While the technology demonstration may appear modest in scale, its implications are far-reaching. Scientists hope the experiment will help close a long-standing observational gap in gamma-ray astronomy, potentially improving future studies of gamma-ray bursts, active galaxies powered by supermassive black holes, and some of the most energetic phenomena ever observed in the cosmos. They are produced by extreme cosmic environments, including powerful stellar explosions, intense solar activity, and violent collisions occurring billions of light-years away. Detecting these signals is one of the most effective ways to investigate the universe’s most energetic processes, yet certain energy ranges remain difficult to study with existing instruments. AstroPix was designed specifically to address part of that challenge. The detectors are capable of measuring gamma rays between 20,000 and 700,000 electron volts, a range that extends far beyond visible light. Scientists are particularly interested in improving sensitivity around the region between 500,000 and 1 million electron volts, where many gamma-ray bursts emit some of their strongest radiation. This energy range is also expected to contain valuable information about distant active galaxies powered by enormous black holes. By eventually combining multiple AstroPix detectors into larger instruments, researchers could create future observatories capable of examining these events with far greater precision. Such advances would provide new clues about how matter behaves under extreme conditions and how some of the universe’s most powerful engines generate enormous amounts of energy. Each AstroPix chip has four silicon pixel gamma-ray detectors. Each of these detectors incorporates 1,225 pixels. Many demonstrations are limited to balloon flights or sounding rockets, which provide only brief exposure to space-like conditions. AstroPix is receiving a far more valuable opportunity: an extended test aboard an orbital mission. “The Fly Foundational Robots spacecraft is also a technology demonstration, so the projects were a good fit for each other,” said Dan Violette, an AstroPix team member and post-doctoral fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We need to thoroughly test AstroPix’s performance before we can use the sensors in future science missions. We’ve flown comparable technologies on a scientific balloon mission, and the current prototype eventually will be part of a sounding rocket payload. Many of those flight opportunities only reach near space, though. It’s not often that technology demonstrations like ours can find a ride into orbit.” The orbital environment will allow engineers to evaluate detector performance under realistic operating conditions while collecting valuable scientific data. The experience gained from this mission could influence the design of future gamma-ray observatories and determine whether AstroPix becomes part of larger scientific spacecraft later in the decade. For technology developers, orbital validation is often the difference between a promising prototype and a mission-ready instrument. The payload will not simply ride into space; it will become part of a broader robotic servicing demonstration designed to showcase how spacecraft components can be moved and replaced while in orbit. A robotic arm supplied by Rocket Lab Robotics will reposition the Orbital Replacement Unit during flight before AstroPix begins collecting data. The concept reflects a growing interest across the space industry in developing spacecraft that can be upgraded rather than replaced entirely. Such capabilities could dramatically extend mission lifetimes and reduce operational costs. Each AstroPix chip contains four silicon gamma-ray detectors, and every detector includes 1,225 individual pixels. The architecture resembles imaging sensors used in smartphones, though it is optimized for detecting high-energy radiation rather than visible light. The payload includes all supporting electronics needed for power distribution, data collection, and communications while operating in orbit. NASA’s Broader Goal: Building Upgradeable Spacecraft The mission is not only about astronomy. It also serves as a testbed for technologies that could reshape how future satellites are maintained and improved after launch. “The unit already had the volume, power, and data needed to support the AstroPix team’s design,” said Bo Naasz, senior technical lead, In-space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing in the Space Technology Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “One of our major goals with Fly Foundational Robots is to demonstrate robotic changeout of payloads in orbit, enabling upgrades or improvements to satellites and space instruments at a fraction of the cost of a full mission. Allowing AstroPix to complete its own technology demonstration in orbit is a bonus.” As highlighted by NASA, the ability to replace instruments in space could significantly alter the economics of exploration and scientific research. Rather than launching entirely new missions whenever better technology becomes available, future spacecraft could receive upgraded components through robotic servicing operations. That approach could accelerate innovation while reducing costs for both scientific and commercial missions. Daily Galaxy 77.6K Followers Scientists use supercomputer simulations to investigate what came before the big bang Story by Lydia Amazouz • 9h • 4 min read Credit: Shutterstock | The Daily Galaxy --Great Discoveries Channel Credit: Shutterstock | The Daily Galaxy --Great Discoveries Channel © Daily Galaxy CA For decades, one of the biggest questions in cosmology has remained frustratingly out of reach: what, if anything, existed before the Big Bang? Now, researchers are using advanced computational techniques based on Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity to investigate regions of cosmic history that were once considered inaccessible. A major review published in Living Reviews in Relativity highlights how numerical relativity is becoming a powerful tool for probing the universe’s earliest moments and testing ideas that previously existed largely in the realm of speculation. Why The Earliest Universe Has Been So Difficult To Study The challenge begins with a fundamental limitation in modern cosmology. When scientists use Einstein’s equations to trace the universe backward in time, they eventually encounter a singularity, a point where density, temperature, and curvature become effectively infinite. At that boundary, the mathematical framework that successfully describes planets, stars, galaxies, and black holes stops providing meaningful answers. As a result, questions surrounding the origin of the universe have often remained beyond the reach of direct scientific testing. Traditional cosmological models simplify the universe by assuming it is smooth and uniform on large scales. This approach has been remarkably successful in explaining many observations, including the large-scale structure of the cosmos and the properties of the cosmic microwave background. Yet conditions in the very early universe were likely far more chaotic. Gravity may have been operating in environments filled with extreme density fluctuations, violent distortions of spacetime, and highly uneven distributions of matter. Under such circumstances, the standard approximations begin to break down, leaving researchers with incomplete tools for understanding what truly happened near the beginning of cosmic history. That limitation has fueled decades of debate over competing theories, including cosmic inflation, cyclic universes, bouncing cosmologies, and other models attempting to explain how the universe emerged into its current state. Credit: Living Reviews in Relativity Credit: Living Reviews in Relativity © Daily Galaxy CA How Numerical Relativity Is Opening New Territory The growing field of numerical relativity offers a way forward. Rather than relying solely on equations that can be solved analytically, researchers use powerful computers to approximate solutions in situations that are too complex for conventional mathematics. This technique has already transformed astrophysics by helping scientists model black hole mergers and predict the gravitational wave signals later detected by observatories such as LIGO. Related video: Is our world real or is something else running the simulation? (Sciencephile the AI) Sciencephile the AI Is our world real or is something else running the simulation? Current Time 0:00 / Duration 4:51 0 View on Watch View on Watch The same computational strategy is now being applied to cosmology. Instead of assuming perfect symmetry, scientists can simulate highly irregular universes and observe how they evolve under the full framework of Einstein’s theory. This allows researchers to examine whether proposed models of the early universe remain stable under realistic conditions or collapse when subjected to the complexities of gravity. As researcher David Lim explains, “You can search around the lamppost, but you can’t go far beyond the lamppost, where it’s dark—you just can’t solve those equations. Numerical relativity allows you to explore regions away from the lamppost.” That analogy captures a central goal of the field. Scientists have long been able to investigate the parts of cosmology illuminated by manageable mathematics. Numerical relativity is enabling them to move beyond those limits and explore regions that were previously hidden from scientific inquiry. We divide our review into work that focuses on the pre-Big Bang phase, which covers the period up to the end of inflation on this diagram. The post-Big Bang phase covers non-perturbative dynamics from the end of inflation to the emission of the CMB. The late-universe phase is the remainder of the diagram, which contains the standard cosmological history. Credit: Living Reviews in Relativity We divide our review into work that focuses on the pre-Big Bang phase, which covers the period up to the end of inflation on this diagram. The late-universe phase is the remainder of the diagram, which contains the standard cosmological history. Credit: Living Reviews in Relativity © Daily Galaxy CA Testing Ideas About A Universe Before The Big Bang One of the most intriguing possibilities involves theories suggesting thatthe Big Bang was not the absolute beginning of everything. Some models propose that the universe experiences recurring cycles of contraction and expansion. Others suggest that a previous cosmic phase collapsed before rebounding into the expanding universe observed today. These concepts have often faced a major obstacle: proving whether they can actually work under realistic physical conditions. A theory may appear elegant on paper while failing when gravity, inhomogeneities, and relativistic effects are fully included. Numerical relativity provides a way to perform those tests. According to the review published inLiving Reviews in Relativity, these simulations may help determine whether bounce scenarios remain mathematically stable, whether inflation can emerge naturally from chaotic initial conditions, and whether alternative origin theories leave observable signatures that astronomers could eventually detect. Researchers are also using these methods to investigate phenomena such as cosmic strings, primordial black holes, bubble collisions, and the turbulent period known as preheating that may have followed cosmic inflation. Many of these processes could leave traces in gravitational waves or subtle patterns within the cosmic microwave background, creating potential opportunities for future observational tests. Bridging Two Scientific Communities The review highlights another challenge beyond the technical aspects of the simulations themselves. Historically, cosmologists and numerical relativists have often worked in separate research communities despite sharing common interests in understanding gravity and cosmic evolution. The authors argue that stronger collaboration between these fields could accelerate progress on some of cosmology’s deepest mysteries. Numerical relativists possess expertise in solving Einstein’s equations under extreme conditions, while cosmologists bring detailed knowledge of observational data and theoretical models describing the universe. Lim emphasized the importance of building that connection. “We hope to actually develop that overlap between cosmology and numerical relativity so that numerical relativists who are interested in using their techniques to explore cosmological problems can go ahead and do it,” says Lim. “And cosmologists who are interested in solving some of the questions they cannot solve, can use numerical relativity.” Such collaboration may prove essential as simulations become increasingly sophisticated and computational resources continue to expand. The ability to combine theoretical predictions with observational evidence could help transform long-standing philosophical questions into scientifically testable hypotheses. American History >The Assassination of JFK >Beverly Oliver ▼ Primary Sources ▼ Beverly Oliver Beverly Oliver Beverly Oliver was born in 1946. She worked as a dancer at the Colony Club. It was next to the Carousel Club (owned by Jack Ruby). Oliver claims she was standing on the south side of Elm Street when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. She was therefore one of the closest witnesses to the shot that killed Kennedy. She filmed the motorcade with a Super-8 Yashica movie camera but claimed that it was taken away by a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent on 25th November and she never saw it again. Oliver later identified Regis Kennedy as the FBI agent who took the film from her. However, Kennedy was in New Orleans at that time interviewing Jack Martin. Oliver left Dallas soon after the assassination and went into hiding (Oliver claimed she feared she would be murdered if she remained in the city). In 1970 Oliver married the mobster George McGann. Soon afterwards he was murdered by fellow gangsters. Later Oliver gave an interview to Gary Mack. She claimed that in 1963 she was a regular visitor to the Carousel Club and that Jack Ruby introduced her to Lee Harvey Oswald. Oliver also claimed to have seen David Ferrie and Jack Lawrence in the club. Beverly Oliver is marked with an arrow (22nd November, 1963) Beverly Oliver is marked with an arrow (22nd November, 1963) By John Simkin (john@spartacus-educational.com) © September 1997 (updated January 2020). ▲ Main Article ▲ Primary and Secondary Sources (1) John McAdams, Beverly Oliver: Babushka Babe? Or Bamboozling the Buffs? (2002) One of the enigmatic figures in Dealey Plaza in the moments when John Kennedy was murdered was "The Babushka Lady," so named because she wore a scarf much like a Russian grandmother would wear. She appears to be filming the motorcade, perhaps with an amateur movie camera, but she did not identify herself to law enforcement on the day of the assassination. And in the days and weeks following the assassination, no person turned up claiming to be her, and no film shot from her position was discovered. In 1970 a woman named Beverly Oliver came forward, and in interviews with researcher J. Gary Shaw, claimed to have been the Babushka Lady. She was a dancer and singer (although apparently not a stripper) at the Colony Club, a strip joint that competed with Jack Ruby's Carousel Club. She claims to have spent considerable time in the Carousel Club, and to have known Jack Ruby well. Over the years, her story has been elaborated to include many elements which, if true, imply a conspiracy to murder Kennedy. (2) Ian Griggs, Where Were You When the President Was Shot, Beverly? (May, 1999) One of the most frequently asked questions regarding witnesses to the Kennedy assassination concerns a mysterious young woman who became known as The Babushka Lady. She can be seen clearly on the Zapruder film and also on various other movie films and still photographs taken in Dealey Plaza on 22nd November 1963. She was one of the few witnesses who was not immediately identified - thus the rather odd nickname which she acquired due to the 'babushka' or triangular headscarf which she was wearing that day. The question which The Babushka Lady provokes has become much more than just: "Who is she?" It has become much more positive: "Are The Babushka Lady and Beverly Oliver one and the same person?" Undoubtedly, the most important aspect of The Babushka Lady is the fact that she appears to be filming the motorcade. Her position on the south side of Elm Street close to eyewitnesses Charles Brehm, Jean Hill, Mary Moorman, etc. means that her film would almost certainly be a mirror image of the Z-Film. Perhaps more important than the presidential limousine itself would be what could be seen behind it. The background to The Babushka Lady's film would inevitably include the Texas School Book Depository (perhaps including the so-called sniper's nest window) and the grassy knoll. The question of The Babushka Lady's identity remained a total mystery following the death of the President. Nobody came forward to claim that they were the mysterious eyewitness and furthermore, nobody could suggest who the lady may have been. There it remained, and perhaps would have continued to remain, were it not for a chance meeting between renowned assassination researcher J Gary Shaw and a young lady called Beverly McGann shortly after a church service at the First Baptist Church of Joshua (a small Texas town 20 miles south of Fort Worth) in November 1970. The aftermath of this meeting is widely known and has been well-documented in many books. Beverly McGann (nee Oliver) related to Gary Shaw how she had filmed the motorcade and the assassination from a point on the south side of Elm Street. As anybody who knows Gary would be aware, he did not just accept this stranger's story without question. No - being aware that she had not had an opportunity to see the Zapruder film (and The Babushka Lady), he took her to Dealey Plaza and asked her to indicate exactly where she had been standing on the fateful day. To Gary's amazement, she did not hesitate but went straight to the point where The Babushka Lady can be seen on the Z-Film. The controversy over Beverly Oliver's claim to be The Babushka Lady has raged unabated from that day to this - and remains one of the most vehemently debated aspects of the Kennedy assassination mystery. Whilst there are parts of Beverly's account which I find difficult to understand, I firmly believe that Beverly Oliver and The Babushka Lady are one and the same person. Like many researchers of my acquaintance, on both sides of the Atlantic, I have frequently become involved in heated discussions (arguments?) concerning this question. I am delighted to report that no matter how involved some of these discussions have become, I have not yet ended up exchanging blows with anybody. I have something of an advantage over many researchers, particularly those outside the United States, in that I have had the pleasure and privilege to meet Beverly Oliver and her husband Charles Massegee on several occasions. I like to think that we trust and respect one another and I am proud to call Beverly Oliver my friend. Perhaps it may be thought that this tends to colour my opinion that Beverly was The Babushka Lady. I would refute that and stress that by speaking with Beverly regularly over the past couple of years I have come to know someone who is, in my opinion, one of the most open and honest people I have ever encountered. Assassination of John F. Kennedy Encyclopedia (3) Beverly Oliver, testimony (18th November, 1994) I was a 17-year-old girl that was at Dealey Plaza that day taking pictures of the President when he was assassinated. I never wanted to become a public figure over this. I never intended to. Until my name was accidentally leaked to the press in 1972, I was not a public figure. It has caused me great grief. It has caused me a lot of concern in my life. I have been called a liar as recently as today. I have been called a hoax. I am neither a liar nor am I a hoax. I am who I say I am. I was down there that day standing between 20 and 30 feet from the President when he was shot. I was taking a movie film which on the 25th of November was confiscated by a man who identified himself as an FBI agent. I have never until recently started trying to inquire about my film because I am extremely patriotic, did not see that there was any reason to because I had assumed all these years that it was locked up until the year 2029 as evidence, and I am still not sure that there is anything sinister about it, and that is why I am here. I would just like an explanation as to what happened to my film and where it is, and that is the only reason that I am here.

American History >The Assassination of JFK >Jean Hill ▼ Primary Sources ▼ Jean Hill Jean Hill Jean Hill was born in 1931. She worked as a teacher in Oklahoma City before moving to a Dallas school in 1962. On 22nd November, 1963, Hill, watched the motorcade of President John F. Kennedy from the grassy knoll facing the Texas School Depository Building. Hill and her friend, Mary Moorman, who was taking Polaroid pictures of the motorcade, were only a few feet away from President John F. Kennedy when he was shot. Hill and Moorman thought the shots had come from behind her on the grassy knoll and as soon as the firing stopped they ran towards the wooden fence in an attempt to find the gunman. Hill claims that they were detained by two secret service men. After searching the two women they confiscated the picture of the assassination. Hill gave a statement to the police where she stated: "Mary Moorman started to take a picture. We were looking at the president and Jackie in the back seat... Just as the president looked up two shots rang out and I saw the president grab his chest and fell forward across Jackie's lap... There was an instant pause between two shots and the motorcade seemingly halted for an instant. Three or four more shots rang out and the motorcade sped away." Shirley Martin telephoned Hill on 25th January, 1964. She told Martin that as soon as the firing stopped they ran towards the wooden fence in an attempt to find the gunman. However, they were detained by two secret service men. After searching the two women they confiscated the picture of the assassination. Hill told Martin that she was very scared as another witness, Warren Reynolds, had been shot in the head by an unknown assailant, the night before: "Mrs Hill told me that she and Miss Moorman had received many threatening phone calls urging them to keep quiet and when they reported these to the Dallas police, they received an official brush-off. Mrs. Hill said Miss Moorman would not talk to me as she was much more frightened and upset over the whole thing than Mrs. Hill was." Hill later gave evidence to the Warren Commission that was highly controversial. She claimed that she heard between four and six shots. Hill was also convinced that some of the shots came the grassy knoll. In interviews on television after the assassination Hill said she saw "a little white dog" in the rear seat of the president's car. As there was no dog in the car, the reliability of Hill's witness statement was undermined. However, 25 years later, it was revealed that a small white stuffed animal was on the back seat of the car. A child had presented it to Jackie Kennedy at the beginning of the tour of Dallas. This information was suppressed in order to discredit Hill as a reliable witness. The Zapruder Film film shows the position of Jean Hill (left) and Mary Moorman when John F. Kennedy was shot. The Zapruder Film film shows the position of Jean Hill (left) and Mary Moorman when John F. Kennedy was shot. Jean Hill told Mark Lane: "The FBI was here for days. They practically lived here. They just didn't like what I told them I saw and heard when the President was assassinated. She declined to permit a filmed interview, stating, for two years I have told the truth, but I have two children to support and I am a public school teacher. My principal said it would be best not to talk about the assassination, and I just can't go through it all again. I can't believe the Warren Report. I know it's all a lie, because I was there when it happened, but I can't talk about it anymore because I don't want the FBI here constantly and I want to continue to teach here. I hope you don't think I'm a coward, but I cannot talk about the case anymore." Assassination of John F. Kennedy Encyclopedia For many years Hill refused to give interviews about the John Kennedy assassination. However, in 1990, Hill agreed to work as a technical adviser on Oliver Stone's motion picture, JFK. The following year she revealed what happened after the assassination: "They (Secret Service agents) took me to the Records Building and we went up to a room on the fourth floor. There were two guys sitting there on the other side of a table looking out a window that overlooked the killing zone, where you could see all of the goings on. You got the impression that they had been sitting there for a long time. They asked me what I had seen, and it became clear that they knew what I had seen. They asked me how many shots I had heard and I told them four to six. And they said, No, you didn't. There were three shots. We have three bullets and that's all we're going to commit to now. I said, Well, I know what I heard, and they told me, What you heard were echoes. You would be very wise to keep your mouth shut. Well, I guess I've never been that wise. I know the difference between firecrackers, echoes, and gunshots. I'm the daughter of a game ranger, and my father took me shooting all my life." In 1992 Hill published her book on the case, JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness. Jean Hill, who worked as a schoolteacher in Dallas for over twenty years, died on 7th November, 2000. She was to become friend, confidante and biographer of Nelson Mandela - but this was a complete change of direction from the ambitions of her early life. She grew up in a comfortable, happy home in Pretoria, younger daughter of Cyril Benson, Irish administrator of the Pretoria General Hospital, and his wife, Lucy Stubbs, descended from 1820 settlers in the Eastern Cape, and with all the colour prejudices of the English-speaking white South African of the time. Mary was a romantic, stage-struck child of passionate determination who, at about 18, succeeded in leaving provincial Pretoria in search of a stage or film career. In London and California, as an ardent fan, she encountered many of the stars, but before she found any personal success the approach of war drove her home. Briefly she was a secretary in the British High Commission. Then, still seeking wider shores, she joined the SA Women's Auxiliary Army Service. In 1942, Benson was in Egypt. Attractive, intelligent, capable and hard-working, she soon was promoted to captain and served as PA to a series of distinguished commanders. There were two unhappy love affairs. She also served in Algeria and Italy, where she lured a production of The Barretts Of Wimpole Street, with old acquaintances Brian Aherne and Katherine Cornell, from Naples to play to the troops in Siena. Then there was work with United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) in Athens and Vienna. After the war, Benson returned to her interest in films and became secretary to David Lean, whose Brief Encounter was showing in London. Benson had a great capacity for making - and keeping - friends, and there were many of them in Britain, America and Africa. She seized an opportunity to return to America and tried to improve her prospects of writing for the screen. But then she read Alan Paton's Cry The Beloved Country (1948) and, extremely moved by it, wrote to him, beginning a life-long friendship. The book awakened her sense of "African-ness" and set her thinking of the life of her black fellow South Africans, realising that while working to alleviate the suffering and dreadful deprivations in postwar Europe, she had never considered the parallel conditions endured by millions of South African blacks. She began to feel that it was there that she should be working. With this in mind, she left the US. In London, however, she attended a meeting addressed by the Reverend Michael Scott, an Anglican priest of whose work in South Africa and the UN she vaguely remembered hearing. She was immediately in thrall. Asking if she could be of use, she was installed in a dark little room with piles of assorted papers which she quickly reduced to order. So began a seven-year partnership, and return to South Africa was delayed. Scott at this time was much involved in lobbying the UN on behalf of certain South West African tribes, particularly the Herero and the Nama, who were bitterly opposed to the projected incorporation of their lands into South Africa. Benson, now working for and with African people, found her racial prejudices fade. She became Scott's right hand, writing, speaking, lobbying, her wartime organising experience, writing ability and "way" with people being invaluable. Scott's health was very fragile and Mary had often to deputise. Together, and with such figures as Lord Hemingford and David Astor of the Observer, they launched the Africa Bureau in 1952. Its purpose was to inform the British public on African affairs, to enable African leaders to discuss their problems with colonial authorities and to build up support for independence movements. Benson was involved in opposing British colonial policy in forming the Central African Federation and in lobbying for reforms in the High Commission Territories (Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland). In 1951, when the exiled Tshekedi Khama of the then Bechuanaland (Botswana) came to Britain to negotiate for his return home, she acted as his secretary, the first African she had ever worked for. She came to know him and his family very well. And, some years later, after his untimely death, she undertook his biography, thus beginning her writing career. Benson returned to South Africa in 1956, ending her partnership and deep personal relationship with Scott and the Africa Bureau. The Treason Trial of 156 South Africans of all races had begun, and she was asked to take over the office of the Treason Trial Defence Fund. This enabled her to meet many of the opponents of apartheid and gain a first-hand insight into the conditions under which the majority of the people lived. But deteriorating health forced her resignation, and she went into her father's old hospital in Pretoria, where her illness was diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis. Cortisone was prescribed, and though it provided no cure, it effectively held the disease at bay and enabled her to continue her punishing career with enormous and determined courage for many years. Meeting so many of the people's leaders gathered in Johannesburg for the trial encouraged her to embark on the hitherto unrecorded history of the African National Congress. She travelled round the country, interviewed many of the older members (Mweli Skota and Canon Calata among them), founders or early officers, and gathered their life stories. When Chief Luthuli was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she went to Natal to act as his secretary. She had secret interviews with Nelson Mandela, then known as the "Black Pimpernel", while he was underground in 1961. In 1964, she had many clandestine meetings with Bram Fischer, the distinguished Afrikaner advocate and one-time leader of the South African Communist party, whom she warmly admired. He had also gone underground to continue his anti-apartheid political work, and through him Mary began to learn about the Afrikaans. All this time she was also attending political trials in remote parts of the country and reporting them overseas. In 1963, she was in the US, invited by the United Nations to testify (the first South African to do so) to the Committee on Apartheid, thus inviting the wrath of the South African government. She travelled in the south of the country, meeting many of the black anti-segregation leaders. The next year, after the Rivonia arrests in South Africa, she was back at the UN to testify, particularly about the men on trial, many of whom she knew. In South Africa, Benson had become deeply interested in the work of the playwright Athol Fugard, who was working for a non-racial theatre, and for breaking the cultural barriers of apartheid. Once again, her latent theatrical interests were aroused and she co-operated with Fugard in the production of his work in Britain and America as well as in South Africa. But this freedom in her own country could not last: in 1966, the authorities imposed a banning order. Unable to move about the country, to meet people, to write or speak in public, she realised she had to leave. She returned there once more, heavily restricted, to be with her father while he was dying. In London, where she settled, she devoted herself to writing. In addition to her two invaluable volumes on the history of the ANC (unique because she was able to interview many now dead), she published a novel At The Still Point (1969) and an autobiography, A Far Cry (1989); for radio she wrote a play and several documentaries, and she frequently broadcast on political developments in South Africa. The stage-struck schoolgirl eventually was able (in a very unforeseen form) to return to her early love - of drama - and combine it with the later love - of her people, white and black. She is survived by a sister. Ross Devenish writes: I first became aware of the name Mary Benson when as a boy I read a front-page story in my father's newspaper. I deciphered this story about a woman who had addressed the United Nations about somewhere called South West Africa. I asked my father who the woman was. When I finally got to meet Mary Benson, through Athol Fugard, another surprise was in store for me. She was not just interested in developments in Africa, but her concerns and friendships ranged far and wide. Not just writers, but actors, directors, scientists, astronomers, politicians and journalists. She was a renaissance woman. Then there was, of course, her fervent loyalty and commitment, particularly to the cause of South Africa and Nelson Mandela. In the years when newspapers and television did not like to be reminded of the man imprisoned on Robben Island, Mary never let them forget. Each year, on the anniversary of his imprisonment, she would phone them all again, shaming and cajoling them into doing something. She never gave up phoning, writing, scripting, lobbying, and giving away whatever money she had in pursuit of her causes. The other thing that always struck me about her was that she never became doctrinaire, and she never lost sight of people, the great and the small. I am proud to have counted Mary as my friend for nearly 30 years. Following the end of apartheid, she returned to South Africa as often as she could, picking up on her old friendships. But it was in London, only a few months ago, that she last saw Mandela, when he and Graca Machel arrived at her flat in St John's Wood. Bearing an enormous bunch of white lilies, Mandela was returning to the same place that he had visited Mary, in 1962, while on the run from South Africa. Dorothy Mary Benson, writer and political activist, born December 9 1919; died June 19 2000

.. copy and pasted from "Copilot Search" .. Revolutionary scriptwriter, film director and actress Embeth Davidtz should play a phantom angel presence in the streets of Gotham who is the anonymous Jill the Ripper.. But this article says that if Jill the Ripper existed she may have been a midwife or abortionist.. and this is a very scary role.. I mean.. I don't even personally have a mental comprehension of how scary this role is. An abortionist?.. Or a midwife as Jill the Ripper?.. How could Embeth Davidtz possibly confront this role for Tim Burton's Gotham films.. I need to do exhaustive research into all the scholarship of Jill the Ripper theories.. and.. and..

Like Dislike Jill the Ripper is a theory suggesting that Jack the Ripper may have been a woman, possibly a midwife or abortionist, who committed the Whitechapel murders in 1888. Origins of the Theory The idea of Jill the Ripper emerged after the murder of Mary Jane Kelly, the last of the canonical five victims. Detective Abberline reportedly considered the possibility that the killer could be female after witness Caroline Maxwell claimed to have seen Kelly alive hours after her estimated time of death, wearing a distinctive maroon shawl and other clothing. This led to speculation that a woman could have been impersonating Kelly or moving freely without arousing suspicion in Whitechapel at night casebook.org casebook.org +2 . Rationale Behind the Theory Proponents argue that a female killer, particularly a midwife, would have several advantages: Anatomical knowledge: Midwives would have the medical skills to perform precise mutilations attributed to the Ripper casebook.org casebook.org +1 . Access to victims: A midwife or clandestine abortionist could enter homes without raising suspicion, especially if victims were pregnant whitechapeljack.com whitechapeljack.com . Alibi and mobility: Midwives often worked irregular hours, allowing them to move about at night without attracting attention casebook.org casebook.org +1 . Bloodstains explained: Blood on clothing could be dismissed as part of their professional duties casebook.org casebook.org +1 . Notable Suspects Mary Pearcey, executed in 1890 for murdering her lover’s wife and child, is often cited as a potential Jill the Ripper due to similarities in her crimes and her violent tendencies. However, there is no evidence she was a midwife, and autopsies of the canonical Ripper victims do not confirm pregnancy, which weakens the midwife hypothesis whitechapeljack.com whitechapeljack.com +1 . Criticisms and Limitations Critics note that most Ripper victims were strangled before mutilation, which would not necessarily require anatomical expertise. Additionally, the theory relies heavily on circumstantial evidence, such as witness accounts and clothing descriptions, and lacks definitive proof. DNA evidence from letters and crime scene items has been inconclusive, though some analyses have suggested the possibility of a female perpetrator LADbible LADbible +1 . Conclusion While the Jill the Ripper theory offers an intriguing alternative to the traditional male suspect narrative, it remains speculative. It highlights the possibility that a woman, potentially a midwife or abortionist, could have committed the Whitechapel murders, but no conclusive evidence has ever confirmed this theory casebook.org casebook.org +2 .

Terrie Gray, 49, of Leesville, was convicted after just five minutes of deliberation by the jury of murdering Athena Rose Denise Miller, 4, who prosecutors said was repeatedly abused in a “dungeon-like” bedroom, KPLC reported. Gray was also convicted of second-degree child abuse involving the little girl’s two-year-old brother, Salem. The two children and their father, Logan Miller, 26, had moved into Gray’s home in 2024, according to authorities. Being South African, becoming Jewish How Embeth Davidtz’s complex life informs her art By Curt Schleier July 10, 2025, 9:56 am Embeth Davidtz directs "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight." (All photos Coco Van Oppens/Courtesy Sony Pictures Classics) Embeth Davidtz directs "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight." (All photos Coco Van Oppens/Courtesy Sony Pictures Classics) “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” is a rare instance where a filmmaker and a film are so perfectly matched they virtually become one. It’s based on a memoir of the same name by Alexandra Fuller, about growing up in Rhodesia-Zimbabwe during the country’s struggles for independence. (The title is from a line written by a British humorist: “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight For Mother Will Be There.” Presumably if you are British, you will make the connection. I am not.) The Fuller family are tenant farmers, living a hardscrabble life, less worried about the poisonous snakes that invade their home than the possibility that upcoming elections will lead to Black rule. Get The Jewish Standard Newsletter by email and never miss our top storiesFree Sign Up Mother Nicola Fuller (played by Embeth Davidtz, who also wrote the screenplay and directed) is convinced of her white superiority, though she spends most days in a drunken stupor, ignoring her two children. This is likely why we watch events unfold through the eyes of one of them, 8-year-old Bobo (Lexi Venter), a wild child, roaming the countryside on her motorbike, unsupervised and unwashed. Her warmest ties to an adult are with the African housemaid Sarah (Zikhona Bali), who serves as a surrogate mom, though the youngster mindlessly repeats the racist platitudes she learned from her parents. It is a complicated story about a complicated time. That it is so well told is in many ways a function of the period Ms. Davidtz spent growing up in South Africa during apartheid; a time, she tells me later, that is in part responsible for her conversion to Judaism. Ms. Davidtz, 59, who lives in Los Angeles now, was born in Lafayette, Ind. Her South African parents were in the States so her father, John, could study chemical engineering at Purdue. The family moved briefly to Trenton before returning to South Africa. “South Africa’s story is very similar to Zimbabwe’s, but also different,” she told me. “Zimbabwe had a very bloody, brutal war of independence that went on for many, many years. “South Africa was much tougher in suppressing the uprising of Nelson Mandela and the people trying to make change. The country was very segregated. Whites went into white-only bathrooms; Blacks went into theirs. There were different buses for whites and Blacks. It was in a way I guess similar to the Deep South in the ’40s and ’50s.” Lexi Venter, as Bobo, and her sort-of surrogate mom, Zikhona Bali, as Sarah. She was 8 years old when she arrived in South Africa. Two years later, the Soweto uprising began, and the country went into a state of emergency. “People were being arrested everywhere,” she said. “I’d walk home from school, and that famous yellow police van would show up. A cop would come out and whack a Black man, stick him in the back of the van, and race off. I remember these very violent encounters. “I was just telling someone recently about an incident when I was in a roadhouse. These two really drunk young white men — probably university students or something — came out of the restaurant. There was a very humble, very well-dressed Black man with his family sitting in his car, eating his takeout. They hauled this guy out of his car and punched him. I remember the sound of that and the sound of a body falling, all for no reason at all. It was what they could do with impunity. This was white people saying we will not let you be human beings — and that sends messages into a child’s nervous system.” Despite problems — more on them later — Ms. Davidtz went on to have a successful career as an actor. After achieving a modicum of success in South African theater and film, she did the same in the U.S. She had important roles in such films as “Matilda,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” as well as in landmark TV series including “In Treatment,” “Californication,” and “Mad Men.” But it was her role in “Schindler’s List” that set her career — and in a way, her personal life as well — in another direction. Steven Spielberg saw her in an obscure South African film and hired her to play Helen Hirsch, a maid to camp commander and SS officer Amon Goth. I wondered if that role influenced her decision to convert. “It’s interesting,” she responded. “In my childhood in South Africa, it was the Jewish community that was in my mind always on the right side of every issue. Every Jewish friend I had, their parents were fighting for democracy in South Africa. “We studied the war extensively in history as kids, but in my relationship with Steven and the film, it was as though a whole world opened up to me. I always felt that this was an identity I aligned with from the South African experience. That’s what started it. Then ‘Schindler’s’ went further than that. And then I met and fell in love with the Jewish man, and so that was the final thing. “I have Jewish children. Part of me is African, the other part of me is my Jewish identity in my family.” Embeth Davidtz also plays Bobo’s mother, Nicola Fuller. The family observes the holidays and intermittently attends services. “But after October 7, we have all gathered more closely together because we’re all pretty much in a fight for our lives,” Ms. Davidtz said It is that sense of community she relies on. A dozen years ago, she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I asked if her newfound Judaism provided any solace. “I think that I had a sense of — I wouldn’t say it was religious, per se — I feel like I had a sense that I was going to be taken care of. If I don’t survive this, my children were going to be okay. They have a place in their community.” This is 180 degrees different from her own upbringing in a household with an alcoholic father; it was her childhood that attracted her to the book. “I was this little, wild, feral, sometimes terrible child,” she said. “I was dirty, barefoot, somewhat neglected, and not taking care of myself, and so I recognized it in Alexandra Fuller’s writing. Ironically, though in retrospect, using Bobo as the centerpiece of her film was the logical choice; it was not her first choice. “I came to the screenplay originally wanting to make a very splashy part for myself with the mother,” she said. “In the memoir, the mother had many nervous breakdowns. She goes on all kinds of avenues that are so cinematic. “This was an incredible character to play,” Ms. Davitz continued. “‘This is what I’m going to do,’” she recalled thinking. ‘I’m going to produce this and I’m going to play this part.’ “But as time went on, and my drafts evolved, the mother became smaller and smaller, less significant. And then it dawned on me one day: The best way to tell my story would be through the lens of a child. And so I somewhat abandoned that mother role, where I was going to chew up the scenery.” Ms. Davidtz says that 60 percent of the film is based on the book, and 40 percent is drawn from her own life. Some changes are purely cosmetic, made to simplify the story. “The character of Sarah was a compilation of various different characters,” she said. But others, particularly those drawn from her own personal experience, added texture. At one point, Bobo visits her wealthy grandparents, characters not in Fuller’s book. “I based the grandparents on my grandparents,” Ms. Davidtz said. “My grandmother was very bigoted and snooty” and represented the view of the nation’s whites. She is still plagued by memories of the violence she witnessed as a child, and her work in the film was not just an artistic project, but a healing process as well. “I’m separated from Africa because I live in America, and I’ve had this feeling I’ve been divided in half,” Ms. Davitz said. “I felt by making this film I could make peace somewhat with my experience living in South Africa.” “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” opened today.

Olanzapine toxicity Neil LongNov 3, 2020 Home Toxicology Library Toxicants Olanzapine is a second generation atypical antipsychotic. Widely used in Australasia and therefore a fairly common presentation to the emergency department. Olanzapine like queitiapine has a predictable dose-dependent CNS depression. Toxic Mechanism: Olanzapine antagonises the mesolimbic dopamine (D2), serotonin, histamine the muscarninic M1 and peripheral alpha 1 receptors. This causes an anticholinergic effect (muscarinic receptors) in overdose and drowsiness (histamine receptor blockade). Toxicokinetics: Rapidly absorbed, oral or sublingual Large volume of distribution 10-20 L/kg Large first pass effect Hepatic metabolism to inactive water-soluble metabolites Resuscitation: Reduced GCS: Prompt intubation and ventilation Hypotension: Give 10 – 20 ml/kg of IV crystalloid, if response is not adequate start noradrenaline (adrenaline is contraindicated due to paradoxical hypotension from beta 2 mediated vasodilatation). Noradrenaline dose: 0.15mg/kg in 50ml D5W at 1-10ml/hr (0.05 – 0.5 mcg/kg/min) Seizures (rare)/agitation: IV benzodiazepines incrementally dosed every 5 minutes to effect. Check the patient is not in a dysrhythmia Can be managed with benzodiazepines (varying doses in the textbooks, easy method is 0.1mg/kg IV for lorazepam (max 4mg) / midazolam (max 10mg) / diazepam (max 10mg). Or… Lorazepam 0.1mg/kg max 4mg Diazepam 0.15mg/kg max 10mg Midazolam 0.2mg/kg max 10mg Risk Assessment Dose-related risk assessment: Children: the toxic dose is unclear but symptoms are likely to develop when >0.5 mg/kg have been ingested. Delayed extrapyramidal effects can occur in children days later. Clinical features should manifest within 2 – 4 hours and may last 48 hours (coma usually lasts 24 – 48 hours) Sedation, ataxia, miosis (unlike the mydriasis commonly seen with anticholinergics), fluctuating mental status. Reduced GCS, miosis and tachycardia is almost pathognomonic of olanzapine overdose in the western world. Tachycardia and orthostatic Hypotension Mild to moderate anticholinergic syndrome Supportive Care Controlling the delirium can be difficult, things to consider include Titrated doses of benzodiazepines e.g. diazepam 2.5 – 5 mg every 5 minutes IV until gentle sedation is achieved (doses used may necessitate intubation). Controversially physostigmine has been used which has been reportedly reversed agitation and olanzapine comas but has its own side effect profile. Physical restraint Bladder scan and a catheter for urinary retention (no amount of benzodiazepines will fix this agitation) Investigations Screening: 12 lead ECG, BSL, Paracetamol level Specific: ECG monitoring, do an ECG at presentation and 6 hours, if this is normal then cardiac monitoring may stop. If intubated then the patient will need ECG every 4 hours until clinical symptoms or cardiac abnormalities resolve. Non specific ST – T wave changes occur in 15%, minor QT prolongation but no Torsades de pointes reported QT Nomogram QT nomogram risk stratification for torsades de pointes Decontamination: Rarely used as the onset of coma and resolution is rapid and good supportive care ensures a good outcome. Enhanced Elimination Not clinical useful Antidote None available Disposition Children who have ingested >0.5 mg/kg should be observed in hospital for 4 hours, if asymptomatic they can be discharged but warned they may develop extrapyramidal movements up to 3 days later. Patients should be observed for 4 hours, if asymptomatic with a normal baseline ECG, no hypotension and eating and drinking they can be medically cleared Patients with any clinical features should be observed or treated as required until symptoms have resolved. Depending on severity patients may stay in an overnight observation ward or may need ICU. Daily Galaxy 74K Followers A 12-year-old boy built a nuclear fusion device in his spare room. Then it detected real neutrons Story by Arezki Amiri • 18h • 4 min read A Texas Seventh-Grader Built a Fusion Reactor in a Spare Room. Image credit: NBC 5 News | The Daily Galaxy --Great Discoveries Channel A Texas Seventh-Grader Built a Fusion Reactor in a Spare Room. Image credit: NBC 5 News | The Daily Galaxy --Great Discoveries Channel © Daily Galaxy CA At eight years old, Aiden McMillan started reading about nuclear physics. He wasn’t doing it for school. He was just interested. For the next two years, he didn’t touch a single piece of equipment. He read, studied concepts, and ran calculations. Only then did he start building. Sponsored By the time he was 12, that quiet start had become something few adults ever attempt. Working out of a spare room at home and a nonprofit workshop in West Dallas, the seventh-grader built a machine that produced nuclear fusion, putting him in line for a Guinness World Record. Aiden Mcmillan Discussing Fusion Project. Aiden Mcmillan Discussing Fusion Project. © Daily Galaxy CA McMillan told NBC DFW that he pursued the project simply because he found it interesting. “It doesn’t make me jump higher. It doesn’t make me write faster. It doesn’t do anything for me,” he said. “But in the grand scheme of things, fusion as a whole, in my opinion, is the energy of the future.” Two Years of Reading, Then Two Years of Building McMillan, a student in the Dallas Independent School District, spent the first two years of the project studying nuclear physics before he assembled anything. He needed to understand the underlying science before he could translate it into hardware. Sponsored The next two years were spent building and testing. He worked through seven different prototypes before reaching a result. Components failed, designs were scrapped, and the process required skills well outside a standard middle school curriculum, including how to handle vacuum pumps and manage high-voltage equipment safely. The Nuclear Fusor Built By Aiden Macmillan, Pictured At Launchpad Incubator. The Nuclear Fusor Built By Aiden Macmillan, Pictured At Launchpad Incubator. © Daily Galaxy CA “I mean, I loved the project, but I also kinda hated it,” McMillan told NBC DFW. Much of the physical build took place at Launchpad, a nonprofit makerspace housed in a brick building in West Dallas. The space supports ambitious student engineering projects, and McMillan’s work was part of what helped inspire its creation. How the Device Actually Works Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the sun. It works by forcing two light atomic nuclei together with enough energy that they merge into a single larger nucleus, releasing energy as they combine. McMillan’s machine is a type of device called a fusor. It uses high voltage to accelerate atoms of deuterium, a form of hydrogen, inside a sealed chamber until some of them collide fast enough to fuse. The device does not generate usable electricity. Its purpose is to demonstrate that fusion is occurring. Sponsored The proof comes from neutrons. When deuterium atoms fuse, they release neutrons as a byproduct, and those neutrons can be measured with a detector. Professional laboratories use the same method to verify fusion. According to Newsweek, McMillan’s neutron measurements have since been independently verified. When the detector confirmed a result, McMillan’s reaction was immediate. “We got neutrons, yeah!” he recalled to NBC DFW. “Kind of tearing up about it cause it was like, hard to describe. It was like the end of a long, long journey.” Safety and a Mother Who Needed Convincing Building a fusion device at home raised real concerns, and McMillan’s mother was not prepared to wave them aside. She required a detailed accounting of every risk before allowing the project to move forward. “There were some alarm bells with my mom, yes,” McMillan told NBC DFW. “She was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, take a step back, tell me exactly what could go wrong, and how it could go wrong and make sure it doesn’t go wrong.'” The breakthrough moment came when the device generated neutrons The breakthrough moment came when the device generated neutrons © Daily Galaxy CA Winning that trust was a condition of the project continuing at all. Without it, the work would have stopped at notebooks and sketches. The family worked through the safety questions rather than around them, and the build proceeded from there. The Record He Is Chasing The current Guinness World Record for youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion belongs to Jackson Oswalt of Memphis, Tennessee, who did it in 2018 just hours before turning 13. Oswalt had started his project at age 11, converting his family’s playroom into a lab and sourcing parts on eBay. He taught himself using the online community Fusor.net, and his results were later verified by the Open Source Fusor Research Consortium. Guinness officially recognized his record in October 2020. Oswalt himself had broken a previous record set by Taylor Wilson, who achieved fusion at age 14 in 2008. When Oswalt’s story went public, FBI agents visited his Memphis home and swept it with a Geiger counter to check for radiation. The instrument detected nothing dangerous. McMillan achieved fusion at 12, which would make him several months younger than Oswalt was at the time of his result. He has submitted a formal application to Guinness World Records and is awaiting their verification decision. What the Achievement Represents McMillan’s fusor, like Oswalt’s before it, does not solve the broader challenge of making fusion a practical energy source. The device produces real fusion reactions but generates no net electricity. The gap between demonstrating fusion and making it commercially viable remains the central problem facing the field. That context does not diminish what McMillan built. He worked through seven prototypes over four years, taught himself vacuum systems and high-voltage handling, and produced neutron measurements that have been independently confirmed. His Guinness application is now under review. Enjoyed this article? Subscribe to our free newsletter for engaging stories, exclusive content, and the latest news. The Marvel Television Studios production for Disney+ will complete the trilogy started with WandaVision in 2020 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. The first two series focused on the characters of Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness. Now the third and final show, releasing on October 14, 2026, will focus on Vision, played by Paul Bettany. Star Bettany confirms that the show will explore the dynamic between Vision and Ultron (James Spader). Terry Matalas is the showrunner on VisionQuest. Sponsored Paul Bettany on Vision's and Ultron's relationship in VisionQuest Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Bettany shared that VisionQuest was currently in the post-production stage. He said that showrunner Matalas had done a grand job and shared VisionQuest was funny, "moving," and super exciting. James Spader voiced Ultron James Spader voiced Ultron The actor went on to praise his co-star James Spader, who had earlier voiced the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Bettany said Spader was delicious and funny in VisionQuest and that they loved working with one another. However, the British star did not expand on the fact that viewers might see a human version of Ultron in the show. Instead, he said, "The story is largely revolved around that relationship, and it’s real fun." Bettany also added that VisionQuest is much like WandaVision and will end the trilogy while also being its own thing. He was very proud to be part of the show. More about VisionQuest After being killed by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2018), Vision (Bettany) was resurrected in WandaVision. After the end of the show, White Vision emerges, having been rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D. In VisionQuest, Vision tries to regain his memory and humanity. Besides Ultron, other characters of note included Todd Stashwick as Paladin, a mercenary turned assassin who targets Vision’s technology, and Faran Tahir, who reprises his role as Raza, the Ten Rings leader. Artificial intelligence could lead to extinction, experts warn 30 May 2023 Share Save Add as preferred on Google Chris Vallance Technology reporter Future Publishing/Getty Images A protester outside a London event at which Sam Altman spokeFuture Publishing/Getty Images A protester outside a London event at which Sam Altman spoke Artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity, experts - including the heads of OpenAI and Google Deepmind - have warned. Dozens have supported a statement published on the webpage of the Centre for AI Safety. "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war" it reads. But others say the fears are overblown. Sam Altman, chief executive of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind and Dario Amodei of Anthropic have all supported the statement. The Centre for AI Safety website suggests a number of possible disaster scenarios: AIs could be weaponised - for example, drug-discovery tools could be used to build chemical weapons AI-generated misinformation could destabilise society and "undermine collective decision-making" The power of AI could become increasingly concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, enabling "regimes to enforce narrow values through pervasive surveillance and oppressive censorship" Enfeeblement, where humans become dependent on AI "similar to the scenario portrayed in the film Wall-E" Dr Geoffrey Hinton, who issued an earlier warning about risks from super-intelligent AI, has also supported the Centre for AI Safety's call. Yoshua Bengio, professor of computer science at the university of Montreal, also signed. Dr Hinton, Prof Bengio and NYU Professor Yann LeCun are often described as the "godfathers of AI" for their groundbreaking work in the field - for which they jointly won the 2018 Turing Award, which recognises outstanding contributions in computer science. But Prof LeCun, who also works at Meta, has said these apocalyptic warnings are overblown tweeting that "the most common reaction by AI researchers to these prophecies of doom is face palming". 1:38 Watch: AI 'godfather' Geoffrey Hinton told the BBC earlier this month of AI dangers as he quit Google 'Fracturing reality' Many other experts similarly believe that fears of AI wiping out humanity are unrealistic, and a distraction from issues such as bias in systems that are already a problem. Arvind Narayanan, a computer scientist at Princeton University, has previously told the BBC that sci-fi-like disaster scenarios are unrealistic: "Current AI is nowhere near capable enough for these risks to materialise. As a result, it's distracted attention away from the near-term harms of AI". Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI senior research associate Elizabeth Renieris told BBC News she worried more about risks closer to the present. "Advancements in AI will magnify the scale of automated decision-making that is biased, discriminatory, exclusionary or otherwise unfair while also being inscrutable and incontestable," she said. They would "drive an exponential increase in the volume and spread of misinformation, thereby fracturing reality and eroding the public trust, and drive further inequality, particularly for those who remain on the wrong side of the digital divide". Many AI tools essentially "free ride" on the "whole of human experience to date", Ms Renieris said. Many are trained on human-created content, text, art and music they can then imitate - and their creators "have effectively transferred tremendous wealth and power from the public sphere to a small handful of private entities". But Centre for AI Safety director Dan Hendrycks told BBC News future risks and present concerns "shouldn't be viewed antagonistically". "Addressing some of the issues today can be useful for addressing many of the later risks tomorrow," he said. Superintelligence efforts Media coverage of the supposed "existential" threat from AI has snowballed since March 2023 when experts, including Tesla boss Elon Musk, signed an open letter urging a halt to the development of the next generation of AI technology. That letter asked if we should "develop non-human minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us". In contrast, the new campaign has a very short statement, designed to "open up discussion". The statement compares the risk to that posed by nuclear war. In a blog post OpenAI recently suggested superintelligence might be regulated in a similar way to nuclear energy: "We are likely to eventually need something like an IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] for superintelligence efforts" the firm wrote. 'Be reassured' Both Sam Altman and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai are among technology leaders to have discussed AI regulation recently with the prime minister. Speaking to reporters about the latest warning over AI risk, Rishi Sunak stressed the benefits to the economy and society. "You've seen that recently it was helping paralysed people to walk, discovering new antibiotics, but we need to make sure this is done in a way that is safe and secure," he said. "Now that's why I met last week with CEOs of major AI companies to discuss what are the guardrails that we need to put in place, what's the type of regulation that should be put in place to keep us safe. "People will be concerned by the reports that AI poses existential risks, like pandemics or nuclear wars. "I want them to be reassured that the government is looking very carefully at this." He had discussed the issue recently with other leaders, at the G7 summit of leading industrialised nations, Mr Sunak said, and would raise it again in the US soon. The G7 has recently created a working group on AI.

.. copy and pasted from the Wikipedia article about the "Uyghurs" ..

The Uyghurs,[note 2] alternatively spelled Uighurs,[27][28][29] Uygurs, or Uigurs, are a Turkic ethnic group originating from and culturally affiliated with the general region of Central Asia and East Asia. They speak Uyghur, a Karluk language that shares the same origin with Uzbek. The Uyghurs are recognized as the titular nationality of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. They are one of China's 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities.[30] The Uyghurs are genetically related to west Eurasians, East Asians, Siberians, South Asians and can trace their ancestry to various peoples and cultures, such as the Tocharians, Uyghur Khanate, Qocho, Kara-Khanid Khanate, and Qara Khitai, that had inhabited or migrated to the region. In the past, the name "Uyghurs" applied only to a small minority of these peoples. Otherwise they did not have a standard collective name[note 3] and were identified by their home settlements. They were historically influenced and often ruled by neighboring Chinese, Mongol, Tibetan, and Turkic civilizations. Originally followers of many different belief systems, inhabitants of the region were gradually Islamized after the 10th century, especially under the Chagatai Khanate. By the 16th century, most of them identified as Muslims and no longer recognized symbols of their Buddhist past. Islam continues to play an important role in Uyghur culture and identity. Following the Dzungar–Qing Wars, settlers of various ethnicities were relocated to Dzungaria, which was later combined with the Tarim Basin to the south to become Xinjiang Province.[31] After the Dungan Revolt (1862–1877), Turkic peoples became the dominant demographic group of the region. In 1921 the Soviet Union helped revive the term "Uyghurs", and later Chinese governments grouped Turkic peoples of various backgrounds under that same umbrella category. More Uyghurs live in the Tarim Basin than in northern Xinjiang, while those residing in Taoyuan County of Hunan are descended from Buddhist Uyghurs during the Ming dynasty.[32] Significant diasporic Uyghur communities exist in Turkic countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey,[33] in addition to smaller ones elsewhere.[34] Since 2014,[35][36][37] the Chinese government has been accused of subjecting Uyghurs in Xinjiang to widespread persecution, including arbitrary arrest and detention,[38][39][40] forced sterilization,[41][42] and forced labor.[43][44][45] This is denied by China. Ethnonym Historical ethnonyms The Karluk Turkic speaking group in modern-day Xinjiang lacked well-established ethnic endonyms before the 20th century. They would simply identify themselves as "Muslims"[46][47][48] or "Sarts" (meaning merchant, trader, or caravan leader),[49][50] or by their originating oasis such as "Kashgari" for people from Kashgar or "Hotani" for people from Hotan.[51][46] From the 18th to early 20th century, Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang was commonly referred to as Chanhui (Chinese: 缠回) or Chantou Huihui (Chinese: 缠头回回) (still officially used in Mongolia), which is a Chinese exonym literally meaning turban-wearing Muslims, to be distinguished from Chinese Muslims (nowadays Hui people), commonly referred to as Hanhui (Chinese: 汉回), literally meaning Han Chinese Muslims.[52] Although the term "Hui (Chinese: 回)" or "Huihui (Chinese: 回回)" originates from the term "Uyghur" (Chinese: 回鹘; huí hú), which refers to a Siberian Turkic speaking, instead of Karluk Turkic speaking, ethnic group speaking the "Old Uyghur language", who established the Uyghur Khaganate, Qocho Uyghur Kingdom, and Ganzhou Uyghur Kingdom, the term was later applied to people who believe in any of the Abrahamic religions, such as Judaist Jews (蓝帽回回; lán mào huí huí), Christian Ossetians (绿睛回回; lǜ jīng huí huí), Muslim Chams (占城回回; zhàn chéng huí huí), etc. during the Mongol Empire,[53] and gradually applied specifically to people who believe in Islam, such as Hui people (回族; huí zú), Baihui (白族回回; bái zú huí huí), Menghui [zh] (蒙古回回; měng gǔ huí huí), etc. until nowadays.[54] Although the semantic meaning of the term "Hui (Chinese: 回)" shifted from the Old Uyghur speaking people to Muslims, the Old Uyghur speaking people themselves were predominately non-Muslims. None of Uyghur Khaganate, Qocho Uyghur Kingdom, and Ganzhou Uyghur Kingdom established Islam as the official religion of their states, and their direct descendant, which was renamed as Yugur people, speaking the Neo-Uyghur language predominately practise Buddhism until nowadays, just like their Old Uyghur ancestors.[55][56][57] Nevertheless, due to this semantic connection, ethnonyms of three of the 56 officially recognised ethnic groups in the People's Republic of China, who are Hui, Yugurs, and Uyghurs, share the same etymological origin.[58][59][60] Although Yugurs and Uyghurs both speak Turkic languages, the Yugur (Neo-Uyghur) language, just like the Old Uyghur language, belongs to the Siberian Turkic branch, and Uyghur language belongs to th Karluk Turkic branch. The two ethnic groups are also genetically very distinct from each other.[61][62] Usage of the modern ethnonym "Uyghur" A minority of the modern-day Uyghurs were descendants of the Qocho Uyghur Kingdom based in nowadays Eastern Xinjiang, who spoke the Siberian Turkic Old Uyghur language and predominately practised Buddhism.[63] They were linguistically, religiously and culturally assimilated to the vast majority of Karluk Turkic Chagatai language speaking Muslims in the Chagatai Khanate after the Chagatai conquest.[64][65] Since then, the Uyghur identity in the modern-day Xinjiang had perished until the term "Uyghur" was revived in 1921.[66][67] One thing worth to mention is that after the split of the Eastern Chagatai Khanate, its minor successor, the Turpan Khanate based in Eastern Xinjiang, was externally referred to as "Uyghurstan" due to Eastern Xinjiang's historical connection to the Qocho Uyghur Kingdom, even if the local population had started speaking the Karluk Turkic Chagatai language and practised Islam,[68] whereas the major sucessor, Yarkent Khanate based in the Tarim basin, which later conquered the Turpan Khanate, was externally referred to as "Kashghar Khanate".[69] The modern application of the term "Uyghur" to the Karluk Turkic speaking people was in fact a 20th century invention.[70] The Tashkent conference held in the Soviet Union in 1921 gathered Turkic Muslims from the Tarim Basin, who decided to use the term "Uyghur" as the group's modern ethnonym,[71] although they themselves also realised that their ethnicity should not be confused with that of the Uyghur Khaganate of the Medieval history.[72] This usage was then formally accepted by the Soviet Union, and an Uighur raion was established in the modern-day Kazakhstan bordering China.[73] Hoping to divide the Muslim population of Xinjiang, the Sheng Shicai ruled Xinjiang government in China later accepted the modern usage of the term "Uyghur" from the Soviet Union, but the group in Xinjiang was further divided to Uyghurs and Taranchis (modern Uyghurs in Ili) among the 14 ethnic groups recognised at the time.[74] After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the Taranchis were officially counted into the Uyghurs.[75] Etymology of the term "Uyghur" In the Uyghur language, the ethnonym is written ئۇيغۇر in Arabic script, Уйғур in Uyghur Cyrillic and Uyghur or Uygur (as the standard Chinese romanization, GB 3304–1991) in Latin;[76] they are all pronounced as [ʔʊjˈʁʊːr].[77][78] In Chinese, this is transcribed into characters as 维吾尔 / 維吾爾, which is romanized in pinyin as Wéiwú'ěr. In English, the name is officially spelled Uyghur by the Xinjiang government[79] but also appears as Uighur,[80] Uigur[80] and Uygur (these reflect the various Cyrillic spellings Уиғур, Уигур and Уйгур). The name is usually pronounced in English as /ˈwiː.ɡʊər, -.ɡər/ WEE-goor, -gər (and thus may be preceded by the indefinite article "a"),[80][81][82][27] although some Uyghurs advocate the use of a more native pronunciation /ˌuː.i.ˈɡʊər/ OO-ee-GOOR instead (which, in contrast, calls for the indefinite article "an").[25][26][83] The term's original meaning is unclear. Old Turkic inscriptions record the word uyɣur[84] (Old Turkic: 𐰆𐰖𐰍𐰆𐰺); an example is found on the Sudzi inscription, "I am khan ata of Yaglaqar, came from the Uigur land." (Old Turkic: Uyγur jerinte Yaγlaqar qan ata keltim).[85] It is transcribed into Tang annals as 回纥 / 回紇 (Mandarin: Huíhé, but probably *[ɣuɒiɣət] in Middle Chinese).[86] It was used as the name of one of the Turkic polities formed in the interim between the First and Second Göktürk Khaganates (AD 630–684).[87] The Old History of the Five Dynasties records that in 788 or 809, the Chinese acceded to a Uyghur request and emended their transcription to 回鹘 / 回鶻 (Mandarin: Huíhú, but [ɣuɒiɣuət] in Middle Chinese).[88][89] Modern etymological explanations for the name Uyghur range from derivation from the verb "follow, accommodate oneself"[80] and adjective "non-rebellious" (i.e., from Turkic uy/uð-) to the verb meaning "wake, rouse or stir" (i.e., from Turkic oðğur-). None of these is thought to be satisfactory because the sound shift of /ð/ and /ḏ/ to /j/ does not appear to be in place by this time.[88] The etymology therefore cannot be conclusively determined and its referent is also difficult to fix. The "Huihe" and "Huihu" seem to be a political rather than a tribal designation[90] or it may be one group among several others collectively known as the Toquz Oghuz.[91] The name fell out of use in the 15th century, but was reintroduced in the early 20th century[77][78] by the Soviet Bolsheviks to replace the previous terms Turk and Turki.[92][note 4] The name is currently used to refer to the settled Turkic urban dwellers and farmers of the Tarim Basin who follow traditional Central Asian sedentary practices, distinguishable from the nomadic Turkic populations in Central Asia. The earliest record of a Uyghur tribe appears in accounts from the Northern Wei (4th–6th century A.D.), wherein they were named 袁紇 Yuanhe (< MC ZS *ɦʉɐn-ɦət) and derived from a confederation named 高车 / 高車 (lit. "High Carts"), read as Gāochē in Mandarin Chinese but originally with the reconstructed Middle Chinese pronunciation *[kɑutɕʰĭa], later known as the Tiele (铁勒 / 鐵勒, Tiělè).[94][95][96] Gāochē in turn has been connected to the Uyghur Qangqil (قاڭقىل or Қаңқил).[97] Identity A Uyghur girde naan baker Duration: 17 seconds.0:17 Uyghur blacksmiths at work. Yengisar, Xinjiang, China. Yengisar is famous for the quality of its knives. Uyghur man in traditional clothing, playing a tambur, a traditional Uyghur instrument Throughout its history, the term Uyghur has had an increasingly expansive definition. Initially signifying only a small coalition of Tiele tribes in northern China, Mongolia and the Altai Mountains, it later denoted citizenship in the Uyghur Khaganate. Finally, it was expanded into an ethnicity whose ancestry originates with the fall of the Uyghur Khaganate in the year 842, causing Uyghur migration from Mongolia into the Tarim Basin. The Uyghurs who moved to the Tarim Basin mixed with the local Tocharians, and converted to the Tocharian religion, and adopted their culture of oasis agriculture.[98][99] The fluid definition of Uyghur and the diverse ancestry of modern Uyghurs create confusion as to what constitutes true Uyghur ethnography and ethnogenesis. Contemporary scholars consider modern Uyghurs to be the descendants of a number of peoples, including the ancient Uyghurs of Mongolia migrating into the Tarim Basin after the fall of the Uyghur Khaganate, Iranic Saka tribes and other Indo-European peoples inhabiting the Tarim Basin before the arrival of the Turkic Uyghurs.[100] Uyghur activists identify with the Tarim mummies, the remains of an ancient population that inhabited the region, but genetic research on the mummies and their possible links to modern Uyghurs remains contentious, both for Chinese government officials concerned about ethnic separatism and for Uyghur activists who fear the findings could affect their indigenous claims.[101] A genomic study published in 2021 found that these early mummies had high levels of Ancient North Eurasian ancestry (ANE, about 72%), with smaller admixture from Ancient Northeast Asians (ANA, about 28%), but no detectable Western Steppe-related ancestry.[102][103] They formed a genetically isolated local population that "adopted neighbouring pastoralist and agriculturalist practices, which allowed them to settle and thrive along the shifting riverine oases of the Taklamakan Desert."[104] These mummified individuals were long suspected to have been "Proto-Tocharian-speaking pastoralists", ancestors of the Tocharians, but the authors of this study found no genetic connection with Indo-European-speaking migrants, particularly the Afanasievo or BMAC cultures.[105] Zhang et al. (2025) investigated a Late Bronze Age site in the far west of the Tarim Basin, dated 1600 to 1400 BC. Its inhabitants overwhelmingly descended from the Sintashta and Andronovo population, with additional ancestry from BMAC (10%) and Tarim_EMBA (12%). Nearly all subjects belonged to Y-DNA haplogroup R-M17.[106] Origin of modern nomenclature The Uighurs are the people whom old Russian travelers called "Sart" (a name they used for sedentary, Turkish-speaking Central Asians in general), while Western travelers called them Turki, in recognition of their language. The Chinese used to call them "Ch'an-t'ou" ('Turbaned Heads') but this term has been dropped, being considered derogatory, and the Chinese, using their own pronunciation, now called them Weiwuerh. As a matter of fact there was for centuries no 'national' name for them; people identified themselves with the oasis they came from, such as Kashgar or Turfan. — Owen Lattimore, "Return to China's Northern Frontier." The Geographical Journal, Vol. 139, No. 2, June 1973[107] The term "Uyghur" was not used to refer to a specific existing ethnicity in the 19th century: it referred to an 'ancient people'. A late-19th-century encyclopedia entitled The Cyclopædia of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia said "the Uigur are the most ancient of Turkish tribes and formerly inhabited a part of Chinese Tartary (Xinjiang), now occupied by a mixed population of Turk, Mongol and Kalmuck".[108] Before 1921/1934,[clarification needed] Western writers called the Turkic-speaking Muslims of the oases "Turki" and the Turkic Muslims who had migrated from the Tarim Basin to Ili, Ürümqi and Dzungaria in the northern portion of Xinjiang during the Qing dynasty were known as "Taranchi", meaning "farmer". The Russians and other foreigners referred to them as "Sart",[109] "Turk" or "Turki".[110][note 4] In the early 20th century they identified themselves by different names to different peoples and in response to different inquiries: they called themselves Sarts in front of Kazakhs and Kyrgyz while they called themselves "Chantou" if asked about their identity after first identifying as a Muslim.[111][51] The term "Chantou" (纏頭; Chántóu, meaning "Turban Head") was used to refer to the Turkic Muslims of Altishahr (now Southern Xinjiang),[112][113] including by Hui (Tungan) people.[114] These groups of peoples often identify themselves by their originating oasis instead of an ethnicity;[115] for example those from Kashgar may refer to themselves as Kashgarliq or Kashgari, while those from Hotan identity themselves as "Hotani".[51][46] Other Central Asians once called all the inhabitants of Xinjiang's Southern oases Kashgari,[116] a term still used in some regions of Pakistan.[117] The Turkic people also used "Musulman", which means "Muslim", to describe themselves.[46][47][48] Mural fragment depicting two Uyghur donors, from the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves. Kept in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin. Rian Thum explored the concepts of identity among the ancestors of the modern Uyghurs in Altishahr (the native Uyghur name for Eastern Turkestan or Southern Xinjiang) before the adoption of the name "Uyghur" in the 1930s, referring to them by the name "Altishahri" in his article Modular History: Identity Maintenance before Uyghur Nationalism. Thum indicated that Altishahri Turkis did have a sense that they were a distinctive group separate from the Turkic Andijanis to their west, the nomadic Turkic Kirghiz, the nomadic Mongol Qalmaq and the Han Chinese Khitay before they became known as Uyghurs. There was no single name used for their identity; various native names Altishahris used for identify were Altishahrlik (Altishahr person), yerlik (local), Turki and Musulmān (Muslim); the term Musulmān in this situation did not signify religious connotations, because the Altishahris exclude other Muslim peoples like the Kirghiz while identifying themselves as Musulmān.[118][119] Dr. Laura J Newby says the sedentary Altishahri Turkic people considered themselves separate from other Turkic Muslims since at least the 19th century.[120] The name "Uyghur" reappeared after the Soviet Union took the 9th-century ethnonym from the Uyghur Khaganate, then reapplied it to all non-nomadic Turkic Muslims of Xinjiang.[121] It followed western European orientalists like Julius Klaproth in the 19th century who revived the name and spread the use of the term to local Turkic intellectuals[122] and a 19th-century proposal from Russian historians that modern-day Uyghurs were descended from the Kingdom of Qocho and Kara-Khanid Khanate formed after the dissolution of the Uyghur Khaganate.[123] Historians generally agree that the adoption of the term "Uyghur" is based on a decision from a 1921 conference in Tashkent, attended by Turkic Muslims from the Tarim Basin (Xinjiang).[121][71][124][125] There, "Uyghur" was chosen by them as the name of their ethnicity, although they themselves note that they were not to be confused with the Uyghur Khaganate of medieval history.[109][72] According to Linda Benson, the Soviets and their client Sheng Shicai intended to foster a Uyghur nationality to divide the Muslim population of Xinjiang, whereas the various Turkic Muslim peoples preferred to identify themselves as "Turki", "East Turkestani" or "Muslim".[109] On the other hand, the ruling regime of China at that time, the Kuomintang, grouped all Muslims, including the Turkic-speaking people of Xinjiang, into the "Hui nationality".[126][127] The Qing dynasty and the Kuomintang generally referred to the sedentary oasis-dwelling Turkic Muslims of Xinjiang as "turban-headed Hui" to differentiate them from other predominantly Muslim ethnicities in China.[109][128][note 5] In the 1930s, foreigners travelers in Xinjiang such as George W. Hunter, Peter Fleming, Ella Maillart and Sven Hedin, referred to the Turkic Muslims of the region as "Turki" in their books. Use of the term Uyghur was unknown in Xinjiang until 1934. The area governor, Sheng Shicai, came to power, adopting the Soviet ethnographic classification instead of the Kuomintang's and became the first to promulgate the official use of the term "Uyghur" to describe the Turkic Muslims of Xinjiang.[109][123][130] "Uyghur" replaced "rag-head".[131] Sheng Shicai's introduction of the "Uighur" name for the Turkic people of Xinjiang was criticized and rejected by Turki intellectuals such as Pan-Turkist Jadids and East Turkestan independence activists Muhammad Amin Bughra (Mehmet Emin) and Masud Sabri. They demanded the names "Türk" or "Türki" be used instead as the ethnonyms for their people. Masud Sabri viewed the Hui people as Muslim Han Chinese and separate from his people,[132] while Bughrain criticized Sheng for his designation of Turkic Muslims into different ethnicities which could sow disunion among Turkic Muslims.[133][134] After the Communist victory, the Chinese Communist Party under Chairman Mao Zedong continued the Soviet classification, using the term "Uyghur" to describe the modern ethnicity.[109] In current usage, Uyghur refers to settled Turkic-speaking urban dwellers and farmers of the Tarim Basin and Ili who follow traditional Central Asian sedentary practices, as distinguished from nomadic Turkic populations in Central Asia. However, Chinese government agents[clarification needed] designate as "Uyghur" certain peoples with significantly divergent histories and ancestries from the main group. These include the Lopliks of Ruoqiang County and the Dolan people, thought to be closer to the Oirat Mongols and the Kyrgyz.[135][136] The use of the term Uyghur led to anachronisms when describing the history of the people.[137] In one of his books, the term Uyghur was deliberately not used by James Millward.[138] Another ethnicity, the Western Yugur of Gansu, identify themselves as the "Yellow Uyghur" (Sarïq Uyghur).[139] Some scholars say the Yugurs' culture, language and religion are closer to the original culture of the original Uyghur Karakorum state than is the culture of the modern Uyghur people of Xinjiang.[140] Linguist and ethnographer S. Robert Ramsey argues for inclusion of both the Eastern and Western Yugur and the Salar as sub-groups of the Uyghur based on similar historical roots for the Yugur and on perceived linguistic similarities for the Salar.[141] "Turkistani" is used as an alternate ethnonym by some Uyghurs.[142] For example, the Uyghur diaspora in Arabia, adopted the identity "Turkistani". Some Uyghurs in Saudi Arabia adopted the Arabic nisba of their home city, such as "Al-Kashgari" from Kashgar. Saudi-born Uyghur Hamza Kashgari's family originated from Kashgar.[143][144] Population Uyghur hunter in Kashgar The Uyghur population within China generally remains centered in Xinjiang region with some smaller subpopulations elsewhere in the country, such as in Taoyuan County where an estimated 5,000–10,000 live.[145][146] The size of the Uyghur population, particularly in China, has been the subject of dispute. Chinese authorities place the Uyghur population within the Xinjiang region to be just over 12 million, comprising approximately half of the total regional population.[147] As early as 2003, however, some Uyghur groups wrote that their population was being vastly undercounted by Chinese authorities, claiming that their population actually exceeded 20 million while presenting "little evidence to support those figures".[148] Population disputes have continued into the present, with some activists and groups such as the World Uyghur Congress and Uyghur American Association claiming that the Uyghur population ranges between 20 and 30 million.[149][150][151][152] Some have even claimed that the real number of Uyghurs is actually 35 million.[153][154] Scholars, however, have generally rejected these claims, with Professor Dru C. Gladney writing in the 2004 book Xinjiang: China's Muslim Borderland that there is "scant evidence" to support Uyghur claims that their population within China exceeds 20 million.[155]
