Hey folks, Harry here - and folks are seeking irony every which way today - The UK leaving the EU is a whopper of a moment in history - and not one that many would like to see. Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor turns his talents towards starring in and directing the Pulitizer Prize winning novel AMERICAN PASTORAL - which concerns the social upheaval of the 1960's through one middle-class family's story. If you haven't read Phillip Roth's novel, I won't spoil any of the twists, but the trailer does hint at some of the chaos involved. Pretty quickly.
The film will be released upon October 21st of this year! Looks great, but everything looks great with MAD WORLD is playing.

John Boyega joins Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit Riots flick!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Kathryn Bigelow doing a crime drama set against the '67 Detroit riots is rad as hell just by itself, but now she's gone and cast John Boyega and it's on an even cooler level.
Annapurna is funding the flick, which currently doesn't have a distributor, and they're eyeballing a summer start to production.
The film is supposed to tackle systematic racism while the legendary civil rights landmark 12th Street Riots unfolds. Boyega's an interesting pick because so far he's been tied to sci-fi flicks (and even signed up to fight monsters in Pacific Rim 2), but his talents go beyond genre. He's a magnetic screen presence with a boatload of charm to spare. Seeing him in a drama post-Star Wars is mighty appealing to me, especially if it's directed by someone as talented as Bigelow.

Todd Solondz makes a triumphant return with WIENER-DOG, a strange, yet charming character study that is entirely his, complete with dark humor, beyond uncomfortable moments, a healthy amount of cynicism and somehow, a bit of heart.
The film is comprised around a series of vignettes all centering around the travels of a dachshund and the lives of the various people she finds herself surrounded by. Peppered with themes of loss, transition, choice and mortality, the vignettes mirror the path and trajectory of life, with each of the characters hosting and personifying a different period. We see a child cancer survivor (Charlie Tahan) who has had to come closer to death than anyone would want for someone of his age, a woman (Greta Gerwig) reconnecting with childhood friends, a man (Danny DeVito) near the end of his career, struggling to understand his relevance and what he ever offered his profession, and a woman (Ellen Burstyn) at the end of her life, alone and pestered by her clueless and money-obsessed granddaughter (Zosia Mamet).
The incredible cast of actors really brings this film to life. Really, any time you throw Julie Delpy, Ellen Burstyn and Greta Gerwig into the same script, you’re bound to get something amazing. This group masterfully takes on Solondz's often uncomfortable, intentionally stilted dialogue and inhabits it in a space that is both brutally honest and touching. It’s perfectly deadpan, yet often hilarious and always a bit gut-punching. Solondz has never trafficked in the uplifting, and WIENER-DOG gives us a glimpse into the lives of its characters that, though bitingly funny, offers a darker look at what life has to offer.
Julie Delpy is amazing (and perfectly horrible) in the role of a mother who must teach her son a number of undesired life lessons as the result of the dog coming into their lives. She delivers a string of horrific dialogue that, though true, somehow winds up being the worst possible thing you could stay to a child about their newfound pet. And she does so in in a straightforward approach that makes the content of her statements even more horrifying. Danny DeVito is one of the greatest, most pathetic sad sacks you have ever seen, and Ellen Burstyn owns her role with a series of simple grunts and grumbles.
One of the high points is checking in with a grown-up Dawn Wiener, of Solondz’s WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE. Greta Gerwig takes on the role of Dawn wonderfully. Still awkward and unsure, Dawn is making her way through life pretty much as you’d expect. After she saves the dachshund from certain annihilation at the veterinarian’s office where she works, she bumps into Brandon McCarthy (Kieran Culkin) in a convenience store as he is passing through town. The two stumble through an awkward reconnection and then jump into Brandon’s shitty van for a road trip together, their story offering a thoughtful and sad view of early adulthood. Though it would have been interesting to have seen Heather Matarazzo step into the role again, recasting the character offers some separation between WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE and this piece, which is not strictly a sequel, and more like an exercise that simply revisits the character rather than relaunching her.
Solondz has never been one to shy away from the uncomfortable, and he brings that same energy and unwavering, cynical gaze with him here. Who would have ever thought that a long, almost wistful tracking shot of dog diarhhea could tell us so much about life, but that's exactly what we get. Expect the unexpected and prepare to feel unbearably awkward. WIENER-DOG really is a thoughtful, heartfelt look at some of the darker moments we find ourselves experiencing as we move through the world.

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fallout isn’t over just yet, and Warner Bros. has made its biggest move thus far in course-correcting after the disappointing critical and commercial reception to the superhero smackdown. Per THR, the studio has set DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and WB executive vice-president Jon Berg to co-run DC Films, serving as the first executives specifically in charge of running the studio’s slate of DC Comics Adaptations.
Johns has been involved with all of the films since Man of Steel in one capacity or another, serving as a member of the DC Braintrust, but this move puts him at the head of the fray in an official capacity as a creative executive who can hopefully help spearhead the development and production of the films going forward. Berg, meanwhile, is also well-entrenched in the DC Extended Universe, having already worked on Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. Moreover, both men have a connection to Batman himself, Ben Affleck. Johns has been co-writing a standalone Batman movie with Affleck, and Berg worked with the filmmaker as a WB executive on Argo and Affleck’s upcoming Live by Night.

This DC shakeup is part of a larger transition at Warner Bros., which is shifting its executives into being in charge of more specific “genre streams”—Johns and Berg will run DC Films, Courtenay Valenti will oversee the LEGO Movie franchise and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies, and Jesse Ehrman and Niija Kuykendall will spearhead comedy/family and action/sci-fi films for Warner Bros., respectively.
So what does this mean for the DC slate of films, exactly? Essentially, Warner Bros. just finally learned the right lesson from rival Marvel Studios. One of the reasons Marvel has succeeded is because it has an incredibly passionate creative in charge of the MCU in Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. He approaches the development and production of the various MCU movies as an expert on the source material and a consummate storyteller, and with a single voice he’s able to funnel the various ideas into the pipeline to either get them going or put them back into development.
Warner Bros. lacked a singular voice for its DC movies, with BvS filmmaker Zack Snyder somewhat falling into the head position by default as the director of BvS and Justice League, and as a result the approach to its various films has been muddled and a bit haphazard. By officially putting Johns and Berg in charge of DC Films, there’s now at least a semblance of order in terms of setting up and executing the slate going forward, so hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has grossed nearly $870 million worldwide since its late March release, that’s a far cry from the $1 billion WB was hoping to hit given that the film pits the two most iconic comic book characters of all time against one another for the first time in screen history. To add insult to injury, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is about to hit $1 billion in just two weeks of release.
This executive shakeup isn’t the only measure WB has taken to enact some changes in the wake of BvS. Affleck was recently upped to executive producer on Justice League, making him an official creative voice in the superhero follow-up that began production just weeks after BvS opened. Additionally, the studio and The Flash director Seth Grahame-Smith parted ways, with THR noting that WB is now looking for a more seasoned filmmaker (The Flash would’ve been Grahame-Smith’s feature debut) who can not only handle a big budget, but can also put an authorial stamp on the movie—this is still the filmmaker-driven Warner Bros. after all.
And just this week we learned that WB is developing a Harley Quinn spinoff for Margot Robbie’s Suicide Squad character, signaling that the studio’s initial slate of DC films up through 2020 might not be complete or final.

Speaking of which, THR notes that this August’s promising Suicide Squad has been another point of post-BvS fallout, as Johns’ involvement in that film’s post-production directly led to the escalation of his role in the DC movies. The report adds that Suicide Squad underwent “major additional photography” to clear up some third act issues, and indeed director David Ayer previously hinted that the widely-reported reshoots involved a new action sequence.
Setting Johns and Berg as the heads of DC Films is certainly a solid step in the right direction, but THR cautions that further executive changes are anticipated, so this may not be the end of the Batman v Superman fallout just yet. The good news is the studio is acknowledging that they may need to change a few things, and the slate is pretty solid. Here’s hoping the DC Extended Universe can course-correct, because these movies—particularly Patty Jenkins‘ Wonder Woman and James Wan‘s Aquaman—have the potential to be terrific.

Again, according to the leaks, Rey is The One, the long-promised reincarnation of The Very First Jedi. (I gather it will be confirmed that Anakin Skywalker was never The One. Which I guess would explain why Rey can so effortlessly best Vader’s broody grandson.) It turns out Rey was identified as The One while she was just a tot -- but her journey to receive Jedi training (presumably from Luke) was somehow interrupted, and Rey was lost. Apparently Luke and Yoda will explain to Rey that the founders of the Jedi and the Sith were young siblings who lived thousands of years prior to Qui-Gon’s birth. The duo got their superpowers from a Magical Tree on their family’s recently adopted planet. (Rey has visions that support Yoda’s claims.) When the brother and sister approached the tree, they discovered their superpowers. Over the years they returned to the tree, always keeping their tree-enhanced activities secret from the parents who brought them to this magic-tree-sporting planet. One day the siblings argue (perhaps about sharing their knowledge of The Tree with their parents and the galaxy?), the siblings fight and the boy kills his sister. But wait! The boy discovers he can still feel his sister’s presence. He touches The Tree and finds himself “transformed.” Wracked with guilt and irrationally angry at his parents for settling on this stupid planet in the first place, the boy added partricide and matricide to sororicide and fled the planet. But wait again! Apparently the boy didn’t completely kill his sister, because she too finds herself transformed. Transformed enough to found The First Jedi Order. After training others in the use of The Force, the girl (or let’s call her The Founder) announced she would one day be reincarnated – and that her new self should be found and trained in the Jedi ways. Anyway, it sounds like Luke is not Rey’s dad after all. Perhaps she can get visions from touching any number of Important Objects, and not just from Luke’s old lightsaber.

I can't remember, but I think he kills a young mugger.. or a purse-snatcher.. feeling that this action by the young man is an action of disrespect for the elderly.. this same "bogeyman" character, this man now a gigantic goblin-creature.. he later when he fights the power pack child-team.. i'm quoting, he says things like .. ".. love .. you think love from your parents is a gift.. is meant to be a gift.. love has to be earned.. love from your parents has to be earned..".. the "Bogeyman" gigantic goblin-man talks as many misguided but otherwise loving fathers have talked.. this was the man who they said had now been transformed into an actual bogeyman.. I was nude when I read the comic where he was an overweight man who was.. who was naked when he was being molested by a huge evil demon in the inferno in hell.. I am in that Hell now.. I am nude..
