NEWS AND VIEWS 14 AUGUST 2019 Signs that Jupiter was mixed by a giant impact Simulations suggest that Jupiter’s dilute core might be the result of a collision between the planet and a Uranus-mass planetary embryo. This finding indicates that giant impacts could be common during planet formation. Tristan Guillot PDF version In the past couple of years, NASA’s Juno spacecraft has measured Jupiter’s gravitational field with exquisite accuracy1,2. The results have revealed that the planet’s fluid hydrogen–helium envelope does not have a uniform composition: the inner part contains more heavy elements than the outer part3,4. Writing in Nature, Liu et al.5 propose that this asymmetry resulted from a head-on collision between the young Jupiter and a planetary embryo that had a mass about ten times that of Earth. The authors suggest that the primordial cores of the planet and of the embryo would have merged and then partially mixed with Jupiter’s envelope, explaining the structure of the planet seen today. For example, the Moon is covered in craters, and was formed by a collision that occurred 4.5 billion years ago between Earth and a massive body6. Although impacts leave no direct imprint on the surfaces of fluid planets, the tilts of the rotational axes of Saturn (27°), Uranus (98°) and Neptune (30°) might indicate that violent collisions occurred in the past7. After all, it is known that massive planetary embryos on the order of ten Earth masses must have been present in the early Solar System8, in addition to the planets that are still here. Jupiter, with its small tilt (3°), seems to have escaped unscathed7. But according to Liu and colleagues, this was not the case. Jupiter is mostly made of hydrogen and helium. However, observations of its atmospheric composition9 and gravitational field show that it contains a non-negligible proportion of heavier elements in the form of a central core and in the hydrogen–helium envelope. This envelope is fluid and is expected to be largely convective10, so it was surprising when Juno revealed that the envelope’s composition is not uniform. Instead, the core seems to be partially diluted in the envelope, extending to almost half of the planet’s radius3,4 (Fig. 1). Figure 1 | Three phases of Jupiter. The accretion of this material would need to have stopped after the planet had grown to about half of its present mass. Formation models indicate that this hypothesis is unlikely. In these models, when Jupiter reaches about 30 Earth masses, the growth of the envelope by accretion is fast11, and the planet efficiently pushes away any dust particle that is millimetre-sized or larger12. As a result, the envelope should be poor in heavy elements. Any subsequent delivery of heavy elements by planetesimals (the asteroid-sized precursors of planets) or small planets is inefficient and cannot explain a heavy-element abundance that would increase with depth, as is observed. Erosion of the core into the envelope is possible10,13, but simulations show that this process tends to remove any small composition gradients that exist in the envelope, rather than increase them14. A deeper look at Jupiter The solution proposed by Liu et al. is simple. In their model, a planetary embryo that has a dense core of heavy elements collides with the forming Jupiter. The cores of the two bodies then merge and become partially mixed with Jupiter’s envelope. This explanation requires a massive embryo (of about ten Earth masses) and an impact that is somewhat head-on, but these two requirements seem reasonably likely. The authors show that cooling and subsequent convective mixing of the outer part of the envelope mixes only some of the heavy elements, leaving the planet’s dilute core relatively unaffected (Fig. 1). In one fell swoop, this picture might therefore explain the dilute core detected by Juno3,4 and the global abundance of heavy elements in Jupiter’s atmosphere9. Liu and colleagues’ model should now be refined. In particular, it needs to be coupled to realistic scenarios for the formation of the Solar System8. Moreover, the mixing of heavy elements in the model should take into account heat and element diffusion — a process known as diffusive convection13. The results should also be compared quantitatively with constraints on Jupiter’s gravitational field from Juno1,2 and on the planet’s atmospheric composition obtained from spectroscopy10. The authors’ model indicates that giant impacts might frequently occur during planet formation. This possibility could account for the tilts of the planets in the Solar System. It might also explain how some giant exoplanets, known as hot Jupiters, have accreted more than 100 Earth masses of heavy elements15,16 — a feature that is extremely difficult to obtain from conventional formation models. Hot Jupiters are situated close to their host stars, in regions in which the gravitational pull of the star is extremely strong. As a result, these exoplanets might be able to collect planetary embryos efficiently through a series of giant impacts, rather than ejecting them, and thus increase their heavy-element content. Although giant planets have a fluid surface that cannot record traces of impact events, such planets hold clues to a violent past that led to the planetary systems observed today. The model proposed by Liu et al. enables present-day observations to be linked to the early days of the formation of the Solar System. Progress will come from an extension of studies such as this one to giant planets around the Sun and other stars. A continued exploration of the Solar System is crucial, particularly of Uranus and Neptune, which might be thought of as leftovers from a large population of massive planetary embryos in the early Solar System. The research, published in Nature, suggests that the impact is likely behind the puzzling gravitational readings from NASA's Juno spacecraft, which observes that Jupiter's core is less dense and more extended than expected. "This is puzzling," said Rice astronomer and study co-author Andrea Isella, in a statement. "It suggests that something happened that stirred up the core, and that's where the giant impact comes into play." The so-called "planetary embryo" that Jupiter may have swallowed could have happened within the first few million years of Jupiter's formation. "The only scenario that resulted in a core-density profile similar to what Juno measures today is a head-on impact with a planetary embryo about 10 times more massive than Earth," Shang-Fei Liu, the study's lead author, added in the statement. The team put together a video to indicate what the violent impact may have looked like. Company History: Considering its current annual sales of £3.7 billion, the Argyll Group's history is remarkably short. In 1987, just short of celebrating its tenth birthday, Argyll became the fourth-largest grocer in Britain when it purchased the 133 U.K. Safeway stores from their American parent, Safeway Stores Inc. The Safeway purchase gave Argyll a place in the upper echelon of British retailing and encouraged the company to begin the conversion of its largest Presto stores to the widely recognized and well-respected Safeway name. When its ambitious "Safeway 1990s" program is completed in March of 1991, Argyll will have built its stable of Safeway markets to around 320, comprising some 6.2 million square feet of sales area and contributing all but 20% of Group sales. In addition, Argyll will have some 300 Lo-Cost stores, discount stores that offer a limited range of groceries, and nearly 200 other stores (chiefly Prestos) in Scotland and northeastern England. James Gulliver is the man most responsible for Argyll's spectacular career. He was born in Cambeltown, Argyllshire (hence the Group's name), in 1930, and graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in engineering. He spent several years with the management consulting firm of Urwick Orr. In the mid-1960s, he joined the supermarket chain Fine Fare, then a division of Associated British Foods. He quickly became chief executive, and in a matter of seven years had more than tripled sales from £60 million to £200 million. One newspaper honored Gulliver as its "Young Businessman of the Year" for 1972, but he resigned shortly thereafter, along with Alistair Grant, then managing director at Fine Fare. Gulliver promptly bought a significant minority share Oriel Foods, a wholesaling firm doing about £10 million annually. Together with Grant and David Webster, an investment banker, Gulliver acquired management control of Oriel. Within a year, Oriel was bought out by RCA Inc., which was then trying to build a European food division. The three men stayed on, multiplying Oriel sales tenfold by 1977. That year Gulliver, Grant, and Webster left Oriel and formed James Gulliver Associates. After a first investment in a home improvements company, they began building their own grocery conglomerate, starting with the purchase of two food companies, Morgan Edwards and Louis C. Edwards, a Manchester meat business. By 1980 the new organization had adopted the name Argyll Foods and made significant inroads into the U.K. grocery trade. Over the next few years Argyll made several major acquisitions. Chief among these purchases were the 1981 acquisition of Oriel Foods for £19 million from RCA, which had apparently tired of the grocery business; and the June, 1982 purchase of Allied Suppliers from James Goldsmith, for £101 million. Between them, these acquisitions gave Argyll a nationwide range of operations, but one concentrated in northern England and Scotland. Presto, the most important of the new holdings, was a chain of 136 large grocery stores. Argyll also now owned Templeton, a line of 84 medium-sized supermarkets in Scotland; Liptons, with some 500 supermarkets in England and Wales; Lo-Cost, which, as its name suggests, occupied the lower end of the price spectrum; and Cordon Bleu, a 125-unit chain selling frozen foods. Along with some limited food wholesaling activity, Argyll also owned a biscuit, tea, and coffee manufacturer and an oil-refining business; both had been divested by 1987. In 1983 Argyll Foods was merged with Amalgamated Distilled Products (ADP), a liquor company Gulliver and his associates had controlled since 1979. ADP produced Scotch whisky and dark rum, and ran a 300-unit discount liquor chain called Liquorsave. It also owned Barton Brands, a U.S. liquor producer and distributor, which it had acquired in 1982. In 1985 Argyll began a major reorganization of its food division, realizing that if it was to become a major force in British groceries it would have to simplify and streamline its collected holdings, many of which were old, small, and out of touch with recent trends in marketing. The company therefore began converting all of its stores to either Presto or Lo-Cost, according to the demographics of each store. At the same time, the directors put a great deal of energy into lowering costs by taking advantage of the Group's greatly enhanced purchasing power and improving its distribution network. This reorganization, which was completed in 1986, put Argyll in a strong position to integrate its 1987 Safeway acquisition smoothly and efficiently. One reason for Argyll's interest in Safeway was the debacle of its 1986 bid for the Distillers Company, Britain's largest producer and distributor of Scotch and other liquor products. Gulliver hoped to use Argyll's relatively minor liquor business as a springboard from which to enter the liquor market in a much more dramatic fashion. In a carefully planned attack, Argyll made its bid for what Gulliver described as a once-great Scottish concern lately become moribund, offering to its shareholders a higher-than-market price for their stock and the prospect of fresh managerial expertise. Financial analysts heavily favored the proposed merger, which Gulliver and Alistair Grant hoped to consummate for reasons of Scots pride as well as profitability, but Distillers eventually rejected Argyll and accepted a possibly illegal bid from Guinness, the well-known British brewing conglomerate. The complex legal issues involved have not been fully sorted out, but it was clear that the failure of Gulliver's year-long struggle was a great disappointment to him. Though he remained at Argyll long enough to consummate the Safeway deal, he stepped down as chairman in September, 1988. Gulliver's successor, and the chief architect of the Safeway deal, was Alistair Grant. For many years Gulliver's closest adviser, Grant is an experienced food retailer who commands great respect in London financial circles, as evidenced by the case with which he placed the £621 million worth of new stock needed to pay for the Safeway stores. (The total price of £681 million was made up with a £60 million interest-free loan from seller to buyer.) It has been Grant's job to oversee the integration of Safeway and Argyll. The two companies were well matched: while Argyll's strength lay in the north, Safeway was predominantly a southern chain, though it had a significant business in Scotland. In addition, Safeway, despite its size and high per-unit profits, was widely believed to have a weak purchasing policy, an aspect of the business which Argyll had honed to a fine art. In general, the merger brought together the old and the new: Argyll's older and smaller stores, closer to the English tradition of the independent shopkeeper, with Safeway's more efficient and more fashionable stores. Argyll essentially has set out to capitalize on Safeway's appeal by adopting not only its name but its merchandising concepts as well. To that end, Argyll converted some 57 of its Presto stores to the Safeway logo in fiscal 1988 (and seven the year before), in addition to opening 19 entirely new Safeways. To supply its vast network of outlets in an efficient manner, Argyll continued to upgrade and consolidate its warehouse distribution centers, most recently adding a 510,000-square-foot facility in Bellshill, Scotland. In accordance with Argyll's policy of operating only in those markets in which it can be a major player, the Group sold off all of its liquor holdings, except its retail operation, Liquor-Save, after failing to capture Distillers. Argyll is now the third-largest grocer in the United Kingdom. Having taken military options off of the table, Obama and the West are relying heavily on the threat of a Russian recession to counter any further movements by Putin into Ukraine. There have been calls for Obama to deploy the strategic oil reserves as sanctions. Some commentators have even suggested that Obama discussed using this strategy during his visit to Saudi Arabia. Indeed, this strategy on its face appears to have the potential to dissuade Putin from being rash. From Timothy Ash at Standard Bank PLC: “What is crystal clear is that lower oil prices really hurt Russia. Indeed, oil prices are the Achilles heel for the Russian economy. Twelve years ago the Russian Federal budget balanced at USD22 per barrel for oil, now it is more like USD110. And I reckon a fall in the oil price to USD80 per barrel would already cause very significant pain to the Russian economy, balance sheet and its markets. At USD80 or lower, the Russian economy would head into deep recession, the budget and current accounts would run significant deficits, capital flight would accelerate markedly depleting FX reserves and putting hefty downside pressure on the rouble. You could indeed argue that a large part of Putin’s success over the past 13-14 years has related above all else to high oil and commodity prices – he has been fortunate in this respect. If oil and commodity prices fall Russia would be heavily exposed.” However, it is also abundantly clear that Putin is a dynamic player and not just a static actor. Putin is looking East. As mentioned in my previous posts the reasons for this are twofold. First, Russia’s regional influence depends more and more on China’s energy strategy. Second, Putin’s narrative is that Russia is the only “Great Power” willing to stand up to American Hegemony. Consequently, it appears that two large Petrodollar (i.e. deals denominated in oil, not USD) have been announced by Russia. First, a $20 Billion arms-for-oil deal with Iran. This substantially undermines the US’s negotiations with Iran on nuclear disarmament. As I’ve mentioned before, a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Crimea is that the post Soviet collapse world nuclear order is unraveling and paper deals no longer hold any credibility (as the collapse of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum is now the precedent). It also undermines the US’s policy with respect to Syria as Russian arms are boosting Assad’s fight against the rebels. Second, it appears that China may be embracing Russia. A major Russia-China gas deal may be announced in May. This would offset the isolation strategy that the West is using. In summary a new twist on the old quote: Without Ukraine Russia Is Just A Country, With Crimea and China Russia Is An Empire ——————————— In other news Russia paid lip service to the idea of deescalation along Ukraine’s border, but it doesn’t appear that there have been any significant troop movements away from the border. As a reminder there are approximately 40,000 Russian troops stationed on the Ukrainian border (with some reports of up to 100,000). NATO also continues to build up its forces along the Eastern Borders. Also – Ukraine has released a report detailing the the Russian FSB was involved in the February sniper attacks against civilians. On that date Ukraine will have its Presidential elections. If the elections are successful, the transitional government will be legitimized. It would strip Putin of a key element of his story line: that Russian-Ukrainians need to be protected because the people in power do not represent them. Consequently, legitimate elections would weaken Putin’s ability to stage an invasion into Ukraine. Here are the probabilities I’ve assigned to the outcomes of this crisis (an explanation follows): Imminent invasion of Ukraine by Russia (within a week): 20% Invasion of Ukraine prior to presidential elections (May 25th): 25% Invasion of Ukraine after presidential elections: 5% Deescalation: 50% There are a number of key factors as to why I think a Russo-Ukrainian war is likely: There have been reports of substantial Russian military buildups. Some reports suggest up to 100,000 troops have been stationed along Russia’s borders with Ukraine. March 29th Russian Army Movements Crimea’s infrastructure is heavily dependent on Southern and Eastern Ukraine. Southern and Eastern Ukraine also have a high proportion of Russian Speakers (between 20-60%; although the percentage of ethnic Russians is lower). Southern and Eastern Ukraine also supported the deposed administration. Ukraine Presidential Election Results 2010 South Western Ukraine borders Transnistria, a breakaway state from Moldova that supports unity with Russia. There are reports of up to 7,500 Russian military personnel already conducting war games there. Putin’s current narrative supports an invasion into Southern and Eastern Ukraine to build a land bridge to Crimea and this breakaway state.transnistria and other disputed areas in Eastern Europe and Central Asia By invading Southern and Eastern Ukraine, Putin would be able to completely land lock Ukraine allowing him to wield significant influence over the Ukrainian government. Putin is afraid of the democratic protests that occurred as a result of the Maidan Revolution. He needs a swift defeat in order to communicate to his opposition in Russia that similar protests in Russia would not work. Russian external communications have also been very bizarre recently. For example, Putin called Obama just yesterday to “Draw attention to Ukraine’s extremists” (note: they exist, but they’re not significantly influential). A few days prior a member of the Russian government sent a letter to Poland suggesting that Poland and Russia should split Ukraine into two – very strange and evident of the delusional thinking in Putin’s inner circles (tying into the broader theme of Eurasianism: http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/22760-brown-is-the-new-black ). Finally Putin’s speech on the Crimean annexation alluded to larger plans (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26652058). REPORT THIS AD The list of reasons why I think Putin will not invade Ukraine is shorter but no less convincing: I have no doubt that Putin would already have invaded Southern and Eastern Ukraine had it not been for Chinese ambivalence on the matter. As The Economist recently pointed out “The precedent of secession is anathema, because of Tibet; the principle of unification is sacrosanct, because of Taiwan.” Russia has been unable to rely on China as an ally as it did during the Syrian crisis. This is fairly substantial since China is breaking Russia’s control over the gas basins of Central Asia systematically and ruthlessly and this may accelerate as a result of the Crimean crisis. Turkmenistan’s gas used to flow North, hostage to prices set by Gazprom. It now flows East. The politics are poignantly exposed in Wikileaks cables from Central Asia. A British diplomat is cited in a 2010 dispatch describing the “Chinese commercial colonization” of the region, saying Russia was “painfully” watching its energy domination in Central Asia slip away. To a lesser extent, US, EU and other sanctions are having effects. The US and EU have imposed targeted sanctions on Putin’s inner circle of advisers and some key banks. Frankly the level of sanction is significantly below what is necessary to deter Putin. There have been some targeted sanctions against Putin’s inner circle and key banks that house funds for very high net worth individuals and politicos. Russia has also been expelled from the G7 (formerly the G8). The West has been lucky that Russia’s economy has been struggling recently. This has multiplied the effect of the sanctions. The World Bank is currently predicting Russia’s economy to grow only 1.1% in 2014, down from 2.2% as previously predicted. If the situation intensifies Russia’s economy could shrink by 1.8% (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/03/26/uk-russia-economy-worldbank-idUKBREA2P0X420140326). Kerry (American Secretary of State) and Lazarov (Russian Foreign Minister) are scheduled to meet tomorrow. I suspect that Lazarov will try to hype Putin’s case and Kerry will rebuke him. Note that I’ve also provided a lower probability for an imminent invasion, compared to a general invasion before May 25th. But weren’t the cafes of Warsaw full the night before the Germans invaded on September 1, 1939, or Lviv two weeks later when the Soviets invaded Western Ukraine? I suspect they were, even though there was ample objective evidence at the time that an invasion could happen at any moment, – and it did. The 55-year-old model posted a throwback shot to her Instagram account on Tuesday, showing off her svelte physique in a printed string bikini and sun hat while sharing a few of her beauty and wellness secrets with her followers.
