When still human, he used a subspace prototype to gain intangibility powers and commit crimes. After a short career, his subspace prototype was damaged by Sandy the Golden boy (later Sand), and he was thrown into the dimension between dimensions, the Subtle Realms. However, he was saved and transformed by the demonic entity, the King of Tears, who drafted him as his servant and sent him back to Earth. Upon returning, he found that his face has been so horribly disfigured that anyone who saw him died. He used this in addition to his now inborn intangibility powers to continue his life of crime. Creation Johnny Sorrow was created by Geoff Johns and David Goyer. He first appeared in Secret Origins of Super Villains #1. Major Story Arcs Eventually, in service to his master, he managed to open a portal which allowed the King of Tears to come to Earth. However, the demon was thwarted by the Spectre, who trapped the essence of the King of Tears after being unable to destroy it. Years later, Johnny Sorrow stole the King of Tears' essence from Jay Garrick's laboratory, using the Injustice Society (composed of Icicle II, Tigress III, Killer Wasp, Geomancer and Blackbriar Thorn) as a diversion. Using the hero the Scarab as a host, he brought the King of Tears back to Earth. He was again thwarted by the Justice Society after being hit at light-speed by Jay Garrick and then being shown a recording of his own face by Dr. Mid-Nite. After all this, Johnny Sorrow was presumed dead. Hawkgirl mentioned that he was presumed dead before as well. She was correct, as he was simply banished to another dimension again. Wandering through the Abyssal Plains, Sorrow encounters Despero; his corporeal form had been destroyed. They devise a plan to enact revenge on the Justice Society and Justice League. With the aid of Despero he returns, releasing the Seven Deadly Sins into Justice Society and the Justice League and the world. After the Justice League and the Justice Society freed themselves of the sins, they confronted Johnny Sorrow. He had the upper hand until he was stopped by Kyle Rayner and Alan Scott. The two teams then used Sorrow's own gaze to incapacitate Despero and foil their plan. Johnny Sorrow came back to Earth again with the aid of the Injustice Society (now composed of Icicle II, Tigress III, Thinker, Solomon Grundy, Gentleman Ghost, Wizard and Ragdoll I). They stole the Cosmic Key from the Justice Society headquarters, and used it to bring Johnny Sorrow to Earth, sacrificing Ragdoll I in the process. As Johnny Sorrow returned, the rest of the Injustice Society fought some members of the League of Assassins. Johnny Sorrow killed much of the League of Assassins, with the exceptions of Talia and Nyssa al Ghul. The Injustice Society used the Cosmic Key to regroup in the Ghost Zone, where they planned their next attack on the Justice Society. Recently, Johnny resurfaced again, but without his companions at this time. He employed the Strike Force to abduct Stargirl and deliver her to him in exchange for two million dollars. They agreed and attacked the Justice Society during opening of the new JSA museum. In the middle of the battle Arthur Pemberton grabbed Stargirl and fled from the battlefield using jetpack. Fulfilling the task, he killed the rest of his team by exploding their belts. Later, two members of the Strike Force came to the abandoned cinema (headquarters of Johnny Sorrow) to take their money, but Johnny only revealed the truth about his strong feelings to Courtney before killing them by detaching the mask from his face. The JSA arrives in the middle of a brawl between the Injustice Society and Arthur Permberton's troops. Johnny Sorrow and the Injustice Society teleport away. Sanderson Hawkins has a prophetic dream. In it, Johnny Sorrow has summoned the King of Tears as his servant. Sand's dream quickly becomes reality. With help from the reluctant Injustice Society, Johnny Sorrow summons the King of Tears. He tells the Justice Society that the only way to get rid of it is to give him Stargirl. Stargirl unhappily listens. She breaks the Cosmic Rod and Johnny Sorrow takes her to some part of the Subtle Realms, where he vanishes. He takes the guise of Atom-Smasher, and takes Stargirl to a different part of the Subtle Realms. Stargirl, thinking he is Atom-Smasher, kisses him. At this point Johnny Sorrow reveals his identity and tells Stargirl the truth. Her love activated a spell to turn Johnny Sorrow human, which is all he really wanted. The final piece would be to kill her and the real Atom-Smasher. Before Johnny Sorrow can do so, Anna Fortune accidentally brings the Subtle Realms to Earth. The JSA confront Johnny Sorrow. In revenge for almost killing him, King Chimera shows the now mostly-human Johnny Sorrow his own face. Knowing he will die otherwise, Johnny Sorrow tells King Chimera how to stop the King of Tears, who is decimating the area. Stargirl kills the King, sending Johnny Sorrow back to the Subtle Realms where he can recover. DC Rebirth Johnny Sorrow has joined forces with Emerald Empress, the original Doctor Polaris, Rustam, and Lobo to form The Nightmare Army. The team is lead by Maxwell Lord. It is revealed that Sorrow along with the other members Lords freed were the first Suicide Squad led by Amanda Waller. Known Powers and Abilities Anyone who sees Johnny Sorrow's face dies, with occasional exceptions. One example is when Sorrow entered the Rock of Eternity and confronted Shazam. Upon seeing Sorrow, Shazam turned to stone. Johnny is not immune to this power himself. Johnny Sorrow also has the powers of intangibility and teleportation, as well as levitation. He becomes tangible though, when he removes his mask. He has been shown as able to reform his mask. Firestorm in one instance transmuted his mask into tar, taking Sorrow off guard. Sorrow reformed the mask shortly after. He has been shown as able to manipulate energy attacks, as well as magical attacks. He is able to contact others while he is trapped in other dimensions, like the Subtle Realms. Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman: The Movie That Never Was We're taking a close look at Joss Whedon's unproduced Wonder Woman script in the wake of Whedon's move to DC. After shaping the MCU as director of both Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, he has recently been announced as the writer and director of the DC Extended Universe’s Batgirl film and he filled in on Justice League directorial duties for Zack Snyder for the final months of that project. Of course, this isn’t the first time Whedon has been considered for a major behind-the-scenes role in a Wonder Woman movie (hey, Wonder Woman is in Justice League, this counts!). Let’s take a look at the Wonder Woman script he wrote more than 10 years ago (which has been leaked in its entirety online) that never made it to the screen… 00:23 05:31 Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman script. The year is 2006. Spider-Man 2 proved just two years ago that comic book franchises could be both successful and good. Iron Man will not launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe for another two years. We are at the beginning of the current heyday of on-screen superhero franchises. AD AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW Though Warner Bros. made Batman Begins in 2005 and Superman Returns in 2006, there were no moves to include the films in any kind of Shared Fictional Universe. Even 2007’s near miss Justice League movie wouldn’t have had anything to do with Warner Bros. other DC-inspired movies. Enter Joss Whedon, a TV dude with a rabid, yet relatively small following. Though he will go on to make some of the biggest superhero movies of all time, the creator/showrunner of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly has yet to prove himself on the cinematic stage (he had written and directed Serenity, released in 2005, but the film, sadly, barely made back its budget at the box office.) Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has already been struggling to make a Wonder Woman movie for a decade. Ivan Reitman, perhaps best known as the director of Ghostbusters, was looking to produce and possibly direct a Wonder Woman movie back in 1996. Like so many Hollywood projects, the movie never came to fruition. Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures decided to take another crack at it, and although writers like Todd Alcott (Antz) and Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) had tried their hands at drafts, Joss Whedon took a shot at shaping the story. Here’s what he came up with… What is the shape of Whedon’s Wonder Woman story? AD Like the current Wonder Woman movie, Whedon’s Wonder Woman begins with Steve Trevor crash landing in Themyscira. Unlike the new film, however, this is all present-day, giving the story in general a completely different feel, even if it is interested in many of the same themes. AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW Steve is a former soldier who is on his way to deliver much-needed supplies to refugees in the developing world. When the Amazons sentence him to death as per their law, a world-weary Steve accepts his fate, simply asking that the supplies be delivered to the people who need them. This was a bit of a plot hole, in my opinion. If the Amazons are so worried about interacting with the world of men, how, exactly, are they going to sneak these supplies into war-torn Albania? Anyway… Diana ends up saving Steve by challenging her mother to combat. Ultimately, her mom wins, but her daughter’s passion is enough to convince Hippolyte to let Steve go. Your email address Subscribe The bulk of the story’s action takes place in Gateway, an American city with a certain magnetism and attractiveness, despite the inequality that defines its very existence. Diana learns about the world of men as she tries to combat the crime that has sprung up from poverty and inequity, more or less taking down one bully at a time in her efforts to save the world. The film’s Big Bad is Strife, Ares’ nephew and the uncontrollable pawn of Callas, the rich CEO of technology company (aka weapons manufacturer) Spearhead. Callas and Strife have a mechanical Khimaera at their beck and call with which they plan to destroy large segments of the city. When Diana gets in their way, Strife takes Steve as a hostage, convincing Diana to shackle her powers. Now a mere mortal, the god of chaos banishes her to South America far from Gateway and from Callas’ planned destruction of the city. After a brief, harrowing trek through the jungle, where Diana must learn to exist without her Amazonian powers, our heroine saves the city, with the help of Steve and some of the other friends she has made along the way. Though Strife may have fallen, Callas and Ares remain as villains to potentially recur in future Wonder Woman movies. AD If only… AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW Is it any good? A lot of the online feedback about Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman script is negative. Many readers feel that fans dodged a bullet. I can see the criticisms. It isn’t the best thing Whedon has ever written, nor would it have likely been the best superhero movie ever made. However, in the context of where the superhero movie audience was at the time (i.e. not fatigued by countless origin stories), I think this would have held its own, especially with the right cast and director. It’s also important to note that this is an unproduced script. Likely, the script would have undergone some changes from this draft and over the course of production. Sure, the bones of the story likely would have stayed the same, but it would have been a bit more polished, a bit more informed by the realities of production. That being said, there were narrative choices made in Diana’s script that could have been better. The biggest example is Whedon’s choice to change Strife from a goddess, as she was in the comics, to a god. I would have liked to see Diana fighting a female villain. Though Callas acts as one of the bad guys, her villainous role is ultimately pushed aside to make space for Strife and Ares as the story’s true bad guys. Whedon also did a poor job developing many of the supporting characters in the script. Though Steve had a few friends who became Diana’s allies in the ultimate fight, they were all mostly interchangeable. I would have especially liked to see Diana get one well-developed female friendship after leaving Themyscira. But, again, who knows what might have changed in this script if it was produced. Whedon’s Diana. Like all of Whedon’s characters, Diana is flawed (I mean that as a compliment). She means well, but there is much she has to learn about the human world. Of course there is: she has never been here, raised far away on Themyscria. AD It’s actually a pretty great critique of privileged Americans’ sometimes problematic relationship to “heroism.” Privileged people with their hearts in the right place often try to solve problems without acknowledging all that we don’t know and understand about those places and those problems. At its most meme-able, it is privileged college kids spending their summer breaks participating in humanitarian programs that aren’t often as genuinely reciprocal as those college kids like to think. AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW At one point, Steve tells Diana: You look at this [mural], you see dragons [to slay]. I see buildings coming down. And the people in those buildings die … You’ll make your show, fight your fight and people will love you for it, and then you’ll need you for it and it’ll start to grate, to bore you and one day, you’ll just go back home to paradise. Because every day you wake up knowing you can just go back to paradise. You’re not a hero, Diana. You’re a fucking tourist. The speech highlights some of the potential problems of Whedon’s Wonder Woman — namely Steve’s jaded dickishness and Diana’s smarmy hero complex — but it also highlights its strengths: a critique of how a superhero’s massive privilege can be a valid problem. It took the superhero genre a while to take on similar themes with Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman (I suppose). Diana might come off as a bit brash in Whedon’s script, but, again, I think with the right casting and direction, she would have been a hero that audiences could not only look up to, but relate to. I like that Whedon made her physically invincible, as well. Before temporarily losing her powers, Diana can notably be wounded by bullets (though not fatally). This made the stakes of the battle scenes a bit higher. Why it didn’t make it to the big screen. So what happened? Whedon worked on the Wonder Woman project for two years before dropping out due to “creative differences,” that broad, vague explanation that is so often given. The clearer explanation: Warner Bros. didn’t like Whedon’s script or vision for the character. Here’s what Whedon wrote on Whedonesque at the time: You (hopefully) heard it here first: I’m no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest… so tight! Okay, stay calm and I’ll explain as best I can. It’s pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated. Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views. The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I’m a free man. AD After ditching Whedon’s script, Warner Bros. wouldn’t make a solo Wonder Woman movie until, well, now. A decade later. AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW Wonder Woman would have been a game-changer for the superhero genre. The fact I can’t help going back to is: if this script had been produced, we would have had a female-led superhero movie a full decade before Hollywood ended up getting its act together and bringing a female superhero to screen in a headlining role. If this version of Wonder Woman had done well, it could have changed the very shape of the superhero movie genre — and film history in general — over the past decade. And, even if it didn’t do well, it would have given something for girls and women to hold onto, a cinematic hero that actively demonstrated that they have a place in the reigning myths of pop culture. io9 published a great piece last week about the internet backlash surrounding the women-only Wonder Woman screenings Alama Drafthouse is holding in Austin and New York City. In it, Beth Elderkin outlined just how few female-led superhero movies there have been in the last century, writing: Since 1920, there have been about 130 superhero and comic book films with solo protagonists in the United States, both on the big and small screens. We’ve had trilogies for Blade, Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, among countless others. The Hulk has had at least three different films so far, each with different actors, and Spider-Man is on his third franchise in a decade, with at least one sequel already guaranteed. Do you know how many of those 130 films had female leads? Eight. The number drops down to zero when you narrow it down to the last nine years, since the premiere of Iron Man and the MCU and the start of the superhero film as the most powerful Hollywood genre. Those are both appallingly low numbers representing a reality that I think can be easy for some to brush aside in a culture where patriarchy is the status quo. "We wanted to be sure of the connectivity and we wanted to be sure that we had the right targets.” Earlier, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. action was a “proportionate military response” taken together with diplomatic measures, including consultation with coalition partners. “The operation sends an unambiguous message: President Biden will act to protect American and coalition personnel," Kirby said. While cognoscenti hold a special place in their hearts for such early fabrications as Michelle Remembers and The Satan Seller, the pièce de résistance of the genre was Maury Terry’s enthralling 640-page bestseller,The Ultimate Evil, which attributed the Manson, Zodiac and Son of Sam murders to a global satanic underground masterminded by a sinister cult known as the Process Church of the Final Judgment, led by the shadowy and charismatic Robert de Grimston, who had disappeared from public view in the early ’70s. De Grimston and his new wife, Mary Ann, had decided to leave Scientology and create their own program of psychological and spiritual development, based on the use of an e-meter and self-examination in an intensive interview scenario. In the course of his reminiscences, Wyllie reveals what has been rumored for some time — that de Grimston was more or less a dummy figurehead for the megalomaniacal schemings of Mary Ann. Mary Ann MacLean’s childhood was defined by poverty and neglect in Glasgow, before she became a high-end prostitute in London, supposedly hooking up with Sugar Ray Robinson for a time, before she recognized that her particular talents could be put to more lucrative effect in other areas. As the de Grimstons’ “compulsions analysis” sessions attracted more and more disaffected protohippie types, the group had remarkable spiritual experiences, and began suspecting that they were not only on the cutting edge of experiential psychological research but were also in fact a chosen spiritual elite ordained to herald the endtimes. According to Terry and his ilk, what followed was a rapidly expanding, systematic program of ritual sacrifice and atonal music, designed to precipitate the apocalypse through the summoning of a Celtic death god named Samhain. Wyllie’s account is somewhat more prosaic and farcical, following the Process Church’s random global peregrinations, incoherent channeled theology (which gave equal billing to Satan, Lucifer, Christ and Jehovah) and increasingly totalitarian bureaucratic hierarchy from the point of view of an overworked acolyte, de Grimston, who believed he was being guided along a path of spiritual evolution by an incarnate goddess, or at least a secret Sufi master. Who’da thunk?) — most of the anecdotes in Love Sex Fear Death (abetted by numerous shorter memories and period documents) are sordid in a less titillating sense, a gradual unraveling of a seemingly sincere moment of collective inspiration into all-too-familiar routines of coercion and greed, charting Wyllie’s inevitable disillusionment with and departure from the New Religion he had helped to invent and define. It is an unglamorous saga of indentured panhandling, Dumpster-diving, child neglect, public-access proselytizing, and Heathers-level Machiavellianism — detailing the insidious banality of evil more convincingly than Process theology or Maury Terry ever could. De Grimston was forced out by Mary Ann in 1974, and after unsuccessfully trying to start a Process revival, gave up and got a real job. Mary Ann kept revising and renaming the group, gradually removing all references to Satan and Lucifer before realizing that it was easier to persuade the rubes to part with their hard-earned jack for the protection of poor little defenseless animals than to facilitate the immanentization of the eschaton. Ultra-ironically, Wyllie recounts a rumor that her death in 2005 was the result of an attack by feral dogs that had broken out of their “sanctuary.” Who says Jehovah doesn’t have a sense of humor? From 1964 to 1974, Processeans were traveled throughout Europe and North America and organized Traveling, Administrative, and Open Chapters. Church leaders wrote books such as "Exit", "As It Is", "For Christ Is Come", and other titles which the Church used as its reference texts. By mid-1974, several Chapters in the US and one in Canada were operating, with headquarters in Washington DC Free shops for clothing and Free Kitchens for food dispersed donations in all of the Chapters. In the communities where Chapters were located, Processeans took on a variety of projects and received grants from local and state government agencies. Mass feeding stations were established in 'skid-row' areas where Chapters were present; these operated on a daily basis for years. Ministers and Lay-members took part in community action programs and responded to natural disasters alongside the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Weekly visitations to homes for the elderly, blind, and mentally handicapped were a regular weekly occurrence. In some Chapters, prison ministries were set-up. The Process welcomed all through its doors. The Church legally ordained women as Priests. The was an equal balance of the sexes in the ruling body and in the operational and administration of the Church and its Chapters. It performed wedding ceremonies, baptisms and ordinations. The Church opposed the Vietnam War but left the decision of military enlistment up to the individual. A crisis occurred in 1974. Robert de Grimston gradually removed himself from daily Church administration & activities. Disputes arose between the ruling body of the Church and The Teacher. This ultimately led to the dismissal of Robert de Grimston as Chief Theologian. The ruling body legally dissolved The Process. In 1987 a vigorous expansion effort began. Private Chapters were established in which individuals operated programs aimed at helping the homeless become self-sufficient. In 1988, the Society Of Processeans was formed as a largely secular organization. In 1993, the faith and teachings of The Process were declared obsolete, the Archives were destroyed and the Church dissolved. Members continue, organized as a self-help organization. The Church obtained apologies and retractions to the book after it brought about a suit against the publisher. Because of the time it took to bring about the retractions, a large portion of book sales had occurred; so many of the books (without retractions) are on shelves today. The connection between Manson and the Process has not completely been corrected. Manson was never a registered member of The Process. A group of Processeans visited him in prison and confirmed that he had never been involved in the local Chapter. More recently, a book was published that claimed a second mass murderer, David Berkowitz, the "Son of Sam" was also a member of The Process. The book stated that The Process was a network of killers and that Berkowitz was a look-out who did not take part in all of the killings. This conflicts with the police investigators who believed that Berkowitz was operating on his own. If they thought otherwise, the police certainly would have investigated the Church. Berkowitz claimed to have been a Satanist, and to have converted to Evangelical Christianity in prison. He claimed that the "Sam" in "Son of Sam" came from the name of the Celtic God of the Dead, Samhain (which he pronounced "Sam-hane"). His story is suspect, because: bullet his pronunciation of "Samhain" is incorrect; bullet the Celts never worshiped a God of the Dead; bullet there is no Celtic God by the name of Samhain; bullet Satanists do not worship Celtic Gods, and bullet the Process Church no longer existed at the time of the Son of Sam murders. In reality, Samhain means "end of summer." It would also mark the franchise’s return to its mythical routes after WW84 took things in a different direction. According to Sutton, WW3 will be much more serious than the recently released sequel, which many have criticized for its somewhat goofy nature. This altered tone is nothing to do with the response to WW84, however, but “because of the time and contemporary setting.” Just as Jenkins has hinted in interviews, the threequel will apparently move things forward to the modern day. Jolie, the tabloid posited, was positively “livid” that Gadot had swooped in underneath her and “stolen” the iconic role that Elizabeth Taylor had made famous. “Angie’s dream was to play Cleopatra, the role that made Elizabeth Taylor an icon,” a source revealed. Jolie has been attached to a Cleopatra movie for nearly 10 years now, and has spoken over the years about her desire to play the Egyptian ruler. All those years have now gone to waste, the source told the tabloid, and Jolie knows just who to blame. It was going to be the part that won Angie an Academy Award for Best Actress, and now that’s over thanks to Gal, who will be playing the Queen of the Nile instead. “Angie is insulted and upset,” the source continued. “She feels she was born to play Cleopatra and it was no secret that she’d been working on the script and meeting with top directors for the project for years.” All that bitterness and resentment has allegedly found itself a target in Gal Gadot, the tipster ominously concluded. It’s likely a huge disappointment to Jolie that her Cleopatra film never got its day in the sun, but it seems very unrealistic that she’d be furious with Gal Gadot of all people over it. Jolie has been trying to get her film off the ground for almost a decade now, and a lot has changed in Jolie’s life since she first confirmed she wanted to play the Queen of the Nile. Besides, there can be more than one Cleopatra movie, which means Jolie still has a shot at the iconic role. This outlet probably just wanted to exploit the new film’s announcement in order to entice readers. This is far from the first time a tabloid has used Jolie’s well-publicized desire to play Cleopatra as evidence of a feud between herself and another A-list celebrity. Last year, two of the Enquirer’s sister outlets, OK! and Star, both claimed Jolie was battling with Lady Gaga after rumors emerged that the A Star Is Born actress was in the running to star as Cleopatra. The latter publication later insisted that Bradley Cooper would star in the film as well. Both accounts were entirely false, Gossip Cop found. Ra's was interested in science from an early age. Unable to learn any science living as a nomad, he abandoned his tribe to live in the city, where he could conduct his scientific research. He became a physician and married a woman named Sora, the love of his life.[3] Ra's discovered the secret of the Lazarus Pit, and he saved a dying prince by lowering him into it. The prince, who was sadistic to begin with, was driven completely insane by the Lazarus Pit. He proceeded to strangle Sora, whom he has already had his eye on for some time. The ruler of the city, unwilling to admit to himself his son's culpability, declared Ra's guilty of the crime and sentenced him to a slow, tortured death in a cage with Sora's corpse.[3] However, Ra's was set free by the son of an elderly blind woman, despite having failed to save her. The man felt that he owed Ra's a debt for easing his mother's suffering during her last few hours. Ra's and the son headed into the desert to seek the tribe that Ra's was born into. Ra's convinced the head of his tribe, his uncle, to follow Ra's in his quest for revenge by promising the downfall of the king of the city. By understanding the germ theory of disease hundreds of years before anyone else, Ra's was able to infect the prince with a deadly virus by sending him contaminated fabrics. When the ruler of the city came to ask Ra's to cure the prince again, Ra's killed both him and his son. Ra's then led his tribe to raze the city to the ground and kill all of its inhabitants. Subsequently, Ra's declared himself the "Demon's Head", after desecrating the altar of Bisu.[3] Building an Empire Ra's spent the next several centuries journeying the world. During this time, Ra's, his uncle, and the boy used the Lazarus Pits to prolong their lives until an incident in London. Ra's caught the boy writing his own memoirs in their original language, of which Ra's had forbidden all records. During a battle, Ra's killed the boy and fled to use a Lazarus Pit. When he returned to their home in London, his uncle had vanished with the remnants of their historical records. Over time, he became a master of many forms of combat, notably fencing. He also built up vast wealth and created The Demon, a large international organization known as "The Demon", dubbed after his own codename "The Demon's Head".[4] Inside this organization there were various factions, most notably The League of Assassins, which was sometimes called "The Demon's Fang" or "Demonfang".[citation needed] During his journeys across the world, Ra's came across the Infinity Island in the Indian Ocean and discovered a special Lazarus Pit at the core of the island. Using his army of soldiers, Ra's invaded the island and conquered the natives of the place, turning them into slaves and gaining resources to expand his empire. For centuries, Ra's kept the island as a secret place, making the world believe it was an abandoned island. During all those years, Ra's used the Lazarus Pit to expand his lifespan.[5] Years later, Ra's used his organization during World War II to fight against the Axis powers in order to stop the war. A casualty from such efforts was the death of a close soldier, forcing Ra's to raise the man's son as his own. The teenager by the name of Quinlan developed a bad attitude after his parents' deaths, which used to upset Ra's wife, Melisande. Quinlan eventually discovered Ra's Lazarus Pit, but he was caught by Melisande. The young man fled the scene, but pushed Melisande into the pit, killing her. Ra's lost his wife and surrogate son, who later adopted the alias of Qayin and became an international terrorist.[6] In recent years, Ra's learned that Infinity Island was bought by some Bruce Wayne, and he set out to destroy the man and acquire his business empire. It was then, that Ra's learned the best kept secret in Gotham City.[5] Batman As the leader of the "Demon", Ra's had control over the League of Assassins, but the League was run by a few of Ra's most trusted people. Unfortunately, in the modern days, Ra's had a falling out with the former president of the League, Dr. Darrk, who kidnapped Talia as a way to get revenge over Ra's. Talia was eventually rescued by the dark hero from Gotham City, Batman, and she killed Dr. Darrk in self-defense.[7] After these developments, Ra's became aware of the impact that Batman had on his daughter. Enter the Demon Enter the Demon Shortly after, Ra's reached Batman, seeking his help in finding his missing daughter, who was apparently kidnapped in the same way as Batman's ward, Dick Grayson. However, Ra's had everything planned as part of a quest to test Batman's abilities and skills. When Batman learned Ra's intentions and rescued Robin, he demanded to know why Ra's put him through all that and Ra's explained that he needed to make sure he was a suitable heir for his empire. He explained that his daughter, Talia, was in love with Batman and Ra's was willing to give him her hand in marriage if he proved to be a worthy successor, which Batman proved beyond any doubt.[8] Batman didn't answer Ra's straight away, and Ra's would often keep in contact with the "Detective", informing him of strange crimes for him to solve. The first time, Ra's asked Batman to capture a rogue scientist, who was planning to spread a plague using a synthetic formula.[9] Not long after this, Ra's planned the murder of an American scientist and with help from Dr. Moon, they tried to learn confidential information from the scientist's brain. Ra's plan was thwarted by Batman, who finally realized the nature of Ra's activities and their rivalry started.[10] Later, Ra's travelled to his hideout in Switzerland in order to recover his vital strength. Eventually, Ra's died and his men started the process to revive him. Batman tried to bring Ra's to justice, but when he learned that Ra's was dead, he dropped his quest. Duel to the Death Duel to the Death It was then that Talia activated the machine that dropped Ra's on the Lazarus Pit, bringing him back from the dead once again.[11] With his strength increased and his mind crazed, Ra's attacked Batman and his friends before Talia could stop him. She then helped Ra's escape from Batman and they travelled to one of Ra's secret bases in the desert, where Ra's started to gather supplies to rebuild what Batman had destroyed and hasten his plan to cleanse the world. However, Batman soon found him and Ra's challenged Batman to a duel with swords to the death. Their combat lasted for hours and Ra's came up victorious when Batman was stung by a scorpion. Ra's left Batman to die, but Talia gave him the antidote and allowed Batman to recover before he could finally capture Ra's al Ghul. Ra's was then carried away from his desert fortress by Batman, who planned to deliver him to the authorities.[12] Bat-Murderer While locked in his cell at the Gotham Prison, Ra's planned his revenge against Batman. Soon, the Dark Knight was blamed for the murder of Talia and Ra's was eventually interrogated by Batman about this event. Ra's confessed that he planned Talia's death in order to frame Batman and after revealing the truth, he shot himself, making it look as if Batman had also killed him.[13] However, it was all part of a plan to turn the Gotham City authorities against the Dark Knight. Batman eventually found the truth and confronted Ra's, who had faked his and his daughter's death, turning Batman into an outlaw. The ultimate goal was to force Batman to join him as his heir, but the Caped Crusader refused and tried to take Ra's al Ghul back to prison. In the final confrontation, Batman was distracted saving Talia's life, which allowed Ra's to remain free, even though it seemed as if he died inside a burning circus tent.[14] Ra's then reappeared during a mock criminal court to determine Batman's killer and he acted as the judge during the whole charade, unaware that it was all a plan by the Dark Knight to capture the Joker.[15] Afterwards, Ra's set in motion his next plan, which consisted of marrying Batman with Talia and keep him busy while Ra's and his men looted Gotham in order to steal diamonds for a special project. As usual, Batman managed to overcome Ra's trap and Ra's was forced to retreat away from Gotham in defeat.[16] League of Assassins and Lazarus Affair Ra's al Ghul eventually lost control of the League as most of its members defected in favor of Sensei's leadership. In order to weaken the League's defenses, Ra's al Ghul manipulated information, which caused a conflict between the League and Batman after the League murdered Kathy Kane, the former Batwoman. This was part of Ra's ultimate plan to gain total control over the League.[17] Ra's was forced to work with Batman in order to prevent the League from retrieving a powerful formula[18], and a short time later, Ra's learned of Batman's success in cornering the Sensei. To prevent Batman from taking down Sensei and the League entirely, Ra's drugged Batman, taking him out of the way and challenged the Sensei, but the building they were in collapsed to the ground, apparently killing both Ra's and Sensei.[19] Lazarus Madness Lazarus Madness Ra's however, survived the encounter and started a grand scheme to financially ruin Bruce Wayne and seize his corporation. Part of his plan was also to kidnap Batman and force him to join his army.[20] Batman refused and Talia was almost killed by one of Ra's henchmen during their confrontation, which in turn forced Ra's to save his daughter using the Lazarus Pit on Infinity Island. However, Talia finally defected from his side and an enraged Ra's blamed Batman for this outcome. Thus, a deadly confrontation started and Ra's fought Batman until he accidentally fell to the Pit. Ra's rose stronger and crazier than before, but when he fell into the pit a second time, Ra's was apparently killed as the volcano of Infinity Island exploded due to the unusual activity of the pit. For a brief time, Ra's al Ghul was once again presumed dead.[5] Son of the Demon Main article: Batman: Son of the Demon Because Ra's' body had fallen into the Lazarus Pit, he couldn't die and he soon returned to life. His next plan consisted of the genocide of a large part of the population of Gotham, but it was thwarted by Batman and Talia, and once again, Ra's was apparently killed, victim of his own scheme.[1] As usual, Ra's didn't die and soon resumed his activities. While restoring one of his Lazarus Pits, Ra's was visited by Batman and Talia, who were trying to find and stop the international terrorist known as Qayin. Because of his past with the terrorist, Ra's made an alliance with Batman in order to stop Qayin once and for all. Their combined efforts allowed them to put an end to Qayin's reign of terror, but their alliance came to an end when Talia forced Batman to leave after an apparent miscarriage. Whatever plans Ra's had were put on hold, allowing everyone to grieve for their loss.[6] Contagion and Legacy Main articles: Batman: Contagion and Batman: Legacy Ra's returns to prominence and comes dangerously close to realizing his dream of worldwide genocide when his organization unleashes a deadly virus known as Ebola Gulf A (a.k.a. "The Clench") in Gotham City, putting Batman in conflict with a force he seemingly cannot defeat. A cure is eventually located by Batman and his allies, though the mastermind behind the outbreak is not discovered. Learning that the Demon's Head still lives, Batman and his team circled the globe, preventing further outbreaks of the virus. Additionally, it is discovered that Ra's has allied himself with Bane, the man who once crippled and nearly killed Batman. Ra's considers Bane a potential heir to his empire, despite his daughter Talia's distaste for the brutish criminal. Eventually, a way to eliminate the Clench virus is deduced from an ancient "Wheel of Plagues" artifact whose knowledge has aided Ra's in the creation of the disease. But the immortal madman again eludes his foes. JLA: Tower of Babel Main article: JLA: Tower of Babel Ra's discovers Batman's notes on the weaknesses of the other members of the Justice League of America (developed in the event of a villain gaining control of the JLA's bodies and using them against humanity) and uses them to try to destroy the group. Though defeated, Ra's does cause the (temporary) exit of Batman from the JLA, which occurs because of the mistrust of his teammates due to his contingency plans. Though some of the League's members resent the plans, they agree that the plans were created for the right reasons.[21] Batman does not realize Ra's is using his traps until it is too late, as he is busy searching for the corpses of his parents, which Ra's removes to distract him. Talia, disillusioned with her father and his plans, leaves him to run LexCorp for former U.S. President Lex Luthor, before selling the company to Bruce Wayne for his Wayne Foundation to aid Batman and Superman's victory over Luthor. Ra's blames Batman for his failed relationship with Talia, and stages a plot where he tries to separate Batman from his heir, Dick Grayson (Nightwing) shortly before Wayne officially adopted his now fully grown ward as his son. The plan fails, and Wayne and Grayson go ahead with the adoption. Ra's would also be involved with Bruce's second adopted son, Jason. After the boy's death at the hands of the Joker, Talia discovered that somehow Jason was alive and Ra's was willing to take the boy to his side to learn about his death "ruse". However, Jason's mind was broken and years of taking care of him caused Ra's to want to get rid of him. Talia used one of Ra's Lazarus Pit to heal Jason's mind and body, unleashing the wrath of Ra's upon them both.[22] Ra's has a romantic fling with Black Canary. Black Canary is injured and healed in the Lazarus Pit, which also restores her Canary Cry that she lost years earlier.[23] Death and the Maidens Main article: Batman: Death and the Maidens Nyssa, furious at her father for abandoning her in a concentration camp, begins plotting to destroy him. Nyssa befriends Talia and then kidnaps and brainwashes her. Nyssa plots to destroy all hope and optimism in the world by assassinating Superman with Kryptonite bullets she steals from the Batcave. While Batman stops Nyssa from killing Superman, he is unable to stop her from mortally injuring her father. A dying Ra's reveals that this is all part of his greater plan to ensure that his daughters, both initially dissatisfied with his plans, will realize that he is correct in his perceptions about the world and what needs to be done to it, and that they would come to accept their destinies as his heirs. Ra's' plan works: both Nyssa and Talia become the heads of The Demon and the League of Assassins. Talia disavows her love for Bruce Wayne, and both sisters declare Batman their enemy. However, it is too late for Ra's, as Nyssa stabs her father through the heart, seemingly killing him for good. To ensure Ra's will not return, Batman oversees the body's cremation.[24] Head of the Demon Talia is prompted to read the history of Ra's al Ghul to her son Damian by a mysterious figure from Ra's past: the White Ghost.[25] Unbeknownst to her, the White Ghost plans to use Damian as a vessel for Ra's return. However, mother and son manage to escape before the plan is completed. After the escape, Batman confronts the White Ghost; he fights Batman, but accidentally ends up falling into a Lazarus pit. Batman Annual 26.jpg Resurrection Main article: Batman: The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul Talia al Ghul takes her son Damian Wayne to the Australian outback where he is tutored in the secret history of his grandfather, Ra's al Ghul. Talia is unaware that a former servant of Ra's, an albino named White Ghost, plans to use Damian as a shell for the soul of Ra's to return to Earth. Realizing that this process would kill Damian, Talia saves her son from his fate at the last minute. However the essence of Ra's is still able to return to our plane of existence as a living corpse, still needing Damian to stabilize his form. After he manages to get a renewed body, Ra's al Ghul, moves his base of operations to Gotham City where it is revealed that a remnant of his son Dusan's consciousness still remains within him. This arrogance attributes to the brazen move to Gotham and a subsequent ninja attack on Batman, which indirectly leads to the discovery of a map of all the known Lazarus Pit locations across the globe. Batman then infiltrates Ra's al Ghul's new Gotham penthouse headquarters and easily defeats his horde of ninjas and Ra's himself. To ensure Ra's is not a constant threat within Gotham City, Batman comes up with the false identity of "Terry Gene Kase," and plants it along with credible photos, medical records, and police records for both Blackgate Penitentiary and Arkham Asylum. Batman takes an unconscious Ra's directly to Arkham where it is believed he really is the prisoner "Terry Gene Kase," a criminal with multiple personality disorder who has just been transferred to Arkham to finish out multiple life sentences. Along with attaching false information and a false identity to Ra's al Ghul's file, Batman attaches a false prescription of potent medication that ensures slurred speech and next to zero mobility. However, the orderlies miss Ra's dosage once, which allows him to become conscious enough to escape from Arkham.[26] Some time later, Ra's contacted Nightwing and asked him to travel to his secret location. During the meeting, Ra's asked Nightwing about Batman's fate and after learning of Bruce's death, Ra's started a fight against Nightwing, in which he was defeated.[27] Shortly after, Ra's commanded the White Ghost to follow Michael Lane's activities after he became the owner of the Suit of Sorrows.[28] Journey with Red Robin Ra's later shows interest in the Red Robin's journey for the then-deceased Batman. The Return of Bruce Wayne Main article: Bruce Wayne: The Road Home Ra's al Ghul was informed by his pupil, Prudence, that Red Robin was teaming up with a new vigilante by the name of Insider. Ra's immediately deduced that Insider was none other than Bruce Wayne and he was eager to meet his old enemy again.[29] When Ra's learned that Vicki Vale had deduced the identities of every "Bat" in Gotham, he spread the word out through Gotham's underground.[30] Ra's then sent the Seven Men of Death and White Ghost to eliminate her.[31] When they failed, Ra's confronted Vicki himself. However, before he could kill her, the "Insider" arrived and revealed himself as Bruce Wayne. He was able to dissuade Ra's from killing her and Ra's left with the promise of meeting again.[32] 31st Century In a possible future timeline, Ra's al Ghul took over the identity of Industrialist Leland McCauley who by that time had been appointed President of the United Planets. When the lost Legionnaires came back to Earth they were surprised to learn that President Brande had been impeached and that McCauley was now in office. The Legion were made fugitives and a warrant was put out for their arrest. Whilst on the run they discovered the decomposed body of the real McCauley dumped in the sewers of New Metropolis. However they were able to unmask Ra's Al Ghul to show the galaxy who he really was. The Legion defeated him and his Oversight Watch and thwarted his plans to jump-start the evolutionary process of humanity. A stock of cloned bodies of the Demon's Head were found and, for a time, the Legion assumed that this Ra's Al Ghul was a clone too. Brainiac 5 realized later that the resurrection process of the Lazarus Pit to which Ra's Al Ghul had submitted himself for decades had changed him. He is literally the Lazarus Fires and the cloned bodies were simply vessels for this "sentient blood". Swordsmanship: Ra's is a master swordsman, training even Batman in the ways of the blade. Weaponry Notes Ra's al Ghul was created by Julius Schwartz, Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams. The name of the character was first coined by Schwartz. He first came across the word "Algol", which is the name of a "Demon Star". The name of the star comes from the Arabic (or its Semitic equivalent) al ghul, which means "a ghoul". He then combined this with the word "raz" from the Hebrew meaning "head". Thus "raz al ghul" is the "head of the demons" (ghouls).[35] O'Neil and Adams then developed the character further, following Schartwz's initial concept. Batman: Birth of the Demon provides a rough figure of 500 years for Ra's al Ghul's age. However, Azrael #6 (July 1995; written by Ra's al Ghul's co-creator Dennis O'Neil) places Ra's closer to 450 years old. "I appear to be a vigorous fifty. In Batman Annual #25 (published in 2006) Ra's Al Ghul is described as a "700-Year Old International Terrorist". However, in this publication it is also written that "time is more fluid than believed". This is noted in reference to Superboy Prime causing several such anomalies within the DCU continuity during the time leading up to the events of 'Infinite Crisis'. There has been no definitive account of Ra's Al Ghul's age following the conclusion of the 'Infinite Crisis' and the generation of 'New Earth'. Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal. Trivia Ra's al Ghul is always accompanied by a servant known as Ubu, who is also an especially dangerous fighter. It should be noted that rather than being a single individual, Ubu is actually a title held by a line of replaceable servants. Along with Malhar Naik, he has been one of the League of Assassins' leaders. Ra's al Ghul is among Batman's most formidable foes. Not only can he physically and mentally challenge "the Detective" (the name by which Ra's always refers to Batman), but he has also deduced Batman's secret identity (in his first appearance, he realized that Batman would need to possess certain equipment, and research revealed that Bruce Wayne alone bought what Batman would need). When Ra's was kept in Arkham Asylum his assumed identity was American, not Egyptian. It remains unknown exactly how old Ra's al Ghul is (see Notes above). All that is known is he has lived well beyond a normal human life span. However, every time Ra's uses the Lazarus Pit, he grows closer to the one death that cannot be reversed — i.e. the pit will no longer be able to restore him.
