Martin Scorsese was born in Flushing, New York, on 17th November 1942. He was raised by Italian-American parents – Charles and Catherine as a devoted Catholic. His childhood was deprived of games and sports as he suffered from severe asthma and his only source of amusement was watching television or watching theatres. He used to spend most of his time doing so. He had a good knowledge about storyboards at quite a young age and drew one when he was eight years old. He pursued higher studies from New York University upon receiving a scholarship of $500 for making a ten minutes short film on the genre of comedy.
Martin Scorsese is an eminent American producer, director, and screenwriter and film historian. Martin Scorsese directed ‘Mean Streets’ (1973) in the streets of New York and gained a decent amount of fortune from this feature film which he invested in his next project ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), the movie that garnered a cult following in the years that followed and employed a different plot where the protagonist, an insomniac decides to take over the job of a taxi driver and gradually becomes adamant to clear the dirt of the society, eventually becoming a saviour for a fourteen-year-old prostitute. The movie was a hit at the box office on release and got nominated in various categories at the Oscars. It also won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
He went on to direct a host of other movies in the 80s and 90s that included Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), After Hours (1985), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995). He directed the crime film ‘Goodfellas’ in 1990 that was based on the life story of Henry Hill, a former gangster. It was a box office hit but failed to create its charm in the Oscars.
His collaboration with actor Leonardo DiCaprio proved to be most successful as they worked on “Gangs of New York” in 2002, and later again when in 2006 they embarked together on a journey to realize “The Departed.”  Martin Scorsese earned his much-deserved Oscar with “The Departed’ for Best Director. The film also went on to win Best Picture that year.

Martin Scorsese is also the director of ‘Shutter Island’ (2010) which is a psychological thriller with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role. He directed ‘Hugo’ in the year 2011 that was an adventure film and a historical epic that was commercially successful. He also co-produced ‘Hugo’.
In 2013, Martin Scorsese directed ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, a black comedy that minted $392 million worldwide and became a favorite of the audience. It also proved to be Scorsese’s most successful film commercially and attracted five nominations at the 86th Academy Awards ceremony.
