‘TÁR’: Cate Blanchett fascinates as a brilliant but toxic conductor Star seems to be an Oscar front-runner for her performance as a genius who makes beautiful music but leads an ugly life. By Richard Roeper Oct 13, 2022, 2:34pm EDT Twitter Facebook Email SHARE 001_TAR_FP_00001_R1660258685.jpg Renowned as a conductor, Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) also is being exposed as an ethically suspect educator and a possible sexual predator in “TÁR.”Focus Features Cate Blanchett is such a blazing and commanding force in “TÁR” we almost instantly believe she’s been the title character her entire life: one Lydia Tár, a globally renowned classical conductor who is a generational genius, a fiercely protective mother, a passionate lover, an influential mentor, a generous benefactor, a monstrous manipulator, an ethically questionable educator, a hot-tempered narcissist, a master at transactional relationships, a coldly efficient executive and an alleged sexual predator. She is brilliant. She is toxic. She is legendary. She is the real thing. She is a fraud. Even though Lydia is a wholly fictional character, she’s so complex and fascinating and unforgettable, I would totally read the autobiography she’s about to publish in the movie, if they released it in real life. Blanchett’s performance is so ferociously engrossing she becomes the clear front-runner for the Academy Award; at the very least, there are now just four best actress nomination slots available. After a couple of brief, social media-tinged moments of foreshadowing doled out like cryptic plot breadcrumbs, “TÁR” announces its gravitas with a captivating, 15-minute sequence that feels like an excerpt from a PBS special as the New Yorker journalist Adam Gopnik (played quite well by Adam Gopnik) interviews Lydia onstage in front of a packed auditorium in New York City. Gopnik’s long introduction notes Lydia is a member of the exclusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) club, and when his listing of other EGOT winners ends with him naming “Mel Brooks” and the crowd laughs, it’s a perfect insight into the smug elitism of just about everyone in Lydia’s world, including her fans. ‘TÁR’ Focus Features presents a film written and directed by Todd Field. Rated R (for some language and brief nudity). Running time: 157 minutes. Now showing at local theaters. That opening sequence is just one of many memorable, perfectly constructed, simple yet dazzling and elegant set pieces in the film; another takes place when Lydia is teaching at Juilliard and has an intensely passive-aggressive-passive-REALLY AGGRESSIVE exchange with a student who says they identify as “a BIPOC pangender person” and as such has no interest in studying, playing or conducting the music of The Dead White German composer Bach, who fathered some 20 children. Each of these scenes, and many more, build like, well, a symphony — a symphony of Lydia’s life and times. Working from his own original screenplay, director Todd Field (“In the Bedroom,” “Little Children”) plunges into the rarefied air of Lydia’s world at a particularly exciting and chaotic time, even for Lydia. She’s in rehearsals with the Berlin Philharmonic for a live recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5; she’s about to release that keenly anticipated autobiography, with the predictably pretentious title of “Tár on Tár”; she’s involved in a long-term but increasingly fragile marriage with the orchestra’s first violinist, Sharon (Nina Hoss), with whom she has an adopted daughter (Mila Bogojevic), who is being bullied at school, and she’s dealing with a number of acolytes, associates and mentors, many of whom worship her to an almost unhealthy degree. (Lydia’s dismissive handling of one former protégé is sure to come back to haunt her.) Oh, and Lydia often gobbles pills to help her cope with sleeplessness and other issues, which includes her susceptibility to being disturbed by all manner of repetitive sounds, whether it’s a metronome that inexplicably starts ticking in the middle of the night, a knock on her apartment door at dawn, a sound coming from the refrigerator/freezer or a woman’s screams deep in the forest. (Some of these sounds are real; others, perhaps not.) Lydia is a commanding presence even in her most human and vulnerable moments, but it becomes clear she’s only in control, only truly comfortable, only fully alive, when she’s conducting. (Like so many great stage actors, musicians, athletes and even stand-up comedians, the problem isn’t the time spent performing; it’s how to come down from that exalted high and figure out what to do with the other 21 or 22 hours of the day.) As Lydia takes an interest in a free-spirit Russian cellist named Olga (real-life musician Sophie Kauer) that extends beyond appreciation for Olga’s formidable potential, we can see the hurt in Sharon’s eyes; yes, Sharon has looked the other way on a number of occasions, but this might be the moment when the levee breaks. At the same time, Lydia’s pattern of allegedly exploiting her mentor-pupil position to prey on young women has reached the point where at least one life has been destroyed, and the media has picked up the story. Even as “TÁR” delivers as an intellectually soaring, elaborately constructed and passionate tribute to the technical AND emotional joys of playing, conducting and appreciating beautiful music, it also becomes a knowing and timely #MeToo fable. The expansive supporting ensemble includes Mark Strong as a kind of Salieri to Lydia’s Mozart; Noémie Merlant as Lydia’s long-suffering assistant, who has sublimated her own ambitions in order to serve Lydia’s every demand, and Allan Corduner as the assistant conductor who is one of many to experience Lydia’s casually cruel treatment. They’re all great and they all get their solo moments, but throughout the entirety of “TÁR,” there’s never any doubt Cate Blanchett is the one holding the baton and everyone else is facing her, awaiting their cues.

The experiences and chaos she witnessed gave her deep emotional scars and bitter memories. After she left the Special Forces, Arclight decided to take up bodybuilding where she used her anger and rage to strengthen her body. Her mutant abilities began to surface and she used her strength and will to augment them by building up her body to match her powers. Creation Arclight was created by Chris Claremont, John Romita Jr and Bret Blevins in 1988 and first appeared in shadow in Uncanny X-Men # 210. Arclight's full appearance was in Uncanny X-Men # 211. Major Story Arcs Mutant Massacre As a war veteran she is well versed in combat and she shows this in during the attacks on Morlocks alongside her other partners of the Marauders. Her relationship with teammate Scalphunter has also made her second-in-command. During their first mission, Arclight killed dozens of underground-dwelling mutants known as Morlocks. She took some time off to join the Femizons a female based team. Though the details of her recruitment by Mister Sinister to the Marauders remain unrevealed, she has participated in all of the group's major operations. Due to Mr. Sinister cloning its unclear if she is the original or a clone. M-Day Arclight became a resident of the shelter at the X-Men's Mansion as one of the 198 after the events of M-Day. She was one of the few mutants that kept their powers. Eventually, Arclight left the Mansion again and was seen again as a seemingly mindless slave that attacked the X-Men. During this, Arclight was seemingly killed. With Magneto More recently, Magneto managed to find Mr. Sinister's cloning machines and used it to produce new clones of the Marauders, including Arclight, this time to help his mutant cause. The Goblin Queen After the foundation of Krakoa as a mutant nation, Mr. Sinister abandoned many clone farms around the world, leaving the status of the Marauders as living or dead unclear. Madelyne Pryor, AKA the Goblin Queen took over one such facility and created her own twisted team of half-dead Marauder clones, including Arclight. Pryor claimed to overclock the facility, creating hundreds of each Marauder in order to form an army. Sinister's new Hellions team, including former Marauder John Greycrow arrived to destroy the facility and came into conflict with the Goblin Queen and her Maraudes. Greycrow slaughtered Arclight and the other clones so they could be reborn on Krakoa without Pryor's corruption. Arclight and the other Marauders were indeed returned to life by The Five, and they presumably remain on Krakoa. Recently, astronomers discovered a massive black hole just 1,550 light-years away, which is right in our neighborhood, astronomically speaking. It is one of the closest black holes ever discovered, with a mass 12 times that of the sun. Being so close to us, it’s an exciting target for future research. Chakrabart et al. © Provided by Digital Trends “It is closer to the sun than any other known black hole, at a distance of 1,550 light years,” said Sukanya Chakrabarti, lead author of the study from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, in a statement. “So, it’s practically in our backyard.” The black hole was discovered using data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, which is building a 3D map of the entire galaxy. The researchers looked at nearly 200,000 binary stars, in which a star orbits a companion, to search for cases where the brightness of one star was sufficient to explain the brightness of the binary. That implies that the companion in these binaries must be dark, which suggests the companion could be a black hole. This is how they identified and learned about the nearby black hole. “In this case we’re looking at a monster black hole but it’s on a long-period orbit of 185 days, or about half a year,” Chakrabarti said. “It’s pretty far from the visible star and not making any advances toward it.” As well as finding a useful target for research because of its location, the study also demonstrates how more black holes can be identified in the future. “Simple estimates suggest that there are about a million visible stars that have massive black hole companions in our galaxy,” Chakrabarti said. “But there are a hundred billion stars in our galaxy, so it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The Gaia mission, with its incredibly precise measurements, made it easier by narrowing down our search.” The research has not yet been peer reviewed but has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal. The study, set to begin on October 24, will pave the way for studying examples of UAPs, which are phenomena observed in the sky that cannot be identified as natural phenomena or aircraft. This will last nine months, focus entirely on unclassified data, analyze how data is gathered and recommend how it should be analyzed by NASA in the future. The results will be published for the public by the middle of 2023. The team is filled with experts in observation, aerospace studies, technology and more. Who is on NASA's UAP team? Leading the team is David Spergel, the Jewish-American astrophysicist who has made waves for co-leading the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe and for currently helming the science philanthropy organization the Simons Foundation. Also included on the team is Mike Gold, a former high-ranking NASA official who helped lead the creation of the Artemis Accords, the documents that have enshrined the behavioral norms for space, in conjunction with the US State Department, and helped secure the necessary agreements for NASA's long-awaited lunar Gateway. And in choosing one Robert Pattinson to play Eric Packer, the billionaire whose life and fortune appears to ebb away as he crosses New York in an armour plated limousine, Cronenberg has made yet another unusual yet brave move – Pattinson turns in a performance that’s a world away from the wan, glittery vampire he became known for in the Twilight movie, and in a role that requires him to be in almost every scene, the young actor has surely silenced his critics with a turn of considerable depth. As the strange, hallucinatory Cosmopolis arrives in UK cinemas, it was our pleasure to sit with Cronenberg and Pattinson in a round-table interview, and discuss the making of the film, the changes made from Don DeLillo’s source novel, and its relevance in today’s post-financial crisis landscape. Note that the following contains one or two mild spoilers about the movie’s plot developments. Skip Ad Do you feel that Cosmopolis has been informed in any way by the recent Occupy movements in both Europe and the US? AD AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW David Cronenberg: Well, they didn’t inform the film at all because we really just stuck to the script. It just so happens that what Don [DeLillo, the author of Cosmopolis] wrote was prescient and clairvoyant. It felt more that the world was finally catching up with him! So it didn’t alter what we did, but we couldn’t help noticing that it was like we were making these things happen. I mean, we knew that we weren’t! [laughs]. But Paul Giamatti [who plays Benno Levin in the film] texted me to say: “I can’t believe it, I just saw Rupert Murdoch get a pie in the face.” We’d just shot the scene were Rob [Pattinson] gets the pie in his face, so it was like: “This is weird!” So is Cosmopolis an anti-capitalist film? DC: It’s interesting, but there really are no anti-capitalists in this movie. It’s also been noted that the Occupy Wall Street movement isn’t really anti-capitalist. What they really want is for the 99 per cent have a piece of the action! So it’s not like they’re communists or socialists and they hate capitalism and want to take it down. So it’s a little odd and not quite what you might think. And it’s the same with the character of Benno [Giamatti]. He loves capitalism, but his complaint is that he’s been left behind by Eric Packer [Pattinson] who has helped destroy the way that Benno loved to work. But he’s not an anti-capitalist, so it’s difficult to [pigeonhole] the movie as anti-capitalist. You’ve made a number of changes to the story from the book to the screen. One of the key alterations is the shifting of the currency which helps bring down Eric’s empire from the Japanese Yen to the Chinese Yuan. Why was that? DC: [laughs] It was my feeble attempt –as a complete ignoramus in the realm of economics – to make it a little more futuristic. Since the book was written the Yen has collapsed and then you’ve also had the recent Tsunami and suddenly Japan is staggering. But before then it was like the book Rising Sun, everyone was terrified of the rise of Japan and the Yen was going to become the world currency. Of course, the look to the East was correct, but it’s really China that will be the world power and by 2015 the Yuan will be a fully convertible currency and may well displace the dollar. That’s the Chinese plan and no one seems to be able to think that it won’t happen. So that was what I did there, but I don’t think it really changes the tone of it though. AD AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW You say that, but it does reinforce some of the other imagery in the film in a stronger way. For example, the image of the rats recurs throughout. While that comes from DeLillo’s book it also has an added resonance as the rat is actually the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which signifies a conqueror. I hadn’t realised that, but I don’t think Don had either. The idea of the rat [becoming a unit of currency] is taken from the Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert’s book Report From A Besieged City. The character of Eric Packer seems more nihilistic than most of David’s previous characters. He seems to be less a seeker of knowledge that we’ve seen before and his main aim in the film – to get a haircut – seems fairly trivial. Were these differences/elements of Packer a factor in both of you taking on the project? Robert Pattinson: I don’t think I approached him as a nihilist. There’s an energy to the character, but the energy of a nihilist is very different. He’s not really throwing things away consciously, but rather thinks he’s getting closer to something and everything starts falling away. DC: I never consciously think about my previous work. You’re asking me to be an analyst of my own movies and that’s your job! [laughs] The joy for me is the middle of the night being on the street with your crew and your actors and nobody else around. At that point you’re not thinking about Twilight or Scanners. You’re thinking about Cosmopolis and Eric Packer and the structure of it and that’s a very beautiful and pure thing. As for the haircut – well, it’s not trivial at all. In fact, Eric sets it up at the beginning when he says: “A haircut is what? It’s a calendar on the wall”. It’s his past, he’s returning to his childhood where he was somehow purer and more innocent. When he sits in the [barber’s] chair he somehow becomes a child again and the old barber becomes like his father. So, no, it’s not trivial at all. AD AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW The poster for the film in the UK reads “Prepare To Be Surprised”. With a sizeable fan base that may have certain expectations about what to expect from a film starring Robert, how do you think they’ll react to the film? RP: I hope they come to see it [laughs]. DC: That’s the priority. Just get them into the theatre anyway you can! Hook ‘em, grab ‘em! [laughs] RP: I think The Twilight fanbase are much maligned because of their tenacity. We were in Germany yesterday and it was a miserable day and they were all waiting in the middle of nowhere and everyone was screaming, but then you go down the line and people are giving you books and stuff. So it’s not like they’re giving you teddy bears! Twilight’s attracted a broad spectrum of people and they’ve all been lumped together. A lot of people who’ve come to the premieres in Europe have seen the film three or four times already and they all have quite interesting critiques of it. DC: And lots of the girls in those lines actually had copies of Cosmopolis and they’ve either read them or truly intend to read them. Okay, so maybe they’ve only read Harry Potter and Twilight, but now they’re reading Don DeLillo, so what’s wrong with that? [laughs] Aside from changing the Yen to the Yuan there are a number of other subtle changes you’ve made to the book. I’m thinking mainly about the material with Eric’s new bride, Elise. This plays out differently in film as you have the couple neither touch nor consummate their marriage. Why did you make that change? AD AD – CONTENT CONTINUES BELOW DC: Well, frankly, I never felt that they ever touched. And the scene in the book [where Eric and Elise have sex] during the filmed orgy featuring 100 naked people in the streets of New York… well, I felt that was honestly Eric’s fantasy of reconciliation and a rather juvenile fantasy at that. And I knew that on screen it would be laughable. An audience would never buy that. So, I felt, no, he disconnects from his wife, he never does touch her, they never do have sex and it’s over. And that’s one of the things that leads him to destroy himself. I mean, there are several moments that lead him to that. It’s the death of Brother Fez [the Sufi rap star], it’s the break-up of his marriage, it’s the killing of Torval [his bodyguard] and all these moments all lead him to the end, which is a kind of suicide. The movement of the movie is that he’s going back to his childhood and then beyond, to before he was born, which is to say death. Is it correct that you and Robert will be working together again in the film Maps To The Stars? Is that definitely going ahead? RP: I want to do it. One of the reasons we started talking about it was to try and get some financing for it. DC: It has created some interest, actually, and weirdly enough that counts. But there’s a brilliant script by a friend of mine, Bruce Wagner. I tried to do it five years ago, but I couldn’t get it made. It’s one of those great scripts and – in a way – it’s like Cosmopolis in that it’s just not an easy sell. It’s edgy, in that sort of nasty, disturbing way. And it has emotion, but it’s kind of a weird emotion. Again, it’s like Cosmopolis, where by the end of the movie it’s become strangely sad and emotional. It sort of sneaks up on you because you don’t think it’s ever going there, which is how the book struck me too. But it’s hard to make difficult movies, even when you have very credible actors who bring a lot of attention to a project. I mean, Viggo Mortensen wants to play another role in the movie, so you’d think with both Viggo and Robert interested you could raise 15 million euros no problem. But it is a problem, unless you all want to kick in! [laughs] I’ll give you all producer credits!
