Superman is one of the most iconic superheroes that exists. Quite literally everyone has heard of this famous crime fighter. Even people who aren’t fans of the genre can still recognize, and often enjoy a Superman movie. The character was invented all the way back in 1933, and made his first comic book appearance in 1938. He made his first movie appearance in 1951, but this was largely considered a trial run for the upcoming TV series. It wasn’t until 1978 that a big budget producer partnered with Steven Spielberg to make the first true Superman movie. The rest as they say, is history!
Watching the Superman movies in order is important to understanding the story line. The original movies filmed in the 70s and 80s are part of their own series and should be watched from the beginning. If you’re just interested in checking out the later films made in the 2000s, it’s not important to have watched any of the earlier ones. The series reboots in 2006 with Superman Returns. However, if you really want to get into this series, start with the 1978 release, and work your way up in chronological order by release date. You can even get into the animated series to really get a maximum understanding of the stories and characters.
If you had to pick a single American superhero, Superman would be it. Since the 1940s this character has dominated popular culture with TV shows, short films, animated movies, video games and more. Starting in 1941, and beginning an epic journey, the animated cartoon series would go on to produce 17 episodes. Over 60 years later, VH1 would rate Superman the #2 pop culture icon, and Empire magazine would rate him the greatest comic book character of all time. He’s also been featured in numerous video games including releases for Atari, N64, and more.
