroes? How would you portray your hero in sculpture to celebrate them? Share your vision at #sculptureinthecity. Restoration Scheduled for Summer 2020 Atmospheric pollution has taken its toll on this sculpture’s original surface and its granite base after spending nearly 130 years outdoors. The green and black streaks are evidence of corrosion on the metal and discoloration on the stone. The sculpture has also shifted slightly toward one side of the base. In the coming months, Nathan Hale will undergo a major conservation treatment and restoration. A clear coating will be applied to the sculpture to protect the surface, and the statue will be realigned. Francis Miller, directing conservator of Conserve ART will lead the conservation treatment, in collaboration with the Wadsworth’s objects conservator. Major support for this restoration project was provided by a grant from the Avangrid Foundation. The grant will also realize a plan to illuminate the restored sculpture. Between 1775 and 1789, General George Washington visited Hartford multiple times, including meetings with Colonel Jeremiah Wadsworth on this very spot, where the Wadsworth family home once stood. Washington noticed how well-supplied the Connecticut soldiers were and assigned Wadsworth, a wealthy businessman and political leader, the position of Deputy Commissary of Provisions for the Continental Army. The memorial’s lengthy inscription details the key visits during which military strategies and plans to defeat the British troops were discussed. Painted steel. Purchased through the gift of James Junius Goodwin, 1974.32 Since his first trip to Africa in 1970, Edwards has created abstract sculptures that combine his interests in African and American literature and culture. Across the Limpopo refers to the journey of South African poet and anti-apartheid activist Keorapetse “Willie” Kgositsile (1938‒2018) who was exiled from his native country in 1961. He traversed the Limpopo River along the northeast border of South Africa into Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and further to New York. Edwards’s bright orange, curvilinear sculpture conveys this story through its form. The ladder element precariously crossing the top of the sculpture serves as an imaginary bridge to guide the artist’s friend to a safer shore. Architect Benjamin Wistar Morris was chosen to design both the Colt and the adjacent Morgan Memorial building. Opened to the public in 1910, the Colt Memorial visually connects the Wadsworth and Morgan buildings with its dark gray granite facade and marble moldings. Look across the Wadsworth, Colt, and Morgan buildings (use the image at the top of this page to see all three at once). If you were asked to design an addition to them, what would it look like? Post your design to #sculptureinthecity. Hartford-born financier J. Pierpont Morgan (1837‒1913) provided the funds to erect the Beaux Arts-style structure as a tribute to his father Junius Spencer Morgan (1813–1890). Architect Benjamin Wistar Morris designed it and the adjoining Colt Memorial at the same time. The rough granite facade of the Colt Memorial contrasts with the smooth marble of the Morgan Memorial while the marble moldings and carvings unite the two buildings. Funded by the art dealer, collector, and philanthropist Samuel Putnam Avery III (1847–1920), the Art Deco exterior featured clean lines and minimal ornamentation. Inside, the austere, white-walled galleries marked the nation’s first museum interior designed in the International Style. Who was Black Hawk? Picture Black Hawk In many cases Black Hawk (a.k.a. Black Sparrow Hawk) is called "Chief" Black Hawk. This is false information and a false title for the man who was known by his people as 'Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak.' Most historians agree that his title should be more like 'War Captain' or 'War Leader.' If someone calls him "Chief" Black Hawk, it is safe to assume that they know little about him. Black Hawk was most likely born around 1767, but it is hard to prove since the Sauk (Sac) were not handing out birth certificates back then. Most of his life story is known from his autobiography that was published after the war. Sorry to give away some of the story, but yes, Black Hawk does survive the war. Since he did not have the ability to write his story out in English, he spoke in his Native language to a translator named Antoine LeClair who then transcribed what he said into English prose. It was later edited and published by J.B. Patterson in 1833. If you have never read Black Hawk's autobiography, I recommend you do so if you are interested in this topic. Black Hawk fought on the side of the British during the War of 1812 and usually preferred the company of the British and Spanish over the Americans. This is why his group was called the "British Band." He did not tour with with the Beatles in the 60's, but he had sided with the British in the past and was assured the British would aid him if he crossed the Mississippi and went to war with the US, which is what he did in 1832. Unfortunately for Black Hawk, it was all talk. Once Black Hawk crossed the Rubicon (metaphorically) a majority of the people who said they would support him turned their back on him when he needed their help the most. ...Not finished yet! Timeline of the War 1767-About the year Black Hawk was born. 1782-Birth of Brevet Brigadier General Henry Atkinson, the commander of the US forces that were tracking Black Hawk and his "British Band." 1804-Treaty of 1804, also known as the Treaty of St. Louis. This treaty is what the US used to take all of the Sauk and Fox lands on the east bank of the Mississippi (modern NW Illinois and SW Wisconsin). The Sauk and Fox claimed the treaty invalid since the people that signed the treaty had no right to do so or speak for the people as a whole. 1809-The birth of Abraham Lincoln, who later became a young militia Captain in the Black Hawk War. 1812-15-The War of 1812 was being fought in North America and the Sauk and Fox sided with the British because they were promised their land returned from the US government. Black Hawk actively fought against American forces. 1828-The Sauk and Fox were given one year to leave the east bank of the Mississippi. 1829-About 20 white families illegally occupy homes in Saukenuk, the capital of the Sauk and Fox at the mouth of the Rock River on the Mississippi. It is where the modern city of Rock Island, IL is located. Later that year, the Sauk and Fox moved to the Iowa side of the river. 1830-Black Hawk travels to Canada to get a verbal confirmation of British support if he decides to go to war with the US government. Black Hawk also sent emissaries to different indigenous nations to seek support. 1832-April 5 and 6-Black Hawk's band crosses the Mississippi River into Illinois to march towards Saukenuk. April 8-US troops leave St. Louis and move up the Mississippi towards Black Hawk. They pass Black Hawk and his band without knowing it on the 11th. April 13-Black Hawk and his people arrive at Saukenuk. April 24-US messengers were sent to Black Hawk to ask him to return cross the river in peace. He rejects the offer. April 25-Black Hawk and his people move east along the Rock River. May 13-The Battle of Stillman's Run. Black Hawk sent a few warriors to negotiate a surrender, but a lack of communication started the first major conflict of the war that ended with a victory for Black Hawk. May 21-A massacre of white families outside of modern Ottawa, Illinois. Usually referred to as the 'Indian Creek Massacre.' June 16-The Battle of Pecatonica. Militia soldiers chase and kill a group of 11 warriors. Black Hawk and the main body of his people were many miles north at this time. July 18-The US forces find Black Hawk's trail south of Hustisford, Wisconsin and starts to follow them west towards the Mississippi River. July 21-The Battle of Wisconsin Heights. A small band of Black Hawk's warriors hold up US forces near the bank of the Wisconsin River to let many of the non-combatants cross the river to safety. August 1-Black Hawk's band reach the mouth of the Bad Axe River along the Mississippi. The Sauk tried to cross the river, but a steamboat called the 'Warrior' fired cannon into Black Hawk's people and they were forced to stay on the Wisconsin side of the river. August 2-The Massacre at Bad Axe. Black Hawk decided to leave the night of the 1st and head toward northern Wisconsin with a small group of supporters. Meanwhile, most of the stragglers decided to cross the Mississippi but were surprised that morning by the presence of US forces. Black Hawk's people were forced towards the river and many men, women, and children were killed trying to cross the river. Many Dakota warriors that sided with the US were waiting for the Sauk on the other side of the Mississippi and tracked down and killed many of the survivors of Bad Axe. Black Hawk later surrendered at Prairie du Chien and he was imprisoned at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. 1838-Black Hawk dies in Iowa.

Tom Cruise Transforms Into The DCEU’s Green Lantern In New Fan Art by AAHIL DAYANI on MAY 24, 2020 Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise transforms into the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern in a new concept design for the DCEU. The DCEU is filled to the brim with some of DC’s greatest and most iconic heroes, including Batman and Superman. One hero that hasn’t graced the silver screen for the DCEU is Green Lantern, a character fans have been clamouring to see. While there is a HBO Max series currently in development, what folks are really looking forward to see is the character back on the big screen, where he can join the Justice League. A Green Lantern Corps project has been announced but there’s no telling when that’ll hit cinemas. There has been tons of speculation as to who will play the hero, should he be cast for the DCEU. One name that constantly gets thrown out is Tom Cruise, the star of the Mission: Impossible series. Read More ‘Arrow’: David Ramsey Teases Return To John Diggle As A Green Lantern Tom Cruise has pretty much starred in every genre possible but has failed to do a superhero movie in his 30-plus year tenure as an A-list actor. Should he choose to put on tights and masks for the big screen, Green Lantern would be a perfect choice for actor. Instead of closing our eyes and imagining what he would look like, a concept design from artist Pabloruizzx perfectly transforms Cruise into Hal Jordan. The artwork looks breathtaking, with Tom Cruise flying above Earth in a battered suit. The concept design makes it look as if Cruise’s Hal Jordan just came back from fighting a villain like Sinestro. Should the DCEU ever want to expand to the cosmos, Cruise would be a great choice to play Green Lantern. The actor has proven time and time again that he’s more than capable of leading successful movies. While the cinematic name of Green Lantern may have been tarnished due to Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the character, Cruise is the perfect actor to get butts into seats. Ryan Reynolds Takes Dig At Green Lantern In Virtual Commencement Speech Do you think the DCEU should cast Tom Cruise as Green Lantern? Comment below and let us know! A Green Lantern Corps movie is currently in development with Geoff Johns on board as a writer and producer. Full details on Green Lantern Corps are being kept under lock and key, though the project will draw inspiration from Geoff Johns’ work on the New 52 Green Lantern comics with both Hal Jordan and John Stewart set to appear in the film. In addition to the series, HBO Max is developing a Strange Adventures DC anthology series and a DC Super Hero High show from Elizabeth Banks. News of the Green Lantern series arrived shortly after reports of HBO Max planning to produce DC projects with budgets on par with those of feature films. CELEBRITIES Truth About Angelina Jolie, Keanu Reeves Having A Romance AAndrew Shuster 4:49 pm, July 11, 2019 Facebook Email Copy to clipboard Angelina Jolie Keanu Reeves Romance Rumors (Getty Images) Angelina Jolie and Keanu Reeves aren't dating, despite various tabloids attempting to create a fake romance between the two. Gossip Cop has debunked many variations of the phony narrative. Here are a few wrong rumors. Gossip Cop first busted the premise back in October 2018 when NW falsely claimed Jolie and Reeves had been "quietly dating" for more than a year. According to the outlet, the two stars met after the actress and her six kids moved next door to his mom's house in Los Angeles. Jolie and Reeves were even said to have taken a "top-secret trip to a secluded Greek island together." RELATED Inside Steve Harvey’s Astounding Net Worth A supposed source told the publication that Reeves was bonding with the actress's children, while his mom was hoping he'd "settle down" with Jolie. Not only did an individual in the actress's camp assure us the story was fabricated, but around the same time, reliable outlets such as People magazine and E! News reported that she wasn't interested in dating and was focused on her kids. That remains the case. Last month, Star published a bogus cover story alleging Jolie had asked Reeves out on a date. The tabloid contended that the actress was looking for love again and had set her sights on the John Wick star. "She hasn't been this excited about a man since she first met Brad [Pitt]," a supposed source was quoted as saying. The anonymous tipster went on to say that Reeves gave Jolie "butterflies" because he was "just her type - edgy and a bit of a rogue." The supposed insider further maintained that the actress had set up "an intimate dinner at her house" for just the two of them. Reeves' own spokesperson, however, told Gossip Cop that the article was "completely false" and the interaction "never occurred." Meanwhile, Jolie's rep confirmed that the actress was single and remained concerned with her career and her family. And shortly after that, Gossip Cop called out Woman's Day for falsely claiming Jolie wanted Reeves to join her upcoming Marvel movie, The Eternals, so she could date him once they start working together. The story came on the heels of unverified rumors about the actor being in talks for the comic book film. Reeves' involvement in the project is still unclear, but the magazine claimed Jolie was actively campaigning for him to come on board as an excuse to pursue him on set. An individual in the actress's camp laughed off the report. In addition to Jolie taking a break from dating, she's certainly not trying to find a boyfriend by casting him in one of her films. It remains to be seen whether or not Reeves will co-star in The Eternals, but Gossip Cop can confirm that Jolie isn't hoping to make a love connection on set. These various storylines involving the two stars are all fabricated. OUR VERDICT Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.

Humanities › History & Culture MK Ultra: Inside the CIA's Mind Control Program Share Flipboard Email PRINT USA - Government - CIA Seal at the National Security Agency Corbis via Getty Images / Getty Images By Brionne Frazier Updated September 02, 2019 Project MK-Ultra was a series of CIA-led experiments on mind control. The experiments began in 1953 and continued into the late 1960s. CIA researchers subjected thousands of U.S. and Canadian citizens to experimental tests, including electric shock therapy, brain surgery, and LSD dosing, in order to identify methods for controlling human behavior. Key Takeaways: Project MK-Ultra Project MK-Ultra was a series of CIA-led experiments on mind control. The most famous MK-Ultra experiments involved LSD, but the program also tested the effectiveness of hypnosis, electroshock therapy, and brain surgeries. The experiments were conducted without the full consent of the subjects. Many subjects were in vulnerable positions like incarceration or psychiatric treatment. The federal government was brought to trial several times as a result of the project. Concerns about Project MK-Ultra led to an executive order stating that experiences with human subjects must require affirmative consent. The CIA hoped that successful methods could be used as interrogation tactics for alleged criminals or prisoners of war. These experiments were conducted without full consent of the participants, and the federal government was sued and brought to trial multiple times over the resulting deaths and injuries. Origins of Project MK-Ultra In 1953, Allen Dulles, then-director of the CIA, initiated the MK-Ultra program. The reasoning was three-fold. First, U.S. intelligence had learned that Russia was testing a drug, bulbocapnine, which was said to affect willpower in order to extract information from a subject. Second, during the Korean War, North Korea had used LSD as an interrogation method of U.S. prisoners of war, and the U.S. sought to identify methods to counter such a tactic. Third, the U.S. no longer had a monopoly on nuclear weapons, and therefore wanted new methods to influence leaders and extract information. Sidney Gottlieb, an American chemist who was known to take LSD himself, presided over the program as the chief of the CIA’s technical services. The experiments primarily took place at penitentiaries, hospitals, and universities, targeting “people who could not fight back.” Patients and inmates were given doses of LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs or subjected to electric shocks without consent, then examined for changes in behavior. Additionally, the CIA hired sex workers to dose unsuspecting clients in brothels (known as Operation Midnight Climax) and even dosed their own agents during the period of experimentation. The Experiments The most famous MK-Ultra experiments involved LSD, but the program also tested the effectiveness of hypnosis, electroshock therapy, and brain surgeries. Because the CIA later destroyed documents relating to MK-Ultra, most of what we know about the experiments comes from testimonies provided by experiment subjects. Farrell Kirk, a plaintiff in one of the lawsuits against the CIA, stated that the experiments with LSD caused him to experience extreme depression and drove him to attempt suicide. After his suicide attempts, he was questioned and studied again, then placed into solitary confinement. James Knight, who had been incarcerated for liquor smuggling, explained that the experiments gave him violent tendencies and severe memory loss. Before the experiments, all of his arrests were for non-violent offenses, but afterwards, he was arrested multiple times for assault. One particularly famous subject in the MK-Ultra experiments was Whitey Bulger, a Boston crime boss. Bulger alleges that, while incarcerated in an Atlanta penitentiary, he was a subject in experiments related to schizophrenia. Along with eight or nine other inmates, he was dosed with LSD and asked about crimes he may or may not have committed. Bulger described a rise in his own violent tendencies after the LSD experiments, as well as hallucinations and difficulty sleeping. Ted Kaczynski—better known as "The Unabomber", who killed three and injured 23 with homemade bombs—was a subject of MK-Ultra tests while a student at Harvard University in 1958. Dr. Henry Murray tested his theories of behavioral modification and mind control on dozens of students like Kaczynski by subjecting them to extreme verbal abuse and then monitoring their reactions. Associated Deaths At least two deaths are directly associated with the MK-Ultra experiments: those of Frank Olson and Harold Blauer. Olson, bacteriologist for the CIA's Camp Detrick in Maryland, was unwittingly laced with LSD while at a CIA retreat. Due to his increased paranoia, he was sent to New York to be treated by a CIA psychologist. On November 28, 1953, he died after either falling or jumping out of a 13th-floor window. Olson’s family was initially told of the suicide but not of the experiments. There is speculation that members of the CIA pushed Olson, but the initial cause of death was ruled a suicide, then changed to an accidental death. The Olson family brought a lawsuit against the U.S. government for the experimentation leading to Frank’s death, but they settled out of court. Harold Blauer was a patient at New York State Psychiatric Institute who voluntarily admitted himself to be treated for depression. While in treatment, he was unknowingly dosed with mescaline derivatives, one of which turned out to be a fatal dose. The institute identified his cause of death as self-inflicted overdose. Blauer's family sued the hospital for neglecting to monitor his medications. After the MK-Ultra program came to light, the family was informed that Blauer’s death was a result of the experimentation. Trials and Aftermath Because the test subjects were either partly or entirely unaware of the experiments, and because the tests resulted in a number of deaths and injuries, the federal government was sued and brought to trial several times over MK-Ultra. After the Watergate scandal led to greater overall scrutiny of government processes, the CIA destroyed many documents related to MK-Ultra. By the time of the trials a few years later, there was not much paper evidence of the illegal experimentation. In 1974, The New York Times published an article about the CIA directing nonconsensual mind control experiments. The report led to the creation of the Church Committee to investigate the nation’s intelligence gathering program and hold Senate hearings. Victims of the experiments filed lawsuits against the federal government for human rights violations and neglect. These efforts led President Ronald Reagan to sign Executive Order 12333, which stated that research with human subjects must require affirmative consent with documentation describing exactly what the subjects are consenting to. The CIA publicly announced that MK-Ultra experiments had been terminated. The MK-Ultra project led to immense distrust of the federal government and is central to many conspiracy theories about politicians and intelligence agencies in the U.S. Sources M. Lilandra last edited by deactivated-5f035224e8503 on 02/21/19 02:34PM View full history Origin Princess Majestrix Lilandra Neramani was born on Aerie (now called Chandilar), the home world of the Shi'ar Empire, one of four royal offspring. Creation Lilandra first appeared in X-Men vol. 1 #97 and was created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum. Character Evolution Once the Shi'ar Empress Once the Shi'ar Empress Her older sister Deathbird was banished after murdering their mother and sister, leaving the throne to their brother D’ken. Lilandra served as the Grand Admiral of the Imperial Guard under Majestor D’Ken, until she learned of her brother’s insane plans for the M’Kraan Crystal. When she opposed him in the Shi'ar High Council, D’ken had her arrested. Before he could execute her, Lilandra escaped and fled to Earth. She was aware of Professor Xavier’s powers and had established a psychic link between them, which allowed her to send him warning visions of her coming. The Shi'ar observer of Earth, Davan Shakari, was waiting, and captured Lilandra when she finally met Xavier. Davan Shakari took her to the M’Kraan Crystal through a stargate, with Xavier and the X-men following. Using the powers of the Phoenix, Jean Grey and the X-Men stopped D’ken from destroying the universe with the M’Kraan Crystal. D’ken survived, but was catatonic. While the Shi'ar High Council debated the successor to the mad majestor, Lilandra went back to Earth with Xavier and the X-men. There her relationship with Xavier grew. Lilandra was made majestrix, and returned to the Shi'ar Empire with Xavier – who believed his X-Men had died in battle. When he learned differently, and when he realized Jean Grey needed his help, Xavier returned to Earth. But he was unsuccessful. The Dark Phoenix annihilated an inhabited Shi'ar planet, and Majestrix Lilandra ordered her extermination. Xavier convinced Lilandra to allow Jean Grey a trial by combat instead, which ended when Jean sacrificed herself. Meanwhile, the exiled Deathbird formed an alliance with the Badoon, the Brood, and the Shi'ar Lord Samedar to overthrow Lilandra. With the help of the X-men, the Brood were defeated, but Deathbird claimed the Shi'ar throne. Lilandra fled, and sought asylum and help from the Starjammers. Even as a majestrix in exile, Lilandra was able to organize the intergalactic trial of Reed Richards for the crime of saving Galactus. Lilandra was still trying to regain her empire, when she sensed Xavier’s failing health through their psychic bond, and had the Starjammers rush to Earth. They took Xavier with them to heal his injuries with Shi'ar technology. Recovered, Xavier ended up joining Lilandra and the Starjammers, as Deathbird’s pursuit of her sister prevented him from returning to Earth. Lilandra holding the ceremonial staff Lilandra holding the ceremonial staff In her reign as the empress, the empire has been in troubled times. The Skrulls tried to infiltrate and control the Shi'ar Council, declared war on the Kree, and have battle against the Phalanx and the Uncreated. Perhaps the most devastating experience Lilandra had to go through was when Cassandra Nova control Charles Xavier, who mind controlled Lilandra into commanding the Shi'ar fleet to attack Shi'ar territory and destroying all of the mutants on Earth. In a fit of rage, Lilandra tried to kill Xavier, not knowing that he was also controlled, but the Shi'Ar took her away and prompted Jean Grey to transform into the Phoenix force. With these events, the Shi'Ar council decided to annul the marriage between Lilandra and Charles. Major Story Arcs The Rise of Emperor Vulcan As she was about to return to her duties as the empress, she was jumped by Chancellor Araki, who revealed to be part of the empire secret order to plot a coup d'etat to place D'Ken backed into the throne. Lilandra then escaped, with the help of the Shi'ar guard still loyal to her and surprisingly found out that Charles had been captured and that the X-Men together with the Starjammers where going to help her regain her rightful place on the throne and save Charles. Lilandra becomes more assertive going as far as breaking out her uncle, an exiled Shi'ar General Ka'Ardum, who betrayed her during a failed military coup, to take on D'Ken. In the ensuing battle between Shi'ar soldiers loyal to D'Ken, those loyal to Lilandra, the X-Men and the Starjammers, Vulcan killed D'Ken after the wedding ceremony to Deathbird, declares himself emperor of the Shi'ar with Deathbird as his empress, and kills his father, Corsair. Lilandra then assures Charles safety with some of his X-Men by sending them back to earth while she stayed behind to fight to regain her title as empress of the Shi'Ar empire. With the Shi'Ar displeasure with the false Emperor Vulcan Lilandra aided by General Ka'Ardum and the soldiers still loyal to her aided by the Starjammers now led by Corsair's elder son Havok continue to raid and amass their military force to fight Vulcan when a third more powerful alien faction joins the battle at Feather's Edge. Scyar'tal are determined to exterminate the Shi'Ar so the two enemies ally themselves to fight their common threat. While Vulcan intends to eradicate the threat, Lilandra shows a more merciful approach wanting to end the fighting and come to an understanding. It is Vulcan who gets what he wants committing Xenocide by using the weapon of Scyar'tal against their own forces. He is aided in this by General Ka'Ardum who advises his niece to flee while she can because he has decided to side with Vulcan as the Emperor of the Shi'ar Empire as he has proven to be a true Shi'ar taking the step necessary that Lilandra was unwilling to. When the Starjammers were captured by Vulcan, Lilandra, Korvus and Marvel Girl where the only ones to escape. Kingbreaker Lilandra joins the Starjammers and uses the spies still loyal to her over the next months to find out the location of the Starjammers ship as well as find out where Vulcan has imprisoned the other members of the Starjammers joined by Korvus and Marvel Girl. Together the three cause Vulcan enough grief especially after they regain the Starjammer ship that causes Vulcan to commit a new group of Imperial Guards amongst them Xenith, a fellow Strontian and Hodinn a deranged man with the power of a star with the specific task of killing Lilandra and the others. No Caption Provided After she and Marvel Girl visit Gladiator at his home, where she distracts him using his weakness for her to her advantage while Rachel searches his mind for the location of Havok and the others, they quickly escape en-route for the The Hole which is an underwater facility on planet Kr'nn. However they encounter the radical new team of Imperial Guards determined to succeed in their assigned mission by Vulcan however the Hodinn with the Imperial Guard prove deranged as he almost kill everyone as he destroys the planet. Determined they go in to extract the rest of the Starjammers from the Prison but arrive to find them already freed and Havok unwilling to leave till he faces Vulcan who has been visiting them in prison. However before they can discuss this the new Imperial Guards arrive they find themselves battling them. Till the old Imperial Guards show up together with Vulcan and Deathbird. She pleads with Kallark not to kill Havok but Gladiator doesn't listen but luckily is distracted by Xenith. When Deathbird attacks her determined to kill her. Lilandra finds herself forced to defend herself and critically injures her older sister. Before she abruptly despite Havok's objection initiates the teleport evac back to the Starjammer and proceeds to fly the ship away from Kr'nn with the Kree homeworld in mind. War Of Kings On Hala she seeks an audience with the new Kree King the inhuman Black Bolt wishing to seek asylum and warns them of Vulcan's intention of conquering known space. Medusa, who speaks for Blackbolt however states that Vulcan wouldn't attempt such. The Queen however is proven to be wrong when the Imperial Guards attack in the middle of a wedding ceremony and snatch Lilandra from right under their noses. Vulcan who is in high spirits due to his victories against the Kree taunts Lilandra who is brought before him by Gladiator however later his moods sours as the Inhumans joined by the Starjammers retaliate with a vengeance. Furious Vulcan intends to kill Lilandra but is stopped by the General turned Admiral of the Shi'ar fleet Ka'Ardum. Vulcan opts to send Lilandra back to Chandilar to face trail certain that she will be found guilty and then he could proceed to kill her and has her escorted back by Gladiator. The Starjammers joined by a faction of the Guardians of the Galaxy intercept the vessel carrying the exiled Empress back and try to free her. However Kallark quickly best them and soon recaptures Lilandra who again pleads with him and is shocked when suddenly Kallark turns on his own Imperial Guards and kills Smasher and declares he serves at the pleasure of Empress Lilandra. Lilandra dies? Lilandra dies? With Kallark now at her side she accompanied by the Starjammers make it back to the Throne World where she meets with her secret supporters and during forum in which many of the Shi'Ar elected officials show their discontent with Vulcan's current rule. She makes her bid to reclaim her throne. Thou while most of the council stand behind her their is still strong dissension among the people of Shi'Ar which shows as Pro-Vulcan supporters clash violently with the Lilandra supporters as she makes her way to the temple to be blessed by the gods and rightfully regain her throne. Lilandra shows doubt in her reclaiming the throne faced with such a divided crowd when the Death Commandos attack they believe chancellor Araki to behind this but as it turns out the Death Commando was merely a diversion tactic for the Fraternity of Raptors assassin Razor also known as Darkhawk who proves successful and fires a killing shot at Lilandra who dies in Kallark's arms. Powers and Abilities Lilandra has peak human strength, speed, agility, endurance and reflexes and limited telepathic powers. She usually wears body armor. Alternate Version Earth-1610 In the Ultimate Universe Lilandra is a normal human (not alien or mutant). She recently entered the lives of the X-Men and Charles Xavier in particular as the Majestrix of the Church of the Shi'ar Enlightenment. She introduces their beliefs to Xavier as centering around worshiping a cosmic entity known as the Phoenix, and believes that Jean Grey may be the human host to the power of the Phoenix. Lilandra offered Charles funding for the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning in return for allowing her to perform some tests on Jean to determine if she truly is the Phoenix host. To prove her goodwill, Lilandra had a new blackbird built for the X-men. However, Jean didn't like the experiments, and attacked Lilandra with her powers. Xavier was able to stop her, and Lilandra decided to postpone her experiments. Before she can do much else though, Lilandra's assistant convinces her that Jean's powers are natural. Along with a professional relationship, Lilandra has developed a romantic relationship with Xavier. Ultimate Lilandra Ultimate Lilandra Despite Xavier's "death" by the future mutant Cable, Lilandra has pledged to continue support for the school now run by former students Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey. Earth-982 In the MC2 universe, the Shi'Ar throneworld is devoured by Galactus. With the help of the Imperial guard, Lilandra escape the planet before it was consumed. Earth-295 In the Age of Apocalypse universe, Lilandra was killed by D'Ken when she tried to stop him from using the M'Kraan Crystal X-men: The End Lilandra is featured in this alternate future storyline, still heavily affected by the attacks of Cassandra Nova. Other Media Television X-Men: The Animated Series X-Men: The Animated Series X-Men: The Animated Series Lilandra appeared in the third season of the show, particularly in the adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga. In her first appearance, she asked help from Professor X to defeat her brother D'Ken. After defeating her brother, she and Xavier fell in love with each other up to the point when Lilandra even asked him to stay in their planet but refused to continue his dream of a peaceful co-existence between mutants and humans. Lilandra was abducted by Black Tom Cassidy with the help of Juggernaut and Gladiator. She was unconscious. To save her, Professor X made a telepathic link between the two of them but was destructed by the Gladiator. When Banshee accompanied the X-Men to their castle after knowing her location, the X-Men fought to save her even if they were clueless about who she is. Jean Grey then appeared and aided the situation. Lilandra then became a temporary ally during the Phoenix Saga. At the end of the series, Magneto received the news that Professor X was dying. To help his friend, he use his powers with the conjunction of Professor X's and used it to contact Lilandra and give him a better cure in their planet. She was voiced by Camilla Scott. Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Lilandra in Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Lilandra in Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Lilandra appears in the episode "It's A Wonderful Smash," voiced by Nika Futterman. In the show, she and the Supreme Intelligence are shown negotiating a peace treaty that will bring an end to the war between the Kree and the Shi'ar. However, the truce depends on the Guardians of the Galaxy being able to bring a cosmic artifact known as the Orb of Truth. After the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. and the Guardians are able to recover the Orb from the Collector, the treaty is successfully signed. Games Avengers in Galactic Storm Lilandra's cameo Lilandra's cameo Lilandra appears in the background of the Chandilar stage, viewing the battle from atop her throne. She also plays a minor role in the game's story mode, which loosely adapts the "Operation: Galactic Storm" crossover from the comics. The player must defend Lilandra from the evil Doctor Minerva, who seeks to assassinate her as part of a Kree plot. After Minerva is defeated, Lilandra orders a devastating attack on the Kree homeworld as payback for their treachery. Marvel Ultimate Alliance Marvel Ultimate Alliance Marvel Ultimate Alliance Lilandra also appears in the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game. In the game, the throne is taken from her by her sister, Deathbird. An optional quest involves whether the player saves her from her confinement. The player has to prevent the Shi'ar starship from self-destructing by smashing power nodes within a time limit. In one of the rooms that hold power nodes, Lilandra is seen hooked up to what is described as a "torture chamber". To save her, a computer near her has to be smashed. It is very durable and hard to destroy, putting further stress on the objective to smash the power nodes before time runs out and the ship self-destructs. Also, if the power nodes are destroyed beforehand, the computer can no longer be harmed. If the player decides to rescue her, the Shi'ar would give Earth advance technology to wipe out all diseases and hunger on Earth and the Shi'ar's technology will eventually enable humanity to colonize other planets. If the player doesn't, the Shi'ar will refuse to help the heroes when they fail to stop an asteroid that comes to obliterate the Western coast of the United States. Outside of that, she has special dialogue with Storm when she's trapped X-Men: Battle of the Atom X-Men: Battle of the Atom X-Men: Battle of the Atom Lilandra is featured in the mobile card game "X-Men: Battle of the Atom" based on the comic book story with the same name. Her cards are: Lilandra Merchandise Marvel Legends Marvel Legends Lilandra was featured in the HeroClix figure game. A Lilandra figure was featured as part of a Marvel Legends fan poll from Hasbro, but did not win and never saw mass production. LogoFLUANXOL Tablets 0,25 mg FLUANXOL Tablets 0,5 mg FLUANXOL Tablets 1 mg SCHEDULING STATUS: S5 PROPRIETARY NAME (and dosage form): FLUANXOL Tablets 0,25 mg FLUANXOL Tablets 0,5 mg FLUANXOL Tablets 1 mg COMPOSITION: Each tablet contains flupenthixol dihydrochloride equivalent to flupenthixol 0,25 mg, 0,5 mg or 1 mg. PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION: A 2.6.5 Miscellaneous Structures PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: Fluanxol contains flupenthixol which is a low dose neuroleptic of the thioxanthene group. In low doses (up to 3 mg/day) Fluanxol has an anxiolytic, antidepressive and mood stabilising effect and certain activating properties. Fluanxol is mainly effective through a blockade of central monoamine receptors, especially in the dopaminergic system. Maximum serum concentration is reached about 4 hours after oral administration. The bioavailability of Fluanxol is about 40%. Protein binding is above 95%. The half-life is about 35 (19-39) hours. There are large individual variations in the therapeutic serum concentration. Fluanxol is metabolized mainly in the liver and is excreted mainly via the faeces and the urine. INDICATIONS: Short term symptomatic treatment of depression of mild to moderate severity (with or without anxiety). CONTRA-INDICATIONS: Fluanxol is not recommended for the treatment of severe depression requiring ECT and/or hospitalisation. In states of excitement or overactivity (including mania). Pre-existing CNS depression or coma, bone marrow suppression or phaechromocytoma. Severe alcohol, barbiturate and opiate intoxications. Safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Not recommended for children. WARNINGS: Fluanxol should be used with caution in patients with Parkinson’s disease, severe arteriosclerosis, senile confusional state or severe hepatic, renal, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular or respiratory disease. DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Adults: Standard initial dosage is 1 mg as a single morning dose. After one week the dose may be increased to 2 mg if there is inadequate clinical response. Daily dosage of more than 2 mg should be in divided doses up to a maximum 3 mg. In view of the activating properties of Fluanxol it is advisable to give the last dose of the day no later than 4.00 p.m. Patients often respond to Fluanxol within two or three days. If no effect has been observed within one week at maximum dosage the drug should be withdrawn. Elderly: Standard initial dosage is 0,5 mg as a single morning dose. After one week, if response is inadequate, dosage may be increased to 1 mg once a day. Caution should be exercised in further increasing the dosage but occasional patients may require up to a maximum of 2 mg a day which should be given in divided doses (1 mg at breakfast time and 1 mg at about 4.00 p.m.). SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Side-effects: Insomnia is the most frequent adverse event. However, as Fluanxol is a thioxanthene which is structurally related to the phenothiazines, side-effects may include: Central depression. Dry mouth, constipation, difficulty with micturition, blurred vision, mydriasis. Tachycardia, ECG changes, cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension. Delirium, agitation, catatonic-like states, insomnia, depression, miosis, EEG changes and convulsions, nasal congestion, minor abnormalities in liver function tests, inhibition of ejaculation, impotence, priapism. Hypersensitivity reactions include urticaria, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, and contact sensitivity. A syndrome resembling systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported. Jaundice. Prolonged therapy may lead to deposition of pigment in the skin or eyes: corneal and lens opacities have been observed. Pigmented retinopathy, photosensitivity reactions. Haemolytic anaemia, aplastic anaemia, thrombocytopenic purpurea, potentially fatal agranulocytosis. Acute dystonia, a parkinsonism-like syndrome, akathisia, late effects include tardive dyskinesia and perioral tremor. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Amenorrhoea, galactorrhoea, gynaecomastia, weight gain, hyperglycaemia and altered glucose tolerance. Hypo- or hyperthermia. Fluanxol is less likely than the phenothiazines to cause sedation but initially it may cause drowsiness. Patients should be warned of this possibility if driving or operating machinery. Alcohol may potentiate this effect. There have been isolated reports of sudden death with phenothiazines. Phenothiazines have not been reported to cause dependence of the type encountered with barbiturates or benzodiazepines. However, mild symptoms resembling the withdrawal symptoms of dependence have been seen following the abrupt withdrawal of phenothiazines from patients receiving prolonged maintenance therapy. Special Precautions: Patients with closed-angle glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, myasthenia gravis, or prostatic hypertrophy. Epileptic patients as phenothiazines may lower the convulsive threshold. Elderly and debilitated patients may be more prone to the adverse effects of phenothiazines. Phenothiazine effects on the vomiting centre may mask the symptoms of overdosage of other agents and or disorders such as gastro-intestinal obstructions. Regular eye examinations are advisable for patients receiving long-term phenothiazine therapy and avoidance of undue exposure to sunlight is recommended. Haematological parameters should be monitored periodically. Interactions: When given with other drugs that product postural hypotension dosage adjustments may be necessary. Phenothiazines have been reported to reduce the antihypertensive action of guanethidine and other adrenergic neurone blockers. Phenothiazines may potentiate the adverse effects of other antimuscarinics. Concomitant administration of metoclopramide may increase the risk of neuroleptic-induced extrapyramidal effects and antiarrhythmics which prolong the QT interval may increase the likelihood of ventricular arrhythmias. KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT: See side-effects and special precautions. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. THE SCIENCES What is known about tachyons, theoretical particles that travel faster than light and move backward in time? Is there scientific reason to think they really exist? October 21, 1999 Raymond Y. Chiao is professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He replies: "Briefly, tachyons are theoretically postulated particles that travel faster than light and have 'imaginary' masses. Editor's note: imaginary mass is a bizarre theoretical concept that comes from taking the square root of a negative number; in this case, it roughly means that a particle's mass is only physically meaningful at speeds greater than light.] "The name 'tachyon' (from the Greek 'tachys,' meaning swift) was coined by the late Gerald Feinberg of Columbia University. Tachyons have never been found in experiments as real particles traveling through the vacuum, but we predict theoretically that tachyon-like objects exist as faster-than-light 'quasiparticles' moving through laser-like media. (That is, they exist as particle-like excitations, similar to other quasiparticles called phonons and polaritons that are found in solids. 'Laser-like media' is a technical term referring to those media that have inverted atomic populations, the conditions prevailing inside a laser.) ADVERTISEMENT "We are beginning an experiment at Berkeley to detect tachyon-like quasiparticles. There are strong scientific reasons to believe that such quasiparticles really exist, because Maxwell's equations, when coupled to inverted atomic media, lead inexorably to tachyon-like solutions. "Quantum optical effects can produce a different kind of 'faster than light' effect (see "Faster than light?" by R. Y. Chiao, P. G. Kwiat, and A. M. Steinberg in Scientific American, August 1993). There are actually two different kinds of 'faster-than-light' effects that we have found in quantum optics experiments. (The tachyon-like quasiparticle in inverted media described above is yet a third kind of faster-than-light effect.) "First, we have discovered that photons which tunnel through a quantum barrier can apparently travel faster than light (see "Measurement of the Single-Photon Tunneling Time" by A. M. Steinberg, P. G. Kwiat, and R. Y. Chiao, Physical Review Letters, Vol. 71, page 708; 1993). Because of the uncertainty principle, the photon has a small but very real chance of appearing suddenly on the far side of the barrier, through a quantum effect (the 'tunnel effect') which would seem impossible according to classical physics. The tunnel effect is so fast that it seems to occur faster than light. "Second, we have found an effect related to the famous Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen phenomenon, in which two distantly separated photons can apparently influence one anothers' behaviors at two distantly separated detectors (see "High-Visibility Interference in a Bell-Inequality Experiment for Energy and Time," by P. G. Kwiat, A. M. Steinberg, and R. Y. Chiao, Physical Review A, Vol. 47, page R2472; 1993). This effect was first predicted theoretically by Prof. J. D. Franson of Johns Hopkins University. We have found experimentally that twin photons emitted from a common source (a down-conversion crystal) behave in a correlated fashion when they arrive at two distant interferometers. This phenomenon can be described as a 'faster-than-light influence' of one photon upon its twin. Because of the intrinsic randomness of quantum phenomena, however, one cannot control whether a given photon tunnels or not, nor can one control whether a given photon is transmitted or not at the final beam splitter. Hence it is impossible to send true signals in faster-than-light communications. "I refer interested readers to our paper 'Tachyonlike Excitations in Inverted Two-Level Media' by R. Y. Chiao, A. E.
