Brigitte Bardot, the French actor and singer, has died aged 91.
Bardot shot to fame with the 1956 film, And God Created Woman, written and directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim. She is known for her roles in Viva Maria (1965) and Contempt (1963).
In the early 1970s she retired from acting aged 39, swapping the big screen for political activism, in particular animal rights.
She later vocally supported the far-right Front National in France and expressed racist views towards ethnic minorities, which she was convicted for.

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation confirmed her death and said in a statement: “The foundation announces with immense sadness the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation.”

President Emmanuel Macron also paid tribute to the star. He said the actor was a “legend” who “embodied a life of freedom”.
Macron posted on X: “Her films, her voice, her dazzling fame, her initials, her sorrows, her generous passion for animals, her face that became Marianne, Brigitte Bardot embodied a life of freedom.
“A French existence, a universal radiance. She touched us. We mourn a legend of the century.”

Bardot was born in Paris in 1934 and grew up in a wealthy Catholic family. A talented dancer, she was awarded a place at the prestigious school Conservatoire de Paris.
While training at the music and dance school, she worked as a model. Bardot was the fashion magazine Elle’s cover star in 1950 when she was just 15 years old.
Her modelling work led to film auditions. She met her first husband Roger Vadim at one audition, and she was cast in small roles.

It wasn’t until she starred in And God Created Woman that she was propelled to fame. The French film was a hit with local and international audiences, and launched Bardot’s career as a “sex symbol” in the 1960s.
Bardot played the character Juliette Hardy a free-spirited teenager in Saint-Tropez, south of France.

She went on to star in successful French films such as the Oscar-nominated The Truth, A Very Private Affair and Contempt, as well as being cast in Hollywood blockbusters such as Viva Maria!.
Her influence extended beyond the cinema, reaching intellectual and cultural circles. Philosopher and feminist writer Simone de Beauvoir wrote an essay titled Brigitte Bardot and the Lolita Syndrome in 1959 which argued she created a new vision of femininity, and John Lennon asked his girlfriend-then-wife Cynthia Powell to dye her hair blonde to look more like Bardot.

She also recorded the song “Je T’Aime … Moi Non Plus” with Serge Gainsbourg during their affair. Fearing more drama after her current husband Gunter Sachs found out, she requested the song not be released.
Growing weary of the intense pressure from fame, Bardot gave up acting for good in 1973 to focus on animal rights. She made 45 films and 70 songs throughout her career.

She told The Guardian in 1996: “The madness which surrounded me always seemed unreal. I was never really prepared for the life of a star.”
Bardot campaigned on a range of worldwide issues, including seal hunting in Canada, dolphin killing in the Faroe Islands, and dog extermination in Romania. She set up her own animal foundation in 1986.

She was a long time supporter of the far-right Front National, which is now called the National Rally.
Bardot was fined six times for inciting racial hatred, particularly against immigrants and Muslims, and residents of the French overseas territory of Réunion, whom she called “savages”.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
