The “Suits” actress beat the likes of Marion Cotillard and Alicia Vikander to become Google’s most-searched actress of 2016. She has been in the spotlight since October 2016, when news of her relationship with Prince Harry surfaced.
Meghan is her middle name. She shares her first name with her character Rachel Zane from “Suits.”

She was born in Los Angeles County, California, U.S., on Aug. 4, 1981. Her mother Dora is a yoga instructor and father Thomas W. Markle is an Emmy Award-winning director of photography.
As a child, she accompanied her father on the sets of the show “Married with Children.” She feels her appreciation and fascination for food have come from her time spent on the set. She said in an interview with Best Health magazine: “After being there every day after school for 10 years and seeing the appreciation of food, I started to learn the association between food and happiness and being able to entertain — I think that’s where the seed was planted.”
At 11, Markle wrote a letter to the then U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton and other high-profile personalities against a soap advertisement for implying that women only belonged in the kitchen. The manufacturer had to alter their content after her complaint.
She graduated from Northwestern University with a double major in Theater and International Relations in 2003. She later worked at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
To pay bills in her early days of acting, Markle took up freelance calligraphy jobs for which she wrote some of Dolce & Gabbana’s celebrity correspondence and restaurant invitations.
"I used to be a calligrapher for weddings and events – that was my side job while I was auditioning," she shared in an interview with Good Housekeeping, adding "I think handwritten notes are a lost art form. When I booked my first [TV] pilot, my dad wrote me a letter that I still have. The idea of someone taking the time to put pen to paper is really special."
The actress has featured in movies such as “Get Him to the Greek” (2010), “Remember Me” (2010), “Horrible Bosses” (2011) and "When Sparks Fly" (2014).

Markle is an advocate for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In 2016, she also became the Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada.
She was a counselor for the international charity One Young World. At one of their events, she said: “Across the board, a lot of the decision makers are men. We need men to stand up and empower women. At the end of the day, I think what scares people is the idea that female empowerment is threatening. No, it’s not. You empower the women, you’re empowering the community.”
Markle has a weakness for French fries and pasta and her talents include cooking. Her go-to British dish is roast chicken, which she likes bringing to dinner parties.
In an interview with Best Health magazine, she said: “I love carbs — who doesn’t love a carbohydrate? But of course, when I’m filming, I’m conscious of what I eat. I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends.”
A fitness freak, Markle plans to run a marathon in the future. She told Best Health: “As I’ve gotten older, running has become hard on my knees, so I can’t run outside the way I used to, but I’m still planning to run a marathon!”
The tech-savvy actress is the founder of thetig.com, which is “a hub for the discerning palate — those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion & beauty,” according to the website’s official Facebook page. Markle is also very active on social media and has over a million followers on Instagram.
