The alarming details behind a 14-year-old’s random murder of a retired teacher in Ontario
On May 29, 2025, an 83-year-old retired teacher was stabbed
During his months in custody since stabbing an 83-year-old woman to death in a frenzy of unprovoked violence outside her Ontario home, the teenager killer was involved in a fight after which he declared he “hasn’t felt this alive” since he committed his murder.
His apparent deficit in remorse while relishing violence was highlighted by Crown prosecutors at his sentencing hearing on Tuesday.

Eleanor Doney, whom many friends and family called Ellie, was raking leaves outside her home in Pickering, just east of Toronto, on May 29, 2025, when she was attacked by a 14-year-old boy dressed in a black shiny trench coat, a black COVID-style mask, black gloves, overly large dress shoes and carrying a briefcase.
Because of his young age, the identity of the killer is protected by law and cannot be published. In April, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
In court Tuesday, the boy stood up inside the prisoner’s box and slowly unfolded a sheet of paper he pulled from the dark suit jacket he wore over a white shirt and addressed Justice Lisa Wannamaker.
He apologized to court and said people learn from knowledge.
“I’ve learned from this,” he said, asking that the murder not define who he is.
The bizarreness of the encounter and the viciousness of the attack were captured on a neighbour’s doorbell camera. The boy is seen stopping and talking with Doney for a couple of minutes before pulling a knife from his briefcase and repeatedly stabbing her as she tried to retreat into her house.
Eleanor Doney is pictured with her husband, Bruce, in this undated Facebook photo.

He then continued walking down the street. A community warning was issued until the boy was identified to police by school administrators and arrested that night at his home.
At his sentencing hearing, both the Crown and the boy’s defence lawyer jointly asked for the maximum sentence allowable under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which is a 10-year sentence, split between six years in custody and four years of conditional supervision in the community, under an intensive rehabilitative custody and supervision order. Such an order is for enhanced rehabilitative programming for youth with serious mental health issues who committed serious crimes.

The two lawyers differed, however, on whether the year he has already been in custody waiting for his sentencing should be deducted from his sentence to be served.
Crown prosecutor Tammi D’Eri said the Crown had planned to ask court to have the boy tried and sentenced as an adult, but various psychological reports suggested they would not meet a new Supreme Court of Canada requirement of first proving a young offender had an adult-like maturity at the time of the offence.
Mental health problems and psychosocial deficits of the boy meant that hurdle likely could not be met, although he had suitable written and verbal skills and interactions with teachers and others.
“This was a completely unprovoked, random, extremely violent attack on an innocent woman cleaning up her yard on a spring day,” D’Eri said at the hearing which was packed by Doney’s family and friends, the boy’s parents and siblings, and journalists.
“This brutal attack occurred in Ms. Doney’s yard in the middle of the afternoon, a place where she was entitled to feel safe and likely did feel safe.”
D’Eri said the boy’s sentence must promote a sense of responsibility in him and acknowledge the harm done to the victims and the community.
She said it was “highly concerning” the boy displayed little insight into his violence and was inconsistent in his explanation for it. She said he continues to show persistent preoccupation with violence and serial killers.
He has also been the subject of several behavioural incident reports from the facility where he is incarcerated, she said, including an altercation with another resident which staff broke up.
After the incident, court heard, the boy said he “hasn’t felt this alive” since he murdered Doney.
This, D’Eri said, supports the Crown’s position that his risk of re-offending continues and that a lengthy sentence is necessary to try to address underlying issues, and that his time already served should not be deducted from his sentence to lengthen this process.
The Crown also asked for a lifetime weapons ban and an order to take his DNA for the government’s DNA bank.
Erin Dann, the boy’s lawyer, agreed her client committed a horrific, pre-meditated murder causing deep and lasting hurt to many people.
She asked that the boy be granted a year’s credit from his time already spent in custody. She said it would increase the likelihood he remains in a youth facility until his conditional release, which she said would aid his rehabilitation. Young offenders can typically remain in a youth facility until the age of 20. If he serves the extra year requested by the Crown, he will turn 21 before release and might be transferred to an adult prison.
By the time his sentence is complete, Dann said, it will be 2035 and his sentence period will account for more than 41 per cent of his life: “This is a considerable sentence for someone so young,” she said.

Her client has “high needs” for mental health treatment and psychosocial assistance for his rehabilitation and that five years in custody is a long time for someone his age, Dann said.
She said he has a “good capacity for rehabilitation.” He was assessed at a low to moderate risk to violently reoffend and that dropped to “likely low if his mental health is properly attended to and monitored.”
Dann said psychological assessments suggested his serial killer obsession and a lack of remorse and empathy likely stemmed from mental health problems and are not fixed attitudes.
“Because these risk factors relate to mental health concerns, there’s real potential here for rehabilitation and reintegration if properly addressed,” Dann said, and the youth facility, where he is engaged with the treatment programming, is the best place to meet that need.
Court earlier heard of the boy’s dark fixations .
Police seized two cell phones and a computer from his home that uncovered his vast online activity and intense interest in murder, serial killers, psychopathy and an obsession with a fictional serial killer from a Japanese comic book called Yoshikage Kira, as well as the real-life serial killer Ted Bundy.
It was the characteristics of the cartoon character that apparently influenced his unusual dress for a 14-year-old on the day of Doney’s murder.
On Tuesday, the boy sat quietly and mostly still in court listening to the detailed discussion of his history, behaviour, difficult upbringing, and mental health.
Court also heard that on the day before the stabbing, school officials had caught the boy with a knife and suspended him for five days. During two medical assessments prepared for the boy’s court appearances prior to his guilty plea, he told psychologists he had a fluctuating “urge to kill” in the weeks leading up to his attack.
There were 18 victim impact statements given to the judge.
The victim’s husband, Bruce Doney, said he and his wife had been together for 63 years and he misses her greatly and is looking forward to seeing her again in heaven, as both are devout Christians.
“I used to enjoy working in the garden with my wife with the flowers stretched over a couple of ponds and the songs of birds which returned to the birdhouse. Now it’s like a little bird has flown into a closed window and was killed. I can only put it now in a place where it rests, is buried and marked. I’ll never forget that little bird that I spent 63 years with,” Bruce Doney told court.
He requires a wheelchair and has significant vision loss, and his wife was his primary caregiver. He has since sold the home where Doney was killed.
He said he has forgiven his wife’s killer but still feared that if he is released from custody, because of his mental state, he would hurt someone else. “I wish the best for him,” he wrote, but also hopes the teen receives the treatment needed to prevent him committing other crimes in the future.
Brian Kirwin, Doney’s son-in-law, called the boy’s attack “cowardly” and “calculated.”
“By the heinous act committed it not only shattered Eleanor’s life but so many Eleanor had deeply impacted. This was all taken away in an instant for the utter senselessness of nothing short of cold-blooded murder…. The fear/worry/terror that was caused lasted, and still lasts, to this day. Safety and peace were stolen, not just from us who knew Eleanor but to all of our community and beyond. What is left is anxiety, stress, pain, hurt and fear.”
Jeff Doney said the violence that ended his mother’s life makes grief harder to cope with.
“The emotional impact of losing my mother has been profound and life-altering. Her death was sudden, violent, and hard to understand. She was attacked in front of her own home — a place where she should have felt safe and protected. The fact that her life was taken by a young offender is something I still struggle to make sense of,” he told court. “My mother was a sweet, gentle person whom everyone loved. She had a strong Christian faith that guided the way she lived her life. Helping others wasn’t just something she did — it was who she was.”
Judy Kirwin, Doney’s daughter, said her mother was her mentor and closest friend and support. “The loving relationship I enjoyed with my Mom was abruptly torn from me. I was violently robbed. Robbed of the chance to be with her at the end to say goodbye…. I am crushed and recoil in horror that Mom was left alone to die and found in front of her home by a neighbour. She was robbed of her dignity as a greatly loved human being.”
The hearing is scheduled to continue Wedenesday when Wannamaker is expected to deliver her sentencing decision.

Machete-wielding teen found guilty of killing woman who jumped to death after threat of torture
Story by Isabella Machin • 13h •

A teenager who made a terrified woman jump to her death from a 35ft-high balcony after threatening her with two machetes has been convicted of manslaughter.
Jaiden Hassan-Agard, 19, was found guilty of intimidating Tia Langdon, 25, to such an extent that she attempted to escape and fatally fell from a third-floor balcony.

Ms Langdon suffered a broken nose after Hassan-Agard punched her in the face. He then refused to let her or her friend Shannon McNeil leave the flat in Southampton, Hampshire.
Hassan-Agard, from Southampton, joined the women in the apartment on August 28, 2025, where they smoked marijuana and crack cocaine together.
The violent altercation broke out after Hassan-Agard accused the pair of stealing £250 worth of drugs.
Armed with two 'samurai swords', he subjected both women to a prolonged ordeal of intimidation, threats and violence.
Winchester Crown Court heard Ms Langdon was 'cowering in the corner' after being dragged back inside when she tried to flee on to the balcony.
In a 'hysterical state', Ms Langdon believed the only way to 'escape' was to leap 35ft from the balcony. She died in hospital the following day.

James Foster, specialist prosecutor, said Ms Langdon faced a 'situation which left her feeling as if she had no safe means of escape', forcing her on to the balcony for a second time.
The court heard Hassan-Agard was in a separate room giving Ms McNeil's dog a 'little stroke' when he heard shouting that 'she's jumped'.

He then stashed the drugs before fleeing the flat with Ms McNeil, whom he threatened and kidnapped so she would accompany him.
Hassan-Agard admitted 'he had drugs on him at the time, so he wanted to get out of there'.
After leaving the building, the perpetrator told the court the pair walked past Ms Langdon and suggested calling an ambulance.
However, they stopped after a neighbour shouted down that she had already called the emergency services.
The neighbour denied them ever offering to call an ambulance.
Hassan-Agard denied the women were 'terrified' of him and denied frightening Ms Langdon 'quite literally to death'.
He was found guilty of nine charges in total which also include false imprisonment, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, threats with a weapon in a private place, and threats to kill.
In relation to Ms McNeil, he was also convicted of kidnapping, false imprisonment, threats to kill, and threats with a weapon.

Mr Foster said after the verdict: 'Tia Langdon lost her life because of the fear, violence and intimidation caused by Jaiden Hassan-Agard's actions.
'He subjected Tia and another woman to threats and erratic behaviour, creating a situation which left her feeling as if she had no safe means of escape.
'While nobody witnessed the precise moment she fell, prosecutors proved that Hassan-Agard's conduct was a significant cause of the events which led to her death.
'He then compounded the suffering of those involved by refusing to seek emergency help and continuing to threaten and control the other victim in the aftermath.
'Our thoughts remain with Tia's family and loved ones, who have had to endure the devastating consequences of his actions.'

Lokasenna
Loki's Quarrel
Norse Mythology
English translation
Brief summary
When Loki is excluded from the feast in Ægir’s hall, where all the gods, except Thor, are celebrating – he forces his way in and demands a seat at the table. He then goes on to insult the gods one after another. In doing so the reader is entertained with the god’s misdoings and secrets. It’s not until Thor arrives, that Loki is silenced, when he is threatened with the mighty hammer, Mjöllnir.
An entertaining way of narrating the exploits of the gods, which were likely all well known to the listeners of the poem when performed in halls of old.
Literary source of Lokasenna
The poem is preserved in The Codex Regius (a.k.a. Elder Edda and Sæmundar-Edda). A manuscript which was written in the 1200s in Iceland and contains a collection of poems which are commonly referred to as the Poetic Edda. Lokasenna, along with the other Eddic poems, holds a great deal of information about Norse Mythology as well as other ancient lore.
In the manuscript, the poem comes after The Lay of Hymir (Old Norse: Hymiskviða) and before The Lay of Thrym (Old Norse: Þrymskviða).
About this translation
The translation of Lokasenna below is that of Benjamin Thorpe, who translated it from Old Norse to English back in the year 1865.
Here begins Lokasenna
Ægir, who is also name Gýmir, had brewed beer for the Æsir, after he had got the great kettle, as has been already related. To the entertainment came Odin and his wife Frigg. Thor did not come, being in the East, but his wife Sif was there, also Bragi and his wife Idun, and Tý, who was one-handed, Fenrisulf having bitten off his hand while being bound. Besides these were Niörd and his wife Skadi, Frey and Freyja, and Odin´s son Vidar. Loki too was there, and Frey´s attendants, Byggvir and Beyla. Many other Æsir and Alfar were also present.
Ægir had two servants, Fimafeng and Eldir. Bright gold was there used instead of fire-light. The beer served itself to the guests. The place was a great sanctuary. The guests greatly praised the excellence of Ægir´s servants. This Loki could not hear with patience, and so slew Fimafeng; whereupon the Æsir shook their shields, exclaimed against Loki, chased him into the forest, and then returned to drink. Loki came again, and found Eldir standing without, whom he thus addressed:
1
Tell me, Eldir!
ere thou thy foot settest
one step forward,
on what converse
the sons of the triumphant gods
at their potation?
2
Eldir
Of their arms converse,
and of their martial fame,
the sons of the triumphant gods.
Of the Æsir and the Alfar
that are here within
not one has a friendly word for thee.
3
Loki
I will go
into Ægir´s halls,
to see the compotation.
Strife and hate
to the Æsir´s sons I bear,
and will mix their mead with bale.
4
Eldir
Knowest thou not that if thou goest
into Ægir´s halls
to see the compotation,
but contumely and clamour
pourest forth on the kindly powers,
they will wipe it all off on thee.
5
Loki
Knowest thou not, Eldir,
that if we two
with bitter words contend,
I shall be rich
in answers,
if thou sayest too much?
Loki then went into the hall, but when those present saw who was come in, they all sat silent.
6
Loki
I Lopt am come thirsty
into this hall,
from a long journey,
to beseech the Æsir
one draught to give me
of the bright mead.
7
Why gods! are ye so silent,
so reserved,
that ye cannot speak?
A seat and place
choose for me at your board,
or bid me hie me hence.
8
Bragi
A seat and place
will the Æsir never
choose for thee at their board;
for well the Æsir know
for whom they ought to hold
a joyous compotation.
9
Loki
Odin! dost thou remember
when we in early days
blended our blood together?
When to taste beer
thou didst constantly refuse,
unless to both ´twas offered?
10
Odin
Rise up, Vidar!
and let the wolf´s sire
sit at our compotation;
that Loki may not utter
words of contumely
in Ægir´s hall.
Vidar then rising, presented Loki with drink, who before drinking thus addressed.
11
Hail, Æsir!
Hail, Asyniur!
And ye, all-holy gods!
all, save that one As,
who sits within there,
Bragi, on yonder bench.
12
Bragi
A horse and falchion
I from my stores will give thee,
and also with a ring reward thee,
if thou the Æsir wilt not
requite with malice.
Provoke not the gods against thee.
13
Loki
Of horse and rings
wilt thou ever, Bragi!
be in want.
Of the Æsir and the Alfar,
that are here present,
in conflict thou art the most backward,
and in the play of darts most timid.
14
Bragi
I know that were I without,
as I am now within,
the hall of Ægir,
I thy head would
bear in my hand,
and so for lying punish thee.
15
Loki
Valiant on thy seat art thou, Bragi!
but so thou shouldst not be,
Bragi, the bench´s pride!
Go and fight,
if thou art angry;
a brave man sits not considering.
16
Idun
I pray thee, Bragi!
let avail the bond of children,
and of all adopted sons,
and to Loki speak not
in reproachful words,
in Ægir´s hall.
17
Loki
Be silent, Idun!
of all women I declare thee
most fond of men,
since thou thy arms,
carefully washed, didst twine
round thy brother´s murderer.
18
Idun
Loki I address not
with opprobrious words,
in Ægir´s hall.
Bragi I soothe,
by beer excited.
I desire not that angry ye fight.
19
Gefion
Why will ye, Æsir twain,
here within,
strive with reproachful words?
Lopt perceives not
that he is deluded,
and is urged on by fate.
20
Loki
Be silent, Gefion!
I will now just mention,
how that fair youth
thy mind corrupted,
who thee a necklace gave,
and around whom thou thy limbs didst twine?
21
Odin
Thou art raving, Loki!
and hast lost thy wits,
in calling Gefion´s anger on thee;
for all men´s destinies,
I ween, she knows
as thoroughly as I do.
22
Loki
Be silent, Odin!
Thou never couldst allot
conflicts between men:
oft hast thou given to those
to whom thou oughtest not –
victory to cowards.
23
Odin
Knowest thou that I gave
to those I ought not –
victory to cowards?
Thou was eight winters
on the earth below,
a milch cow and a woman,
and didst there bear children.
Now that, methinks, betokens a base nature.
24
Loki
But, it is said, thou wentest
with tottering steps in Samsö,
and knocked at houses as a Vala.
In likeness of a fortune teller,
thou wentest among people;
Now that, methinks, betokens a base nature.
25
Frigg
Your doings
ye should never
publish among men,
what ye, Æsir twain,
did in days of yore.
Ever forgotten be men´s former deeds!
26
Loki
Be thou silent, Frigg!
Thou art Fjörgyn´s daughter,
and ever hast been fond of men,
since Ve and Vili, it is said,
thou, Vidrir´s wife, didst
both to thy bosom take.
27
Frigg
Know thou that if I had,
a Ægir´s halls,
a son like Baldr,
out thou shouldst not go
from the Æsir´s sons:
thou should’st have been fiercely assailed.
28
Loki
But wilt thou, Frigg!
that of my wickedness
I more recount?
I am the cause
that thou seest not
Baldr riding to the halls.
29
Freyja
Mad art thou, Loki!
in recounting
thy foul misdeeds.
Frigg, I believe,
knows all that happens,
although she says it not.
30
Loki
Be thou silent, Freyja!
I know thee full well;
thou art not free from vices:
of the Æsir and the Alfar,
that are herein,
each has been thy paramour.
31
Freyja
False is thy tongue.
Henceforth it will, I think,
prate no good to thee.
Wroth with thee are the Æsir,
and the Asyniur.
Sad shalt thou home depart.
32
Loki
Be silent, Freyja!
Thou art a sorceress,
and with much evil blended;
since against thy brother thou
the gentle powers excited.
And then, Freyja! what didst thou do?
33
Niörd
It is no great wonder,
if silk-clad dames
get themselves husbands, lovers;
but ´tis a wonder that a wretched As,
that has borne children,
should herein enter.
34
Loki
Be silent, Niörd!
Thou wast sent eastward hence,
a hostage from the gods.
Hýmir´s daughter had thee
for a utensil,
and flowed into thy mouth.
35
Niörd
´Tis to me a solace,
as I a long way hence
was sent, a hostage from the gods,
that I had a son,
whom no one hates,
and accounted is a chief among the Æsir.
36
Loki
Cease now, Niörd!
in bounds contain thyself;
I will no longer keep it secret:
it was with thy sister
thou hadst such a son;
hardly worse than thyself.
37
Tý
Frey is best
of all the exalted gods
in the Æsir´s courts:
no maid he makes to weep,
no wife of man,
and from bonds looses all.
38
Loki
Be silent, Tý!
Thou couldst never settle
a strife ´twixt two;
of thy right hand also
I must mention make,
which Fenrir from thee tore.
39
Tý
I of a hand am wanting,
but thou of honest fame;
sad is the lack of either.
Nor is the wolf at ease:
he in bonds must bide,
until the gods´destruction.
40
Loki
Be silent, Tý;
to thy wife it happened
to have a son by me.
Nor rag nor penny ever
hadst thou, poor wretch!
for this injury.
41
Frey
I the wolf see lying
at the river´s mouth,
until the powers are swept away.
So shalt thou be bound,
if thou art not silent,
thou framer of evil.
42
Loki
With gold thou boughtest
Gýmir´s daughter,
and so gavest away thy sword:
but when Muspell´s sons
through the dark forest ride,
thou, unhappy, wilt not
have wherewith to fight.
43
Byggvir
Know that were I of noble race,
like Ingun´s Frey,
and had so fair a dwelling,
than marrow softer I would bray
that ill-boding crow,
and crush him limb by limb.
44
Loki
What little thing is that I see
wagging its tail,
and snapping eagerly?
At the ears of Frey
thou shouldst ever be,
and clatter under mills.
45
Byggvir
Byggvir I am named,
and am thought alert,
by all gods and men;
therefore am I joyful here,
that all the sons of Hropt
drink beer together.
46
Loki
Be silent, Byggvir!
Thou couldst never
dole out food to men,
when, lying in thy truckle bed,
thou wast not to be found,
while men were fighting.
47
Heimdall
Loki, thou art drunk,
and hast lost thy wits.
Why dost thou not leave off, Loki?
But drunkenness
so rules every man,
that he knows not of his garrulity.
48
Loki
Be silent, Heimdall!
For thee in early days
was that hateful life decreed:
with a wet back
thou must ever be,
and keep watch as guardian of the gods.
49
Skadi
Thou art merry, Loki!
Not long wilt thou
frisk with an unbound tail;
for thee, on a rock´s point,
with the entrails of thy ice-cold son,
the gods will bind.
50
Loki
Know, if on a rock´s point,
with the entrails of my ice-cold son,
the gods will bind me,
that first and foremost
I was at the slaying,
when we assailed Thiassi.
51
Skadi
Know, if first and foremost
thou wast at the slaying,
when ye assailed Thiassi,
that from my dwellings
and fields shall to thee
ever cold counsels come.
52
Loki
Milder was thou of speech
to Laufey´s son,
when to thy bed thou didst invite me.
Such matters must be mentioned,
if we accurately must
recount our vices.
Then Sif came forth, and poured out mead for Loki in an icy cup, saying:
53
Hail to thee, Loki!
and this cool cup receive,
full of old mead:
at least me alone,
among the blameless Æsir race,
leave stainless.
He took the horn, drank, and said:
54
So alone shouldst thou be,
hadst thou strict and prudent been
towards thy mate;
but one I know,
and, I think, know him well,
a favoured rival of Hlorridi,
and that is the wily Loki.
55
Beyla
The fells all tremble:
I think Hlorridi
is from journeying home.
He will bid be quiet
him who here insults
all gods and men.
56
Loki
Be silent, Beyla!
Thou art Byggvir´s wife,
and with much evil mingled:
never came a greater monster
among the Æsir´s sons.
Thou art a dirty strumpet.
Thor then came in and said:
57
Silence, thou impure being!
My mighty hammer, Mjöllnir,
shall stop thy prating.
I will thy head
from thy neck strike;
then will thy life be ended.
58
Loki
Now the son of earth
is hither come.
Why dost thou chafe so, Thor?
Thou wilt not dare do so,
when with the wolf thou hast to fight,
and he the all-powerful father swallows whole.
59
Thor
Silence, thou impure being!
My mighty hammer, Mjöllnir,
shall stop thy prating.
Up I will hurl thee
to the east region,
and none shall see thee after.
60
Loki
Of thy eastern travels
thou shouldst never
to people speak,
since in a glove-thumb
thou, Einheri! wast doubled up,
and hardly thoughtest thou was Thor.
61
Thor
Silence, thou impure being!
My mighty hammer, Mjöllnir,
shall stop thy prating;
with this right hand I, Hrugnir´s bane,
will smite thee,
so that thy every bone be broken.
62
Loki
´Tis my intention
a long life to live,
though with thy hammer
thou dost threaten me.
Skrymir´s thongs
seemed to thee hard,
when at the food thou couldst not get,
when, in full health, of hunger dying.
63
Thor
Silence, thou impure being!
My mighty hammer, Mjöllnir,
shall stop thy prating.
Hrungnir´s bane
shall cast thee down to Hel,
beneath the grating of the dead.
64
Loki
I have said before the Æsir,
I have said before the Æsir´s sons,
that which my mind suggested:
but for thee alone
will I go out;
because I know that thou wilt fight.
65
Ægir! thou hast brewed beer;
but thou never shalt henceforth
a compotation hold.
All thy possessions,
which are herein,
flame shall play over,
and on thy back shall burn thee.
After this Loki, in the likeness of a salmon, cast himself into the waterfall of Franangr, where the Æsir caught him, and bound him with the entrails of his son Nari; but his other son, Narfi, was changed into a wolf. Skadi took a venomous serpent, and fastened it up over Loki’s face. The venom trickled down from it. Sigyn, Loki’s wife, sat by, and held a basin under the venom; and when the basin was full, carried the venom out. Meanwhile the venom dropped on Loki, who shrank from it so violently that the whole earth trembled. This causes what are not called earthquakes.

Reading Neil Gaiman's Norse Gods - here is his description of Loki
Loki is very handsome. He is plausible, convincing, likable, and far and away the most wily, subtle, and shrewd of all the inhabitants of Asgard. It is a pity, then, that there is so much darkness inside him: so much anger, so much envy, so much lust.
Loki is the son of Laufey, who was also known as Nal, or needle, because she was slim and beautiful and sharp. His father was said to be Farbauti, a giant; his name means “he who strikes dangerous blows,” and Farbauti was as dangerous as his name.
Loki walks in the sky with shoes that fly, and he can transform his shape so he looks like other people, or change into animal form, but his real weapon is his mind. He is more cunning, subtler, trickier than any god or giant. Not even Odin is as cunning as Loki.
Loki is Odin’s blood brother. The other gods do not know when Loki came to Asgard, or how. He is Thor’s friend and Thor’s betrayer. He is tolerated by the gods, perhaps because his stratagems and plans save them as often as they get them into trouble.
Loki makes the world more interesting but less safe. He is the father of monsters, the author of woes, the sly god.
Loki drinks too much, and he cannot guard his words or his thoughts or his deeds when he drinks. Loki and his children will be there for Ragnarok, the end of everything, and it will not be on the side of the gods of Asgard that they will fight.
I thought interesting to share - I love the bit that he gets drunk and loses control. Exactly what he did on Lamentis. I like that the show seems to be inspired from Norse mythology, not only from Marvel comics.

Psychiatrist Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron led the Allan Memorial Institute, a psychiatric hospital in Montreal, in the 1950s and 60s. Cameron was at the top of his field at the time, leading both the American Psychiatric Association and the World Psychiatric Association. Little did the families whose loved ones were sent to Allan Memorial know that Cameron’s patients would be subject to grueling experimentation involving long periods of induced sleep and heavy use of electroshock therapy and psychedelic drugs.
Meanwhile, in America, the CIA was conducting its own brainwashing experiments on unwitting human guinea pigs. It was later uncovered that Dr. Cameron’s work in Montreal was being partially funded by the CIA. Now, 50 years later, the families of Dr. Cameron’s victims are finding each other, organizing, and bringing lawsuits against the Canadian and American governments.
Co-hosts Johnson and Sivertson interview families, legal experts, and historians about the dark history of government-supported brainwashing experimentation and the consequences it continues to have in society. Discussions around MK-ULTRA on Reddit, including in the r/askhistorians
community, inspired the series theme.

Avengers: Doomsday to change Loki's Season 2 Ending?
Screen Rant mentioned that Loki's journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appeared to reach a fitting conclusion in the Season 2 finale of Loki. After years of growth and self-discovery, the God of Mischief sacrificed his freedom to become the God of Stories and assumed the responsibility of sustaining the multiverse. This conclusion was widely acclaimed, as it gave the character a purpose beyond power and conquest while also providing an emotional farewell.
However, Marvel's decision to bring Tom Hiddleston back for Avengers: Doomsday raises questions about how permanent that ending really was. If Loki returns to interact with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the film may have to revisit or expand upon the role he accepted at the end of the Disney+ series. What was once viewed as the final chapter of his story could now become the beginning of a new one.

Loki may finally reunite with familiar MCU heroes
Another major change involves Loki's relationships with other MCU characters. The variant seen in Loki never shared the same experiences as the original version who fought alongside Thor and eventually died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. As a result, there are still several unresolved dynamics that the franchise can explore.

Why AstroPix Could Change The Future Of Gamma-Ray Astronomy
Gamma rays represent the highest-energy form of light known to science. They are produced by extreme cosmic environments, including powerful stellar explosions, intense solar activity, and violent collisions occurring billions of light-years away. Detecting these signals is one of the most effective ways to investigate the universe’s most energetic processes, yet certain energy ranges remain difficult to study with existing instruments.
AstroPix was designed specifically to address part of that challenge. The detectors are capable of measuring gamma rays between 20,000 and 700,000 electron volts, a range that extends far beyond visible light. Scientists are particularly interested in improving sensitivity around the region between 500,000 and 1 million electron volts, where many gamma-ray bursts emit some of their strongest radiation. This energy range is also expected to contain valuable information about distant active galaxies powered by enormous black holes. By eventually combining multiple AstroPix detectors into larger instruments, researchers could create future observatories capable of examining these events with far greater precision. Such advances would provide new clues about how matter behaves under extreme conditions and how some of the universe’s most powerful engines generate enormous amounts of energy.
Each AstroPix chip has four silicon pixel gamma-ray detectors. Each of these detectors incorporates 1,225 pixels. A Rare Opportunity To Test The Technology In Orbit
For experimental space technologies, reaching orbit is often one of the most difficult milestones. Many demonstrations are limited to balloon flights or sounding rockets, which provide only brief exposure to space-like conditions. AstroPix is receiving a far more valuable opportunity: an extended test aboard an orbital mission.
“The Fly Foundational Robots spacecraft is also a technology demonstration, so the projects were a good fit for each other,” said Dan Violette, an AstroPix team member and post-doctoral fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
“We need to thoroughly test AstroPix’s performance before we can use the sensors in future science missions. We’ve flown comparable technologies on a scientific balloon mission, and the current prototype eventually will be part of a sounding rocket payload. Many of those flight opportunities only reach near space, though. It’s not often that technology demonstrations like ours can find a ride into orbit.”
The orbital environment will allow engineers to evaluate detector performance under realistic operating conditions while collecting valuable scientific data. The experience gained from this mission could influence the design of future gamma-ray observatories and determine whether AstroPix becomes part of larger scientific spacecraft later in the decade. For technology developers, orbital validation is often the difference between a promising prototype and a mission-ready instrument.

How A Robotic Spacecraft Will Carry And Operate The Experiment
The AstroPix demonstration, officially called the AstroPix Satellite Technology dEmonstration Payload or A-STEP, will be installed inside an Orbital Replacement Unit developed by Rocket Lab Robotics. The payload will not simply ride into space; it will become part of a broader robotic servicing demonstration designed to showcase how spacecraft components can be moved and replaced while in orbit.
A robotic arm supplied by Rocket Lab Robotics will reposition the Orbital Replacement Unit during flight before AstroPix begins collecting data. The concept reflects a growing interest across the space industry in developing spacecraft that can be upgraded rather than replaced entirely. Such capabilities could dramatically extend mission lifetimes and reduce operational costs.
Each AstroPix chip contains four silicon gamma-ray detectors, and every detector includes 1,225 individual pixels. The architecture resembles imaging sensors used in smartphones, though it is optimized for detecting high-energy radiation rather than visible light. The payload includes all supporting electronics needed for power distribution, data collection, and communications while operating in orbit.
NASA’s Broader Goal: Building Upgradeable Spacecraft
The mission is not only about astronomy. It also serves as a testbed for technologies that could reshape how future satellites are maintained and improved after launch.
“The unit already had the volume, power, and data needed to support the AstroPix team’s design,” said Bo Naasz, senior technical lead, In-space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing in the Space Technology Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “One of our major goals with Fly Foundational Robots is to demonstrate robotic changeout of payloads in orbit, enabling upgrades or improvements to satellites and space instruments at a fraction of the cost of a full mission. Allowing AstroPix to complete its own technology demonstration in orbit is a bonus.”
As highlighted by NASA, the ability to replace instruments in space could significantly alter the economics of exploration and scientific research. Rather than launching entirely new missions whenever better technology becomes available, future spacecraft could receive upgraded components through robotic servicing operations. That approach could accelerate innovation while reducing costs for both scientific and commercial missions.

Scientists use supercomputer simulations to investigate what came before the big bang

For decades, one of the biggest questions in cosmology has remained frustratingly out of reach: what, if anything, existed before the Big Bang? Now, researchers are using advanced computational techniques based on Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity to investigate regions of cosmic history that were once considered inaccessible. A major review published in Living Reviews in Relativity highlights how numerical relativity is becoming a powerful tool for probing the universe’s earliest moments and testing ideas that previously existed largely in the realm of speculation.
Why The Earliest Universe Has Been So Difficult To Study
The challenge begins with a fundamental limitation in modern cosmology. When scientists use Einstein’s equations to trace the universe backward in time, they eventually encounter a singularity, a point where density, temperature, and curvature become effectively infinite. At that boundary, the mathematical framework that successfully describes planets, stars, galaxies, and black holes stops providing meaningful answers. As a result, questions surrounding the origin of the universe have often remained beyond the reach of direct scientific testing.
Traditional cosmological models simplify the universe by assuming it is smooth and uniform on large scales. This approach has been remarkably successful in explaining many observations, including the large-scale structure of the cosmos and the properties of the cosmic microwave background. Yet conditions in the very early universe were likely far more chaotic. Gravity may have been operating in environments filled with extreme density fluctuations, violent distortions of spacetime, and highly uneven distributions of matter. Under such circumstances, the standard approximations begin to break down, leaving researchers with incomplete tools for understanding what truly happened near the beginning of cosmic history.
That limitation has fueled decades of debate over competing theories, including cosmic inflation, cyclic universes, bouncing cosmologies, and other models attempting to explain how the universe emerged into its current state.

How Numerical Relativity Is Opening New Territory
The growing field of numerical relativity offers a way forward. Rather than relying solely on equations that can be solved analytically, researchers use powerful computers to approximate solutions in situations that are too complex for conventional mathematics. This technique has already transformed astrophysics by helping scientists model black hole mergers and predict the gravitational wave signals later detected by observatories such as LIGO.

The same computational strategy is now being applied to cosmology. Instead of assuming perfect symmetry, scientists can simulate highly irregular universes and observe how they evolve under the full framework of Einstein’s theory. This allows researchers to examine whether proposed models of the early universe remain stable under realistic conditions or collapse when subjected to the complexities of gravity.
As researcher David Lim explains, “You can search around the lamppost, but you can’t go far beyond the lamppost, where it’s dark—you just can’t solve those equations. Numerical relativity allows you to explore regions away from the lamppost.”
That analogy captures a central goal of the field. Scientists have long been able to investigate the parts of cosmology illuminated by manageable mathematics. Numerical relativity is enabling them to move beyond those limits and explore regions that were previously hidden from scientific inquiry.

Testing Ideas About A Universe Before The Big Bang
One of the most intriguing possibilities involves theories suggesting thatthe Big Bang was not the absolute beginning of everything. Some models propose that the universe experiences recurring cycles of contraction and expansion. Others suggest that a previous cosmic phase collapsed before rebounding into the expanding universe observed today.
These concepts have often faced a major obstacle: proving whether they can actually work under realistic physical conditions. A theory may appear elegant on paper while failing when gravity, inhomogeneities, and relativistic effects are fully included. Numerical relativity provides a way to perform those tests.
According to the review published inLiving Reviews in Relativity, these simulations may help determine whether bounce scenarios remain mathematically stable, whether inflation can emerge naturally from chaotic initial conditions, and whether alternative origin theories leave observable signatures that astronomers could eventually detect.
Researchers are also using these methods to investigate phenomena such as cosmic strings, primordial black holes, bubble collisions, and the turbulent period known as preheating that may have followed cosmic inflation. Many of these processes could leave traces in gravitational waves or subtle patterns within the cosmic microwave background, creating potential opportunities for future observational tests.
Bridging Two Scientific Communities
The review highlights another challenge beyond the technical aspects of the simulations themselves. Historically, cosmologists and numerical relativists have often worked in separate research communities despite sharing common interests in understanding gravity and cosmic evolution.
The authors argue that stronger collaboration between these fields could accelerate progress on some of cosmology’s deepest mysteries. Numerical relativists possess expertise in solving Einstein’s equations under extreme conditions, while cosmologists bring detailed knowledge of observational data and theoretical models describing the universe.
Lim emphasized the importance of building that connection. “We hope to actually develop that overlap between cosmology and numerical relativity so that numerical relativists who are interested in using their techniques to explore cosmological problems can go ahead and do it,” says Lim. “And cosmologists who are interested in solving some of the questions they cannot solve, can use numerical relativity.”
Such collaboration may prove essential as simulations become increasingly sophisticated and computational resources continue to expand. The ability to combine theoretical predictions with observational evidence could help transform long-standing philosophical questions into scientifically testable hypotheses.

Beverly Oliver
Beverly Oliver
Beverly Oliver was born in 1946. She worked as a dancer at the Colony Club. It was next to the Carousel Club (owned by Jack Ruby).
Oliver claims she was standing on the south side of Elm Street when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. She was therefore one of the closest witnesses to the shot that killed Kennedy. She filmed the motorcade with a Super-8 Yashica movie camera but claimed that it was taken away by a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent on 25th November and she never saw it again. Oliver later identified Regis Kennedy as the FBI agent who took the film from her. However, Kennedy was in New Orleans at that time interviewing Jack Martin.
Oliver left Dallas soon after the assassination and went into hiding (Oliver claimed she feared she would be murdered if she remained in the city).
In 1970 Oliver married the mobster George McGann. Soon afterwards he was murdered by fellow gangsters. Later Oliver gave an interview to Gary Mack. She claimed that in 1963 she was a regular visitor to the Carousel Club and that Jack Ruby introduced her to Lee Harvey Oswald. Oliver also claimed to have seen David Ferrie and Jack Lawrence in the club.

(1) John McAdams, Beverly Oliver: Babushka Babe? Or Bamboozling the Buffs? (2002)
One of the enigmatic figures in Dealey Plaza in the moments when John Kennedy was murdered was "The Babushka Lady," so named because she wore a scarf much like a Russian grandmother would wear.
She appears to be filming the motorcade, perhaps with an amateur movie camera, but she did not identify herself to law enforcement on the day of the assassination. And in the days and weeks following the assassination, no person turned up claiming to be her, and no film shot from her position was discovered.
In 1970 a woman named Beverly Oliver came forward, and in interviews with researcher J. Gary Shaw, claimed to have been the Babushka Lady. She was a dancer and singer (although apparently not a stripper) at the Colony Club, a strip joint that competed with Jack Ruby's Carousel Club. She claims to have spent considerable time in the Carousel Club, and to have known Jack Ruby well. Over the years, her story has been elaborated to include many elements which, if true, imply a conspiracy to murder Kennedy.
(2) Ian Griggs, Where Were You When the President Was Shot, Beverly? (May, 1999)
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding witnesses to the Kennedy assassination concerns a mysterious young woman who became known as The Babushka Lady. She can be seen clearly on the Zapruder film and also on various other movie films and still photographs taken in Dealey Plaza on 22nd November 1963. She was one of the few witnesses who was not immediately identified - thus the rather odd nickname which she acquired due to the 'babushka' or triangular headscarf which she was wearing that day.
The question which The Babushka Lady provokes has become much more than just: "Who is she?" It has become much more positive: "Are The Babushka Lady and Beverly Oliver one and the same person?" Undoubtedly, the most important aspect of The Babushka Lady is the fact that she appears to be filming the motorcade. Her position on the south side of Elm Street close to eyewitnesses Charles Brehm, Jean Hill, Mary Moorman, etc. means that her film would almost certainly be a mirror image of the Z-Film. Perhaps more important than the presidential limousine itself would be what could be seen behind it. The background to The Babushka Lady's film would inevitably include the Texas School Book Depository (perhaps including the so-called sniper's nest window) and the grassy knoll.
The question of The Babushka Lady's identity remained a total mystery following the death of the President. Nobody came forward to claim that they were the mysterious eyewitness and furthermore, nobody could suggest who the lady may have been. There it remained, and perhaps would have continued to remain, were it not for a chance meeting between renowned assassination researcher J Gary Shaw and a young lady called Beverly McGann shortly after a church service at the First Baptist Church of Joshua (a small Texas town 20 miles south of Fort Worth) in November 1970.
The aftermath of this meeting is widely known and has been well-documented in many books. Beverly McGann (nee Oliver) related to Gary Shaw how she had filmed the motorcade and the assassination from a point on the south side of Elm Street. As anybody who knows Gary would be aware, he did not just accept this stranger's story without question. No - being aware that she had not had an opportunity to see the Zapruder film (and The Babushka Lady), he took her to Dealey Plaza and asked her to indicate exactly where she had been standing on the fateful day. To Gary's amazement, she did not hesitate but went straight to the point where The Babushka Lady can be seen on the Z-Film.
The controversy over Beverly Oliver's claim to be The Babushka Lady has raged unabated from that day to this - and remains one of the most vehemently debated aspects of the Kennedy assassination mystery. Whilst there are parts of Beverly's account which I find difficult to understand, I firmly believe that Beverly Oliver and The Babushka Lady are one and the same person. Like many researchers of my acquaintance, on both sides of the Atlantic, I have frequently become involved in heated discussions (arguments?) concerning this question. I am delighted to report that no matter how involved some of these discussions have become, I have not yet ended up exchanging blows with anybody.
I have something of an advantage over many researchers, particularly those outside the United States, in that I have had the pleasure and privilege to meet Beverly Oliver and her husband Charles Massegee on several occasions. I like to think that we trust and respect one another and I am proud to call Beverly Oliver my friend. Perhaps it may be thought that this tends to colour my opinion that Beverly was The Babushka Lady. I would refute that and stress that by speaking with Beverly regularly over the past couple of years I have come to know someone who is, in my opinion, one of the most open and honest people I have ever encountered.
Assassination of John F. Kennedy Encyclopedia
(3) Beverly Oliver, testimony (18th November, 1994)
I was a 17-year-old girl that was at Dealey Plaza that day taking pictures of the President when he was assassinated. I never wanted to become a public figure over this. I never intended to. Until my name was accidentally leaked to the press in 1972, I was not a public figure. It has caused me great grief. It has caused me a lot of concern in my life.
I have been called a liar as recently as today. I have been called a hoax. I am neither a liar nor am I a hoax. I am who I say I am. I was down there that day standing between 20 and 30 feet from the President when he was shot. I was taking a movie film which on the 25th of November was confiscated by a man who identified himself as an FBI agent.
I have never until recently started trying to inquire about my film because I am extremely patriotic, did not see that there was any reason to because I had assumed all these years that it was locked up until the year 2029 as evidence, and I am still not sure that there is anything sinister about it, and that is why I am here. I would just like an explanation as to what happened to my film and where it is, and that is the only reason that I am here.

Jean Hill
Jean Hill
Jean Hill was born in 1931. She worked as a teacher in Oklahoma City before moving to a Dallas school in 1962. On 22nd November, 1963, Hill, watched the motorcade of President John F. Kennedy from the grassy knoll facing the Texas School Depository Building. Hill and her friend, Mary Moorman, who was taking Polaroid pictures of the motorcade, were only a few feet away from President John F. Kennedy when he was shot. Hill and Moorman thought the shots had come from behind her on the grassy knoll and as soon as the firing stopped they ran towards the wooden fence in an attempt to find the gunman. Hill claims that they were detained by two secret service men. After searching the two women they confiscated the picture of the assassination.
Hill gave a statement to the police where she stated: "Mary Moorman started to take a picture. We were looking at the president and Jackie in the back seat... Just as the president looked up two shots rang out and I saw the president grab his chest and fell forward across Jackie's lap... There was an instant pause between two shots and the motorcade seemingly halted for an instant. Three or four more shots rang out and the motorcade sped away."
Shirley Martin telephoned Hill on 25th January, 1964. She told Martin that as soon as the firing stopped they ran towards the wooden fence in an attempt to find the gunman. However, they were detained by two secret service men. After searching the two women they confiscated the picture of the assassination. Hill told Martin that she was very scared as another witness, Warren Reynolds, had been shot in the head by an unknown assailant, the night before: "Mrs Hill told me that she and Miss Moorman had received many threatening phone calls urging them to keep quiet and when they reported these to the Dallas police, they received an official brush-off. Mrs. Hill said Miss Moorman would not talk to me as she was much more frightened and upset over the whole thing than Mrs. Hill was."
Hill later gave evidence to the Warren Commission that was highly controversial. She claimed that she heard between four and six shots. Hill was also convinced that some of the shots came the grassy knoll. In interviews on television after the assassination Hill said she saw "a little white dog" in the rear seat of the president's car. As there was no dog in the car, the reliability of Hill's witness statement was undermined. However, 25 years later, it was revealed that a small white stuffed animal was on the back seat of the car. A child had presented it to Jackie Kennedy at the beginning of the tour of Dallas. This information was suppressed in order to discredit Hill as a reliable witness.
The Zapruder Film film shows the position of Jean Hill (left) and Mary Moorman when John F. Kennedy was shot.

Jean Hill told Mark Lane: "The FBI was here for days. They practically lived here. They just didn't like what I told them I saw and heard when the President was assassinated. She declined to permit a filmed interview, stating, for two years I have told the truth, but I have two children to support and I am a public school teacher. My principal said it would be best not to talk about the assassination, and I just can't go through it all again. I can't believe the Warren Report. I know it's all a lie, because I was there when it happened, but I can't talk about it anymore because I don't want the FBI here constantly and I want to continue to teach here. I hope you don't think I'm a coward, but I cannot talk about the case anymore."
Assassination of John F. Kennedy Encyclopedia
For many years Hill refused to give interviews about the John Kennedy assassination. However, in 1990, Hill agreed to work as a technical adviser on Oliver Stone's motion picture, JFK. The following year she revealed what happened after the assassination: "They (Secret Service agents) took me to the Records Building and we went up to a room on the fourth floor. There were two guys sitting there on the other side of a table looking out a window that overlooked the killing zone, where you could see all of the goings on. You got the impression that they had been sitting there for a long time. They asked me what I had seen, and it became clear that they knew what I had seen. They asked me how many shots I had heard and I told them four to six. And they said, No, you didn't. There were three shots. We have three bullets and that's all we're going to commit to now. I said, Well, I know what I heard, and they told me, What you heard were echoes. You would be very wise to keep your mouth shut. Well, I guess I've never been that wise. I know the difference between firecrackers, echoes, and gunshots. I'm the daughter of a game ranger, and my father took me shooting all my life." In 1992 Hill published her book on the case, JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness.
Jean Hill, who worked as a schoolteacher in Dallas for over twenty years, died on 7th November, 2000.

Mary Benson, who has died aged 80, will best be remembered for her long, devoted work for the independence of African states, and, particularly, against apartheid in her native South Africa. She was to become friend, confidante and biographer of Nelson Mandela - but this was a complete change of direction from the ambitions of her early life.
She grew up in a comfortable, happy home in Pretoria, younger daughter of Cyril Benson, Irish administrator of the Pretoria General Hospital, and his wife, Lucy Stubbs, descended from 1820 settlers in the Eastern Cape, and with all the colour prejudices of the English-speaking white South African of the time.
Mary was a romantic, stage-struck child of passionate determination who, at about 18, succeeded in leaving provincial Pretoria in search of a stage or film career. In London and California, as an ardent fan, she encountered many of the stars, but before she found any personal success the approach of war drove her home. Briefly she was a secretary in the British High Commission. Then, still seeking wider shores, she joined the SA Women's Auxiliary Army Service.
In 1942, Benson was in Egypt. Attractive, intelligent, capable and hard-working, she soon was promoted to captain and served as PA to a series of distinguished commanders. There were two unhappy love affairs. She also served in Algeria and Italy, where she lured a production of The Barretts Of Wimpole Street, with old acquaintances Brian Aherne and Katherine Cornell, from Naples to play to the troops in Siena. Then there was work with United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) in Athens and Vienna.
After the war, Benson returned to her interest in films and became secretary to David Lean, whose Brief Encounter was showing in London.
Benson had a great capacity for making - and keeping - friends, and there were many of them in Britain, America and Africa. She seized an opportunity to return to America and tried to improve her prospects of writing for the screen. But then she read Alan Paton's Cry The Beloved Country (1948) and, extremely moved by it, wrote to him, beginning a life-long friendship. The book awakened her sense of "African-ness" and set her thinking of the life of her black fellow South Africans, realising that while working to alleviate the suffering and dreadful deprivations in postwar Europe, she had never considered the parallel conditions endured by millions of South African blacks. She began to feel that it was there that she should be working.
With this in mind, she left the US. In London, however, she attended a meeting addressed by the Reverend Michael Scott, an Anglican priest of whose work in South Africa and the UN she vaguely remembered hearing. She was immediately in thrall. Asking if she could be of use, she was installed in a dark little room with piles of assorted papers which she quickly reduced to order. So began a seven-year partnership, and return to South Africa was delayed.
Scott at this time was much involved in lobbying the UN on behalf of certain South West African tribes, particularly the Herero and the Nama, who were bitterly opposed to the projected incorporation of their lands into South Africa. Benson, now working for and with African people, found her racial prejudices fade.
She became Scott's right hand, writing, speaking, lobbying, her wartime organising experience, writing ability and "way" with people being invaluable. Scott's health was very fragile and Mary had often to deputise. Together, and with such figures as Lord Hemingford and David Astor of the Observer, they launched the Africa Bureau in 1952. Its purpose was to inform the British public on African affairs, to enable African leaders to discuss their problems with colonial authorities and to build up support for independence movements.
Benson was involved in opposing British colonial policy in forming the Central African Federation and in lobbying for reforms in the High Commission Territories (Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland). In 1951, when the exiled Tshekedi Khama of the then Bechuanaland (Botswana) came to Britain to negotiate for his return home, she acted as his secretary, the first African she had ever worked for. She came to know him and his family very well. And, some years later, after his untimely death, she undertook his biography, thus beginning her writing career.
Benson returned to South Africa in 1956, ending her partnership and deep personal relationship with Scott and the Africa Bureau. The Treason Trial of 156 South Africans of all races had begun, and she was asked to take over the office of the Treason Trial Defence Fund. This enabled her to meet many of the opponents of apartheid and gain a first-hand insight into the conditions under which the majority of the people lived.
But deteriorating health forced her resignation, and she went into her father's old hospital in Pretoria, where her illness was diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis. Cortisone was prescribed, and though it provided no cure, it effectively held the disease at bay and enabled her to continue her punishing career with enormous and determined courage for many years.
Meeting so many of the people's leaders gathered in Johannesburg for the trial encouraged her to embark on the hitherto unrecorded history of the African National Congress. She travelled round the country, interviewed many of the older members (Mweli Skota and Canon Calata among them), founders or early officers, and gathered their life stories.
When Chief Luthuli was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she went to Natal to act as his secretary. She had secret interviews with Nelson Mandela, then known as the "Black Pimpernel", while he was underground in 1961. In 1964, she had many clandestine meetings with Bram Fischer, the distinguished Afrikaner advocate and one-time leader of the South African Communist party, whom she warmly admired. He had also gone underground to continue his anti-apartheid political work, and through him Mary began to learn about the Afrikaans. All this time she was also attending political trials in remote parts of the country and reporting them overseas.
In 1963, she was in the US, invited by the United Nations to testify (the first South African to do so) to the Committee on Apartheid, thus inviting the wrath of the South African government. She travelled in the south of the country, meeting many of the black anti-segregation leaders. The next year, after the Rivonia arrests in South Africa, she was back at the UN to testify, particularly about the men on trial, many of whom she knew.
In South Africa, Benson had become deeply interested in the work of the playwright Athol Fugard, who was working for a non-racial theatre, and for breaking the cultural barriers of apartheid. Once again, her latent theatrical interests were aroused and she co-operated with Fugard in the production of his work in Britain and America as well as in South Africa.
But this freedom in her own country could not last: in 1966, the authorities imposed a banning order. Unable to move about the country, to meet people, to write or speak in public, she realised she had to leave. She returned there once more, heavily restricted, to be with her father while he was dying.
In London, where she settled, she devoted herself to writing. In addition to her two invaluable volumes on the history of the ANC (unique because she was able to interview many now dead), she published a novel At The Still Point (1969) and an autobiography, A Far Cry (1989); for radio she wrote a play and several documentaries, and she frequently broadcast on political developments in South Africa. The stage-struck schoolgirl eventually was able (in a very unforeseen form) to return to her early love - of drama - and combine it with the later love - of her people, white and black.
She is survived by a sister.
Ross Devenish writes: I first became aware of the name Mary Benson when as a boy I read a front-page story in my father's newspaper. I deciphered this story about a woman who had addressed the United Nations about somewhere called South West Africa. I asked my father who the woman was.
When I finally got to meet Mary Benson, through Athol Fugard, another surprise was in store for me. She was not just interested in developments in Africa, but her concerns and friendships ranged far and wide. Not just writers, but actors, directors, scientists, astronomers, politicians and journalists. She was a renaissance woman.
Then there was, of course, her fervent loyalty and commitment, particularly to the cause of South Africa and Nelson Mandela. In the years when newspapers and television did not like to be reminded of the man imprisoned on Robben Island, Mary never let them forget. Each year, on the anniversary of his imprisonment, she would phone them all again, shaming and cajoling them into doing something.
She never gave up phoning, writing, scripting, lobbying, and giving away whatever money she had in pursuit of her causes. The other thing that always struck me about her was that she never became doctrinaire, and she never lost sight of people, the great and the small. I am proud to have counted Mary as my friend for nearly 30 years.
Following the end of apartheid, she returned to South Africa as often as she could, picking up on her old friendships. But it was in London, only a few months ago, that she last saw Mandela, when he and Graca Machel arrived at her flat in St John's Wood. Bearing an enormous bunch of white lilies, Mandela was returning to the same place that he had visited Mary, in 1962, while on the run from South Africa.

.. copy and pasted from "Copilot Search" .. Revolutionary scriptwriter, film director and actress Embeth Davidtz should play a phantom angel presence in the streets of Gotham who is the anonymous Jill the Ripper.. But this article says that if Jill the Ripper existed she may have been a midwife or abortionist.. and this is a very scary role.. I mean.. I don't even personally have a mental comprehension of how scary this role is. An abortionist?.. Or a midwife as Jill the Ripper?.. How could Embeth Davidtz possibly confront this role for Tim Burton's Gotham films.. I need to do exhaustive research into all the scholarship of Jill the Ripper theories.. and.. and..
Like
Dislike
Jill the Ripper is a theory suggesting that Jack the Ripper may have been a woman, possibly a midwife or abortionist, who committed the Whitechapel murders in 1888.
Origins of the Theory
The idea of Jill the Ripper emerged after the murder of Mary Jane Kelly, the last of the canonical five victims. Detective Abberline reportedly considered the possibility that the killer could be female after witness Caroline Maxwell claimed to have seen Kelly alive hours after her estimated time of death, wearing a distinctive maroon shawl and other clothing. This led to speculation that a woman could have been impersonating Kelly or moving freely without arousing suspicion in Whitechapel at night

.
Rationale Behind the Theory
Proponents argue that a female killer, particularly a midwife, would have several advantages:
Anatomical knowledge: Midwives would have the medical skills to perform precise mutilations attributed to the Ripper

.
Access to victims: A midwife or clandestine abortionist could enter homes without raising suspicion, especially if victims were pregnant

Alibi and mobility: Midwives often worked irregular hours, allowing them to move about at night without attracting attention

Notable Suspects
Mary Pearcey, executed in 1890 for murdering her lover’s wife and child, is often cited as a potential Jill the Ripper due to similarities in her crimes and her violent tendencies. However, there is no evidence she was a midwife, and autopsies of the canonical Ripper victims do not confirm pregnancy, which weakens the midwife hypothesis

.
Criticisms and Limitations
Critics note that most Ripper victims were strangled before mutilation, which would not necessarily require anatomical expertise. Additionally, the theory relies heavily on circumstantial evidence, such as witness accounts and clothing descriptions, and lacks definitive proof. DNA evidence from letters and crime scene items has been inconclusive, though some analyses have suggested the possibility of a female perpetrator

Conclusion
While the Jill the Ripper theory offers an intriguing alternative to the traditional male suspect narrative, it remains speculative. It highlights the possibility that a woman, potentially a midwife or abortionist, could have committed the Whitechapel murders, but no conclusive evidence has ever confirmed this theory

A Louisiana woman was found guilty of first-degree murder in a case involving her boyfriend’s two young children last Thursday.
Terrie Gray, 49, of Leesville, was convicted after just five minutes of deliberation by the jury of murdering Athena Rose Denise Miller, 4, who prosecutors said was repeatedly abused in a “dungeon-like” bedroom, KPLC reported.
Gray was also convicted of second-degree child abuse involving the little girl’s two-year-old brother, Salem.
The two children and their father, Logan Miller, 26, had moved into Gray’s home in 2024, according to authorities.

The court heard emotional testimony from Gray’s teen daughter, Scarlett, who offered a timeline of the abuse in the months after the two children moved into her home.
Scarlett testified that she once saw her mother in the bathroom, standing behind Athena with the girl’s “arms pulled straight backwards,” American Press reported.

She said she saw bruises on the girl’s arms, legs and shoulder.
“Over time, I saw the scratches on her body, and I saw the marks under her neck getting worse,” Scarlett said.
Scarlett also testified that she found Athena unconscious in her room, and had performed CPR on the child before she was taken to a local hospital and airlifted to a trauma facility in Shreveport.
“I could barely feel (a pulse), and the breaths from her nose seemed to be coming from me doing the compressions,” she said.
Athena died a day later, on Nov. 7, 2024.
Testimony from forensic pathologist and child abuse pediatrician
Forensic pathologist Dr. Barbara Herfel testified that Athena suffered “multiple events of trauma” that included a bilateral brain bleed, multiple fractures, a broken clavicle, and burns on her face and neck, American Press reported.
Graphic autopsy photos were reportedly shown in court of the injuries on Athena’s body, along with photos of the injuries on Salem’s body.

Child abuse pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Rodriguez testified that Athena’s injuries were “non-accidental,” while the injuries on Salem were consistent with neglect or abuse, KPLC reported.
Gray’s sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 25. Under Lousiana law, she faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
The children’s father was also charged. His trial scheduled to begin on Oct. 19.

“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” is a rare instance where a filmmaker and a film are so perfectly matched they virtually become one. It’s based on a memoir of the same name by Alexandra Fuller, about growing up in Rhodesia-Zimbabwe during the country’s struggles for independence.
(The title is from a line written by a British humorist: “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight For Mother Will Be There.” Presumably if you are British, you will make the connection. I am not.)
The Fuller family are tenant farmers, living a hardscrabble life, less worried about the poisonous snakes that invade their home than the possibility that upcoming elections will lead to Black rule.

Mother Nicola Fuller (played by Embeth Davidtz, who also wrote the screenplay and directed) is convinced of her white superiority, though she spends most days in a drunken stupor, ignoring her two children.
This is likely why we watch events unfold through the eyes of one of them, 8-year-old Bobo (Lexi Venter), a wild child, roaming the countryside on her motorbike, unsupervised and unwashed.
Her warmest ties to an adult are with the African housemaid Sarah (Zikhona Bali), who serves as a surrogate mom, though the youngster mindlessly repeats the racist platitudes she learned from her parents.
It is a complicated story about a complicated time. That it is so well told is in many ways a function of the period Ms. Davidtz spent growing up in South Africa during apartheid; a time, she tells me later, that is in part responsible for her conversion to Judaism.
Ms. Davidtz, 59, who lives in Los Angeles now, was born in Lafayette, Ind. Her South African parents were in the States so her father, John, could study chemical engineering at Purdue. The family moved briefly to Trenton before returning to South Africa.
“South Africa’s story is very similar to Zimbabwe’s, but also different,” she told me. “Zimbabwe had a very bloody, brutal war of independence that went on for many, many years.
“South Africa was much tougher in suppressing the uprising of Nelson Mandela and the people trying to make change. The country was very segregated. Whites went into white-only bathrooms; Blacks went into theirs. There were different buses for whites and Blacks. It was in a way I guess similar to the Deep South in the ’40s and ’50s.”
Lexi Venter, as Bobo, and her sort-of surrogate mom, Zikhona Bali, as Sarah.
She was 8 years old when she arrived in South Africa. Two years later, the Soweto uprising began, and the country went into a state of emergency.
“People were being arrested everywhere,” she said. “I’d walk home from school, and that famous yellow police van would show up. A cop would come out and whack a Black man, stick him in the back of the van, and race off. I remember these very violent encounters.
“I was just telling someone recently about an incident when I was in a roadhouse. These two really drunk young white men — probably university students or something — came out of the restaurant. There was a very humble, very well-dressed Black man with his family sitting in his car, eating his takeout. They hauled this guy out of his car and punched him. I remember the sound of that and the sound of a body falling, all for no reason at all. It was what they could do with impunity. This was white people saying we will not let you be human beings — and that sends messages into a child’s nervous system.”
Despite problems — more on them later — Ms. Davidtz went on to have a successful career as an actor. After achieving a modicum of success in South African theater and film, she did the same in the U.S. She had important roles in such films as “Matilda,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” as well as in landmark TV series including “In Treatment,” “Californication,” and “Mad Men.”
But it was her role in “Schindler’s List” that set her career — and in a way, her personal life as well — in another direction. Steven Spielberg saw her in an obscure South African film and hired her to play Helen Hirsch, a maid to camp commander and SS officer Amon Goth.
I wondered if that role influenced her decision to convert.
“It’s interesting,” she responded.
“In my childhood in South Africa, it was the Jewish community that was in my mind always on the right side of every issue. Every Jewish friend I had, their parents were fighting for democracy in South Africa.
“We studied the war extensively in history as kids, but in my relationship with Steven and the film, it was as though a whole world opened up to me. I always felt that this was an identity I aligned with from the South African experience. That’s what started it. Then ‘Schindler’s’ went further than that. And then I met and fell in love with the Jewish man, and so that was the final thing.
“I have Jewish children. Part of me is African, the other part of me is my Jewish identity in my family.”
Embeth Davidtz also plays Bobo’s mother, Nicola Fuller.
The family observes the holidays and intermittently attends services. “But after October 7, we have all gathered more closely together because we’re all pretty much in a fight for our lives,” Ms. Davidtz said
It is that sense of community she relies on. A dozen years ago, she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I asked if her newfound Judaism provided any solace.
“I think that I had a sense of — I wouldn’t say it was religious, per se — I feel like I had a sense that I was going to be taken care of. If I don’t survive this, my children were going to be okay. They have a place in their community.”
This is 180 degrees different from her own upbringing in a household with an alcoholic father; it was her childhood that attracted her to the book. “I was this little, wild, feral, sometimes terrible child,” she said. “I was dirty, barefoot, somewhat neglected, and not taking care of myself, and so I recognized it in Alexandra Fuller’s writing.
Ironically, though in retrospect, using Bobo as the centerpiece of her film was the logical choice; it was not her first choice. “I came to the screenplay originally wanting to make a very splashy part for myself with the mother,” she said. “In the memoir, the mother had many nervous breakdowns. She goes on all kinds of avenues that are so cinematic.
“This was an incredible character to play,” Ms. Davitz continued. “‘This is what I’m going to do,’” she recalled thinking. ‘I’m going to produce this and I’m going to play this part.’
“But as time went on, and my drafts evolved, the mother became smaller and smaller, less significant. And then it dawned on me one day: The best way to tell my story would be through the lens of a child. And so I somewhat abandoned that mother role, where I was going to chew up the scenery.”
Ms. Davidtz says that 60 percent of the film is based on the book, and 40 percent is drawn from her own life. Some changes are purely cosmetic, made to simplify the story. “The character of Sarah was a compilation of various different characters,” she said.
But others, particularly those drawn from her own personal experience, added texture. At one point, Bobo visits her wealthy grandparents, characters not in Fuller’s book. “I based the grandparents on my grandparents,” Ms. Davidtz said. “My grandmother was very bigoted and snooty” and represented the view of the nation’s whites.
She is still plagued by memories of the violence she witnessed as a child, and her work in the film was not just an artistic project, but a healing process as well.
“I’m separated from Africa because I live in America, and I’ve had this feeling I’ve been divided in half,” Ms. Davitz said. “I felt by making this film I could make peace somewhat with my experience living in South Africa.”
“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” opened today.
