Probably the likeliest Oscar winner in 2018 is Gary Oldman, 59, for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. The title refers to a black period in 1940, when Hitler was winning World War II and Churchill defied the British establishment, whose eminent members thought the only and obvious smart move was to surrender. The film boasts a parade of top actors and a brilliant acting duel between Oldman and Australian star Ben Mendelsohn, 48, as Churchill's opponent-turned-ally King George VI (the role Colin Firth made famous in The King's Speech). Director Joe Wright says that Oldman and Mendelsohn remind him of two prizefighters vying for a title. But Oldman very nearly ran away from his own rendezvous with destiny in the role of a lifetime, as he said at a Washington, D.C., screening of the film and in an AARP interview. Why did you hesitate to accept the role of Churchill? Was it partly all the famous people who played him before? I turned it down. You're stepping into Richard Hardy's shoes, Albert Finney's shoes, Michael Gambon's. And, of course, the silhouette. You look at me, and I probably could have a good crack at Stan Laurel. Or other skinny, intense guys you've played to acclaim: Sid Vicious, Lee Harvey Oswald, Joe Orton, Dracula, and indelible characters in films that were blockbusters, Harry Potter and The Dark Knight. But 3 1/2 hours of makeup a day and a state-of-the-art fat suit by Oscar-magnet designer Kazuhiro Tsuji (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) make you look the big part you refused to do for so long. Every time my manager brought it up, I'd say, "I don't want to hear about it — my decision is final!" What changed your mind? It was what I call the surrender to Winston, which was almost a year of work. How did you avoid having your performance contaminated by prior Winstons? What I did was to push all of that aside and go to the source material, the [1940] newsreel footage. He’s often thought of as this grumpy curmudgeon born in a bad mood, with a whiskey and a cigar, and he shuffles in. And what I saw, what jumped out of this old, jittery black-and-white footage, was a man who was 65 but moved like a 20-year-old. He moved through space with a fixity of purpose. He had this cherubic face with sort of a naughty schoolboy grin, with a sparkle in his eye. I've had 30 years of life to pull from. I know what it's like to be up; I know what it's like to be down. Not that you consciously draw on the experience, but you just intuitively recognize things. You're drawing on things that are maybe not in your conscious mind. In the newsreels, what I was looking at was just the fortitude, the persistence of this dynamo. Because we weren't making a whole life — it was playing him over five weeks; it's a chance to show a character you hadn't seen before, with all the warmth and all the history. You can't equate him with anyone else except, in my mind, someone like Washington or Lincoln. You're playing a man who had a very strong sense of marketing himself, of branding before it was even a thing. He was this round, short man in his funny Victorian clothes with his homburg hat and cigar and such. What did Churchill mean to you personally? I was born in 1958, and of course Churchill was our hero — I guess our savior. The man who won the war. My mother’s 98, went through the blitz; my dad was in the Royal Navy at the battle of Okinawa. One feels a connection there. But I’m constantly amazed discovering things about Churchill. I was surprised to find when I read the script was just how close we came to losing. Eventually, we didn’t do a deal with Hitler. I could forgive perhaps the Americans for not knowing the history, but I thought it was interesting that in Britain a lot of the people also didn’t know any of the details of the story. That is something to take away from the film, to realize just how perilously close we came right down to the wire. Kristin Scott Thomas is amazing as Mrs. Churchill, Clementine, who cuts him down to size for his own good. What light does she cast on his character? It's taking the statue down from the — what do you call it? — the plinth, and then meeting them eye to eye. We get a glimpse of the man behind the icon. Would there have been one without the other? Clementine was certainly a driving force in her own right and was an enormous support to him and a sounding board. Churchill said, "I could not live without Champagne. In victory I deserve it; in defeat I need it.” On Oscar night I think you'll deserve it. Well, that’s very kind. I'm not being kind! Looking for someone to fill the supersuit; Silverstone hypnotized UBC President Samuel Tanner and later Tanner's nephew, comedian Les Vegas, to fill the role. The third Blackrock was created by Silverstone by using charged ions to animate the suit, eliminating the need for an unwitting pawn. Finally Silverstone assumed the mantle of Blackrock himself, using a powerful stone that could metabolize electromagnetic energy into energy to achieve flight, energy blasts and superhuman strength, and fought Superman and his cousin Supergirl. This rock, while a technological artifact, has the appearance of a polished gem that is black as coal. It was appropriately dubbed the "Blackrock". Blackrock II The next person to take the mantle of Blackrock would be Samuel Benjamin. He had been in jail for eight years after attempted murder and upon getting out he learned it wasn't easy living outside. He stayed at a cheap hotel and as he laid in bed, told someone in a nearby room to turn off their TV, but they didn't and he angrily got out of bed and knocked down their door. Upon entering the room, he saw a crazy old man in a chair with TVs all around him. He gave the man a TV dinner and he told him his name is Peter Silverstone and that he was once Blackrock, a villain who used a stone to gather energy from telecommunication signals and radio waves, and he had given Superman some of his better smackdowns back then. Sam realized whoever has the rock controlled its output and, realizing the old man didn't need it anymore, took it from him and beat him to death with it remarking that he reminded him of prison guard whom he'd told he wants to beat to death with a rock. Later, he attacks the Daily Planet, and is confronted by Superman who ends up subduing Blackrock with his heat vision. After Superman defeated him, he asked him "why?", to which Sam answered "Because you're Superman. Because you don't belong here." Afterwards, Superman threw the blackrock into the sun, believing the threat of the stone would be ended forever. Blackrock III The third person to receive the Blackrock was Lucia, a former drug-dealer who had been arrested thanks to Superman. She smuggled in a knife and killed her cellmate, causing her to go into solitary for a week, but when she got out and went to the warden's office, she was given the blackrock by Talia which she then used to cause havoc in the area. Superman and Supergirl showed up to stop her, and while Supergirl was dealing with civilians, Superman tried to stop her, but she used the rock's power to drain Superman of his own and used it against him and then decided to go after Supergirl, who ended up stopping her. Later on, she encounters Superman again while he was headed to Alaska to deal with Luthor. She seems to have Superman beaten, but then Superman thinks about everything he loves and realizes he can't lose and takes Lucia into a room in an old building where there are lead lined walls preventing electromagnetic energy from entering and powering the rock, causing her to lose all her power and the rock draws away from her, afraid she'll lose. Powers and Abilities The wielder of the Blackrock stone can seemingly draw power from many different sources and use the power drawn for different purposes, such as increasing physical strength and durability, as well as the ability to fire energy blasts from the stone. All Blackrock-wielders have shown a superhuman degree of strength and endurance, adding to the abilities of flight and energy projection. The original Blackrock, Peter Silverstone mainly used it to draw power from radio and telecommunication waves, allowing him to process information from TV and energy signals at old age. Samuel Benjamin used it to draw power from millions of sources and made himself tough enough to take a punch from Superman that shook the street they were on without any damage at all. The blasts he fired were also so powerful they could actually hurt Superman. The third wielder of the stone, Lucia, seemed very adroit with it and used it to actually draw power from Superman himself and fired energy blasts capable of piercing even at the molecular level.

Oscar and Lucinda Roger Ebert January 23, 1998 NOW STREAMING ON: Powered by JustWatch "In order that I exist," the narrator of "Oscar and Lucinda" tells us, "two gamblers, one obsessive, one compulsive, must declare themselves." The gamblers are his grandparents, two 19th century eccentrics, driven by faith and temptation, who find they are freed to practice the first by indulging in the second. Their lives form a love story of enchantment and wicked wit. When we say two people were born for each other, that sometimes means their lives would have been impossible with anyone else. That appears to be the case with Oscar and Lucinda. Their story, told as a long flashback, begins with Oscar as the shy son of a stern English minister, and Lucinda as the strong-willed girl raised on a ranch in the Australian outback. We see them formed by their early lives; he studies for the ministry, she inherits a glassworks and becomes obsessed with glass, and they meet during an ocean voyage from England to Australia. ADVERTISEMENT They meet, indeed, because they gamble. Oscar (Ralph Fiennes) has been introduced to horse racing while studying to be a clergyman, and is transformed by the notion that someone will actually pay him money for predicting which horse will cross the line first. Lucinda (Cate Blanchett) loves cards. Soon they're playing clandestine card games onboard ship, and Oscar is as thrilled by her descriptions of gambling as another man might be by tales of sexual adventures. "Oscar and Lucinda" is based on a novel by Peter Carey, a chronicler of Australian eccentricity; it won the 1988 Booker Prize, Britain's highest literary award. Reading it, I was swept up by the humor of the situation, and by the passion of the two gamblers. For Oscar, gambling is not a sin but an embrace of the rules of chance that govern the entire universe: "We bet that there is a God--we bet our life on it!" There also is the thrill of the forbidden. Once ashore in Sydney, where Oscar finds rooms with a pious church couple, they continue to meet to play cards, and when discovered, they're defiant. Oscar decides he doesn't fit into ordinary society. Lucinda says it is no matter. Even now they are not in love; it is gambling that holds them together, and Oscar believes Lucinda fancies another minister who has gone off to convert the outback. That gives him his great idea: Lucinda's glassworks will fabricate a glass cathedral, and Oscar will superintend the process of floating it upriver to the remote settlement. ADVERTISEMENT For madness, this matches the obsession in Herzog's "Fitzcarraldo" to move a steamship across a strip of dry land. For inspiration, it seems divine--especially since they make a bet on it. Reading the novel, I pictured the glass cathedral as tall and vast, but of course it is a smaller church, one suitable for a growing congregation, and the photography showing its stately river progress is somehow funny and touching at the same time. "Oscar and Lucinda" has been directed by Gillian Armstrong, whose films often deal with people who are right for each other and wrong for everyone else (see her neglected 1993 film "The Last Days of Chez Nous," about a troubled marriage between an Australian and a Frenchman, or recall her 1979 film "My Brilliant Career," in which Judy Davis played a character not unlike Lucinda in spirit). Here there is a dry wit, generated between the well-balanced performances of Fiennes and Blanchett, who seem quietly delighted to be playing two such rich characters. ADVERTISEMENT The film's photography, by Geoffrey Simpson, begins with standard, lush 19th century period evocations of landscape and sky, but then subtly grows more insistent on the quirky character of early Sydney, and then cuts loose altogether from the everyday in the final sequences involving the glass church. In many period films, we are always aware that we're watching the past: Here Oscar and Lucinda seem ahead of us, filled with freshness and invention, and only the narration (by Geoffrey Rush of "Shine") reminds us that they were, incredibly, someone's grandparents. "Oscar and Lucinda" begins with the look of a period literary adaptation, but this is not Dickens, Austen, Forster or James; Carey's novel is playful and manipulative, and so is the film. Oscar is shy and painfully sincere, Lucinda has evaded her century's strictures on women by finding a private passion, and they would both agree, I believe, that people who worship in glass churches should not throw stones. April 22, 2020 by: Brynley Louise The strange death of David Carradine: Was he murdered? David Carradine was best known for his prolific list of characters adept in the martial art of kung fu. Carradine’s acting credits span widely, including the 1970s television show Kung Fu, a role in the Kill Bill franchise, and even multiple posthumous movie releases. In fact, David Carradine died while in Bangkok for production of the movie Stretch, which was released in 2011, two years after his death at 72. A maid found Carradine on June 4th, 2009 in a closet, strangled by a cord from the drapes. Later, the autopsy revealed he had likely died the day before in reality. Coroners eventually came to the conclusion that David Carradine’s death was an accident of his own making. They believed the actor died performing the act of autoerotic asphyxiation (while pleasuring himself). Before they came to this conclusion, they had considered it a suicide. Past relationships uncover secrets Carradine’s previous wives weren’t bashful in admitting Carradine had a penchant for promiscuous acts during sex, including choking. Despite this, David’s fourth wife didn’t believe he had killed himself. Marina Anderson, who was married to David from 1998 – 2001, claims her ex-husband didn’t “fly solo”, and the facts “didn’t fit”. Anderson is convinced someone else was involved with Carradine’s death. She believes he was murdered. Other skeptics believe someone else was involved, but that it may have been an accident. If David had been taking part in autoerotic asphyxiation, that doesn’t mean he was alone. If he had brought someone to the hotel room with him and things went wrong, it’s possible whomever was with him fled when they realized things had gone too far. MY LATEST VIDEOS Marina, however, still believes Carradine’s death was a malicious act. She claims David had a tendency to wear flashy accessories and not hide his cash. Marina thinks this could have enticed someone to kill David to steal some of his belongings. Whether or not the person had been invited to the room was irrelevant to her. David Carradine’s fourth wife isn’t the only one suspicious of the death, though. His fifth and widowed wife, Annie Bierman, sued the production company making Stretch just one year after his death. Annie’s suit claimed wrongful death and a breach of contract. What happened to David Carradine? Carradine’s family hired a New York forensic pathologist named Michael Baden to investigate the death further. Baden’s conclusion was that it was obviously not of natural causes, not a suicide, and therefore an accident. Baden did not write off the possibility of autoerotic asphyxiation. When news broke of David Carradine’s death, there were contradicting stories on his hand position. Some purported his hands were tied above his head, while others say his hands were behind his back. Baden apparently reported David’s hands were above his head. How someone could take part in autoerotic asphyxiation on their own, while his or her hands were tied (in any capacity) was not addressed by investigators, nor the odd location of his body: the hotel closet. Official records still state David Carradine died on his own in an accident. Meanwhile, most of the people who knew the man personally have a difficult time believing that’s what happened. They’re convinced someone else was involved, but nobody has any idea who that person may be. Reviews Boxcar Bertha Roger Ebert July 19, 1972 NOW STREAMING ON: Powered by JustWatch "Boxcar Bertha" is a weirdly interesting movie and not really the sleazy exploitation film the ads promise. It finds its inspiration in the exploits of Boxcar Bertha Thompson, an outlaw folk hero who operated in Arkansas during the Depression. I am not sure whether she was called "Boxcar" because of the way she was built or because of where she liked to spend her evenings, but I can report that Barbara Hershey, who plays her in the movie, is built like the proverbial structure of brick. For that we can be grateful. ADVERTISEMENT The movie is set in a murky Southern territory of sweat and violence, and gives us Bertha as a forthright young girl who a gets involved in violence almost by accident. She falls in love with a certain Big Bill Shelley (David Carradine), who seems loosely modeled on the anarchist organizer Big Bill Haywood. The two of them meet other friends: Rake Brown, a slick young gambler with a yellow streak, and Von Morton, a sturdy black who wields harmonica and shotgun. And then their gang is complete and their first murder just sort of happens when Bertha shoots a gambler who is about to shoot Rake. The movie's progression from young love to the most-wanted list reminds us of "Bonnie and Clyde," and I suppose it was meant to. But there's a lot more going on than a remake or rip-off. ADVERTISEMENT I have the notion that Roger Corman, American-International's most successful producer of exploitation films, sent his actors and crew South with the hope of getting a nice, simple, sexy, violent movie for the summer trade. What he got is something else, and something better. Director Martin Scorsese has gone for mood and atmosphere more than for action, and his violence is always blunt and unpleasant -- never liberating and exhilarating, as the New Violence is supposed to be. We get the feeling we're inhabiting the dark night of a soul. The character of Bertha is developing along unexpected lines, too. She is promiscuous with her body but not with her mind, and when Big Bill is sent to prison, she remains in love with him but goes to work in a whorehouse anyway. The way Scorsese choreographs this scene is interesting: The madam brings Bertha into the parlor. Bertha looks. Turns around to leave. Then turns around again, matter-of-factly deciding to stay. You have to adapt to survive. ADVERTISEMENT There are some good visuals in the movie a shot of convicts running between piles of lumber, a shot of the gang running down a seemingly cattle chute, and the curiously circular use of the railway. Bertha and her gang are forever hopping freights, and once they even think they've made it to Memphis, but all of their train rides take them back to where they were before, as if Godot were waiting at the end of the line. ADVERTISEMENT Scorsese remains one of the bright young hopes of American movies. His brilliant first film won the 1968 Chicago Film Festival as "I Call First" and later played as "Who's That Knocking at My Door?" He was an assistant editor and director of "Woodstock," and now, many frustrated projects later, here is his first conventional feature. He is good with actors, good with his camera and determined to take the grade-zilch exploitation film and bend it to his own vision. Within the limits of the film's possibilities, he has succeeded. Danger Girl/G.I. Joe From Danger Girl/G.I. Joe From Danger Girl/G.I. Joe After the acquisition of the Danger Girl characters by IDW it was decided to first launch the characters under the IDW banner with a crossover with one of the major properties at IDW, G.I. The remaining female members (Cover Girl , Lady Jaye and Jinx ) come up with a plan where they will contact the Danger Girl team (Cover Girl had previously met Johnny Barracuda .) The team shows up and exposes the U.S. president as Zarana in disguise. Soon enough it is revealed that the Danger Girl team already has an operative in place and she informs them of the plan. Firefly is to head to Moscow and detonate one of the missiles while Major Bludd is to go to Beijing to detonate another. Three teams head out, one to each of the two cities and the third to the Cobra base. By now Abbey is under suspicion of Baroness , Destro and Cobra Commander and is captured by Zartan when she attempts to free Scarlett and Flint. Christine was extremely physically beautiful and very young...
