In this relationship, the worshipper becomes a child and Kali assumes the form of the ever-caring mother. (From a Karpuradistotra hymn, translated from Sanskrit by Sir John Woodroffe) Who is Kali? Kali is the fearful and ferocious form of the mother goddess. She assumed the form of a powerful goddess and became popular with the composition of the Devi Mahatmya, a text of the 5th - 6th century AD. Here she is depicted as having born from the brow of Goddess Durga during one of her battles with the evil forces. As the legend goes, in the battle, Kali was so much involved in the killing spree that she got carried away and began destroying everything in sight. Her tongue protrudes from her mouth, her eyes are red, and her face and breasts are sullied with blood. She stands with one foot on the thigh, and another on the chest of her husband, Shiva. Awesome Symbols Kali's fierce form is strewed with awesome symbols. Her black complexion symbolizes her all-embracing and transcendental nature. Says the Mahanirvana Tantra: "Just as all colors disappear in black, so all names and forms disappear in her". Her nudity is primeval, fundamental, and transparent like Nature — the earth, sea, and sky. Kali is free from the illusory covering, for she is beyond all maya or "false consciousness." Kali's garland of fifty human heads that stands for the fifty letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, symbolizes infinite knowledge. Her girdle of severed human hands signifies work and liberation from the cycle of karma. Her white teeth show her inner purity, and her red lolling tongue indicates her omnivorous nature — "her indiscriminate enjoyment of all the world's 'flavors'." Her sword is the destroyer of false consciousness and the eight bonds that bind us. Her three eyes represent past, present, and future, — the three modes of time — an attribute that lies in the very name Kali ('Kala' in Sanskrit means time). The eminent translator of Tantrik texts, Sir John Woodroffe in Garland of Letters, writes, "Kali is so called because She devours Kala (Time) and then resumes Her own dark formlessness." Kali's proximity to cremation grounds where the five elements or "Pancha Mahabhuta" come together and all worldly attachments are absolved, again point to the cycle of birth and death. The reclined Shiva lying prostrate under the feet of Kali suggests that without the power of Kali (Shakti), Shiva is inert. Forms, Temples, and Devotees Kali's guises and names are diverse. Shyama, Adya Ma, Tara Ma, and Dakshina Kalika, Chamundi are popular forms. Then there is Bhadra Kali, who is gentle, Shyamashana Kali, who lives only in the cremation ground, and so on. The most notable Kali temples are in Eastern India — Dakshineshwar and Kalighat in Kolkata (Calcutta) and Kamakhya in Assam, a seat of tantric practices. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Vamakhyapa, and Ramprasad are some of the legendary devotees of Kali. Anna wanted to conquer the Venetians by teaching the ladies the secrets of makeup and the Byzantine dances. Mia Goth has been quietly amassing one of the most exciting filmographies out there for the last 10 years. Until now, that is. She’s delivered standout supporting performances in films like The Survivalist, A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria, and more, but Ti West is the first to fully embrace the powerhouse she is and send her star soaring in a big way by releasing not one but two features in a single calendar year with Goth as the headliner, X back in March and now the prequel film, Pearl. ✕ Remove Ads Even after having worked with some of the most iconic directors in the industry like Lars von Trier, Gore Verbinski, and Luca Guadagnino, it wasn’t until X that Goth finally got her first lead role in a feature film. One film quickly, or rather immediately, became two when inspiration struck and West got the OK from A24 to film not one, but two movies within the same series. First up would be X in which Goth starred as Maxine, a young woman with big dreams, and also as Pearl, an older woman struggling to cope with the fact that the opportunity to seize her own dreams is long gone. After filming that 1970s-set film, it was back to 1918 to create Pearl’s origin story. A young Pearl is desperate to become a star, but her current circumstances make it very difficult for her to go after what she wants most. While her husband (Alistair Sewell) is off fighting in the war, Pearl is stuck at home caring for her catatonic father (Matthew Sunderland) and doing chores around the farm to appease her extremely strict and stern mother (Tandi Wright) who has absolutely no time for Pearl’s ambitions. When asked if there’s anything about the production that now makes her especially grateful that specific project marked her very first feature film experience, Goth quickly and enthusiastically replied, “Entirely. Everything about that film.” She continued: “It feels divine almost, if I can say that. It created a blueprint for me in terms of the kind of material that I wanted to work on with the types of directors and that kind of caliber of cast. I was incredibly fortunate to have that as my first project. It really kind of set the field for me in terms of what it is I'm aspiring to do.” As for the specifics of what Goth was and still is aiming to achieve, it’s quite simple; it’s all about the characters. Here’s how she put it: “Stories that are exploring people. That's pretty much it. Not so much plot. Plot doesn't interest me all that much. That's the number one for me and then it goes to character and then to script and to story and everything else around that. But, for me, if you don't trust the director who's leading the ship, then nothing of any value I think is going to be made.” What is it that makes a director stand out to Goth? A willingness to have faith in the team that they assembled. “I actually think the best directors are all quite similar in their approach. I think the best directors aren't afraid to give up control. The best directors don't try to micromanage or control their actors or anyone on set. In some ways, the director's job is everything leading up to set. The director is the one bringing everyone together and picking costume designers and makeup artists and production designers and so on, and then trusting them to do their job. And if the director has faith in these people, I think that's where real magic can happen.” Ti West Making XImage via A24 ✕ Remove Ads While an actor can actively seek out directors they suspect have the particular set of skills they appreciate most in a leader on set, sometimes, especially in the midst of a high-pressure shoot, conflict can erupt. But for Goth, that’s not necessarily a negative thing. In fact, she thinks friction can enhance the art. Here’s how she put it: “Sometimes sets aren't necessarily ‘just positive.’ You know, sometimes there is a little bit of friction sometimes on sets and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think good ideas can come from that sometimes when you clash with somebody, maybe with a director's idea or approach. I mean, yes, you can try it and sometimes the director might be right, but other times it's good to voice your opinion and what you think the character would do in that instance and not just do what the director wants, you know? By the time you get to set you should have full ownership of your character.” Not only did Goth get to have full ownership over a character in X, but she got the opportunity to have full ownership over a lead character in that film, and then in Pearl as well. Given the performances I’d seen Goth deliver in earlier films, it truly came as a shock to learn that X marked her very first lead role in a feature film. Surely there had to be a project I missed along the way, right? But, no. X’s Maxine did in fact mark Goth’s first experience being number one on the call sheet. My own reaction to that? It’s about time! During our conversation, Goth confirmed it felt that way to her as well and also added: “It was just nice to finally have the opportunity to really dive into a character to that depth. Here’s what she went with: “I just think the scale with which he's envisioning all of these worlds, that's really quite unparalleled. The fact that he can go from this 1970s Americana to independent cinema type of movie and then jump 50 or so years back to 1918 and create this entirely different world, but equally as — it just sucks you in, you know? It’s what the moviegoing experience should be about, but rarely is. Grand, glorious and fast on its feet, this “Dragon” deserves to be seen on the biggest possible IMAX screen. It’s a rousing family-friendly triumph. In its latest incarnation, the familiar fairy tale of the war between Vikings and fire-breathing dragons swoops, sweeps and swirls in freewheeling ecstasy as dragons singly and in flocks pirouette majestically across the sky. The spectacle gives a lift to the spirit. The dragons — scaly, befanged fire-belching CG nightmares — are both formidable and funny. On the ground, characters, primarily the misfit Viking youth Hiccup and his fearsome village chieftain dad Stoick interact with tense but genuine intimacy and heartfelt connection. The picture has big themes, which are handled with delicacy and intelligence. Credit for this goes to screenwriter-director Dean DeBlois. He knows this material inside and out (it’s derived from the source novels written by Cressida Cowell) and obviously loves it. He wrote and directed the original 2010 animated “Dragon” movie and its two sequels. He also co-wrote and co-directed the original “Lilo & Stitch,” so the man clearly has skills at this sort of thing. Yet transposed to actual locations, dense real-life forests and craggy, storm-battered cliffs (many of the exteriors were filmed in Northern Ireland), the whole thing seems unexpectedly fresh. (Bill Pope is the director of photography and Dominic Watkins is the production designer.) It more than justifies the taking of the live-action re-creation route. Great care has been taken to give the picture a lived-in long ago and far away look, with elaborate beards, bulky fur capes and battered leather garments giving the players the look of authenticity. There are plot levels here that are deeper than the original, which is quite complex and moving in its own right. Hiccup, played this time by Mason Thames (Jay Baruchel voiced the character in all three animated versions), is a thoughtful kid who yearns for the approval of his dad and his contemporaries, but he’s not too coordinated and not too bloodthirsty. Scorned and mocked, he dreams of killing a dragon no one has ever seen, the fearsome Night Fury, and finally winning the respect of Vikingkind. It’s wounded. He has a tender heart and so gingerly befriends it, names it Toothless and then devises a contraption to allow it to fly again. And then he learns how to ride it, at which point the picture really takes off. Toothless, a CG creation, has soulfully expressive green eyes and innate playfulness. The developing relationship between kid and dragon is the most engaging element of the picture. Hiccup nurtures the friendship in secret because, well, dragons and Vikings are mortal enemies and have been throughout history. The kid is the despair of his father, played by Gerard Butler, who voiced the character in the animated versions. Butler’s work here is a revelation as he brings forth depths to the character not previously reached. Father and son genuinely love one another but are always at cross purposes, and their scenes together are fraught with angst and wistfulness. And though it might look like “Lord of the Rings” or “Game of Thrones,” the tone stays light enough for younger filmgoers. There are a few intense sequences, but none that takes it any further than the animated film did 15 years ago. “How to Train Your Dragon” does start a little slow, however, which is odd because it also begins with a fiery battle between the Vikings and the dragons on the Isle of Berk. There’s a lot of exposition and introduction that needs to happen before you can just give yourself over to the story. In this more multicultural version, the warriors on Berk have been recruited from tribes around the globe to try to defeat the dragons. Hiccup is a Viking nepo baby. As the chief's son, he sits in a place of privilege, but he’s also a general outcast in this world of ruthless warriors — skinny and weak, he just longs to be part of the action, not sharpening the weapons. Killing dragons is currency in this society, and his crush Astrid (Nico Parker) happens to be one of the most promising up-and-comers. His sole champion is Gobber (a delightful Nick Frost), the blacksmith and dragon slayer teacher, who convinces the chief to give the clever Hiccup a shot. And Parker gives Astrid a relatable depth — the best in the bunch who is outshone in an unequal fight. Kids deserve movies that are made on the biggest possible canvas. “How to Train Your Dragon” is one that's worth the trip to the theater. It might just spark some young imaginations, whether it’s to go back and read the books or dream up their own worlds.
