The court continued, saying: “Realizing the enormity of her error, Shirilla argued on appeal that the 365-day clock did not start until the transcript of a probable cause hearing in the juvenile court was filed in the direct appeal on December 15, 2023 ... The Eighth District Court of Appeals unanimously, and correctly, rejected this argument.” On July 6, her lawyers filed a motion asking the Ohio Supreme Court to review her appeals, which the court rejected. Silver St. Cloud comes back into Bruce's life when Col. Brass lays siege to Gotham. Brass has come to realize that he has come to crossroads of his life and now he must decide what to do with his final days as a cold blooded warrior. His first item of business is to return to Gotham and interact with Bruce Wayne's old flame Silver while his foot soldiers terrorize the streets of Gotham by instigating an all out gang war. Brass wants Silver's real estate connections in order to establish a convention in Gotham. The convention will serve as Brass' new base of operations and as a recruiting center for any mercenaries who want to join Brass' siege on Gotham. Brass presents the mercenaries with an enterprising agenda to steal from Gotham as they instigate a citywide gang war which will keep Gotham PD and the Batman distracted. Brass gives Priest, his second in command, a special task to starting the gang war. Priest must procure all ledgers and books that dictate the mob's illegitimate gains. One book keeper in particular begged for his life but Priest viewed the book keeper with disgust because he finds that a man defines himself when he dies. Priest offers "a brave death" to all of his enemies and asks the book keeper to maintain some form of dignity as he placed a grenade in the book keeper's mouth. As the book keeper prepared for the end, he noticed Priest's buck knife was in reach. Priest noticed what the book keeper was looking at and taunted him by goading him to take the knife. The book keeper began to sweat with tension but in the end, he cowered on the floor and Priest pulled the pin. The book keeper's office was engulfed by a fiery explosion. Brass uses his knowledge of Old Gotham to devise a shipping route to the convention center thereby enabling his hired guns to secretly gain access to the latest advancements of artillery and explosives. The Spur Line became a forgotten railway according to the city's plans but Brass' memories of Old Gotham are as fresh as they were over 60 years ago. Brass reaches the convention center to make sure his operation is kept a secret from Silver who thinks she is organizing a security advancements expo. Brass arrives to meet with Silver and asks her to take the rest of the day off for all her hard work as an arms convention publicist. Silver agrees but just as she was making her way to the lobby, she overhears one of Brass' thugs talking about the how Spur Line is a good cover. Silver continues to listen to the conversation until she is discovered by other members of Brass' squad. They chase Silver to the lobby where she tries to call the night watchman for help but it turns out to be Brass. Silver reacts quickly by activating the silent alarm but ends getting stabbed by Brass with an ice pick he stole from a local thug that his men killed earlier. Fortunately, Brass didn't puncture any crucial arteries and Silver was in a stable condition when she went Gotham Mercy Hospital. Bruce arrives on the scene after Silver's ambulance drives off. As Batman, Bruce investigates the inner workings of this supposed convention. He disarms to guards who were working for Brass and discovers that the basement of the convention has a secret passage that leads to the Spur Line. Batman deduces that the Spur Line must be the method that the gun runners are using to get around Gotham without being detected. Bruce also figures that the gun runners are the orchestrators behind the gang war but he doesn't know what the end game is if the gang war is a diversion. Meanwhile, Brass gives the order to lay siege to Gotham by destroying the financial district of Gotham such as Diamond Exchange and Gotham's First National Bank. Batman goes to intercede and stem the blood shed. Batman makes quick work of Brass' mercenaries and learns a few things by interrogating one of the mercenaries. It turns out Brass supplied the rival gangs with new artillery after instigating the gang war as a distraction for the police and the Batman. However, Batman finds this latest attack to be sloppy on Brass' part because Brass would have presumed that one of his mercenaries might be caught during the siege and could divulge his involvement with the gang war or gun running. Unfortunately, things start to make sense for Bruce when he receives a distress call from Alfred. Batman arrives to immobilize one member of Brass' squad who was securing the grounds while Alfred takes on another squad member in the basement. Brass and another member of his squad make their way to the lower foundations of Wayne Manor by using explosives. Batman enters Wayne Manor through the library but he comes under attack by Priest. Priest proves to be a formidable combatant for Batman but Bruce's usage of theatricality trips up Priest. Batman finally puts an end to Priest by throwing him out a window. Batman then makes his way to the cave to put an end to Brass. Brass decides to shoot his squad member because she refused to be involved in his revenge plot against the Waynes. Brass is then taken by surprise when Batman throws a batarang which knocks the gun out of Brass' hand. Batman demands to know why Brass has a vendetta against the Waynes. Brass explains his past relation with Bruce's grandfather and how he figured out Batman's secret identity. Brass remembers Thomas' bat costume during the Halloween gala that he tried to crash. Brass immediately put two and two together when the Batman was first sighted. Brass confesses that he decided to take his revenge on the Wayne family now because his time on this Earth has reached its pinnacle. The cancer in Brass' body has begun to spread and he refuses to go down without taking the Wayne legacy with him. Brass and Batman combat each other but Bruce's vigor overpowers Brass. Unfortunately, Priest intervenes and tries to defeat Bruce. Bruce gives Priest a second serving of pain but fails to stop Brass from committing suicide. Brass reveals that he has explosions strapped to him and activates the detonator in the hopes of taking Wayne Manor down with him. The magnitude of the explosion incinerates Brass and the entire foundation begins to tremble. Bruce and Priest are knocked off a cliff side in the caverns. Bruce manages to grapple to safety but Priest falls to his death when his body hit the rocky river bank beneath the caverns. In the end, the strong foundation within the Batcave kept Wayne Manor standing but Bruce was still unable to reconcile his rocky relationship with Silver St, Cloud. After Baphomet's appearance in Gotham she has reentered Bruce's life, appearing one morning in the manor. She is now a widow and hasn't resumed her social life out of respect for her dead husband. She confesses to Bruce that he is the last man she has been with and both agree to a date the next day at the same hour. They meet again and they go to a private island owned by Silver's family south of Miami, here she assures Bruce that she has changed over the years, because now she can accept his double life, and wants to try again with him. They continue to meet during the days on the island for many weeks, until Bruce found out that Aquaman knew they were on the island. After Arthur found that Bruce was on the island they dated in the Batcave, where Silver read many of the bat-journals and stole one without Bruce noticing it. Later they went skiing in Aspen, where they spent a night away from Gotham leaving Tim and Baphomet to fill in for him.While on the JLA Watchtower, after a visit to the Fortress of Solitude, Bruce proposed to Silver and she accepted. When she was going back home with Alfred, Bruce stopped the car thinking that Silver might be a robot. After he verified she was human, he apologized and Silver forgave him, saying that she knew that in his world there couldn't be no trust but he could trust her. The next morning, before breakfast, Bruce introduced her to Baphomet who turn out to be Onomatopoeia and he cut her throat with a knife. She was eventually found and taken in by the wealthy Charles Knight who acted as her guardian. He named the girl Natasha but he never filed for a formal adoption because he feared the courts would never approve of a single man raising a teenage female plus Charles had many skeletons in closet. Charles' fortune was based on illegal dealings as a criminal gang lord. Regardless, Charles acted as Natasha's adoptive father and Natasha was given a life of luxury. Charles was later murdered by a rival gang and Natasha finally learned the truth about how her lifestyle was made possible by criminal activity. At Charles' funeral, Natasha met Anton Knight, Charles only son. Anton had just returned from Asia after learning various forms of martial arts. Anton was well aware of his father's crooked life and even embrace it for his own purposes. In as short time, Anton and Natasha grew to love each other. Natasha used Charles' inheritance to put herself through college and indulged her passion in astronomy. On her graduation night, she went to work at Gotham City Astronomical Observatory. As she studied the properties of stellar light in a vacuum, Natasha became exposed to laser radiation. The exposure had an adverse effect on Natasha. The radiation leached her skin of pigmentation leaving her with a chalky white physique and making her sensitive to light. Natasha depleted her father's inheritance while treating and/ or reversing her condition with expensive medical equipment. Natasha then looked to the Wayne Foundation for help but Anton refused to let the foundation's bureaucrats dither with the severity of his lover's affliction. Nocturna (Br Nocturna (Br Anton and Natasha finally agreed that in order to maintain their lifestyle, they would have to take up burglary. Anton took on the persona of the Night-Thief during his nighttime raids while Natasha operated behind the scenes as "Nocturna", Mistress of the Night. On some occasions, Nocturna would accompany Night-Thief during his heists. She would come equipped with large star shaped earrings that she could use as throwing stars, a faux pearl necklace that contained knockout gas, a stiletto hairpin and a belt that can become a razor sharp whip. The couple's burglaries were met with success and Nocturna became so emboldened that she decided to exact revenge on the Wayne Foundation. Nocturna started off by interacting with Bruce Wayne during a social function. Bruce was so enchanted by Nocturna that he failed to acknowledge Night Thief's stealthy entrance into the event. Night-Thief then makes his presence known by making the room go completely dark and robs the patrons of all of their belongings. Fortunately, Bruce was also robbed but his belongings came with a tracer. As the Batman, Bruce tracked the Night-Thief back to the Knight estate where he encountered Nocturna again. Nocturna admitted to the robbery and Night-Thief being her partner in crime. She explains her motives for taking up crime to Batman then she removes a compact makeup kit from her purse. As Nocturna opened the compact, she blew the powder into Batman's face and the knockout powder rendered Batman unconscious. When Batman woke up, he discovered he was being held captive at the observatory. As Night-Thief came closer to the Batman with his buck knife, Batman managed to free himself from his restraints. Batman subdued Anton with his superior fighting skills but Natasha got away. During her escape, Natasha encounters Jason Todd who recently became estranged from Batman. Natasha took it upon herself to be the mother figure that Jason never had. Nocturna's influence over Jason went as far as family court. Nocturna petitioned to take full custody of Jason from Bruce Wayne but she was willing to drop custody suit if Bruce would be willing to marry her. During the custody hearing, Bruce argued that Nocturna was unfit to be Jason's guardian because she and Night-Thief were responsible for a string of thefts. Unfortunately, Hamilton Hill was still mayor after the Rupert Thorne scandal with Dr. Phosphorus. Hill was holding a grudge against Bruce Wayne because Bruce was backing another candidate for mayor so he took it upon himself to have the family court judge award full custody of Jason Todd to Nocturna. To make matters worse, Night-Thief testified in open court that Nocturna was never aware of the thefts thus absolving her of any involvement with the burglaries. Nocturna was awarded custody of Jason and Bruce lost his ward. Nocturna thanked Anton for his testimony but decided to let him rot in prison while she continues her criminal activity with a new cohort. Nocturna's new partner in crime was Sturges Hellstrom whom she dubbed Nightshade. Her latest ploy for committing robberies was hosting horror themed parties at any socialite's home while Nightshade would case the joint and learn the layout. Once the scheme had run its course with success, Nocturna decided to call it quits. Meanwhile, a vengeful Night-Thief is released from prison and believes his time in prison has changed him in an evolutionary way. He starts off by killing his replacement Nightshade. Anton renamed himself as the Nightslayer and Nocturna reluctantly welcomed Anton with open arms. Natasha started manufacturing a perfume/ narcotic that she could then sell and make millions. Her first subject to test out the potency of the perfume was none other than Batman. When Batman became enthralled with Nocturna and Nocturna didn't mind the attraction, Anton took it upon himself to eliminate the Batman. Anton stabbed Batman but Nocturna saved the Batman by shooting Anton. Despite his wound, Anton was able to escape and now he harbors a vengeful hatred for Nocturna. For a good while, things were settling down until Mad Hatter and Night-Thief kidnapped Nocturna and Jason. Anton promised the Hatter that he could have Nocturna's stolen loot from her illicit enterprises while Anton used his kidnapped victims to lure the Batman. The Batman arrived and subdued the Mad Hatter but Anton got off a shot that grazed the Batman's cowl. With Batman disorientated, Anton decided to immobilize the Batman and take on his persona as the Batman in order to smear his reputation by committing robberies. Fortunately, Nocturna and Jason freed themselves as well as the Batman and then went after Anton. Nocturna and Jason were able to defeat Anton but when Nocturna openly confessed that she would give up her criminal career, a child welfare representative overheard the conversation. A motion to sever Nocturna's custody over Jason was submitted to family court and Jason was eventually put back into Bruce's safekeeping. At the same time, Bruce was able to expose Mayor Hill's corruption at city hall and his manipulation during the custody trial for Jason. Nocturna eluded the police after Anton was captured and retreated to her observatory with grief. She no longer had Jason so she took solace by observing the star and noticed the red skies. It seems the red skies were a precursor to the impending Crisis of Infinite Earths but Nocturna just admired the skies for what they were. Batman tracked down Nocturna to the observatory and offered his sincerest sympathies for her loss. Nocturna passionately embraced Batman even though she knew that they followed different paths and that would always cause friction between them. Unfortunately, Catwoman was tailing the Batman because she wanted to get answers as to why the Batman was committing robberies. Selina witnessed the kiss that Nocturna and Batman shared. Catwoman knocks out the Batman and enters into a cat fight with Nocturna. Both women end up injured and when Batman comes to, he rushes both women to Gotham General Hospital. Anton manages to escape his transport to Blackgate and overhears that Nocturna was sent to the hospital. At the hospital, Jason comforts Nocturna by her bedside while Catwoman rests up in the next room. All of sudden, Anton comes crashing into Nocturna's room and delivers a heavy blow to Jason. Nocturna lashes out at Anton for hurting her surrogate son. Catwoman is awoken by the excitement in the next room and jumps to her feet. Selina enters Nocturna's room and notices the window leading outside has been shattered. She looks out and sees from afar Anton loading Jason and Nocturna into a van. Batman arrives on the scene and Selina tells him that they will work together for Jason's sake. Anton heads to Nocturna's beloved observatory to end his lovesick torment. Nocturna pleads with Anton to listen to reason but Anton refuses to listen to her pleas and proceeds by stabbing her. In a fit of rage, Jason breaks free of his bonds and attacks Anton. At the same time, Batman and Catwoman come swooping into the observatory thanks to Batman's glider. Batman and Catwoman contend with Anton while Jason gets Nocturna to safety. Jason then notices Nocturna's hot air balloon is nearby. He places Nocturna in the hot air balloon and loosens the rope so she can float to safety. Batman gets stabbed by Night Slayer and Catwoman enters the fray alone. The fight between Catwoman and Night Slayer takes place near the giant telescope in the observatory. Jason pulls back the lever that lowers the telescope. The giant telescope comes crashing down on the Night Slayer thus knocking him out for the count. As for Nocturna, the cosmic storm that was brewing from the red skies, surrounds her hot air balloon. Within an instant, lightening hits the hot air balloon and Jason watches in horror as the hot air ballon comes crashing down to the coastline. Batman, Catwoman and Jason search the coastline for Nocturna's body but found no trace. It's possible that the cosmic storm engulfed Nocturna and when the Crisis of Infinite Earths was settled, Nocturna was given a new lease on life as Natalia Mitternacht. I don't see an end to this.' Mr Ferguson said the ordeal had taken a heavy toll on his mental health. He said: 'There are some days when it just overwhelms. I'm stuck. 'It gets very, very dark. 'I've made promises to my kids I'm not going to do anything stupid... doing something seriously stupid doesn't affect me anymore. It hurts everybody else.' Mr Ferguson has lived in the UAE for around 20 years and previously worked with Emirates Airlines before establishing Aviation Assets Middle East, a company that helps airlines buy, sell and return aircraft and source spare parts. He said the business was already struggling before a series of health problems left him unable to work as much as he needed and exhausted his savings. His passport was also seized as part of court proceedings relating to company debts, he previously said. Without a passport, he says he cannot obtain a new visa. Without a visa, he cannot obtain a UAE identity card, open a bank account or legally work, leaving him unable to rebuild his finances or leave the country. A GoFundMe appeal initially offered hope, with generous donations helping him get by. But Mr Ferguson said his daughter's bank account was subsequently closed, leaving her unable to access £300 of the money raised. He was previously offered an apartment through his daughter's friends who used to live in Dubai, but had to move out after three months. He now sleeps on a settee in the lounge of a three-bedroom apartment, where six women share the bedrooms and the owner rescues cats. While he said the arrangement was far from ideal, Mr Ferguson stressed he remained grateful for 'the roof and the kindness' he had been shown. Mr Ferguson said at least 15 cats are around him every night, with their playing and fighting leaving him struggling to sleep. 'I used to like cats. I'm not as keen on them now,' he joked. With no internet connection in the apartment he goes to Dunkin' Donuts to get online while trying to secure remote work. Mr Ferguson is drawing on his aviation contacts and seeking opportunities to broker aircraft and components, hoping to earn his way out of debt. But he said he has been pursuing that hope for six or seven months without the results he needs. The two opportunities he is waiting on involve a brokerage deal and an investor. He said he had also spoken to lawyers about help with his debts and fines, but could not afford the fees they requested. If the business opportunities fail, he plans to travel to the airport, where he says the immigration services are based, and hand himself in. His children continue to support him, although they have not been able to visit recently. Both his sons visited last year, but he said his daughters have not been out for three years.

Christa Pike, now 50, beat and tortured to death 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer alongside her then boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp. Pike, who was aged 18 at the time, bragged about the murder, according to residents at the training camp for troubled teenagers where it took place. She was sentenced to death, while her ex-boyfriend was handed a life sentence with the future possibility of parole. The 50-year-old has requested her execution – to be administered by lethal injection – to be performed by an all female team. Authorities in Tennessee have said they are aiming for Pike to be transferred to the execution prison by female guards, but cannot make any guarantees, the BBC reported. Colleen’s mother, May Martinez, said she wanted the execution to happen swiftly so her daughter can ‘finally can be resting’ and even expressed her wish that Pike suffer before her death. ‘She did the crime. I think she should pay for it’, she told Knoxville radio station. However Pike’s case continues to be fought by her legal representatives, who claim she would not have received a death sentence had she been found guilty of the same crime as a teenager today. Pike was also neglected and sexually abused as a child, with some details about her youth now being shared by her lawyers they believe jurors were not able to consider. Dr Bethany Brand, another psychologist who studied Pike’s case in 2023, said her case was rare because of the large number of people who abused her when they had a responsibility to protect her. She said that Pike’s traumatic childhood helped to explain why she felt threatened by Colleen and was unable to control her emotions when she killed the young woman. AI alignment is the effort to make sure an AI system reliably does what humans intend it to do. That sounds straightforward until the system becomes highly capable and operates in situations its developers did not anticipate. Imagine asking an AI agent to “solve a problem as quickly as possible”. A human might interpret that instruction within obvious social and ethical boundaries. Recent incidents involving AI agents attempting to hack systems during cybersecurity testing have made this problem less abstract. The issue is not necessarily that the system “wanted” to cause harm. And the more capable the system becomes, the harder alignment could become if humans cannot anticipate all the strategies it might use. So, How Could AI Actually Cause Catastrophic Harm? One possibility is deliberate misuse is people increasingly using capable AI to develop cyberattacks, biological threats, weapons or sophisticated disinformation. Another involves autonomous systems. AI agents with access to computers and networks could potentially exploit vulnerabilities or cause damage through human negligence or inadequate safeguards. Then there is the more speculative scenario: a highly capable AI pursuing an objective that conflicts with human interests while possessing enough autonomy and access to resist attempts to stop it. Researchers worry about a combination of these factors — capability, autonomy, access and poor alignment — rather than simply an AI becoming “evil”. Are We Building AI Faster Than We Can Control It? OpenAI called 2025 “the year of the AI agent.” Over 57% of enterprises were running AI agents in production by mid-2026. Gartner projects that 40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific agents by end of 2026, up from fewer than 5% in 2025. This shows an eight-fold increase in one year. On the capability front, AI systems have made striking progress on self-replication tasks. Success rates rose from below 5% in 2023 to more than 60% in 2025 — a roughly 12-fold increase on a metric researchers use to assess how close AI may be to operating with less human oversight. The governance challenge is equally significant. About 91% of organisations reportedly only find out what an AI agent has done after the action has already been carried out, highlighting how difficult it can be to monitor autonomous systems in real time. Between October 2025 and January 2026, the longest AI-agent sessions nearly doubled, rising from less than 25 minutes to more than 45 minutes at the 99.9th percentile. The increase was gradual across model releases, suggesting that the change was driven less by sudden leaps in capability and more by users becoming comfortable trusting AI agents with increasingly complex tasks. But that growing trust is running ahead of safeguards. Nearly 88% of organisations have reported an AI-related security incident, while only about 22% treat AI agents as entities with their own formal identities and access controls. The result is a widening gap: people are giving AI systems more responsibility, and those systems are taking increasingly real-world actions, but most organisations still lack clear rules governing what those agents can access or do. That risk is not entirely theoretical. In February 2026, Microsoft confirmed that a bug in 365 Copilot Chat allowed the AI assistant to summarise confidential emails for weeks, bypassing enterprise data-loss prevention policies and sensitivity labels designed to restrict access. The issue affected emails stored in users’ Sent Items and Drafts folders across Microsoft’s enterprise customer base. The financial consequences can also be significant. An Ernst & Young survey found that 64% of companies with annual revenue above $1 billion had lost more than $1 million because of AI failures. As AI systems become more capable and are given greater autonomy, the challenge will be ensuring that governance and security measures keep pace. Gartner has predicted that by 2027, 40% of enterprises could scale back or abandon autonomous AI agents after governance weaknesses are exposed by incidents in production.
