All rights reserved Nasa is finally just weeks away from launching the first flight of its new and massive Moon rocket. It’s the first uncrewed test flight of Nasa’s Artemis Moon program that aims to put humans back on the Moon within the decade — and the space agency’s leadership is extremely excited about it. “Get ready for Artemis I – we are going!” Nasa administrator Bill Nelson tweeted Tuesday after the space agency’s Moon rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), reached the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. The SLS, and the Orion spacecraft it carries will soon “soon embark on a test flight going farther than a spacecraft built for humans has ever gone before,” he added. Nasa plans to launch the Artemis I mission, as the test flight is called, as early as 8.33am EDT on 29 August, with backup launch windows on 2 and 5 September. “It does feel surreal, because for so long we have been anticipating this moment, and now it’s finally here,” Laura Forcyzk, the founder of the space analysis firm Astralytica and author of the book, Becoming Off-Worldly: Learning from Astronauts to Prepare for Your Spaceflight Journey, told The Independent. But if Nasa officials and space fanatics are excited for SLS to blast off into the skies, it’s not clear that the American public at large shares their enthusiasm. “Most of the United States has not been paying attention to NASA’s plan to return humans to the moon,” Ms Forcyzk said. But she expects that will change, and soon. The SLS will be the largest rocket ever to fly, a super heavy launch vehicle “that we have not seen the likes of since Saturn V,” Ms Forczyk says. Standing 322 feet tall, with a central core stage flanked by two solid rocket boosters in a configuration similar to the now retired Space Shuttle, the SLS is somewhat shorter than the Saturn V, but more powerful, generating 8.8 million pounds of thrust to the Saturn V’s 7.6 million. “It’s going to be something that blows peoples’ minds if they see it in person. It’ll be spectacular,” Ms Forczyk said. “I think it’ll be bigger than just a blip on CNN. Artemis I will see SLS launch the 21st century equivalent of the Apollo spacecraft, the Orion vehicle, to, around, beyond, and back from the Moon over the course of a 42-day long mission. Orion carries lunar science experiments and cameras to document its journey to the Moon in higher definition than the Apollo missions ever did. “Rockets are just transportation. And what is it transporting? It’s transporting science. It’s transporting technology,” Ms Forcyzk said. “It’s going to be testing for radiation and taking observations of the Moon.” Radiation levels are just some of the measurements that Orion will take through three mannequins on board for Artemis I, each designed to study how the flight may affect human astronauts. That’s because human astronauts are the next step. Following a successful Artemis I mission, Nasa plans to follow up with Artemis II in May 2024, which will see as many as four astronauts fly a similar course to Artemis I around the Moon. In 2025, Artemis III will see Nasa land the first humans on the Moon since the 1970s, including the first woman and person of color. Several generations of people, millennial, Generation Z and the upcoming generation alpha, have never seen a human being set foot on another world, Ms Forczyk notes, herself included, and she believes a contemporary Moon mission is going to capture the world’s focus in a way that huge segments of the population cannot imagine. The US, and the world, had now seen several generations grow up who have never seen a human step foot on another world, Ms Forczyk said, and Artemis I is the first step on a journey that will put human spaceflight front and center in the world’s imagination once again. “If you remember back to May of 2020, people were so excited about SpaceX launching people to the International Space Station, the first time Americans had gone back to orbit [on their own] since the retirement of the space shuttle,” she said. US astronauts flew to the ISS aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft for nine years after the shuttle retired in 2011, but “returning to the moon is an even more significant gap in time. It’s an even more monumental achievement because it’s so long, since 1972.” Nasa will go on to fly additional Artemis missions through the end of the 2020s, eventually constructing a space station in lunar orbit, and outposts on the Moon’s South Pole. It’s a program designed to test out technologies and operational strategies Nasa wants to develop for future planetary missions, such as a crewed mission to Mars sometime in the 2040s. “We want to open up the rest of the solar system so that we can continue to explore our natural environment around us,” Ms Forczyk said. But the grand visions of the later Artemis missions and eventual human mission to Mars all depend on a successful Artemis I test flight. It’s possible something could go wrong, but Ms Forczyk doesn’t think it’s likely: Much like the James Webb Space Telescope, which like the SLS and Orion was delayed and more expensive than originally anticipated, Nasa has taken its time to make sure the agency got SLS right. Its future plans depend on it. “All eyes are on the program,” she said. “NASA is a government agency that is well known and popular, but also heavily criticized when it comes to how much it spends. And so when all eyes are on this, you have to justify those expenses. In regards to that Lucas said: “Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy.” Some concept and storyboard art has now been shared by Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak giving us a look at the designs for Darth Talon. Darth Talon made her first appearance in 2006’s Star Wars: Legacy comic series, and she was going to form a partnership with a resurrected Darth Maul in Lucas’s original plans for Star Wars Episodes 7-9. This version of the trilogy would have also seen Leia become Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic. As the author, Stingo, gets to know them better, he is also taken deeper and deeper into Sophie's past, where a hidden pain resides. Sophie's Choice brilliantly captures two polar opposite worlds. The present in Brooklyn is a good haven to have and catch our breath between glimpses into Sophie's horrible past. At the end of the day, in spite of the emotionally shattering story, Sophie's Choice is a story about hope and redemption. The performances certainly helped. Peter MacNicol and Kevin Kline are both wonderful as polar opposite personalities, united by a common love for literature. But Meryl Streep is utterly mesmerizing as Sophie. It's not for no reason that this was one of those Oscar-nominated performances of hers that gave that extra edge and got her the statue. All of Sophie's mannerisms, her accent, her speaking German and Polish, her searching for words in English to express what she wants to say, her restrained kindness, her pain; none of it overdone. The director even trusted Streep enough to take long shots with her as she gets into deep characterization. This is quite simply one of the finest female performances in cinema. I did fear, throughout the film, what exactly Sophie's choice was, and I was right, for it is a scene that crushes your heart. But the film comes together in the end and ends in an emotionally satisfying way in spite of everything. Thanks to this stark mixture of crushing disappointment and breath-taking elation, many have wondered whether a Star Wars sequel trilogy from creator George Lucas would have been more satisfying. Well, you can now (at least partly) judge this for yourself, as several intriguing details have now emerged regarding a scrapped set of sequels from Lucas himself. "The movies are about how Leia - I mean, who else is going to be the leader? - is trying to rebuild the Republic... Luke is trying to restart the Jedi." Though the Disney sequels began on reasonably solid footing with 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, things quickly fell apart following director Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017. While some fans took to Johnson's vision for a galaxy far, far away, which included subverting expectations and moving away from some of the lore as it's understood in the original trilogy, others were much less kind, with many believing it to be the worst movie in the franchise. But how exactly do we define a day? The time taken by our planet to complete one spin about its axis with respect to 'fixed stars' is 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.091 seconds. This day is known as the sidereal day. However, our clocks and calendars are not based on the sidereal day. This is because we have a bigger star nearer to us than other stars, and which significantly impacts our lives — the Sun. When we say there are 24 hours in a day, we are referring to a solar day, which is the time taken by Earth to complete one rotation so that the Sun appears in the same position in the sky. However, the time required by Earth to complete a solar day changes day to day due to the revolution of our planet around the Sun. In reality, each solar day could either be more or less than 24 hours. Clocks are based on the average of all the solar days in a year. Thus, on an average, the Earth takes 24 hours to complete one rotation about its axis. Atomic clocks give the most precise measurement of time. Designed to measure the precise length of a second, atomic clocks have an expected error of only one second in about 100 million years. Super-accurate atomic clocks were first developed in the 1950s and 1960s, and since then, measurements of Earth's rotation have been made using atomic clocks. In other words, the solar day on June 29 was 1.59 milliseconds short of 24 hours. June 29, 2022 is the shortest day ever recorded on Earth since the invention of the atomic clock. The Earth In A Hurry The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, the body responsible for maintaining global time and reference frame standards, has released a graph called "The Earth in a Hurry". The graph, shared by timeanddate.com, shows how Earth is spinning faster because of which the days have become shorter from 2019 to 2022. The Earth In A Hurry The Earth In A Hurry The shortest day in 2019 was 0.95 milliseconds less than 24 hours. In 2020, the shortest day was 1.47 milliseconds less than 24 hours. This indicates that the shortest day in 2020 was shorter than the shortest day in 2019. In 2021, the shortest day was 1.46 milliseconds less than 24 hours. The shortest day in 2022 so far was shorter than the shortest day last year. The graph represents the length of the day in milliseconds on the Y axis and the year on the X axis. Movements in Earth's atmosphere and the Moon's orbit around our planet are some of the factors causing Earth to spin faster than usual. Processes taking place inside the Earth's core, mantle, and on the crust, along with oceans, tides, and climate may be responsible for the downward trend in the length of the shortest day. According to timeanddate.com, Leonid Zotov and Christian Bizouard from the International Astronomical Union will speak about the 'Chandler Wobble' phenomenon at the 19th Annual Meeting of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society, timeanddate.com reported. The decrease in the length of a solar day may be related to the Chandler Wobble. The Chandler Wobble The Chandler Wobble is a small variation in the rotation of Earth on its axis, resulting in the irregular movement of Earth's geographical poles across the surface of the globe. The phenomenon is similar to a spinning top, the poles of which do not spin in a perfectly straight line. The Chandler Wobble amounts to a change of about nine metres in the point at which the axis of rotation intersects the surface of Earth, and has a period of 433 days or 14 months. According to an article published by HowStuffWorks, the Earth's axis of rotation visualised as an imaginary gigantic pen poking through the centre of the Earth, entering at the South Pole and exiting at the North Pole. One can imagine a scratch-pad equipped space station directly over the North Pole. As the Earth completes one rotation, the pen traces a circular point, instead of a dot. This happens because of the "wobble" in Earth's axis of rotation. American astronomer Seth Carlo Chandler discovered the Chandler Wobble phenomenon in 1891. The Chandler Wobble is one of the main components of the motion of the Earth's rotation axis relative to the Earth's surface, also called Polar Motion, according to a study published in the journal Earth, Planets and Space. A Chandler Wobble phase jump of about 180 degrees occurred in the 1920s. Pressure fluctuations at the bottom of oceans are believed to cause changes in the amplitude and phase of the Chandler Wobble over time. Ocean circulation currents, and variations in temperature and salinity result in the pressure changes at the bottom of the oceans. According to some scientists, tides and the liquid interior of the Earth could also be responsible for the Chandler Wobble phenomenon. It may also be caused by the tidal forces of the Sun. According to timeanddate.com, Zotov said the normal amplitude of the Chandler Wobble is about three to four metres at the surface of Earth, but from 2017 to 2020, it disappeared. In 2020, Earth recorded its shortest 28 days since the invention of the atomic clock in the 1960s. According to the ABC News article, Matt King of the University of Tasmania said Chandler Wobble and the increase in Earth's spin might be linked because both the events can be linked to mass moving around on the surface of Earth. He explained that some phenomena occurring in the climate system or in the oceans could have caused the Earth to spin faster. Movements below the surface of Earth can affect the rotation rate of the planet, but these changes occur very slowly. El Nino And Earthquakes According to NASA, the Earth's spin can be slowed down by stronger winds in El Niño years. The rotation of the Earth may slow ever so slightly because of stronger winds during El Niño years, NASA said on its website. This increased the length of a day by a fraction of a millisecond. The word El Niño is used to describe the warming of the sea surface temperature that occurs every few years, and is one of the two terms describing the biggest fluctuation in the Earth's climate system. When sea temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific rise five degrees above the long-term average, an El Niño is declared, according to the Met Office. Meanwhile, earthquakes can increase the Earth's spin. For instance, the 2004 earthquake resulted in a Tsunami in the Indian Ocean, as a result of which enough rock was shifted to shorten the length of the solar day by about three milliseconds. According to an article published by The Guardian, anything that moves towards the centre of Earth will speed up the rotation of the planet, and geological activity that pushes mass outwards from the centre will have the opposite effect and cause the Earth to spin slower. What Are Leap Seconds? Though a few milliseconds do not seem to make any difference, they can add up over the years and cause our clocks to go out of sync with Earth's spin. This is where leap seconds come to the rescue. A leap second can be added or subtracted to modern clocks to synchronise them with Earth's rotation. The system of leap seconds was introduced in 1972, and so far, there have been 27 leap seconds. A positive leap second adds a second to our clocks, while a negative leap second subtracts a second from our clocks. So far, only positive leap seconds have been used. The last time a leap second was added to our clocks was in 2016. What Would Happen If A Negative Leap Second Is Used? Since Earth is spinning faster than usual, a negative leap second may have to be introduced to make sure that civil time, which is based on atomic clocks, is in step with solar time, which is based on the movement of the Sun across the sky. However, if a negative leap second is introduced, it would mean that our clocks skip one second, which could create problems for IT systems. The use of positive leap seconds had created problems in the past. For instance, the use of a positive leap second in 2012 resulted in outages on the social media site Reddit. In a recent blog post, Meta wrote that the impact of a negative leap second has never been tested on a large scale, and that it could have a devastating effect in the software relying on timers or schedulers. It can be taken by adults and by children. If you have epilepsy, it means that you have had more than one unexplained fit, or seizure. A seizure is a short episode of symptoms caused by a burst of abnormal electrical activity in your brain. Different parts of the brain control different functions of your body, so the symptoms that occur during a seizure will depend on where the abnormal burst of electrical activity occurs. Symptoms that may occur during a seizure can affect your muscles, sensations, behaviour, emotions, and consciousness, or a combination of these. The seizures can be prevented in most people by suitable anti-epileptic medication. Clonazepam controls the symptoms of seizures by stabilising the electrical activity of your brain, which prevents the seizures from occurring. It also relaxes muscles that stiffen, or contract, during a seizure. This means that the numbers of seizures are reduced, and those that do occur, are less severe. Before taking clonazepam Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine can only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking clonazepam it is important that your doctor knows: If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding. If you have any breathing problems. If you have any problems with the way your liver works, or if you have any problems with the way your kidneys work. If you have a mental health problem. This includes conditions such as psychosis, depression, obsessive conditions, phobias and personality disorders. If you have ever had a drug or alcohol addiction. If you have been told you have spinal or cerebellar ataxia. These are conditions where you have difficulty controlling your movements - you may become shaky and unsteady, and have slurred speech or rapid eye movements. If you have a condition causing severe muscle weakness, called myasthenia gravis. If you have a rare inherited blood disorder called porphyria. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine. If you are taking or using any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines. How to take clonazepam Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about clonazepam, and will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking it. Take clonazepam exactly as your doctor tells you to - the dose will be individualised to suit your needs. You will be advised to take a small dose when you first start taking it and then to increase your dose over a few weeks as your body becomes used to it. Your doctor or pharmacist will explain this to you, and directions will also be printed on the label of the pack to remind you about what the doctor said to you. Clonazepam is usually taken as a once-daily dose at bedtime, although some doctors may recommend that you take it divided into three or four smaller doses a day until your body has adjusted to it. Try to take clonazepam at the same time(s) each day, as this will help you to remember to take your doses regularly. You can take clonazepam either with or without food. Swallow the tablet(s) with a drink of water. Clonazepam is available in two strengths of tablets and several strengths of liquid medicine. Your treatment could be affected by switching between different makes of the medicine. If this is the case for you, each time you collect a new supply, check the label to make sure it is the same as you have had before or ask your pharmacist to check it out for you. If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, take it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the following day, leave out the forgotten dose from the previous day and take the dose that is due that day as normal. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose. Getting the most from your treatment Try to keep your regular appointments with your doctor. This is so your doctor can check on your progress. When you first start a new treatment for epilepsy there may be a change in the number or type of seizures you experience. Your doctor will advise you about this. Clonazepam can make you feel sleepy, especially when you first start treatment. Do not drink alcohol while you are on clonazepam as it will increase the likelihood that you experience this side-effect. While you are being treated for epilepsy there is a small risk that you may develop mood changes, distressing thoughts and feelings about suicide. If this happens, you must tell your doctor about it straightaway. People with epilepsy must stop driving at first. Your doctor will advise you about if and when it may be possible for you to start driving again. This will usually be after a year free of seizures. If you are permitted to drive, please be aware that clonazepam is likely to affect your reactions and ability to drive. It is an offence to drive while your reactions are impaired. Please also be aware that the effects of clonazepam can last into the following day. Even if your driving ability is not impaired, should you drive, you are advised to carry with you some evidence that the medicine has been prescribed for you - a repeat prescription form or a patient information leaflet from the pack is generally considered suitable. Taking clonazepam over a period of time can make you become tolerant to it. If this happens, it will not be as effective for you as it once was. If you think this is happening to you, please discuss it with your doctor. Taking benzodiazepines like clonazepam can lead to the development of dependence. This means that your body becomes dependent on the medicine. If you are concerned about this, you should discuss it with your doctor. Many antiepileptic medicines can harm an unborn child. If you are a woman, make sure you have discussed with your doctor which types of contraception are suitable for you and your partner. If you want to have a family, discuss this with your doctor so that you can be given advice from a specialist before you become pregnant. If you are due to have an operation or any dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking. You need to take clonazepam regularly every day. Do not stop taking it until your doctor tells you to stop. Stopping treatment suddenly can cause problems and your doctor will want you to reduce your dose gradually when this becomes necessary. Can clonazepam cause problems? Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. Many of the symptoms are due to a loss of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine. When dopamine levels decrease, it causes atypical brain activity, leading to impaired movement and other symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The cause of Parkinson's disease is unknown, but several factors appear to play a role, including: Genes. Researchers have identified specific genetic changes that can cause Parkinson's disease. But these are uncommon except in rare cases with many family members affected by Parkinson's disease. However, certain gene variations appear to increase the risk of Parkinson's disease but with a relatively small risk of Parkinson's disease for each of these genetic markers. Environmental triggers. Exposure to certain toxins or environmental factors may increase the risk of later Parkinson's disease, but the risk is small. Researchers have also noted that many changes occur in the brains of people with Parkinson's disease, although it's not clear why these changes occur. These changes include: The presence of Lewy bodies. Clumps of specific substances within brain cells are microscopic markers of Parkinson's disease. These are called Lewy bodies, and researchers believe these Lewy bodies hold an important clue to the cause of Parkinson's disease. Alpha-synuclein found within Lewy bodies. Although many substances are found within Lewy bodies, scientists believe an important one is the natural and widespread protein called alpha-synuclein (a-synuclein). It's found in all Lewy bodies in a clumped form that cells can't break down. This is currently an important focus among Parkinson's disease researchers. Risk factors Risk factors for Parkinson's disease include: Age. Young adults rarely experience Parkinson's disease. It ordinarily begins in middle or late life, and the risk increases with age. People usually develop the disease around age 60 or older. If a young person does have Parkinson's disease, genetic counseling might be helpful in making family planning decisions. Work, social situations and medication side effects are also different from those of an older person with Parkinson's disease and require special considerations. Heredity. Having a close relative with Parkinson's disease increases the chances that you'll develop the disease. However, your risks are still small unless you have many relatives in your family with Parkinson's disease. Sex. Men are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than women. Exposure to toxins. Ongoing exposure to herbicides and pesticides may slightly increase your risk of Parkinson's disease. Complications Parkinson's disease is often accompanied by these additional problems, which may be treatable: Thinking difficulties. You may experience cognitive problems (dementia) and thinking difficulties. These usually occur in the later stages of Parkinson's disease. Such cognitive problems aren't usually helped by medications. Depression and emotional changes. You may experience depression, sometimes in the very early stages. Receiving treatment for depression can make it easier to handle the other challenges of Parkinson's disease. You may also experience other emotional changes, such as fear, anxiety or loss of motivation. Health care providers may give you medication to treat these symptoms. Swallowing problems. You may develop difficulties with swallowing as your condition progresses. Saliva may accumulate in your mouth due to slowed swallowing, leading to drooling. Chewing and eating problems. Late-stage Parkinson's disease affects the muscles in the mouth, making chewing difficult. This can lead to choking and poor nutrition. Sleep problems and sleep disorders. People with Parkinson's disease often have sleep problems, including waking up frequently throughout the night, waking up early or falling asleep during the day. People may also experience rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, which involves acting out your dreams. Medications may improve your sleep. Bladder problems. Parkinson's disease may cause bladder problems, including being unable to control urine or having difficulty in urinating. Constipation. Many people with Parkinson's disease develop constipation, mainly due to a slower digestive tract. You may also experience: Blood pressure changes. You may feel dizzy or lightheaded when you stand due to a sudden drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). Smell dysfunction. You may experience problems with your sense of smell. You may have difficulty identifying certain odors or the difference between odors. Fatigue. Many people with Parkinson's disease lose energy and experience fatigue, especially later in the day. The cause isn't always known. Pain. Some people with Parkinson's disease experience pain, either in specific areas of their bodies or throughout their bodies. Sexual dysfunction. Some people with Parkinson's disease notice a decrease in sexual desire or performance. Prevention Because the cause of Parkinson's is unknown, there are no proven ways to prevent the disease. Some research has shown that regular aerobic exercise might reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease. Some other research has shown that people who consume caffeine — which is found in coffee, tea and cola — get Parkinson's disease less often than those who don't drink it. Green tea is also related to a reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease. However, it is still not known whether caffeine protects against getting Parkinson's or is related in some other way.
