Doomsday Clock moves 30 seconds closer to calamity
On Jan. 26, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced that the Doomsday Clock has now been moved 30 seconds closer to global calamity, with the minute hand now resting at two and a half minutes to midnight. Maintained since 1947 by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Science and Security Board, the imaginary Doomsday Clock represents a countdown to the possible annihilation of humanity.
This is the closest the clock has been set to midnight since its inception. Several factors are considered before the direction of the minute hand is adjusted. Nuclear threats, climate change threat, rise in the sea level and change in amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are a few of the considerations.
According to experts, the expanding nuclear weapons development and the continuing tests in countries such as North Korea, India and Pakistan were issues of grave concern. The antagonistic relationship between U.S. and Russia is not helpful, either. Thomas Pickering (R), former U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said that he hopes U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin would “take their now-budding relationship to something further and more meaningful in the area of nuclear arms reduction.”
Lawrence Krauss (L), director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University, also highlighted that cyber-technology and biotechnology were emerging as a global threat, citing that the increased reliance of governments and organization on the internet exposes critical resources such as nuclear power grids, financial holdings and private information to exploitation through hacking.
