The War Zone Roger Ebert January 14, 2000 May contain spoilers NOW STREAMING ON: Powered by JustWatch It must have been something like this in medieval times, families living in isolation, cut off from neighbors, forced indoors by the weather, their animal and sexual functions not always shielded from view. Tim Roth's "The War Zone," brilliant and heartbreaking, takes place in the present but is timeless; most particularly it is cut off from the fix-it culture of psychobabble, which defines all the politically correct ways to consider incest. The movie is not about incest as an issue, but about incest as a blow to the heart and the soul--a real event, here, now, in a family that seems close and happy. Not a topic on a talk show. ADVERTISEMENT The movie takes place in winter in Devon, which is wet and gray, the sky squeezing joy out of the day. The family has moved from London "to make a fresh start," the mother says. They live in a comfortable cottage, warm and sheltered, life revolving around the big kitchen table. Mum (Tilda Swinton) is very pregnant. Dad (Ray Winstone) is bluff and cheery, extroverted, a good guy. Tom (Freddie Cunliffe) is a 15-year-old, silent and sad because he misses his friends in London. Jessie (Lara Belmont) is 18 years old, ripe with beauty. This looks like a cheerful story. 00:07 / 01:35 Roth tells it obliquely, sensitive to the ways families keep secrets even from themselves. Early in the film the mother's time comes and the whole family rushes to the hospital; there's a car crash, but a happy ending, as they gather in the maternity ward with the newcomer, all of them cut and bruised, but survivors. Back at home, there is a comfort with the physical side of life. Mum nurses her child, in kitchen scenes like renaissance paintings. Tom is comfortable with his sister's casual nudity while they have a heart-to-heart talk. Mum helps wash her men at the kitchen sink, Jessie dries her brother's hair in the laundry room, the family seems comfortable with one another. ADVERTISEMENT Then Tom glimpses a disturbing part of a moment between his father and his sister. He challenges Jessie. She says nothing happened. Something did happen, and more will happen, including a scene of graphic hurtfulness. But this isn't a case of Tom discovering incest in his family and blowing the whistle. It's much more complicated. How does he feel about his sister, and about her relationship with her new boyfriend Nick? What about his father's eerie split personality, able to deny his behavior and see Tom's interference as an assault on their happy family? What about the mother's willingness not to know? What about his sister's denial? Does it spring from shame, fear or a desire to shield Tom and her mother from the knowledge? ADVERTISEMENT And what about a curious episode when Jessie and Tom visit London, and Jessie almost seems to have set up Tom to sleep with one of her friends--as what? Consolation? A bribe? Revenge? The movie's refusal to declare exactly what the London episode means is admirable, because this is not a zero-sum accounting of good and evil, but a messy, elusive, painfully complex tragedy in which no one is driven by just one motive. When Tom is accused of destroying the family and having a filthy mind, there is a sense in which he accepts this analysis. One critic of the film wrote that a "teenage boy (from the big city, no less) would surely be more savvy--no matter how distraught--about the workings and potential resolutions of such a situation." Only in textbooks. When you're 15, what you learn in social studies and from talk shows is a lot different from how you confront your own family. ADVERTISEMENT Incest is not unfamiliar as a subject for movies, but most incest stories are about characters simplified into monsters and victims. We know intellectually that most child abusers were abused children, but few films pause to reflect how that lifelong hurt reflects itself in real situations. The father here is both better and worse because of his own probably traumatic childhood. He must long ago have often promised himself that he would be different than his own father, that he would be a good dad--loving, kind, warm, cheerful--and so he is, all except for when he is not. When he's accused of evil, he explodes in anger--the anger of the father he is now and also the anger of the child he once was. For a moment his son is, in a sense, the abuser, making Dad feel guilty and shameful just as his own father must have, and tearing down all his efforts to be better, to be different. Unsurprisingly, "The War Zone" affects viewers much more powerfully than a simple morality tale might. It is not simply about the evil of incest, but about its dynamic, about the way it does play upon guilt and shame, and address old and secret wounds. The critic James Berardinelli says that when he saw the movie at the Toronto Film Festival, a viewer ran from the theater saying he couldn't take it anymore and went looking to pull a fire alarm. Roth was standing near the exit and intercepted him, becoming confessor for an emotional outpouring that the movie had inspired. ADVERTISEMENT Roth is one of the best actors now working, and with this movie he reveals himself as a director of surprising gifts. I cannot imagine "The War Zone" being better directed by anyone else, even though Ingmar Bergman and Ken Loach come to mind. Roth and his actors, and Stuart's screenplay, understand these people and their situation down to the final nuance, and are willing to let silence, timing and visuals reveal what dialogue would cheapen. Not many movies bring you to a dead halt of sorrow and empathy. This one does. INDIE FOREIGN DRAMA Roger Ebert Roger Ebert Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism.

Zisa, Tyr's Wife by December Fields-Bryant Augsburg Arms 1We first learn of Tyr’s wife in the lore through Lokasenna. Loki spake: 40. “Be silent, Tyr! | for a son with me Thy wife once chanced to win; Not a penny, methinks, | wast thou paid for the wrong, Nor wast righted an inch, poor wretch.” In Germany, the goddess Zisa is sacred to the nomadic Suevi in the area of Augsburg, Germany. This warlike tribe (or group of tribes) were a threat to the Roman Empire especially along the Rhine region. Zisa is mentioned in manuscripts from the 12th to 14th centuries which reference a victory against the Roman Empire attributed to the goddess. In the 1st century BCE, Titus Annius laid siege to Augsburg (then called Zizarimin Her honor though another source suggests the original name was Ziusburg, after Ziu) just before Her feast day (September 28). Unfortunately for the Romans, many Swabian warriors were coming to Zizarim for the festival, and on Her day they attacked the Romans and throttled them. Codex Monac circa 1135, Codex Emmeran circa 1135, and Melchior Goldast's Suevicarum rerum scriptores are based on a first-century BCE record of a Swabian military victory over Roman forces. The record mentions a city where the inhabitants worshipped Zisa "with extreme reverence.” The connection to Tyr’s wife mentioned in Lokasenna comes from Jacob Grimm’s Teutonic Mythology. He makes an etymological connection between Tyr (called Ziu in Germanic/Urglaawe branches of Heathenry) and Zisa. This connection is not unheard of with couplings like the twin lovers Frey and Freyja and is also used to make connections between Holle (also known as Ulla) and Ullr. If this is the case, one could also suggest that, like Frey and Freyja, Ziu and Zisa could also be twin lovers. The connections between these two are not mere scholarly conjectures. There is also the connection of Tyr’s day or Tuesday. Zisa was so widely revered among the Suevi that their dialects called Tuesday "Zistag" not after Ziu but after Her. The Diocese of Augsburg banned the name Zistag and called it "Aftermontag" (After-Monday). UPG among those who know of Zisa and Ziu also uphold the connection. After the colonization of Christianity, Zisa was conflated with the Virgin Mary, but in her veneration was called the Lady Undoer of Knots (Maria Knotenlöserin). This is Zisa’s realm of power - the ability to undo the knots in Wyrd. This is not the only monotheist veil pulled over Our Lady. The church of St. Peter am Perlach stands on the grounds of Her temple at Zisenberg in Augsburg. Zisa, Goddess of Fertility Augsburg Arms 2Her symbol is the pine cone and appears in Augsburg even in some churches. As the pine cone protects the seeds, so does she protect Her people. The pine cone symbolizes protection, regeneration, and continuity. Her connections with fertility and seeds/agriculture as well as Her name is often cause for conflation with the goddess Ceres. She is also called the Isis of the Suebi by Grimm. This connection may have been made by Roman invaders, searching for a name for this powerful goddess. Zisa’s name lends itself to another fertility attribute. Cisaeara (Latin for "altar of Cisa"), coming from Zisa’s holy place (now Augsburg) is also translated to "mountain on which siskins (zeisige, a type of finch bird) nest" or "mountain in the form of a breast (zitze)." She is also said to be connected to the prehistoric find, the "Venus of Hohle Fels" figurine. This feminine body form dates back 35,000-40,000 years ago, made from mammoth ivory and suggesting roots in “Our Lady of the Mammoth.” Her Symbols: Pinecone (see the Augsburg coat of arms) Web of Wyrd Knots The rune Teiwaz Her Holy Days: Zisatag - Sept. 28 Faschtnacht - Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday ©2020 Raven Kaldera • cauldronfarm@hotmail.com • Hosted by NorthernPaganism.org Last modified on August 11, 2020.

Entertainment What Happened to Bridget Marquardt from “The Girls Next Door”? By Brooke Carter Jan 2, 2017 0 Share Bridget Christina Marquardt is best known for being one of the three Playboy bunnies on the E! reality show, “The Girls Next Door”ーa series which focused on the lives of Hugh Hefner’s three girlfriends at the extravagant Playboy Mansion. After starting a relationship with the Playboy CEO in 2002, the blonde was invited to move into the mansion as one of Hefner’s many girlfriends; she eventually stayed at Hefner’s residence for seven years alongside “The Girls Next Door” co-stars, Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson. However in 2009, Marquardt broke up with Hefner and moved out of the mansion, being the last out of the three original Playboy models, to do so. Besides her role on the E! reality series, the former play bunny has also been featured on various television shows such as the “Celebrity Paranormal Project” and the American comedy, “Entourage”. After “The Girls Next Door” ended back in 2009, Marquardt was then offered her own reality series titled, “Bridget’s Sexiest Beaches”ーa travel documentary, in which she was the host of. But where is the former Playboy bunny now? The blonde had appeared in countless television shows a few years back, but now that it is 2016, it almost seems as if she’s been slowly dwindling away from the small screen. Is the reality star still involved with show business? According to the blonde’s filmography, the last show (in which she had more than a single guest appearance) had been the documentary series “E! True Hollywood Story”, which ended back in 2011. What has the former playboy bunny been up to? Where is Bridget Marquardt in 2016? Bridget Marquardt’s Early Life birdget2Bridget Christina Marquardt was born on September 25, 1973. Despite having been born in Tillamook, Oregon, Marquardt mostly grew up in Lodi, California as that was where she was raised after having moved there with her family when she was a young girl. When she was in fifth grade, her parents got a divorce. Marquardt’s mother eventually remarried a few years later, consequently leading Marquardt, along with her younger brother Edward to move into their stepdad’s ranch. The siblings later gained a younger half-sister named Anastasia. As a young teen, the blonde spent her first two years of High School attending Gale Secondary and later transferred and graduated from Lodi High School in 1990. She eventually went on to graduate with an Associate Degree from the San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. The studious Marquardt then went on to enrol in the California State University in 1994 from which she graduated from in 1998 with a Bachelors in communications and public relations. Three years later, she earned a Master’s Degree in Communication from the University of the Pacific in 2001. After earning her Master’s, she returned to school yet once again for a graduate level course in broadcast journalist through the UCLA Extension program. An interesting factーthe final exam of this journalism course had caused Marquardt to miss her first Playboy photoshoot. Bridget Marquardt and Her Start at a Playboy Playmate Career bridget3The blonde was first introduced to the idea of being a Playboy Playmate from her friends. She later sent a personal letter to the Playboy company, inquiring about its details prior to attending San Joaquin Delta College. When she was 25 years old, she officially entered the Playboy’s Millennium Playmate Search in hopes of becoming a Playboy Playmate. Having been unsuccessful in the audition, Marquardt eventually moved to Los Angeles where she appeared in small television roles and worked as a model. It took the blonde two unsuccessful tries at testing for Playboy before she was finally accepted and invited to to enter the Playboy Mansion. It was not until October 2002, after over a year of visiting the residence, that Marquardt was finally invited to become one of Hefner’s mansion residing girlfriends. Bridget Marquart as a Playboy Bunny In The Reality Series “The Girls Next Door” bridget5In 2005, Marquardt starred in the E! reality series, “The Girls Next Door” as the third musketeerーthat is, as Hefner’s third girlfriend. The television show mainly focused on the lives of the three girls (Holly Madison, Kendra Wilkinson and Marquardt herself) at the Playboy Mansion; Hefner and other celebrities have also made frequent appearances in the series. Not only did reality show “The Girls Next Door” promote Playboy Mansion life, but it also highlighted various other Playboy events such as the Playboy Jazz Festival, Playmate Test Shoots and Operation Playmate. The reality show quickly became a success on the E! Network and had its first season expanded from its original 8 to 15 episodes. In fact, the show was so critically acclaimed that Playboy eventually ended up publishing a nude pictorial of the three playboy bunnies on an issue of their 2005 magazine. Marquart appeared on the series for 5 years, from the show’s debut on August 7, 2005 to January 2009ーshe was the last one to leave the Playboy Mansion from the original trio. Her final appearance in Playboy was marked by a nude photo spread shot with her fellow former housemates, Madison and Wilkinson; it also served as a farewell to show “The Girls Next Door”. Ultimately it was this show that garnered her fame. Through “The Girls Next Door”, television viewers were able to appreciate the blonde play bunny’s personality; at that time, she was known as one of the three girls who were able to live a seemingly fantastic life at the Playboy Mansion. Marquardt and Life After Living at the Playboy Mansion bridget6After her departure from the Playboy Mansion and the reality series, Marquardt was offered her own travel documentary titled “Bridget’s Sexiest Beaches” on the Travel Channel, in which she would be host and co-producer of. In the show, the blonde takes the audience on a series of adventures exploring the beaches of various countries in the world and participating in the local nightlife and activities. The travel documentary series was released in March 12, 2009 and lasted for one season. A year later in 2010, the former Playboy bunny announced plans of producing her own reality seriesーit would follow her life after departing from the Playboy Mansion and focus on her current relationships. The pilot episode was quickly shot and sent off to E! for approval. However while the rest of the show was scheduled to start filming in April 2010, it was eventually cancelled as it was ultimately not picked up by E!. Marquardt later appeared in various other television shows including “Kendra”, “Holly’s World”ーa spinoff of the Playboy Mansion original, “Top Gear US” and “Celebrity Ghost Stories” in 2011. The blonde later appeared in KDOC’s “First Night 2013 with Jamie Kennedy”, a New Year’s Eve television special hosted by comedian Jamie Kennedy in 2013. More recently in 2015, Marquardt appeared in the Reality Television Awards as a presenter. In terms of relationships, Marquardt was rumoured to have started to date Nicholas Carpenter, an American film director, back in early 2009 after her breakup with Hefnerーthe couple are still today to this day. The pair got engaged in the fall of 2015 and currently reside together in a house purchased by the blonde in Sherman Oaks. They reportedly also have a Pekingese dog named Wednesday. What’s Bridget Marquardt Doing Now in 2016? bridget7On the television front, the former Playboy model has recently appeared in an episode of the American talk show, “Hollywood Today Live” back in May of this year. She has also made several appearances in the “Girls Next Door” spin off series, “Kendra on Top”, which focuses on the life of Marquardt’s former mansion-mate, Kendra Wilkinson. The blonde has guest appeared in three episodes to date. Besides making television appearances, something else appears to be eating up Marquardt’s timeーher wedding! Yes, it looks like after seven years of being in a relationship it looks like the 42 year old will finally be tying the knot together with fiancé, Nick Carpenter! Marquardt announced the happy engagement via Instagram in October 2015 with a photo of her diamond-encrused spider ring. We’re happy for her already! Wedding wise, the blonde has also surprised everyone by announcing that she will be inviting both Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson to her special day, despite the current feud between the two. To make things even more imaginably awkward, Marquardt has also invited former boyfriend, Hugh Hefner to the wedding. Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see how the wedding goes! Besides wedding news, Marquardt has also recently been in the headlines for having been on the receiving end of an apology by former “Girls Next Door” co-star, Kendra Wilkinson. This all started in 2009 after the two girls broke up with Hefner and moved out of the Playboy mansion; at that time, Wilkinson had slighted Marquardt by informing the media that the two co-stars were never friends. But still, better late than never, right? It looks like Wilkinson has taken it into her own hands by initiating the apology in a recent episode of Kendra on Top, which aired in May 2016. Their rocky past might just have been patched up in time for the blonde’s wedding! In addition to all that, the former Playboy model has also been occupying herself with making accessories for her new Etsy shop. Given that the reality star loves decorating and dressing for the holidays, it’s really no big surprise that she has opened her own store on Etsy, right? Her store offers a cute handmade selectionーeverything from aprons to hair clips! With both her wedding to tend to, and accessories to be made, it’s no wonder she’s been so busy! If you’d like to stay updated with Marquardt to keep up with everything that she’s been up to, you may be interested in knowing that she is active on both Instagram (@bridgetmarquardt) and Twitter (@Bridget). She also has an official Facebook page for those of you who perform the online blue and white platform! Around the Web

Playboy model Bridget Marquardt hasn't seen Hugh Hefner in years By Stephanie Nolasco , | Fox News Facebook Twitter Flipboard Print Email Hugh Hefner (2nd L) poses with Bridget Marquardt (L), Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson (R). Hugh Hefner (2nd L) poses with Bridget Marquardt (L), Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson (R). (Reuters) Bridget Marquardt was once the girlfriend of Hugh Hefner and the star of E!’s hit reality TV series, “The Girls Next Door,” but the Playboy pinup told Australia’s “The Morning Show” Monday that she hasn’t heard from her ex in years. “He told me there was always an open door, but I heard that that’s not quite true lately,” explained the 43-year-old model. “I called and tried to go to the mansion earlier this year… but I’m just getting the run around.” However, things weren’t always this way between Marquardt and the 91-year-old magazine mogul. She said the two stayed in touch “for a while” after she left the mansion in 2009. KENDRA WILKINSON SAYS PLAYBOY MADE A BIG MISTAKE “I was still going back to some of the parties. Occasionally, my boyfriend [Nick Carpenter] and I would go back,” she said. “I was still in touch with Hef — and then we kind of lost contact.” The Playboy founder may see things differently between the two. "To be frank with you, this is a bit silly," a rep for Hefner told Fox News. "Hef holds nothing, but the fondest memories of his time spent with Bridget and he continues to wish her all the best in her new life." Hefner married 31-year-old Playmate Crystal Harris in 2012. Marquardt has also been dealing with other personal woes. The model received unwanted news after she and Carpenter thawed her eggs, which she had frozen nine years ago. “None of my eggs survived,” she admitted. “It was devastating for me. All this time I thought I had an amazing insurance policy, but it didn’t work out. I thought I was doing the smart thing and the right thing, and I do still think it was. It just didn’t work out for me.”

Celebrities & Entertainment Books Holly Madison Opens Up About Nudity, Old Insecurities, and Kendra Her new book The Vegas Diaries, about reinventing herself after leaving the Playboy mansion, is out now. by PATTI GRECO MAY 18, 2016 Hair, Nose, Lip, Hairstyle, Eye, Eyelash, Style, Dress, Long hair, Beauty, GETTY This week, Holly Madison released her second book, The Vegas Diaries: Romance, Rolling the Dice, and the Road to Reinvention, which chronicles the years after she left the Playboy mansion, as she worked to rebuild her career and romantic life on her own, no Hugh Hefner in sight. To celebrate her release day, Cosmopolitan.com took Holly for a spin in a convertible, and even though she's seven months pregnant and we were stuck in New York City traffic, she agreed to let us capture it on Facebook Live. You can watch that video here (wind whooshing, honking, and awkward silences included), or just read this edited excerpt below. more from cosmopolitan The Infinity Ponytail | The Braid Up Previous Video Pause Next Video Unmute Current Time 3:27 Remaining Time -0:06 Captions Play in full-screen WATCH: The Infinity Ponytail | The Braid Up Can you describe your emotional state at the start of the book? You were like Tracy Flick, super ambitious, but also very insecure, it seems. I was feeling like I was at my own personal version of rock bottom ... I looked back and I felt like I had lived somebody else's life for so long and just felt bad about that. I was like, "Where am I gonna start now?" But I was excited about starting a new life at the same time. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW One of the things you mentioned a few times in the book, with regards to your dating life, is how a lot of men come to you with a lot of assumptions. What were the assumptions? When I was dating, I was really insecure about guys having assumptions, but I don't even know if they really did, or if I was just so paranoid and I assumed they did. I was scared that if they were interested in me, they must have an ulterior motive, they must want to be on TV or something like that. Or I assumed that they were judging me … so I definitely had a lot of paranoia about dating, a lot of insecurities, for sure. What's something that you were most embarrassed about putting in the book but decided to put it in anyway? When I was writing it, I was really enjoying the process — I wasn't embarrassed about anything. But then you get stage fright as a writer right before it comes out like, "Why am I even putting this out there? Why would anyone ever want to read this? Am I being conceited?" I don't know, I've read blogs by other writers, and I think those are common fears and anxieties before you put something out. I was really insecure about guys having assumptions, but I don't even know if they really did, or if I was just so paranoid and I assumed they did. I particularly love this one scene where you talk about how you thought the guy you were dating had left the hotel, so you took a really loud poop — and it turned out he was there. I was like, "What just happened??" Yeah, that was so embarrassing! I know, it kind of came out of nowhere, right? And then you just move on. I just never mentioned it! [Cosmo social editor Caitlin Scott, who is recording the video, chimes in with a reader question.] Megan wants to know if you have any advice for the girls entering the Playboy mansion these days? Well, I think it's a whole different world from when I was there … the way people get into the magazine now is actually legitimate, through modeling agencies. There's isn't a whole social world you have to navigate anymore, so it's a completely different world from when I was there, from what I've heard. Patti: Do you think it's a good move? Probably. No, not to do Playboy, I thought you meant do you think it's a good move to have the atmosphere change like that. I meant do you think it's a good move to do Playboy, given your experiences? I have mixed feelings on it because I don't have any bad feelings on nudity per se, I have more of a European attitude toward it, but at the same time, I do warn people that you can make that decision and think, "I'm an empowered woman and I'm making this decision" — but just be aware that people are going to judge you on it for the rest of your life and it never goes away. And one weird thing I've noticed is that if you've been nude before in anything, if it's just like a still photo for Playboy, people kind of assume you're going to be naked for anything [else]. Like, I've been on the set of a commercial where I was changing and somebody's just [like], "Oh, why don't I take a picture of you changing and leave it on the Internet?" and I'm like, "No, why would you even think that's OK?" I mean, they want to take your choice away from you. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW So you say no when you want to say no? Yeah, I mean, context is different for everyone. Some people wear garments under their clothes all the time for religious reasons, some people are comfortable undressing in a locker room but never take a naked picture. Some people take a naked picture but they would never do a porn. There's all different kinds of levels of comfort, but once you pose nude and people know that, they think you're OK being naked any time, and they just assume, and it's like, "No — not OK to film me in the dressing room. Not OK to leak a picture. Not OK to just invite me over to a photo shoot and assume I'm going to do nudity without telling me." Mouth, Dress, Advertising, Electric blue, Publication, Poster, Knee, Thigh, Blond, One-piece garment, DEY STREET BOOKS You're married now [to Pasquale Rotella]. What made your husband a good man for you? Oh, there's so many great things about him, I don't know where to start. He's a really amazing, solid person, and I think we met just at the right times in our lives where he was ready to settle down, and where I had felt like I finally found myself and was OK with myself, and it was just magic. You said in the book that a lot of men you dated wanted to know so much about Hef — why? Yeah, I don't know if that's really the case or if, again, that was me just being paranoid and like, "Oh, if people know about me, they're not going to want to be with me," or whatever. But your husband was chill about that. Yeah, I mean he's not, like, judgmental. What about the curiosity? That's different than judgment. Well, I don't think it's healthy for couples to talk about their past relationships in detail necessarily. I mean, would you want to tell gory details to [your boyfriend]? Probably not, no. And I would not want to hear them. Yeah, I wouldn't want to hear about other people they've been with. It's just not a good image. I don't think people should [it] have in their head. What are some things about dating that you learned along the way? It's easy when the relationship is crumbling or it just ended to look at the guy or girl, and just be like, "Ugh, what a jerk!" or, "Yuck, why was I with this person? They were so mean," but then it's really interesting to look back [and] learn about yourself. Like, I found I could flip the situation so many times, and see I was interested in that person for the wrong reason or I had unrealistic expectations about that person or I was putting up with things I shouldn't have put up with. So I learned so much from each person ... it's like that cliché inspirational Facebook post where you talk about "everyone comes into your life for a reason," but it's really true. [Caitlin asks another reader question.] A lot of people are talking about Kendra and they want to know if you could ever see yourself being friends with her again in the future. Um, yeah, I mean, I'm always very forgiving and there was always that part of our life that we have [together], but I wouldn't want to do anything that was staged for TV or anything that's artificial. I don't like the idea of a friendship being jerked around for TV, whether it's like, "Oh, let's have a feud today because it's good for ratings," or, "Let's make up today because it's good for ratings." That kind of a thing I wouldn't be into, but definitely forgiving and moving on, real life, I'm into. Patti: Do you feel the same way about Hef? Um, it's a little bit different. I don't really want to get into that. When was the last time you and Kendra talked to each other? Oh my gosh, I wrote about it in Down the Rabbit Hole, it was, like, four years ago? But she's said so much stuff since then. I know, but that part of my life is behind me, and I've just moved on, and I ignore when things get petty. Follow Patti on Twitter. Blanche Monnier Was Kept Hidden In Her Room For 25 Years, Just For Falling In Love By Gina Dimuro | Checked By Katie Serena Published June 1, 2018 Updated August 8, 2018 After the wealthy and prominent Blanche Monnier fell in love with a commoner, her mother did the unthinkable in an attempt to stop it. Blanche Monnier Wikimedia Commons Blanche Monnier in her room in 1901, not long after she was discovered. One day in May 1901, the attorney general of Paris received a strange letter declaring that a prominent family in the city was keeping a dirty secret. The note was handwritten and unsigned, but the attorney general was so disturbed by its contents that he decided to investigate immediately. When the police arrived at the Monnier estate, they must have had some misgivings: the wealthy family had a spotless reputation. Madam Monnier was known in Parisian high society for her charitable works, she had even received a community award in recognition of her generous contributions. Her son, Marcel, had excelled at school and now worked as a respectable lawyer. The Monniers had also had a beautiful young daughter, Blanche, but no one had seen her in close to 25 years. Described by acquaintances as “very gentle and good-natured,” the young socialite had simply vanished in the prime of her youth, just as high-society suitors had begun to come calling. No one gave much thought to this strange episode any longer and the family went about their lives as though it had never happened. Blanche Monnier Is Discovered The police made a customary search of the estate and did not come across anything out of the ordinary until they noticed a putrid odor coming from one of the upstairs rooms. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the door had been padlocked shut. Realizing that something was amiss, the police smashed the lock and broke into the room, unprepared for the horrors that lay within. Blanche Monniers News YouTube A French newspaper recounts the tragic story of Blanche Monnier. The room was pitch black; its only window had been shuttered closed and hidden behind thick curtains. The stench in the dark chamber was so overwhelming that one of the officers immediately ordered the window to be broken open. As the sunlight streamed in the policemen saw that the horrendous odor was due to the rotting scraps of food that littered the floor surrounding a decrepit bed, to which an emaciated woman was chained. When the police officer had opened the window, it was the first time Blanche Monnier had seen the sun in over two decades. She had been kept completely naked and chained to her bed since the time of her mysterious “disappearance” 25 years earlier. Unable to even get up to relieve herself, the now-middle-aged woman was covered in her own filth and surrounded by the vermin that had been lured in by the rotting scraps. The horrified policemen were so overwhelmed by the smell of filth and decay that they were unable to stay in the room more than a few minutes: Blanche had been there for twenty-five years. She was immediately taken to a hospital while her mother and brother were placed under arrest. Hospital staff reported that although Blanche was horrendously malnourished (she weighed only 55 pounds when she was rescued), she was quite lucid and remarked “how lovely it is” was to breathe fresh air again. Slowly, her whole sad story began to emerge. Imprisoned For Love Blanche Paper New York Times Archives A 1901 New York Times news clipping reported the story in the United States. It turned out that Blanche had found a suitor all those years ago; unfortunately, he was not the young, rich aristocrat her family had hoped she would wed, but rather an older, poor lawyer. Although her mother insisted she choose a more suitable husband, Blanche refused. In retaliation, Madame Monnier locked her daughter in a padlocked room until she ceded to her will. The years came and went, but Blanche Monnier refused to give in. Even after her beau died she was kept locked in her cell, with only rats and lice for company. Over the course of twenty-five years, neither her brother nor any of the family servants lifted a finger to help her; they would later claim they were too terrified of the mistress of the house to risk it. It was never revealed who wrote the note that triggered Blanche’s rescue: one rumor suggests a servant let the family secret slip to her boyfriend, who was so horrified he went straight to the attorney general. Public outrage was so great that an angry mob formed outside of the Monnier house, leading Madame Monnier to suffer a heart attack. She would die 15 days after her daughter’s liberation. The story bears some similarities to the much more recent case of Elisabeth Fritzl, who also spent twenty-five years imprisoned in her own home. Blanche Monnier suffered some lasting psychological damage after her decades-long imprisonment: she lived out the rest of her days in a French sanitarium, dying in 1913. Next, read about Dolly Oesterreich, who kept her secret lover in her attic. Then, read about Elisabeth Fritzl, who was held captive by her father in her own home.

Her contribution to uncovering a mole in the British Embassy helped the Allies win the war. Photo by Museums Victoria on Unsplash It was almost the end stage of World War II. A train left from Ankara, and an American couple boarded it at the last minute. They shifted one compartment in the next station, bribed the train conductor for his silence, and said it was a honeymoon adventure. They were not a couple. The man was an agent of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and the woman was a German lady. The OSS was America’s World War II spy agency. Why did the OSS help a German escape in World War II? World War II Espionage: Photo by Stefan Kostoski on Unsplash Turkey in World War II remained mostly neutral. Germany heavily relied on Turkey for raw materials that powered its war efforts. Britain wanted Turkey by its side to safeguard its crude oil resources in Iraq. Turkey being neutral, amassed colossal gold reserves in World War II. As a neutral venue, Britain and Germany had their embassies in Turkey’s capital Ankara. Anakara soon became a hotbed of espionage activities. The German embassy had a mole in the British ambassador’s office. His name was Elyesa Bazna, and the Germans called him Cicero. Bazna was the driver of Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugessen, the British Ambassador to Turkey. Knatchbull-Hugessen had the habit of taking confidential documents from the embassy to home and worked in the night. Bazna had access to the ambassador’s reading room. He photographed the secret documents and passed them to Germans for which he was paid handsomely with fake British pounds by the Germans. Bazna thought he could continue his work and make a fortune out of it, but his luck was about to be tested. Nele Kapp: Photo by killian cartignies on Unsplash Nele Kapp was born as a German citizen. She worked as a nurse in Stuttgart, and as her father was on a diplomatic mission, she got a job in the German embassy in Ankara. Nele hated the Nazi government and wanted to do something about it. She contacted the US Embassy in Ankara and extended her support to spy for them. US Embassy accepted the offer, and she started to leak confidential information from the German embassy. Nele saw the excitement on the German ambassador’s face when he eyeballed photographs passed on by a Turkish man. Nele found them to be British government documents. She informed the US Embassy that there is a mole in the British Embassy. The OSS passed on this information to British intelligence, which tried to trap Bazna, but he escaped. Escape to the USA: Photo by Chandler Cruttenden on Unsplash Nele knew that her days are numbered and requested the US Embassy to transport her to the USA. The OSS drew up a plan for her escape. Nele went to a party with a few US Embassy secretaries and retired in their apartment. Nele’s hair was dyed black, and the OSS gave her a new identity. The next day a group of gentlemen visited the apartment escorted the ladies to a party. Nele was among them, and a OSS agent picked her up, and they drove to theAnkara railway station. The Tauraus train was on the platform. The train had two-portions where one half went to Istanbul, and another half went to Syria. Nela and the OSS agent boarded the first half, then in the next station shifted to the second half of the train. The OSS agent bribed the train conductor and said they were on an adventurous honeymoon trip. They alighted the train in the next station and went to a nearby British Royal Air Force (RAF). From there Nele was flown to Cairo and then to the USA. Bazna was termed as the most notorious Axis spy by British intelligence in World War II. Bazna almost disclosed the D-Day landing site to Germans. Nele’s contribution to uncovering Bazna’s espionage saved lots of lives and impacted the war’s outcome.

Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #219 Issue Date: July 1987 Story Title: Where Duty Lies Staff: Chris Claremont (writer), Bret Blevins (penciler), Dan Green (inker), Tom Orzechowski (letterer), Glynis Oliver & Petra Scotese (colorists), Ann Nocenti (editor), Jim Shooter (editor in chief) Brief Description: Alex is having nightmares about the X-Men and is determined to find out why. He makes his way to Xavier's mansion from New Mexico, but finds the mansion empty. He does stumble upon Magneto's diary, which leads him to the Hellfire Club. He arrives there and is soon met by Magneto who, as it turns out, is the new White King of the Club. Havok smells foul play and leaves without any answers. Later, he watches the Hellfire Club, waiting for Mags to leave. When he does leave, Havok follows him and ends up in the Morlock Tunnels. After following a far-off light, he finds himself in a secret meeting of the X-Men. He's soon discovered by Rogue and a fight ensues. Eventually Havok calms down and after hearing Storm's words decides to join the X-Men. Meanwhile, Polaris is back in New Mexico and being hunted by the Marauders. Luckily, she survives her house being blown up and takes them on. She eventually knocks Sabretooth out, traps Arclight in the ground and beats Scalphunter senseless. After she claims her victory they discover it was really Malice possessing Polaris that defeated them. Malice proudly announces she will be the new leader of the Marauders! Full Summary: (dream) Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where a costumed Havok has come to visit. He makes his way to the front door and blasts it open with his powers. He had called the mansion three times over the past few hours and there was never an answer. He thought something might have been wrong which is why he decided to bust into the place. He makes his way through the dark halls and doesn't see anybody. He goes into the headmaster's office and finds Cerebro smashed, but still there's no one around. He checks out Storm's loft and the Danger Room; nada. On top of all this, he finds no evidence of a fight. He starts to regret his previous rash actions. He wonders if the X-Men are just occupied at the moment, maybe even saving the world again. Havok enters an elevator and ponders his past decision not to join the X-Men. He reaches his floor and the doors slide open. Standing before him are the X-Men, except their faces look very wicked. Magneto welcomes Havok home and motions for him to come forward. He does so, but when he's out into the room Rogue grabs him from behind. He yells out, but is soon silenced as Rogue places her lips over his. He falls to the ground. The X-Men crowd around him, laughing. Havok wants to blast them away with his powers, but he can't; he's drained. Instead, the images before him start to blur and come together. Only Rogue stands out, and she too is stretching into nothingness. Everything fades to black. (present) Havok bolts upright in bed screaming. It was all a dream. However, he can feel his cosmic energy building up to dangerous levels inside him. The newly awakened Lorna watches as he jumps out of bed and runs outside. She follows him in time to witness a gigantic energy blast he unleashes into the night sky. She cries out and rushes over to his aid. She hands him a quilt to shield him from the bitter cold. She notices the ground where he was standing has been fused to glass. Havok's upset with himself for losing control. Lorna assures him it will be all right and brings him back inside. Inside, Lorna tries to comfort Alex. She uses her magnetic powers to make some chicken soup, while she holds him close to her. Alex complains that he had the dream again. Lorna is slightly alarmed because he's been having "the dream" every night since returning from New York. He goes on to say that it gets worse every time. Lorna brings up the fact that everything was fine when he went there. He tells her that that's what he remembers, but deep down inside he knows something is wrong - either with the X-Men or with him. He slams his fist down on the table and proclaims he will find out the truth. A bit later, Havok is packing a suitcase. He closes it and heads out to leave. He's surprised when he sees Lorna walk over with her own bag. Lorna says she's going with him. Havok tells her he doesn't want her to and after some persistence she backs down. They get into the jeep and buckle up. Lorna mentions to Alex that his flight out of Albuquerque leaves at dawn. Havok's a bit worried about making it to the airport on time, but Lorna has a solution. She levitates the jeep and flies them onward. She reminds Alex to call her if he needs her. Alex tells her not to worry. It's probably just nerves and paranoia and he should be home the next day. Off in the distance, three shadowed figures watch as the jeep takes off over the mountains. It turns out to be three of the Marauders: Sabretooth, Arclight and Scalphunter. Sabretooth thinks they should attack them both now. Both Arclight and Scalphunter tell him they need to wait because Havok is not their concern. Their next target is Polaris! Many hours later, Havok's already at Xavier's mansion. It's just as empty as in his dreams. Everything's as it should be except for the wrecked Cerebro. He sits down in the Cerebro chair and notices a journal kept by Magneto. He flips through it and finds an entry marked "Hellfire Club Meeting" and it's for that day. He wonders what Magneto has going on with the X-Men's deadliest enemies. Back in New Mexico, Scalphunter moves onto a boulder near Alex and Lorna's house. He uses his mutant power to create a new gun. He brings the newly formed weapon to his shoulder and takes aim. Inside the house, Lorna is sitting at a desk looking at a picture of Alex. Havok's recent actions have made her nervous. She senses something nasty is coming and wishes Alex were still around. Outside, Scalphunter yells to Arclight and tells her to start the attack. She takes the cue and unleashes a giant shockwave towards the house. Lorna flies backwards out of her chair, while stuff falls to the ground all around her. She wonders how an earthquake could have happened since the house is built on tectonically stable land. Her answer comes when Scalphunter fires his weapon, which demolishes most of the house. Scalphunter very proudly claims that Lorna is dead. Sabretooth tells him he's wrong. He can sense that she's still alive and takes off towards the house. Manhattan, Havok arrives at the Hellfire Club. An attendee takes his jacket and takes him to the library to meet "Professor Xavier". At first Alex is taken aback by her comment, but then remembers that Magneto has had to use a cover identity; Professor Xavier's older cousin. Alex walks in and finds Magneto talking to the White Queen. Magneto greets him cordially and Alex responds angrily. The White Queen interjects saying Magneto is the new White King of the Hellfire Club. Magneto confirms what Emma says and tells Havok the X-Men have forged an alliance with the Hellfire Club. He extends his arm for a handshake. Instead, Havok marches over to the White Queen and exclaims his disbelief that the X-Men would have any part of it. Magneto assures him that it's true and that Storm was a big proponent of the deal. Havok tells him he wants to hear it straight from her. Mags tells him that that won't be possible. Havok grows angrier and asks him why not. Magneto tells him that if he has a message, he can pass it on to the X-Men. Havok continues his outburst, accusing Magneto of abusing Xavier's trust in him as headmaster. Magneto grabs Alex's arm and warns him that recent times have been dangerous and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Havok storms out of the room and mocks Magneto one last time. Magneto is left to wonder if people will ever trust him or will his actions in the past condemn him for the rest of his life. Havok walks down the sidewalk, upset with the way he stormed out of there. He was afraid the White Queen was going to get inside his brain so he had to leave. He wonders if maybe that's what happened to the X-Men. Maybe they're prisoners... or worse. He decides he needs help and walks over to the Avengers mansion, totally forgetting it was recently destroyed. With that plan foiled, he calls Muir Island hoping Moira MacTaggert can help. He gets Callisto instead who tells him the X-Men are in New York and to contact Magneto. Alex asks about Cyclops and she rudely tells him to try the Yellow Pages and hangs up (behind Alex, a bus with an advertisement for X-Factor goes speeding by). Then he tries to call Lorna, but is told by the operator that there's line trouble. Alex chalks this up to life in the desert, turns about and walks back down the sidewalk. In New Mexico, Sabretooth's on the hunt. As he searches through the wreckage for Lorna, he yells to her that he's going to kill her. He tells her he has her scent and he will soon rip out her heart. Nearby, Lorna is huddled behind a huge rock. She's worried she won't last the night with Sabretooth and his pals running around. However, she's determined to put up a great fight. Sabretooth finally finds her and rears his head over the rock. He tells her it's time to die, but is suddenly knocked backwards as she magnetically lifts the rock into the air. She lets Sabretooth know that one of the reasons they chose to live there was because of the high iron content in the rocks. Then she manipulates the ground to wrap Sabes up. He tells her that steel can't hold him and manages to break free. He leaps at her, but she takes to the air. He claws her leg before she gets out of his reach. Scalphunter takes aim again and nails her with a light-beam energy pulse, causing her tremendous pain. She lets loose a scream and loses control. Back in Manhattan, Havok is in costume and sitting up in a tree. He's overlooking the Hellfire Club waiting for Magneto to leave. After a while, Magneto finally steps out of the building. Havok maneuvers through the tree branches and drops to the ground. He follows Magneto down some subway station steps. However, the station is closed and Magneto is nowhere to be found. There's a steel door nearby and Havok thinks Magneto might have used that to disappear. Alex focuses his power on the lock and gains access to the tunnel. He sees Magneto off in the distance on the maintenance walkway. Mags goes through a door and disappears once more. Havok gives chase and finds the door. It won't open, but that's the least of Havok's problems. A train is coming! Havok leans back as much as he can to avoid getting hit. All the while he wonders if Magneto might push him onto the tracks. As the train is passing, he turns around and uses his powers on the door. He pushes it open and is surprised to find a big drop off on the other side. He falls in the darkness and reaches out for anything. Luckily, his hand hits the ladder and he manages to grab hold. After a short breather, Havok makes his way down the ladder to the bottom of the shaft. When he reaches the bottom he realizes he's in the Morlock tunnels. Havok wonders why Magneto came down here. He supposes he might be recruiting more mutants for a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He notices a light off in the distance and decides to follow it. He observes some scorch marks along the wall. He supposes if anyone were caught in that fire blast, they'd be dead. He reaches the light and is shocked to find no Morlocks. Instead, it's the X-Men (minus Wolverine and Rogue) and the light's coming from Dazzler. He listens in as Storm talks. She mentions the Morlock Massacre by the Marauders and the loss of Colossus, Nightcrawler and Shadowcat. Havok is totally shocked by the news. She goes on to say that the Marauders hate the X-Men and she thinks they'll go to such lengths as to attack the people they care for. She definitely doesn't want to give up fighting, but also doesn't want to put their friends and family at risk. The only solution she can think of is to make the Marauders think the X-Men are dead. Havok can't believe his ears. He almost believes he's having another nightmare. Behind him, a shadowy figure approaches. Havok hears Betsy speak next. She wants to know how they can fool the Marauders into thinking they're dead. From behind Havok, the figure gets closer. Havok senses it and instinctively blasts away at the person. Luckily it's Rogue, otherwise the person would have been dead. Havok curses himself for such a rash action. He bolts down the passageway. His recurring nightmare is turning to reality right before his eyes. Back in New Mexico, Scalphunter and Arclight are searching for Polaris. They're in the middle of a dust storm and have to rely on Scalp's scanners. However, she's throwing off so much energy that the scanners aren't working. Scalphunter's surprised that Lorna is this good. He's confident they'll get her, though, because she's wounded. Suddenly, Sabretooth's flailing body comes flying through a dust cloud and right into Scalphunter, knocking him down. The ground opens up and swallows Arclight up. As she's falling, it closes back up, securing her head above ground and her body below it. She's squeezed so tight she can't trigger a shockwave. With both his teammates out of the fight, Scalphunter knows it's up to him. Unfortunately, his weapon modules take on a life of their own. They start flying about and slamming into him. In Manhattan, Havok's still on the run. He's looking back at his pursuers and doesn't notice the metal cables coming up out of the ground. He's ensnared, but unleashes a plasma blast and breaks free. Dazzler's hot on his tail and fires a photon light blast at him, hoping to scare him. Instincts take over again and Havok tries to fry Dazz. Luckily, Longshot's there and somersaults her out of the blast's path. Finally, Psylocke gets into Alex's head and tries to talk some sense into him. Havok still isn't sure what to do, but lets the X-Men approach him. He asks them about what happened at the mansion when he visited last. Storm is shocked he remembers and asks Psylocke how it could be. Betsy tells Ororo that Professor X must have taught Havok effective psionic defenses. Havoks upset that they would try such a thing. He brings up the fact that he was an X-Man before any of them and that they had no right to hide secrets from him. Storm tells him it was for his own protection. Betsy thinks he knows too much. She doesn't want to try another mindwipe and she also doesn't want to let him go where the Marauders can get to him. Storm asks her what their other options are. Betsy tells her there's only one, kill him. Havok's a bit scared by Betsy's words, mostly because Storm actually thinks about it. However, Storm tells her it's not the X-Men's way. Then they fill Havok in on all the events that have happened since the Morlock Massacre. As the horrible stories unfold, Havok comes to a realization: he must do something, lest the world become a horrible place. He reaches out his hand and asks Storm if he can be part of the team. Storm, in turn, looks towards Magneto turning the decision over to him. Magneto tells Havok that the war of mutant against mutant has begun and warns him there will be casualties ahead. He then takes Alex's hand. Back in New Mexico, the three Marauders have been defeated. Hovering above the ground is a nude Lorna Dane. She mocks her opponents and calls them pathetic. Arclight wants to know what she's going to do with them. Lorna replies, "Lead you, of course! As Mr. Sinister always intended." Sabretooth finally realizes what happened. He notices the skull-choker around Lorna's neck. Malice has possessed her. She tells him he's right and that she did it at the airport when Alex left. She tells them that the fight was a test to see if she could handle Lorna's body. Not only did she pass the test, but she also loves Lorna's psyche. She continues, saying that under Sinister's teachings, she will become the Monarch of the Marauders! Popular Mechanics Follow View Profile The Strange Origin of the Hollow Moon Conspiracy Theory Story by Jessica Coulon • 3h ago 17 Comments | 23 The hollow moon conspiracy theory came about during the Apollo missions in 1969. Conspiracy theorists misinterpreted the results of the astronauts’ seismic experiments, leading them to believe the moon was hollow. Scientists said the moon rings “like a bell.” That’s because the vibrations from the moon’s seismic events, known as moonquakes, last much longer than those on Earth. Conspiracy theorists once believed that the moon was hollow. Though that’s more likely than the moon being made out of cheese, it still seems pretty ridiculous by today’s standards. So where did that hollow moon theory—or rather, conspiracy—come from? Surprisingly, it isn’t based in folklore, and the tale isn’t very old, either. The hollow moon theory first came about in 1969 during the Apollo 12 moon-landing mission. 🌘 Science explains the world around us. We’ll help you make sense of it all—join Pop Mech Pro. NASA researchers sought to learn more about the composition of the moon. During the Apollo 12 mission, astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean set up a Passive Seismic Experiment (PSE) at the landing site as part of larger set of moon experiments known as the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP). Once the Apollo 12 astronauts were safely back in the command module, they crashed the lunar module into the moon’s surface. The impact was the equivalent of detonating one ton of TNT and triggered what’s known as a “moonquake”—the first human-made moonquake to take place. The PSE seismometers recorded the resulting vibrations, which were much bigger and lasted much longer than the scientists had anticipated. They were far different from the earthquake vibrations we’re familiar with. An Apollo 12 astronaut sets up the Passive Seismic Experiment on the moon, 1969. An Apollo 12 astronaut sets up the Passive Seismic Experiment on the moon, 1969. © Bettmann - Getty Images NASA continued its moonquake experiments during the Apollo 13, 14, 15, and 16 missions, with similar results. At the time, the findings were surprising because they pointed to the moon being much less dense than Earth, and it is: the moon is only 60 percent as dense. That doesn’t mean the moon is hollow, but as with many things—like the moon landing itself—conspiracy theorists perpetuated that misinformation. Related video Pause Ad - Up Next "The Last Thing: The blood moon eclipse" MSNBC The Last Thing: The blood moon eclipse What Are Moonquakes? The Passive Seismic Experiment seismometers placed during the Apollo 12 mission remained active until 1977, recording both natural and human-made moonquakes alike. In fact, moonquakes happen fairly regularly, as space debris like asteroids hit the moon more frequently than Earth, because the moon’s atmosphere is much less dense. Scientists have pinpointed four types of moonquakes: deep sub-700-kilometer quakes, meteorite-caused quakes, thermal quakes, and shallow quakes occurring only 20 kilometers to 30 kilometers deep. Shallow moonquakes, like those triggered by NASA, last the longest and have the most devastating effects—some even measured up to 5.5 on the Richter scale. Shallow moonquakes do occur naturally on the moon, too, though scientists haven’t pinpointed what causes them yet. Why Does the Moon “Ring” Like a Bell? Here’s where things got lost in translation. “The moon was ringing like a bell,” Clive R. Neal, professor of civil engineering and geological sciences at the University of Notre Dame, says of the experiment results in a NASA writeup. And that’s true from a scientific standpoint. Similarly, the writeup also compares moonquake vibrations to those of a tuning fork, which is a kind of acoustic resonator. “It just keeps going and going,” Neal says. However, the moon does not literally sound like a bell ringing, nor is it hollow like one. But conspiracy theorists interpreted it in that manner. A close-up of the Apollo 12 Passive Seismic Experiment. A close-up of the Apollo 12 Passive Seismic Experiment. © NASA On Earth, vibrations from earthquakes typically last only 30 seconds or so and no more than two minutes. That’s largely due to the amount of water present on the planet. As Neal explains, “Water weakens stone, expanding the structure of different minerals. When energy propagates across such a compressible structure, it acts like a foam sponge—it deadens the vibrations.” Greta Thunberg Drives This Car At The Age Of 19 Ad investing.com Greta Thunberg Drives This Car At The Age Of 19 Meanwhile, the NASA-induced moonquakes all lasted over ten minutes. The Apollo 12 moonquake’s shockwave took close to eight minutes to peak after impact and around an hour to fully cease. But we now know there’s a very good, scientific explanation for it. There isn’t much water on the moon that we know of—it’s mostly in the form of ice; and the moon is drier and a lot more rigid than Earth. So, the moon’s composition allows vibrations to “ring” and continue on for a much longer period of time. The results were surprising at the time of the Apollo missions, but we now know more about the moon’s composition. Though we’ve ruled out the moon being hollow, we have a lot to learn still. Terry Hurford, a NASA geophysicist, is working on the new Subsurface Lunar Investigation and Monitoring Experiment (SUBLIME), which would “map the moon’s core” and gather even more data on moonquakes for the Artemis program, for instance. “Our understanding of the moon’s interior remains rudimentary and is limited,” he says in a NASA article.

ScienceAlert Follow View Profile An AI Found an Unknown 'Ghost' Ancestor in The Human Genome Story by Peter Dockrill • 11h ago Comments | 1 Nobody knows who she was, just that she was different: A teenage girl from over 50,000 years ago of such odd uniqueness she appeared to be a 'hybrid' ancestor to modern humans that scientists hadn't seen before. An entrance to a cave in Siberia. An entrance to a cave in Siberia. © Provided by ScienceAlert Only recently, researchers have uncovered evidence she wasn't alone. In a 2019 study analyzing the tangled mess of humanity's prehistory, scientists used artificial intelligence (AI) to identify an unknown human ancestor species that modern humans encountered – and shared dalliances with – on the long trek out of Africa millennia ago. Greta Thunberg Drives This Car At The Age Of 19 Ad investing.com Greta Thunberg Drives This Car At The Age Of 19 "About 80,000 years ago, the so-called Out of Africa occurred, when part of the human population, which already consisted of modern humans, abandoned the African continent and migrated to other continents, giving rise to all the current populations," explained evolutionary biologist Jaume Bertranpetit from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain. As modern humans forged this path into the landmass of Eurasia, they forged some other things too – breeding with ancient and extinct hominids from other species. Up until recently, these occasional sexual partners were thought to include Neanderthals and Denisovans, the latter of which were unknown until 2010. But in this study, a third ex from long ago was isolated in Eurasian DNA, thanks to deep learning algorithms sifting through a complex mass of ancient and modern human genetic code. Using a statistical technique called Bayesian inference, the researchers found evidence of what they call a "third introgression" – a 'ghost' archaic population that modern humans interbred with during the African exodus. "This population is either related to the Neanderthal-Denisova clade or diverged early from the Denisova lineage," the researchers wrote in their paper, meaning that it's possible this third population in humanity's sexual history was possibly a mix themselves of Neanderthals and Denisovans. In a sense, from the vantage point of deep learning, it's a hypothetical corroboration of sorts of the teenage girl 'hybrid fossil' identified in 2018; although there's still more work to be done, and the research projects themselves aren't directly linked. "Our theory coincides with the hybrid specimen discovered recently in Denisova, although as yet we cannot rule out other possibilities," one of the team, genomicist Mayukh Mondal from the University of Tartu in Estonia, said in a press statement at the time of discovery. That being said, the discoveries being made in this area of science are coming thick and fast. Also in 2018, another team of researchers identified evidence of what they called a "definite third interbreeding event" alongside Denisovans and Neanderthals, and a pair of papers published in early 2019 traced the timeline of how those extinct species intersected and interbred in clearer detail than ever before. There's a lot more research to be done here yet. Applying this kind of AI analysis is a decidedly new technique in the field of human ancestry, and the known fossil evidence we're dealing with is amazingly scant. But according to the research, what the team has found explains not only a long-forgotten process of introgression – it's a dalliance that, in its own way, informs part of who we are today. "We thought we'd try to find these places of high divergence in the genome, see which are Neanderthal and which are Denisovan, and then see whether these explain the whole picture," Bertranpetit told Smithsonian. "As it happens, if you subtract the Neanderthal and Denisovan parts, there is still something in the genome that is highly divergent." The findings were published in Nature Communications. A version of this article was originally published in February 2019.

Amber Heard Calls Out Instagram’s Double Standard On Nudity Guidelines By Posting Photo Of Jason Momoa By BRENT FURDYK. Photo: Maria Laura Antonelli/AGF/Shutterstock Last month, Amber Heard posted a photo on Instagram — taken for a magazine shoot — in which she stood in front of a mirror wearing a black suit jacket atop her bare torso, with the nipple of one of her breasts visible. Her followers predicted the photo would be deleted due to the social media platform’s stringent nudity guidelines — and sure enough, it was. On Saturday, the 33-year-old actress challenged the double standard by reposting the photo — albeit a doctored version, in which her face and torso had been replaced that that of her “Aquaman” co-star Jason Momoa. Michael Rosenbaum Talks BACK IN THE DAY, How Directing SMALLVILLE Episode Prepared Him, Writing for a Budget, and More BY CHRISTINA RADISH PUBLISHED JAN 19, 2014 Michael Rosenbaum Talks BACK IN THE DAY, How Directing SMALLVILLE Episode Prepared Him, and Writing for a Budget. BACK IN THE DAY is now in theaters. Back in the Day michael rosenbaum From writer/director Michael Rosenbaum, Back in the Day is a raunchy comedy with heart that tells the story of Jim Owens (Rosenbaum), an aspiring actor in Hollywood who decides to go back home to Indiana for his high school reunion. Reliving the glory days with his now-married friends, he encounters an old flame (Morena Baccarin) and wonders what could have been, had he chosen a different path in life. At the film’s press day, actor/filmmaker Michael Rosenbaum spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about what started him down the road for this film, how directing an episode of Smallville was a great trial run, having to write for your budget, how he got this great cast together, how much improvisation they did, keeping track of his own performance while he was directing, changing the ending, editing the film down from a two hours and 20 minute assembly cut, and what he’d like to do next. Check out what he had to say after the jump. Close Collider: What started you down the road on this? MICHAEL ROSENBAUM: I was on Smallville and I had a lot of free time on my hands, sitting around on the set, and my friend was like, “You need to write.” Carrie Fisher, who’s a friend of mine, said, “Just write stuff. You’re always telling me these crazy stories, so write it!” So, I wrote a whole bunch of short stories about growing up, and then I gave it to her. She said, “Did this really happen to you?,” and I was like, “Yeah.” She said, “You need to write this. This should be a movie or a TV show. This is really funny.” I was like, “What?! You wrote Postcards from the Edge. You’re a genius!” So then, I started writing and I got to sell a few things. None of them got made, but I sold them. You’ve always gotta look at the little things, and the accomplishments in life. While I was at Smallville, I was like, “Why don’t I take the opportunity to direct an episode?” So, they let me direct an episode, and I was like, “Oh, my god, I love this!” And then, I directed a short, produced another short, and wrote this and that. Then, I decided that I was going to direct a movie. I’ve seen a lot of people do it who can’t, and I’ve seen a lot of people who really can, so I decided to give it a shot. And then, you realize, “Wow, I have no money,” and you have to raise money, which takes forever. Then, you lose money. Then, someone else comes back. Somehow you get a movie made, which is a miracle, on its own. And then, you have to cast it and finish it. This was one of the first scripts I had written. It was loosely based on a lot of stories that happened when I was growing up. Did directing an episode of Smallville really help you with directing a movie? ROSENBAUM: Yeah, it helped. But, you’ve gotta remember that Smallville had millions of dollars in the budget, an infrastructure, a special effects department, a stunt department, a make-up department, and a hair department. Everybody was already doing their job. You don’t have to direct anyone. You just get the performances. But, I felt that I really got great performances, and I thought, “Okay, I can do this.” We had nobody. We just had one person doing make-up and hair. A lot of times, people think directing is how you can move a camera and how you can make big explosions. That’s not directing. I haven’t directed a lot. This is my first movie. But, directing is more about telling a story. You have a script and you tell the story, the easiest way possible. The best direction I got was from Jason Reitman and James Gunn. They’re big directors and they said, “Tell the story. Transition to the next scene. Get performances. Get a variety of performances, so that you have something to cut, if you don’t like it.” To me, it’s really about performance and telling the story. I’m an actor, so it’s easier for me to talk to actors. I felt like I could get what I wanted out of them. That was the biggest thing I had going for me. I knew that the characters were going to be good and that they were going to be believable, I just didn’t know how the movie was going to turn out. But, I was very happy. You’ve just gotta keep it simple. There are movies where you need to do big things, and they’re called action movies. But for a comedy, you’ve just gotta tell the story. When you wrote this, did you know you’d also be directing it? Did you think about that while you were writing it, at all? ROSENBAUM: You just have to know your budget. You have to go, “Okay, I want to do a stunt scene driving.” I wrote this scene where a truck jumps off into the cornfield and busts through a billboard that’s my face with a big thumbs up, but I couldn’t afford that. We had six hours to shoot a stunt scene. I was a little over-ambitious. I wanted to do so much, but I love what I have. We had 20 days to shoot the movie and a million bucks. That’s it. We shot in the middle of nowhere with no tax credit and no overtime. To do what we did was simply amazing. I can’t believe we did as much as we did. We shot driving scenes, stunt scenes, a wedding, a reunion with 12 actors and at least eight days of it, a wiffle ball scene and a BBQ. There were a lot of big group scenes, and that’s very difficult. I knew that we could do it. I just hoped that weather permitted and that Lady Luck was on our side. How did you get this great cast together? ROSENBAUM: I got lucky with this cast. I was a first-time director, and it was pilot season. I had no idea how I was going to get people out to the middle of nowhere, where I grew up, to shoot this movie. But somehow, I did. We didn’t have enough money to get through the days, but we did it. Then, we were finished and we were in the editing room, and I was like, “Wait, there’s some funny stuff here, and this actually looks like a real movie.” The one thing I didn’t want to do was make an arthouse movie. I love them, but I didn’t want this to just show at a small theater. I wanted people to go, “This looks like it could be a studio movie.” And I give that credit to my D.P., Bradley Stonesifer. It looks great. And we’ve got a great soundtrack. Call it luck, or whatever, but I am lucky. Did you have these particular actors in mind? ROSENBAUM: Yeah. Harland Williams was always Skunk. It’s based on a real character, who I grew up with. Skunk was such a great guy, and Harland nails that character. Nick’s character is based on a guy who used to ump our wiffle ball games. He’s a big drinker with a heart of gold. They were all loosely based on different people, for the most part. So, I knew Nick would play Freeman, I knew Harland would play Skunk, and I knew [Jay R.] Ferguson would play the fiancé. I was blessed, but I was lucky that they all did it. It seems like a movie like this would have a lot of improvisation, but when you’re on such a tight schedule with such a tight budget, can you even allow for that? ROSENBAUM: I had to. It would be a disservice to not let these gifts in the improvisational world not to improvise. As little time as we had, I always said, “Take one, say it how it’s written. Once we get that, let’s play with it.” And I’m acting in those scenes, too. You take your time for things that are really important, and those things that aren’t as important, you just go, “Hey, that’s enough. Let’s move on.” Did you find it hard to keep track of your own performance while you were directing? ROSENBAUM: Yeah! I thought I was going to be so stressed about knowing my lines because I wrote it and it’s embarrassing, if I don’t know my lines. But, I was at ease because I was so worried about everything else that I forgot. I just became myself. But, I had eyes on the camera. I was just say to my first assistant director, “Hey, are we good?” Every once in awhile, she’d say, “You could use a little more energy.” And I trusted her because she’s done 30 movies. I just shot as much footage as I could. I knew that the key was to shoot as much footage as I could, keep rolling and get the moments. I wanted people to connect, and I also wanted people to laugh. The jokes had to be there, and the relationships had to be there. Was this always the ending you had written for this? ROSENBAUM: No. The scene at the end wasn’t supposed to be there. I wrote it at the end. I was like, “You’ve gotta have a little bit of a happy ending, and some morsel of hope that maybe things work out.” This is a comedy. This is light and fun. This is a date movie, where you’re going to laugh and enjoy yourself. You don’t need to feel sorry for anybody. I didn’t want it to be too cliche. It’s just a real story. How challenging was it to put together a final cut? ROSENBAUM: It was easy, but there was a lot of great stuff that got cut. Richard Marx was a gift from god. He was hilarious in the movie, but I ended up cutting him out. It was not because of his performance, but it didn’t work. He was nice enough that he gave us a song. He’s become one of my best friends. He’s like my big brother. But my editor said, “I’ve never been with a writer/director that cuts as easily as you do, ever. You can cut stuff like you don’t care if it’s you.” I was like, “If it’s not funny, it’s not making the movie. If I don’t believe it, it’s not making the movie.” This is a comedy. People don’t want to go so a two hour and 20 minute comedy, although some directors do that. I wanted to make an hour and a half movie, where you’re in and out and you laugh your ass off. We have outtakes at the end. That was important. I didn’t want the movie to drag. There were some dance scenes at the reunion and some bachelor party stuff. I cut a lot of Harland Williams stuff. I had to just cut stuff that was really funny, to get out of the scene. When they gave me the assembly cut, it was two hours and 20 minutes, and I said, “What the fuck?!” I remember chopping it down to two hours, and then to one hour and 50 minutes, and then to one hour and 40 minutes, but that still wasn’t enough. I even think I still could have cut another four or five minutes, but it moves and it’s fun. When you throw so much of yourself into a project like this, do you then just want to go do an acting project and leave the rest to someone else? michael rosenbaum morena baccarin back in the day ROSENBAUM: I’ve gotta say, as much as that sounds so easy, and it’s fun sometimes to be the actor and go home and not worry about anything but your lines, I loved coming to work every day and seeing this whole crew that looked at me like, “What are we doing today? It’s your call.” I like to direct. I like to engage with people, and I want people to have fun. I’m a people person, and I feel like I could be a good leader. I think being a good leader is knowing what you want, having professional people around you, who are fun to work with, and know your taste and what you want. That makes it easier. A lot of these big directors work with the same people, for years on end. Do you see yourself directing scripts that you haven’t written? ROSENBAUM: Sure. I’d love to direct my own stuff, but a lot of my stuff isn’t as good as most people’s stuff. I don’t think I’m the world’s most gifted writer. I think I have great ideas and great characters. Sometimes I think I write really well, but sometimes I don’t. If a script comes to me that’s great, I’m game. If I can get the rights to it, I’m gonna direct it. But, I like to put my own twist on it. I like if they can give me the freedom to add things to it and take things away. I always want that freedom. I want to improvise. If it’s not working, I want to have the freedom to not have to call the writer and say, “Do you care if we change your words?” I’m not going to be that director. You’ve always gotta respect the writer, but if you write and direct your own stuff, you can change it. Do you know what you’re going to direct next? ROSENBAUM: I’m gearing up to hopefully direct my next movie in the summer. I can’t really tell you anything about that right now ‘cause everyone steals in this business. But, it will have a bigger budget with more days off. It’s a very funny romantic comedy. There’s also a camp movie that I wrote, and another movie that I won’t talk about. I’m really narrowing it down, revising both and seeing what’s best. But, I’m up for anything. One of my favorite movies is Tommy Boy, but then I love The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I like to make people a little uncomfortable, and then say, “It’s okay. These things happen.” There’s just some kind of awkwardness that I want to convey, so hopefully I’ll be able to do that, in the future. Back in the Day is now playing in theaters and on VOD.

Savanna Samson: Confessions of a Porn Star-Turned-Mom Adult film star worries about career's impact on young son. ByALICE GOMSTYN April 27, 2012, 10:22 AM Share 6:12 True Confessions: Porn Star-Turned-Mom Part 1: Meet Natalie Oliveros, a mom with a porn star alter ego: Savanna Samson. April 27, 2012 — -- Natalie Oliveros is a New York City working mom devoted to her young son. She cooks breakfast for 10-year-old Luchino, takes him to school every morning and even cuts his hair. "My life means nothing without, without him," Oliveros, 44, told "20/20" co-anchor Chris Cuomo. She added that she believed that "everything that I've done in my life, all the choices I've made, will one day benefit him instead of being a shameful thing for him." What could young Luchino possibly find shameful? Meet Savanna Samson, Oliveros' alter ego. Samson is an adult film star -- and a very successful one at that. Her Adult Video News awards for group sex and best all-girl sex stand prominently displayed in her home. "I'm a porn star, yes ... and I don't mind that title. ... It's given me a life of luxury and success," she said. "I was, you know, born to do this. "I'm just an entertainer, and this is how I choose to entertain," she said. "And, morally speaking, that's what's confusing about me, is that I do have morals. And yet, it's contradictory, I guess, by the industry I'm in." Recent Stories from ABC News Oliveros came to New York City from upstate New York at the age of 17 intending to pursue ballet. She did end up dancing professionally, but not in ballet slippers: She worked at the famous strip club, Scores. She met her future husband -- Luchino's father, from whom she's now legally separated -- at the club. It was he, Oliveros said, who suggested she try doing a pornography film as a wedding gift to him. Oliveros said that she was both appalled and intrigued by the idea. "I figured, I can make this one and only movie, and no one will ever hear about it," she said. But once in front of the camera, Oliveros said, she caught "porn fever." "I [had] the bug, you know, can't wait to do it again," she said. Over the last decade, she's starred in more than 80 films. But there is the uncomfortable potential of her job interfering with her parenting. She worries about what Luchino may find about her online. "I've been trying to knock down all the smut and all the nudity when you Google me that comes up. It's not just about me but it's about Luchino and his friends," she said. "I still would be devastated if he saw this stuff on the Internet." She said she wouldn't want him to pursue a career in pornography; the business, she said, is tough on men. Recently, Oliveros has tried to talk to Luchino about her profession, but the boy -- perhaps knowing more than he lets on -- has stopped the conversation in its tracks. Recent Stories from ABC News "I love you a ton!" he declared when Oliveros tried raising the subject in front of "20/20's" cameras. Oliveros doesn't plan to be a porn star forever. "I have to go forth as a business woman and not use my body to get what I want," she said. "That's always a challenge for me," she added, laughing. Several years ago, Oliveros partnered with a vintner in Tuscanny to start her own wine label, Savanna Samson. Recent Stories from ABC News "A lot of times, when I first launched with this Savanna line, it was like, 'Haha, right, you know: Porn star wine give me a break,'" she remembered. But Oliveros' venture was instantly validated after wine guru Robert Parker gave her Sogno Uno an outstanding rating. "Suddenly, with the rating, 91 rating from Robert Parker, it was like, wait a second ... don't knock it 'til you try it," she said. Oliveros was proud that her parents finally had something they could tell their friends about. And she was excited for her son, too. "Hopefully, he'll have an interest and want to carry on the business," she said.
