Business traveller Eric Griffin of Philadelphia says he has sworn off Pearson for the time being, following his recent travel experience. Griffin flew from Philadelphia to Toronto on June 27 for an important meeting with a prospective client for his phone accessories company. Things didn't go as planned. After Griffin's Air Canada flight landed in Toronto, he said it sat on the tarmac for at least two hours, and then he spent the following three hours dealing with his missing checked bag. It also has serotonergic activity by increasing serotonin synthesis.[1] Clonazepam has anticonvulsant and anxiolytic effects. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of seizure disorders and panic disorders.[2][3] It also has off-label use as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy to treat mania, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, tardive dyskinesia, and REM sleep behavior disorder.[4][5][6] Seizure Disorders Clonazepam has a broad range of activities against different types of seizure disorders. Its primary indications are acute management of epilepsy and acute treatment of non-convulsive status epilepticus (complex partial seizures or absence seizures). Panic Disorder Clonazepam causes a significant improvement in patients who have panic disorders with or without agoraphobia. However, it is also less likely to cause rebound anxiety upon cessation than other benzodiazepines because of its longer half-life. Clinicians also use it for the acute treatment of panic attacks.[8] Acute Mania Clonazepam has anticonvulsant and serotonin agonist activity, both of which are associated with its antimanic effect. Therefore, it is sometimes helpful for the treatment of acute mania. The research found it to be significantly more effective than lithium in reducing manic symptoms, and fewer patients required PRN administration of haloperidol, as well as the number of days on which haloperidol was needed, was lower during clonazepam treatment. This way, the clonazepam reduces the need for antipsychotic drugs in the treatment of acute mania and decreases the risk of side effects in these patients.[3] Nowadays, a combination of a benzodiazepine and the antipsychotic haloperidol is considered the most effective treatment of acute agitation in the emergency department.[9] Miscellaneous Uses Clonazepam is also an option for treating akathisia, restless leg syndrome, rapid eye movement behavior disorder, and bruxism.[10][11][12][13] Go to: Mechanism of Action Clonazepam is highly potent and a long-acting benzodiazepine. It exerts pharmacological effects by acting as a positive allosteric modulator on GABA-A receptors. The GABA-A receptor is a ligand-gated chloride ion-selective channel which endogenous ligand is GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Benzodiazepines (BZDs) facilitate GABA-A action by increasing the frequency of chloride channel opening resulting in hyperpolarization of the neurons and decreased firing, thus producing calming effects on the brain by reducing the excitability neurons. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter present in abundance in the cortex and limbic system. There are three types of GABA receptors; A, B, and C. However, BZDs act only on GABA-A receptors. Each receptor complex has 2 GABA-binding sites and 1 BZD-binding site and is made of five subunits two alpha, two beta, and one gamma. BZDs do not bind to the same receptor site on the receptor complex as the endogenous ligand GABA but bind to distinct BZD-binding sites situated at the interface between the alpha and gamma subunits. The binding results in a conformational change in the GABA-A receptor's chloride channel that results in the hyperpolarization of the cell and accounts for GABA's inhibitory effect throughout the central nervous system.[14] GABA receptors are also classified into various BZDs receptors based on the isoforms of the alpha subunit. The benzodiazepine type-1 receptors (BZ1), which contain alpha-1 subunits, are present in abundance in the cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum are responsible for their anticonvulsant and sedative effects. Whereas benzodiazepine type-2 receptors containing alpha-2 subunits, mostly concentrated in the limbic system, motor neurons, and dorsal horn of the spinal cord, mediate the anxiolytic effects of BZDs. Go to: Administration Clonazepam is available as a immediate-release tablets of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, and orally disintegrated tablets (ODT) of 0.125 mg, 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg strength. It may be administered once at bedtime to minimize somnolence. The patient should take ODT tablets with water by swallowing the whole tablet immediately after removing it from the package. Clonazepam has rapid absorption after oral administration. The maximum plasma concentration is reached within one to four hours after oral administration, and it is approximately 85% bound to plasma proteins. Clonazepam is highly metabolized by the liver's cytochrome P-450, particularly by CYP3A, in a dose-dependent manner. The elimination half-life of clonazepam is around 30 to 40 hours. Treatment of Absence Seizures, Petit Mal Variant (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), and Akinetic and Myoclonic Seizures (myoclonia) Adults and adolescents (weight > 30 kg): Therapy should start with 0.5 mg tablets taken orally three times per day. The dosage may be increased by 0.5 to 1 mg every three days until seizures are under control. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 20 mg. Geriatric patients: The same dosage as adults. However, they require lower initial dosages as the elderly may be more sensitive to the effects of benzodiazepines. Pediatric patients (weight < 30 kg): Initially, for the pediatric patients, 0.01 to 0.03 mg/kg/day orally (not to exceed 0.05 mg/kg/day) divided into two or three doses is recommended. The maximum dose in this population should not exceed 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg in 3 doses. Treatment of Panic Disorder Treatment should start at a dose of 0.25 mg tablets, taken twice a day orally for three days, after which the dose should be increased to 0.5 mg tablets twice daily. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 1 to 4 mg. Specific Patient Population Pregnancy: Clonazepam is a class D drug. It has links with some facial and cardiac malformations of the human fetus. However, the data is equivocal. The use of clonazepam in late pregnancy can lead to either floppy infant syndrome or severe withdrawal symptoms in the neonate, including hypotonia, cyanosis, apneic spells, and impaired metabolic responses to cold stress. Clonazepam should only be used during pregnancy if the clinical benefits outweigh the clinical risks to the fetus.[15] Lactation: Clonazepam is excreted into the breastmilk, although not in a significant amount. But for the premature neonate or those exposed during the pregnancy, it may cause problems because the pathway by which it undergoes metabolism is usually impaired in newborns. Therefore, such neonates should be monitored for the development of symptoms, and ideally, patients should be advised not to use clonazepam if they are breastfeeding.[15] Liver Impairment and/or Renal Impairment: There is no dosage adjustment information given in the manufacturer's labeling; use with caution. Clonazepam is hepatically metabolized and renally excreted; its level requires monitoring in hepatic or renal impairment as it can lead to toxic accumulation of the drug in the body in either condition. Clonazepam is contraindicated in severe liver disease.[16][17] Go to: Adverse Effects The adverse effects of clonazepam derive from its property to act as a central nervous system depressant like all the other BZD drugs. Common Side Effects The use of clonazepam is most commonly associated with lethargy, fatigue, sedation, drowsiness, and motor impairment (impaired coordination, impaired balance, dizziness).[14][18] Less Common Side Effects Less commonly, it causes blurred vision, confusion, irritability, loss of libido, lack of motivation, psychomotor agitation, hallucination, worsening of depression, short-term memory loss, and anterograde amnesia, especially with high doses.[19][20][21] Occasional Side Effects Occasional adverse effects of clonazepam include personality changes, behavioral disturbance, ataxia, increased frequency of seizures, thrombocytopenia, and dysphoria.[22][23][24][25][26][27] Rare Side Effects Some of the rare but important side effects of clonazepam include paradoxical disinhibition, i.e., is excitement, rage, and impulsive behavior. The Elderly are especially prone to this side effect. Other side effects are suicide, psychosis, and incontinence.[28][29][30][31][32]Long-term use of benzodiazepine can lead to depression and sexual dysfunction.[19][33] Go to: Contraindications Narrow-angle Glaucoma Clonazepam being a BZD drug is generally contraindicated in acute closed-angle glaucoma. Theoretically, these agents can induce relaxation of the iris and also have a mild anticholinergic activity, which can precipitate an acute attack of closed-angle glaucoma.[34] Significant Liver Disease The liver extensively metabolizes clonazepam. In the case of liver disease, benzodiazepine oxidation decreases, which leads to the accumulation of the drug and result in excessive sedation and respiratory depression.[16] Hypersensitivity to Drug or Components of the Formulation Hypersensitivity to clonazepam is rare, but there are occasional reports. Elderly and children are especially prone to the adverse effects of clonazepam due to impaired or immature liver function. Complete Blood Count, Renal, and Liver Function Clonazepam is hepatically metabolized and renally excreted; its level requires monitoring in hepatic or renal impairment as it can lead to toxic accumulation of the drug in the body in either condition. It can also rarely cause thrombocytopenia, so platelet levels should also be monitored.[17] Worsening of Seizures Clonazepam can cause a worsening of seizures in persons having multiple types of seizure disorder. In that case, its dosing requires adjustment or an increase in the dose. Abrupt Discontinuation and Tolerance Abrupt withdrawal of clonazepam should be avoided, particularly in those patients on long-term, high-dose therapy for a seizure disorder or other conditions as it may result in status epilepticus and withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, irritability, insomnia, tremors, headache, depression, sweating, confusion, hallucinations, and seizures. Long-term use also leads to developing tolerance, especially to its anticonvulsant properties, which can precipitate a seizure. Respiratory Compromise Patients with compromised respiratory function, such as cases of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnea, etc., should take clonazepam with extreme caution. It significantly increases the risk of respiratory depression. It also causes hypersalivation, so it may aggravate conditions in which patients have difficulty handling secretions. Impaired Cognitive and Motor Performance Due to its potential effect for inducing CNS depression, clonazepam may impair judgment, thinking, and motor skills. Patients should be advised against the use of heavy machinery, driving, or any other activity that requires higher motor skills. It should be carefully prescribed in patients with a neuromuscular disorder such as parkinsonism, myasthenia gravis as it can exacerbate their condition. Care is also necessary when prescribing this drug to the elderly as it greatly increases the risk of falls due to poor motor control. Suicidal Behavior Clonazepam is associated with an increased risk of depression, suicidal behavior, and thinking. So the patients and their caregivers should be cautioned to look for any symptoms of worsening of depression, changes in mood or behavior, or suicidal ideation. Alcohol Use Patients should be strongly advised against the use of clonazepam and alcohol concomitantly since both are CNS depressants. Their cumulative effect can result in sedation, severe respiratory depression, low blood pressure, and death. Go to: Toxicity The therapeutic range of clonazepam is from 0.02 to 0.08 mcg/mL. Any level over 0.08 mcg/mL is considered toxic. The symptoms of overdose develop rapidly. The supportive care includes monitoring vitals, IV fluids for hypotension, atropine for bradycardia, and maintaining the patency of the airway by intubation or artificial respiration if respiratory depression develops. The use of flumazenil, a competitive benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, as the antidote is controversial as its use correlates with lowered seizure threshold and widened QRS complex resulting in adverse effects. Its side effects do not outweigh the potential benefits. It has no role in multidrug toxicity and should only be used following a consultation with a medical toxicologist.[36] Go to: Enhancing Healthcare Team Outcomes The concern lies in the healthcare community about the inappropriate long-term use of prescribed clonazepam and other BZDs drugs despite their serious adverse effects profile like the risk of falls, cognitive impairment, and addiction. Interventions to decrease the inappropriate use of clonazepam involve an interprofessional team that includes clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and primary care providers. Clonazepam is usually started after an acute event or during the hospital stay by the clinicians. Once ordered by the clinicians, nurses usually administer the drug. Following administration in hospital settings, its use may carry over to the primary care without any indication; this is where a pharmacist performing medication reconciliation on discharge is invaluable. In primary care, patients also influence the clinicians by having this conceived notion about clonazepam and BZDs drugs being a wonder drug to make them feel and sleep better. These issues can result in poor patient outcomes resulting from drug dependence, misuse, abuse, motor impairment, etc. Therefore, an interprofessional approach is required to develop ideas to reduce the use of hypnotics and develop interventions to prevent misuse in the hospital and at the primary and secondary care interface. The prescriber, nurse, and pharmacist should use controlled substance prescription monitoring program (CSPMP) databases to ensure safe and proper use of benzodiazepines, sedative-hypnotics, opioids, and other controlled substances. CNN CNN Follow 'Black hole police' discover dormant black hole outside our galaxy for first time Katie Hunt - Yesterday 3:39 p.m. Comments | 1 Share An elusive type of black hole has been discovered in a neighboring galaxy for the first time, according to a new study based on observations from the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) Very Large Telescope. Dormant stellar-mass black holes, which form when massive stars reach the end of their lives, are particularly hard to spot since they do not interact much with their surroundings. This is because, unlike most black holes, dormant ones don’t emit high levels of X-ray radiation. While thought to be fairly common cosmic phenomenon, this type of black hole previously had not been “unambiguously detected outside our galaxy,” according to the team of US and European researchers involved in the study. The newly detected black hole, called VFTS 243, is at least nine times the mass of our sun, and it orbits a hot, blue star weighing 25 times the sun’s mass, making it part of a binary system. “It is incredible that we hardly know of any dormant black holes, given how common astronomers believe them to be,” said study coauthor Pablo Marchant, an astronomer at KU Leuven, a university in Belgium, in a news release. The Weather Network The oldest galaxy ever seen has been spotted by the James Webb Space Telescope Scott Sutherland - Yesterday 4:01 p.m. It's only been two weeks since the very first images from Webb were revealed to the world. One of those spectacular views of the cosmos was the furthest look ever back in time and the farthest distance seen out into the cosmos. In that 'deep field' view were galaxies older than 13 billion years. Now, a team of astronomers has seen even further back in time. Poring over some of the earliest science observations the telescope took, they found a galaxy that stood out from the rest. Named GLASS-z13, this appears to be the oldest galaxy we've ever seen. Blues represent the shortest wavelengths and reds the longest wavelengths. The intense red of GLASS-z13 (at the centre) means that it is only picked up at the longest of wavelengths seen by Webb's NIRCam instrument. According to Rohan Naidu, the lead author of the research paper detailing this discovery, NIRCam is only seeing this galaxy in the longest of wavelengths because the shorter wavelengths are all being lost before the light gets to us. "At really high redshifts, the Universe is full of neutral Hydrogen that soaks up all the blue photons in these spectra resulting in this 'dropout' behaviour," Naidu said in a post on Twitter. WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? This 'dropout' is similar to why we see red skies at sunset and sunrise. The light from the Sun is scattered as it passes through Earth's atmosphere. The shorter blue wavelengths are scattered first, so we see a blue sky throughout much of the day. However, the more atmosphere the light passes through, the more wavelengths that are scattered. Thus, when the Sun is on the horizon, its light passes through enough air that blue, green, and yellow are all filtered out, leaving only oranges and reds to reach our eyes. This is also why lunar eclipses turn the Moon red, since only the red light escapes from the night side of the atmosphere to shine onto the lunar surface. In the case of GLASS-z13, the photons of light it has emitted have been passing through the vast, nearly empty expanse of space. For those photons to have encountered enough 'stuff' to scatter or absorb all of the shorter wavelengths, they had to travel an extremely far distance. Additionally, as these photons were travelling, the universe was in the process of expanding. So, over time, as these energetic light particles oscillated up and down, back and forth, each oscillation gradually covered a greater and greater distance. This stretched the wavelength of the light, shifting the colours of all the photons towards red and infrared. This is the "redshift" that astronomers talk about when discussing distant objects in the universe. NASA/CSA/ESA/STScI The photons that finally reached us here and were captured by NIRCam have been stretched so much, and so many of the shorter wavelengths have just been filtered out by the 'stuff' that lies in between the galaxies and stars that it provides us with an idea of just how far away GLASS-z13 was when it emitted those photons. And since light takes a precise amount of time to travel through space, we can also tell how long ago that was. In their study, Naidu and his colleagues determined that GLASS-z13 is from 13.4-13.5 billion years ago. That means we see it as it was when the universe was just 300-400 million years old, or about 2-3 per cent of its current age. Before this, the oldest galaxy astronomers had ever seen was GNz-11, which was spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2015. Credit: Naidu et al. 2022 Naidu says that, despite the potential record set by GLASS-z13, GLASS-z11 is actually his favourite of the two galaxies from this study. GN-z11 just showed up as a dim splotch back in 2015, so it was difficult to tell what kind of structure galaxies had that early in the universe. However, based on the simulation of GLASS-z11, it clearly shows up in JWST's imagery as a disk galaxy. Thus, GLASS-z11 provides a much clearer picture of what the universe was like back then. A RECORD BUT NOT FOR LONG JWST detecting light with a redshift of z=13 means that it has already pushed our view of the universe another 100 million years closer to the big bang. The remarkable thing about this is how quickly Webb gathered the observations that led to this discovery. Although GLASS-z13 likely holds the new record for farthest galaxy ever seen and the furthest we've seen back in time, it probably won't hold that title for very long. He was probably born and raised somewhere in the United States, and had at least one sibling, an older brother named Dan. Dan volunteered for military service and served a number of tours in Vietnam to keep his younger brother from being drafted. The young Commander, meanwhile, ran a largely unsuccessful used car lot. Following Dan's return from the war he opened a veteran's hospital, which was eventually burned down by a former patient. A judge ruled that the hospital had been burned by Dan as part of an insurance fraud scheme, and Dan lost everything. Despondent, he turned to drinking, ultimately driving drunk and causing a crash that killed him and a family of three. Devastated by the loss of his brother, and refusing to acknowledge Dan's role in his own demise, the Commander sought out the only remaining member of the family who died in the accident, Snake Eyes. The pair became friends and worked together as vigilantes for some time, before the Commander attempted to incite Snake Eyes into joining him in killing the judge who he blamed for Dan's death. Snake Eyes refused and left the Commander, who killed the judge himself and swore revenge on Snake Eyes for abandoning him and his cause. The Commander began to turn towards crime, eventually amassing a group of fanatical followers. Creation Cobra Commander was created by Larry Hama. Character Evolution Marvel In his original Marvel comics appearances, the Commander's brother was said to have descended into alcoholism due to post-traumatic stress disorder. The Commander begins constructing elaborate revenge fantasies around Snake Eyes, who he irrationally blames for his brother's death. This culminates in him sending an assassin to kill Snake Eyes, though this assassination attempt fails. The Commander attempts to return to his life with his family, but fails when his wife learns of his murderous actions. Perceiving her attempt to go to the police as a betrayal, he kidnaps their infant son and takes up an itinerant con man life, eventually becoming the Commander of the fanatical Cobra. Devil's Due When the G.I. Joe line was picked up by Devil's Due, they altered the Commander's origin to the current story. Battle Action Force No Caption Provided The Commander was given a background as the leader of a terrorist organization known as the Red Shadows. While he headed this organization he was known as Baron Ironblood. He betrayed the Red Shadows to the UN, and then adopted the identity of Cobra Commander. IDW When GI Joe was taken over by IDW, Cobra Commander was explained to be not a single person, but a title that is passed from person to person. This person is elected by the Cobra Council, and tends to operate more in the shadows than earlier versions of the character. Major Story Arcs Rise to Power The Commander begins to expand and consolidate his power by setting up in the economically depressed town of Springfield. He quickly sways the inhabitants to his side, swelling the ranks of the nascent Cobra greatly. He soon forms his followers into a paramilitary terrorist organization that is unquestioningly loyal to him. Cobra quickly grew in influence throughout the world, firmly entrenching itself in a number of unstable countries and setting itself up as a powerful criminal empire. Around this time his son, Billy, turns against his father and resists the actions of Cobra. The organization begins to attract the attention of the United States government, who forms GI Joes to combat Cobra. Meanwhile, the Commander forms the High Command to deal with the demands of running the now-massive Cobra. The Commander quickly becomes the target of an assassination plot formulated by members of the High Command, who seek to take power for themselves. Loss of Power The assassination plot is foiled, and the would-be assassin revealed to be Billy. The Commander attempts to torture information about the plot out of his son, who refuses to give in. Billy is rescued by Storm Shadow, and later apparently killed in an explosion. Later, the Commander and Destro become trapped underground during an attempted assault on the Pit. Believed dead, the pair manage to escape and make their way back towards headquarters. On the way, the Commander learns that Billy is only in critical condition, and vows to become a better father. He spends some time taking care of his son before his inability to give up on world conquest causes his son to abandon him. The Commander renounced Cobra and his leadership of it in order to win his son back. He is shot in the back and apparently killed by Fred VII, a member of the Crimson Guard who is angered by the Commander's renunciation of the organization. Return Fred VII secretly takes up the identity of the Commander and masquerades as him for several years. The true Commander, however, managed to survive the attack and is able to recuperate fully. He keeps his continued survival a secret for some time, using the opportunity to reintegrate himself into Cobra and build up a loyal group of followers within the larger organization. After his erstwhile grave is found to be empty, the Commander returns with force. He has scores of "disloyal" Cobra operatives buried alive, and begins to institute mandatory brainwashing for all members to ensure complete loyalty. Skills and Abilities Cobra Commander is an intelligent and charismatic leader. He is skilled at intelligence gathering and espionage, as well as being proficient in armed and unarmed combat. Other Versions Danger Girl/G.I. Joe After the acquisition of the Danger Girl characters by IDW it was decided to first launch the characters under the IDW banner with a crossover with one of the major properties at IDW, G.I. Joe (as they are owned by the same company it seems possible that these characters exist in the same continuity as G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, though this is never confirmed.) The series starts off with a dog chase involving Scarlett and Flint and they are soon shot down. It is revealed that they were providing escort for a shipment of rediscovered missiles with great destructive power. They are soon shot down though and the missiles are taken by Cobra , who also take the two prisoners. Once in Cobra custody they come across Abbey Chase who is acting undercover, though the two members of G.I. Joe do not know this. Elsewhere the American president arrives to the USS Flagg and informs the Joe team to stand down and to not seek to free their teammates. General Flag orders them to stand down. The remaining female members (Cover Girl , Lady Jaye and Jinx ) come up with a plan where they will contact the Danger Girl team (Cover Girl had previously met Johnny Barracuda .) The team shows up and exposes the U.S. president as Zarana in disguise. Soon enough it is revealed that the Danger Girl team already has an operative in place and she informs them of the plan. Firefly is to head to Moscow and detonate one of the missiles while Major Bludd is to go to Beijing to detonate another. Three teams head out, one to each of the two cities and the third to the Cobra base. By now Abbey is under suspicion of Baroness, Cobra Commander and Destro and is captured by Zartan when she attempts to free Scarlett and Flint. While they are trying to escape a team of Low Light, Snake Eyes and Stalker arrive to free them. Meanwhile in Beijing a team of Jinx, Johnny Barracuda and Sonya Savage stop Major Bludd while a team of Sydney Savage, Cover Girl and Roadblock stop Firefly. It is soon revealed that there is another missile which is headed for the homing beacon which Zarana has placed on the USS Flagg. Silicon Valerie , Duke and Lady Jaye quickly deal with it. Meanwhile at the Cobra base Storm Shadow has arrived to stop the Joes and he engages Snake-Eyes in combat. Nymphomaniac: Part Two Film 4 out of 5 stars Nymphomaniac: Part Two Time Out says 4 out of 5 stars Danish director Lars Von Trier’s anti-raunchy sexual epic about one hyper-promiscuous woman assumes a darker shade in this second, final episode. Our anti-heroine Joe (first Stacy Martin, later Charlotte Gainsbourg) now recounts to her one-man audience (Stellan Skarsgård) how, in middle age, she came to lose all sense of sexual pleasure and find a sadder joy in masochism, threat and violence. While much of the sex in the first film came across as a childish game, here it feels like self-imposed punishment as Joe submits to the whips of an S&M master (Jamie Bell) and the dangerous thrills of sex with strangers, abandoning her sleeping child at night. It’s now, too, that Von Trier starts to bring together loose strands and build theme upon theme. If he directed ‘Les Misérables’, it would look like this: time-hopping, expansive, episodic, crude, jolty, anarchic, self-depreciating but also unashamedly melodramatic by the time it reaches its conclusion. Joe is on a tragic trajectory and can’t escape her past: that past, we learn, is Jérome (Shia LaBeouf), her first lover and later her boss, partner, father of her child and ultimately her nemesis. The pair meet and re-meet with all the subtlety of dodgy opera. Von Trier even makes a joke of this by having Gainsbourg admit in her confession-narration to Skarsgård that coincidences in her tale are rife. It’s this self-mockery that stops ‘Nymphomaniac’ being overly grim and reminds you of the puppetmaster behind it all. We’re never far from Von Trier, and both Skarsgård and Gainsbourg appear to offer different versions of the author himself. ADVERTISING Von Trier’s pooling of an international cast (Bell, LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Jean-Marc Barr and others), all speaking English in continental European settings, has become a filmmaking style all of its own. You either run with it or laugh. Roughly, this is supposed to be England (only the currency gives it away; LaBeouf’s wonky accent is presumably the decoy) and equally roughly, between Part One and Part Two, we move from the 1970s to now. But rough is the word: you don’t come to a Von Trier film for social realism and a cast-iron sense of time and place. You come for raw honesty; provocation; contradictions; flights of fancy. You also come for brave, committed turns from actresses. And both newcomer Martin and old-hand Gainsbourg anchor these two films with performances you can’t take your eyes off; they’re the calm eyes of Von Trier’s storm. Is there any sign here of a chastened Von Trier after the ‘I’m a Nazi’ scandal that engulfed him at Cannes in 2011? You only have to hear Skarsgård’s character musing on how non-active paedophiles ‘deserve a medal’ or see Gainsbourg sandwiched between two African immigrants with hard-ons to know the answer. He might not have been in control of the edit of this version of his film (the uncut version will emerge later), but the frank, unflinching and playful two-part ‘Nymphomaniac’ couldn’t have been made by anyone else. They want to know our diplomatic coordination. They want to know if more sanctions are coming. "It's probably the most primitive thing in the inner solar system at this time." Jewitt has published several papers on Comet K2 and was one of the first astronomers to study the object after it was discovered by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (PanSTARRS) in Hawaii in May 2017. At that time, the comet was about 17 times farther away from the sun than Earth is. Scientists call Earth's average distance from the sun an astronomical unit; one AU measures about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). Even at that distance, out between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, the comet was emitting what scientists call a coma: a fuzzy halo of gas that extended 80,000 miles (130,000 kilometers) into space. That coma forms when frozen material on the comet sublimates, or transitions from a solid directly to a gas. "As [comets] come in closer to the sun, they get warmer and warmer," Jewitt said. "And then the water ice is able to sublimate and create a rushing atmosphere of gas that makes the coma and the tail of the comet." Related: Why is Comet K2 so hard to see given its huge size? This deep in the solar system, the sun's rays are too feeble to cause any of the comet's frozen material to sublimate. Typically, that process only begins around Jupiter's orbit, at five AU. Astronomers' surprise only grew when they found this halo in images taken even before the official discovery, when the comet was 23 AU from the sun, beyond the orbit of the solar system's outermost planet, Neptune. Then, Jewitt determined that K2 must have already been active for several years when that first image was taken. Backward modelling showed that the comet must then have been oozing gas some 35 AU from the sun, deep within the Kuiper Belt, the disk of debris, space rocks and comets beyond the orbit of Neptune. "At 35 AU from the sun, temperature is probably something like 40 degrees above absolute zero," Jewitt said. (Absolute zero corresponds to minus 460 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 273 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the natural movement of atoms stops). "So we know that water is as solid as rock there. It couldn't be responsible for the activity that we saw at those large distances." A source of surprises Ever since, Comet K2 has been a source of fascinating discoveries, surprising scientists with unexpected behaviors. But Jewitt thinks that what astronomers see K2 doing is not unique at all. Rather, the comet's behavior is probably typical for comets making their first trip toward the sun — we just haven't been able to observe it before. "What makes this comet special is that it was discovered early," Jewitt said. "We've been able to follow the way the comet changes with distance from the sun over a much larger range than has ever been done before." Comet K2 comes from even farther away than the Kuiper Belt, Jewitt said. The comet's original home was most likely the Oort Cloud, the repository of comets and planetary fragments that extends from 2,000 to 200,000 AU from the sun. There, surrounded by billions of other frozen snowballs and space rocks, K2 spent billions of years slumbering until it received an unexpected gravitational kick, probably from a star passing by the outer edges of the solar system. This kick propelled K2 on the voyage that we can now observe in real time. Pristine or not It's the fact that the comet is on its debut trip through the solar system that makes it so scientifically valuable. With so little exposure to heat in its past, K2 should carry locked inside it chemicals that long since faded from more typical comets. "Temperatures in the Oort cloud are really just a few degrees above absolute zero," Jewitt said. "Any material that was put into the nucleus of the comet when it formed has been frozen solid ever since. So the idea is that we are studying a little piece of the protoplanetary disk from the beginning of the solar system, which has been completely unchanged." Comets are frequently considered to be time capsules carrying messages from the earliest days of the solar system formation. What astronomers are witnessing on K2, however, suggests that their chemistry may have changed much more than previously expected, as the ice balls made their journeys to the sun. "If the activity begins really as far away from the sun as we see with this comet, then what we are seeing in other comets closer to the sun is not necessarily that pristine," Jewitt said. "Comet K2 helps us understand how primordial or pristine are the comets that we can observe in the inner solar system." Carbon monoxide From the earliest observations, Jewitt wanted to explain what makes up K2's mesmerizing coma. Since it couldn't be water ice that was sublimating from the surface, he and his colleagues knew there must be other chemical compounds turning into gas at such low temperatures. "The one that we picked on first of all was carbon monoxide," Jewitt said. "Carbon monoxide has been detected in other comets closer to the sun, although in much lower quantities than water. Carbon monoxide is very volatile and hard to freeze into a solid." Jewitt and his colleagues theorized that as the comet slightly warmed while moving toward the planetary region of the solar system, the carbon monoxide ice near its surface turned into a gas that streamed into the vacuum of interplanetary space like constant wind. This wind stirred up dust particles from the comet's surface, creating the round puffball-like coma. But it took several failed attempts to measure the chemical composition of the comet to confirm the theory, Jewitt said. The team finally succeeded last year when the comet reached the orbit of Jupiter, and the scientists finally spotted carbon monoxide in the heart of the comet. Missing tail As astronomers observed K2 make its way to the inner solar system, they expected it to brighten. They also waited for the coma to develop the trademark tail-like shape typical for comets passing Earth. But for years, nothing was changing with K2, prompting both questions and theories. "Those comet tails are caused by the pressure of sunlight that pushes the dust particles [that come out of the comet] away from the sun," Jewitt said. "This comet didn't have one until fairly recently." To Jewitt, that means that the dust being blown out of the comet by ice turning to gas must be larger than scientists expected. Much larger, in fact: About a million times more massive. "We were able to estimate the size [of those particles] to be, like, a 10th of a millimeter (about as wide as a human hair) or bigger," Jewitt said. "But the expectation was that because the initial sublimation [of the gasses] is very weak, they couldn't possibly expel big particles. Like on a windy day, when you see dust stirred on the street, you don't see cars blown down the street because they are so heavy." When K2 makes its closest approach to Earth on Wednesday (July 13), it will be an underwhelming skywatching target. Well beyond the orbit of Mars, the comet will barely be visible even with binoculars or backyard telescopes. But professional astronomers like Jewitt will keep K2 at the crosshairs of their powerful machines as the comet continues moving toward its December perihelion, when it is closest to the sun. They will try to extract as much science as possible, watching whether it undergoes the expected transformation, and then following it as it heads back into the Oort Cloud. Jewitt thinks the James Webb Space Telescope, the first images of which were unveiled to the public on Tuesday (July 12), could shed more light on the mysterious comet K2. The telescope's powerful spectrometers could reveal the chemical composition of the comet in a much greater detail, including that of its oddly behaving dust. "If we get the infrared spectrum with Webb, then we'll be able to figure out exactly what is in this coma. What type of dust do we see there?" Jewitt said.
