“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” is a rare instance where a filmmaker and a film are so perfectly matched they virtually become one. It’s based on a memoir of the same name by Alexandra Fuller, about growing up in Rhodesia-Zimbabwe during the country’s struggles for independence.
(The title is from a line written by a British humorist: “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight For Mother Will Be There.” Presumably if you are British, you will make the connection. I am not.)
The Fuller family are tenant farmers, living a hardscrabble life, less worried about the poisonous snakes that invade their home than the possibility that upcoming elections will lead to Black rule.

Mother Nicola Fuller (played by Embeth Davidtz, who also wrote the screenplay and directed) is convinced of her white superiority, though she spends most days in a drunken stupor, ignoring her two children.
This is likely why we watch events unfold through the eyes of one of them, 8-year-old Bobo (Lexi Venter), a wild child, roaming the countryside on her motorbike, unsupervised and unwashed.
Her warmest ties to an adult are with the African housemaid Sarah (Zikhona Bali), who serves as a surrogate mom, though the youngster mindlessly repeats the racist platitudes she learned from her parents.
It is a complicated story about a complicated time. That it is so well told is in many ways a function of the period Ms. Davidtz spent growing up in South Africa during apartheid; a time, she tells me later, that is in part responsible for her conversion to Judaism.
Ms. Davidtz, 59, who lives in Los Angeles now, was born in Lafayette, Ind. Her South African parents were in the States so her father, John, could study chemical engineering at Purdue. The family moved briefly to Trenton before returning to South Africa.
“South Africa’s story is very similar to Zimbabwe’s, but also different,” she told me. “Zimbabwe had a very bloody, brutal war of independence that went on for many, many years.
“South Africa was much tougher in suppressing the uprising of Nelson Mandela and the people trying to make change. The country was very segregated. Whites went into white-only bathrooms; Blacks went into theirs. There were different buses for whites and Blacks. It was in a way I guess similar to the Deep South in the ’40s and ’50s.”
Lexi Venter, as Bobo, and her sort-of surrogate mom, Zikhona Bali, as Sarah.
She was 8 years old when she arrived in South Africa. Two years later, the Soweto uprising began, and the country went into a state of emergency.
“People were being arrested everywhere,” she said. “I’d walk home from school, and that famous yellow police van would show up. A cop would come out and whack a Black man, stick him in the back of the van, and race off. I remember these very violent encounters.
“I was just telling someone recently about an incident when I was in a roadhouse. These two really drunk young white men — probably university students or something — came out of the restaurant. There was a very humble, very well-dressed Black man with his family sitting in his car, eating his takeout. They hauled this guy out of his car and punched him. I remember the sound of that and the sound of a body falling, all for no reason at all. It was what they could do with impunity. This was white people saying we will not let you be human beings — and that sends messages into a child’s nervous system.”
Despite problems — more on them later — Ms. Davidtz went on to have a successful career as an actor. After achieving a modicum of success in South African theater and film, she did the same in the U.S. She had important roles in such films as “Matilda,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” as well as in landmark TV series including “In Treatment,” “Californication,” and “Mad Men.”
But it was her role in “Schindler’s List” that set her career — and in a way, her personal life as well — in another direction. Steven Spielberg saw her in an obscure South African film and hired her to play Helen Hirsch, a maid to camp commander and SS officer Amon Goth.
I wondered if that role influenced her decision to convert.
“It’s interesting,” she responded.
“In my childhood in South Africa, it was the Jewish community that was in my mind always on the right side of every issue. Every Jewish friend I had, their parents were fighting for democracy in South Africa.
“We studied the war extensively in history as kids, but in my relationship with Steven and the film, it was as though a whole world opened up to me. I always felt that this was an identity I aligned with from the South African experience. That’s what started it. Then ‘Schindler’s’ went further than that. And then I met and fell in love with the Jewish man, and so that was the final thing.
“I have Jewish children. Part of me is African, the other part of me is my Jewish identity in my family.”
Embeth Davidtz also plays Bobo’s mother, Nicola Fuller.
The family observes the holidays and intermittently attends services. “But after October 7, we have all gathered more closely together because we’re all pretty much in a fight for our lives,” Ms. Davidtz said
It is that sense of community she relies on. A dozen years ago, she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I asked if her newfound Judaism provided any solace.
“I think that I had a sense of — I wouldn’t say it was religious, per se — I feel like I had a sense that I was going to be taken care of. If I don’t survive this, my children were going to be okay. They have a place in their community.”
This is 180 degrees different from her own upbringing in a household with an alcoholic father; it was her childhood that attracted her to the book. “I was this little, wild, feral, sometimes terrible child,” she said. “I was dirty, barefoot, somewhat neglected, and not taking care of myself, and so I recognized it in Alexandra Fuller’s writing.
Ironically, though in retrospect, using Bobo as the centerpiece of her film was the logical choice; it was not her first choice. “I came to the screenplay originally wanting to make a very splashy part for myself with the mother,” she said. “In the memoir, the mother had many nervous breakdowns. She goes on all kinds of avenues that are so cinematic.
“This was an incredible character to play,” Ms. Davitz continued. “‘This is what I’m going to do,’” she recalled thinking. ‘I’m going to produce this and I’m going to play this part.’
“But as time went on, and my drafts evolved, the mother became smaller and smaller, less significant. And then it dawned on me one day: The best way to tell my story would be through the lens of a child. And so I somewhat abandoned that mother role, where I was going to chew up the scenery.”
Ms. Davidtz says that 60 percent of the film is based on the book, and 40 percent is drawn from her own life. Some changes are purely cosmetic, made to simplify the story. “The character of Sarah was a compilation of various different characters,” she said.
But others, particularly those drawn from her own personal experience, added texture. At one point, Bobo visits her wealthy grandparents, characters not in Fuller’s book. “I based the grandparents on my grandparents,” Ms. Davidtz said. “My grandmother was very bigoted and snooty” and represented the view of the nation’s whites.
She is still plagued by memories of the violence she witnessed as a child, and her work in the film was not just an artistic project, but a healing process as well.
“I’m separated from Africa because I live in America, and I’ve had this feeling I’ve been divided in half,” Ms. Davitz said. “I felt by making this film I could make peace somewhat with my experience living in South Africa.”
“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” opened today.

Toxicants
Olanzapine is a second generation atypical antipsychotic. Widely used in Australasia and therefore a fairly common presentation to the emergency department. Olanzapine like queitiapine has a predictable dose-dependent CNS depression.
Toxic Mechanism:
Olanzapine antagonises the mesolimbic dopamine (D2), serotonin, histamine the muscarninic M1 and peripheral alpha 1 receptors. This causes an anticholinergic effect (muscarinic receptors) in overdose and drowsiness (histamine receptor blockade).
Toxicokinetics:
Rapidly absorbed, oral or sublingual
Large volume of distribution 10-20 L/kg
Large first pass effect
Hepatic metabolism to inactive water-soluble metabolites
Resuscitation:
Reduced GCS: Prompt intubation and ventilation
Hypotension: Give 10 – 20 ml/kg of IV crystalloid, if response is not adequate start noradrenaline (adrenaline is contraindicated due to paradoxical hypotension from beta 2 mediated vasodilatation). Noradrenaline dose: 0.15mg/kg in 50ml D5W at 1-10ml/hr (0.05 – 0.5 mcg/kg/min)
Seizures (rare)/agitation: IV benzodiazepines incrementally dosed every 5 minutes to effect.
Check the patient is not in a dysrhythmia
Can be managed with benzodiazepines (varying doses in the textbooks, easy method is 0.1mg/kg IV for lorazepam (max 4mg) / midazolam (max 10mg) / diazepam (max 10mg). Or…
Lorazepam 0.1mg/kg max 4mg
Diazepam 0.15mg/kg max 10mg
Midazolam 0.2mg/kg max 10mg
Risk Assessment
Dose-related risk assessment:
Children: the toxic dose is unclear but symptoms are likely to develop when >0.5 mg/kg have been ingested. Delayed extrapyramidal effects can occur in children days later.
Clinical features should manifest within 2 – 4 hours and may last 48 hours (coma usually lasts 24 – 48 hours)
Sedation, ataxia, miosis (unlike the mydriasis commonly seen with anticholinergics), fluctuating mental status.
Reduced GCS, miosis and tachycardia is almost pathognomonic of olanzapine overdose in the western world.
Tachycardia and orthostatic Hypotension
Mild to moderate anticholinergic syndrome
Supportive Care
Controlling the delirium can be difficult, things to consider include
Titrated doses of benzodiazepines e.g. diazepam 2.5 – 5 mg every 5 minutes IV until gentle sedation is achieved (doses used may necessitate intubation).
Controversially physostigmine has been used which has been reportedly reversed agitation and olanzapine comas but has its own side effect profile.
Physical restraint
Bladder scan and a catheter for urinary retention (no amount of benzodiazepines will fix this agitation)
Investigations
Screening: 12 lead ECG, BSL, Paracetamol level
Specific:
ECG monitoring, do an ECG at presentation and 6 hours, if this is normal then cardiac monitoring may stop. If intubated then the patient will need ECG every 4 hours until clinical symptoms or cardiac abnormalities resolve. Non specific ST – T wave changes occur in 15%, minor QT prolongation but no Torsades de pointes reported
QT Nomogram
QT nomogram risk stratification for torsades de pointes
Decontamination:
Rarely used as the onset of coma and resolution is rapid and good supportive care ensures a good outcome.
Enhanced Elimination
Not clinical useful
Antidote
None available
Disposition
Children who have ingested >0.5 mg/kg should be observed in hospital for 4 hours, if asymptomatic they can be discharged but warned they may develop extrapyramidal movements up to 3 days later.
Patients should be observed for 4 hours, if asymptomatic with a normal baseline ECG, no hypotension and eating and drinking they can be medically cleared
Patients with any clinical features should be observed or treated as required until symptoms have resolved. Depending on severity patients may stay in an overnight observation ward or may need ICU.

A 12-year-old boy built a nuclear fusion device in his spare room. Then it detected real neutrons

At eight years old, Aiden McMillan started reading about nuclear physics. He wasn’t doing it for school. He was just interested.
For the next two years, he didn’t touch a single piece of equipment. He read, studied concepts, and ran calculations. Only then did he start building.

By the time he was 12, that quiet start had become something few adults ever attempt. Working out of a spare room at home and a nonprofit workshop in West Dallas, the seventh-grader built a machine that produced nuclear fusion, putting him in line for a Guinness World Record.

McMillan told NBC DFW that he pursued the project simply because he found it interesting. “It doesn’t make me jump higher. It doesn’t make me write faster. It doesn’t do anything for me,” he said. “But in the grand scheme of things, fusion as a whole, in my opinion, is the energy of the future.”
Two Years of Reading, Then Two Years of Building
McMillan, a student in the Dallas Independent School District, spent the first two years of the project studying nuclear physics before he assembled anything. He needed to understand the underlying science before he could translate it into hardware.
Sponsored
The next two years were spent building and testing. He worked through seven different prototypes before reaching a result. Components failed, designs were scrapped, and the process required skills well outside a standard middle school curriculum, including how to handle vacuum pumps and manage high-voltage equipment safely.

“I mean, I loved the project, but I also kinda hated it,” McMillan told NBC DFW.
Much of the physical build took place at Launchpad, a nonprofit makerspace housed in a brick building in West Dallas. The space supports ambitious student engineering projects, and McMillan’s work was part of what helped inspire its creation.
How the Device Actually Works
Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the sun. It works by forcing two light atomic nuclei together with enough energy that they merge into a single larger nucleus, releasing energy as they combine.
McMillan’s machine is a type of device called a fusor. It uses high voltage to accelerate atoms of deuterium, a form of hydrogen, inside a sealed chamber until some of them collide fast enough to fuse. The device does not generate usable electricity. Its purpose is to demonstrate that fusion is occurring.
Sponsored
The proof comes from neutrons. When deuterium atoms fuse, they release neutrons as a byproduct, and those neutrons can be measured with a detector. Professional laboratories use the same method to verify fusion. According to Newsweek, McMillan’s neutron measurements have since been independently verified.
When the detector confirmed a result, McMillan’s reaction was immediate. “We got neutrons, yeah!” he recalled to NBC DFW. “Kind of tearing up about it cause it was like, hard to describe. It was like the end of a long, long journey.”
Safety and a Mother Who Needed Convincing
Building a fusion device at home raised real concerns, and McMillan’s mother was not prepared to wave them aside. She required a detailed accounting of every risk before allowing the project to move forward.
“There were some alarm bells with my mom, yes,” McMillan told NBC DFW. “She was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, take a step back, tell me exactly what could go wrong, and how it could go wrong and make sure it doesn’t go wrong.'”
The breakthrough moment came when the device generated neutrons

Winning that trust was a condition of the project continuing at all. Without it, the work would have stopped at notebooks and sketches. The family worked through the safety questions rather than around them, and the build proceeded from there.
The Record He Is Chasing
The current Guinness World Record for youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion belongs to Jackson Oswalt of Memphis, Tennessee, who did it in 2018 just hours before turning 13. Oswalt had started his project at age 11, converting his family’s playroom into a lab and sourcing parts on eBay. He taught himself using the online community Fusor.net, and his results were later verified by the Open Source Fusor Research Consortium. Guinness officially recognized his record in October 2020.
Oswalt himself had broken a previous record set by Taylor Wilson, who achieved fusion at age 14 in 2008.
When Oswalt’s story went public, FBI agents visited his Memphis home and swept it with a Geiger counter to check for radiation. The instrument detected nothing dangerous.
McMillan achieved fusion at 12, which would make him several months younger than Oswalt was at the time of his result. He has submitted a formal application to Guinness World Records and is awaiting their verification decision.
What the Achievement Represents
McMillan’s fusor, like Oswalt’s before it, does not solve the broader challenge of making fusion a practical energy source. The device produces real fusion reactions but generates no net electricity. The gap between demonstrating fusion and making it commercially viable remains the central problem facing the field.
That context does not diminish what McMillan built. He worked through seven prototypes over four years, taught himself vacuum systems and high-voltage handling, and produced neutron measurements that have been independently confirmed. His Guinness application is now under review.

The WandaVision spinoff VisionQuest is going to be out this fall. The Marvel Television Studios production for Disney+ will complete the trilogy started with WandaVision in 2020 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. The first two series focused on the characters of Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness. Now the third and final show, releasing on October 14, 2026, will focus on Vision, played by Paul Bettany. Star Bettany confirms that the show will explore the dynamic between Vision and Ultron (James Spader). Terry Matalas is the showrunner on VisionQuest.

Paul Bettany on Vision's and Ultron's relationship in VisionQuest
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Bettany shared that VisionQuest was currently in the post-production stage. He said that showrunner Matalas had done a grand job and shared VisionQuest was funny, "moving," and super exciting.
James Spader voiced Ultron

The actor went on to praise his co-star James Spader, who had earlier voiced the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Bettany said Spader was delicious and funny in VisionQuest and that they loved working with one another. However, the British star did not expand on the fact that viewers might see a human version of Ultron in the show. Instead, he said, "The story is largely revolved around that relationship, and it’s real fun."
Bettany also added that VisionQuest is much like WandaVision and will end the trilogy while also being its own thing. He was very proud to be part of the show.
More about VisionQuest
After being killed by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2018), Vision (Bettany) was resurrected in WandaVision. After the end of the show, White Vision emerges, having been rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D. In VisionQuest, Vision tries to regain his memory and humanity. Besides Ultron, other characters of note included Todd Stashwick as Paladin, a mercenary turned assassin who targets Vision’s technology, and Faran Tahir, who reprises his role as Raza, the Ten Rings leader.

Artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity, experts - including the heads of OpenAI and Google Deepmind - have warned.
Dozens have supported a statement published on the webpage of the Centre for AI Safety.
"Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war" it reads.
But others say the fears are overblown.
Sam Altman, chief executive of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind and Dario Amodei of Anthropic have all supported the statement.
The Centre for AI Safety website suggests a number of possible disaster scenarios:
AIs could be weaponised - for example, drug-discovery tools could be used to build chemical weapons
AI-generated misinformation could destabilise society and "undermine collective decision-making"
The power of AI could become increasingly concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, enabling "regimes to enforce narrow values through pervasive surveillance and oppressive censorship"
Enfeeblement, where humans become dependent on AI "similar to the scenario portrayed in the film Wall-E"
Dr Geoffrey Hinton, who issued an earlier warning about risks from super-intelligent AI, has also supported the Centre for AI Safety's call.
Yoshua Bengio, professor of computer science at the university of Montreal, also signed.
Dr Hinton, Prof Bengio and NYU Professor Yann LeCun are often described as the "godfathers of AI" for their groundbreaking work in the field - for which they jointly won the 2018 Turing Award, which recognises outstanding contributions in computer science.
But Prof LeCun, who also works at Meta, has said these apocalyptic warnings are overblown tweeting that "the most common reaction by AI researchers to these prophecies of doom is face palming".

'Fracturing reality'
Many other experts similarly believe that fears of AI wiping out humanity are unrealistic, and a distraction from issues such as bias in systems that are already a problem.
Arvind Narayanan, a computer scientist at Princeton University, has previously told the BBC that sci-fi-like disaster scenarios are unrealistic: "Current AI is nowhere near capable enough for these risks to materialise. As a result, it's distracted attention away from the near-term harms of AI".
Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI senior research associate Elizabeth Renieris told BBC News she worried more about risks closer to the present.
"Advancements in AI will magnify the scale of automated decision-making that is biased, discriminatory, exclusionary or otherwise unfair while also being inscrutable and incontestable," she said. They would "drive an exponential increase in the volume and spread of misinformation, thereby fracturing reality and eroding the public trust, and drive further inequality, particularly for those who remain on the wrong side of the digital divide".
Many AI tools essentially "free ride" on the "whole of human experience to date", Ms Renieris said. Many are trained on human-created content, text, art and music they can then imitate - and their creators "have effectively transferred tremendous wealth and power from the public sphere to a small handful of private entities".
But Centre for AI Safety director Dan Hendrycks told BBC News future risks and present concerns "shouldn't be viewed antagonistically".
"Addressing some of the issues today can be useful for addressing many of the later risks tomorrow," he said.
Superintelligence efforts
Media coverage of the supposed "existential" threat from AI has snowballed since March 2023 when experts, including Tesla boss Elon Musk, signed an open letter urging a halt to the development of the next generation of AI technology.
That letter asked if we should "develop non-human minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us".
In contrast, the new campaign has a very short statement, designed to "open up discussion".
The statement compares the risk to that posed by nuclear war. In a blog post OpenAI recently suggested superintelligence might be regulated in a similar way to nuclear energy: "We are likely to eventually need something like an IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] for superintelligence efforts" the firm wrote.
'Be reassured'
Both Sam Altman and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai are among technology leaders to have discussed AI regulation recently with the prime minister.
Speaking to reporters about the latest warning over AI risk, Rishi Sunak stressed the benefits to the economy and society.
"You've seen that recently it was helping paralysed people to walk, discovering new antibiotics, but we need to make sure this is done in a way that is safe and secure," he said.
"Now that's why I met last week with CEOs of major AI companies to discuss what are the guardrails that we need to put in place, what's the type of regulation that should be put in place to keep us safe.
"People will be concerned by the reports that AI poses existential risks, like pandemics or nuclear wars.
"I want them to be reassured that the government is looking very carefully at this."
He had discussed the issue recently with other leaders, at the G7 summit of leading industrialised nations, Mr Sunak said, and would raise it again in the US soon.
The G7 has recently created a working group on AI.

.. copy and pasted from the Wikipedia article about the "Uyghurs" ..
The Uyghurs,[note 2] alternatively spelled Uighurs,[27][28][29] Uygurs, or Uigurs, are a Turkic ethnic group originating from and culturally affiliated with the general region of Central Asia and East Asia. They speak Uyghur, a Karluk language that shares the same origin with Uzbek. The Uyghurs are recognized as the titular nationality of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. They are one of China's 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities.[30]
The Uyghurs are genetically related to west Eurasians, East Asians, Siberians, South Asians and can trace their ancestry to various peoples and cultures, such as the Tocharians, Uyghur Khanate, Qocho, Kara-Khanid Khanate, and Qara Khitai, that had inhabited or migrated to the region. In the past, the name "Uyghurs" applied only to a small minority of these peoples. Otherwise they did not have a standard collective name[note 3] and were identified by their home settlements. They were historically influenced and often ruled by neighboring Chinese, Mongol, Tibetan, and Turkic civilizations.
Originally followers of many different belief systems, inhabitants of the region were gradually Islamized after the 10th century, especially under the Chagatai Khanate. By the 16th century, most of them identified as Muslims and no longer recognized symbols of their Buddhist past. Islam continues to play an important role in Uyghur culture and identity.
Following the Dzungar–Qing Wars, settlers of various ethnicities were relocated to Dzungaria, which was later combined with the Tarim Basin to the south to become Xinjiang Province.[31] After the Dungan Revolt (1862–1877), Turkic peoples became the dominant demographic group of the region. In 1921 the Soviet Union helped revive the term "Uyghurs", and later Chinese governments grouped Turkic peoples of various backgrounds under that same umbrella category.
More Uyghurs live in the Tarim Basin than in northern Xinjiang, while those residing in Taoyuan County of Hunan are descended from Buddhist Uyghurs during the Ming dynasty.[32] Significant diasporic Uyghur communities exist in Turkic countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey,[33] in addition to smaller ones elsewhere.[34]
Since 2014,[35][36][37] the Chinese government has been accused of subjecting Uyghurs in Xinjiang to widespread persecution, including arbitrary arrest and detention,[38][39][40] forced sterilization,[41][42] and forced labor.[43][44][45] This is denied by China.
Ethnonym
Historical ethnonyms
The Karluk Turkic speaking group in modern-day Xinjiang lacked well-established ethnic endonyms before the 20th century. They would simply identify themselves as "Muslims"[46][47][48] or "Sarts" (meaning merchant, trader, or caravan leader),[49][50] or by their originating oasis such as "Kashgari" for people from Kashgar or "Hotani" for people from Hotan.[51][46]
From the 18th to early 20th century, Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang was commonly referred to as Chanhui (Chinese: 缠回) or Chantou Huihui (Chinese: 缠头回回) (still officially used in Mongolia), which is a Chinese exonym literally meaning turban-wearing Muslims, to be distinguished from Chinese Muslims (nowadays Hui people), commonly referred to as Hanhui (Chinese: 汉回), literally meaning Han Chinese Muslims.[52] Although the term "Hui (Chinese: 回)" or "Huihui (Chinese: 回回)" originates from the term "Uyghur" (Chinese: 回鹘; huí hú), which refers to a Siberian Turkic speaking, instead of Karluk Turkic speaking, ethnic group speaking the "Old Uyghur language", who established the Uyghur Khaganate, Qocho Uyghur Kingdom, and Ganzhou Uyghur Kingdom, the term was later applied to people who believe in any of the Abrahamic religions, such as Judaist Jews (蓝帽回回; lán mào huí huí), Christian Ossetians (绿睛回回; lǜ jīng huí huí), Muslim Chams (占城回回; zhàn chéng huí huí), etc. during the Mongol Empire,[53] and gradually applied specifically to people who believe in Islam, such as Hui people (回族; huí zú), Baihui (白族回回; bái zú huí huí), Menghui [zh] (蒙古回回; měng gǔ huí huí), etc. until nowadays.[54]
Although the semantic meaning of the term "Hui (Chinese: 回)" shifted from the Old Uyghur speaking people to Muslims, the Old Uyghur speaking people themselves were predominately non-Muslims. None of Uyghur Khaganate, Qocho Uyghur Kingdom, and Ganzhou Uyghur Kingdom established Islam as the official religion of their states, and their direct descendant, which was renamed as Yugur people, speaking the Neo-Uyghur language predominately practise Buddhism until nowadays, just like their Old Uyghur ancestors.[55][56][57] Nevertheless, due to this semantic connection, ethnonyms of three of the 56 officially recognised ethnic groups in the People's Republic of China, who are Hui, Yugurs, and Uyghurs, share the same etymological origin.[58][59][60] Although Yugurs and Uyghurs both speak Turkic languages, the Yugur (Neo-Uyghur) language, just like the Old Uyghur language, belongs to the Siberian Turkic branch, and Uyghur language belongs to th Karluk Turkic branch. The two ethnic groups are also genetically very distinct from each other.[61][62]
Usage of the modern ethnonym "Uyghur"
A minority of the modern-day Uyghurs were descendants of the Qocho Uyghur Kingdom based in nowadays Eastern Xinjiang, who spoke the Siberian Turkic Old Uyghur language and predominately practised Buddhism.[63] They were linguistically, religiously and culturally assimilated to the vast majority of Karluk Turkic Chagatai language speaking Muslims in the Chagatai Khanate after the Chagatai conquest.[64][65] Since then, the Uyghur identity in the modern-day Xinjiang had perished until the term "Uyghur" was revived in 1921.[66][67]
One thing worth to mention is that after the split of the Eastern Chagatai Khanate, its minor successor, the Turpan Khanate based in Eastern Xinjiang, was externally referred to as "Uyghurstan" due to Eastern Xinjiang's historical connection to the Qocho Uyghur Kingdom, even if the local population had started speaking the Karluk Turkic Chagatai language and practised Islam,[68] whereas the major sucessor, Yarkent Khanate based in the Tarim basin, which later conquered the Turpan Khanate, was externally referred to as "Kashghar Khanate".[69]
The modern application of the term "Uyghur" to the Karluk Turkic speaking people was in fact a 20th century invention.[70] The Tashkent conference held in the Soviet Union in 1921 gathered Turkic Muslims from the Tarim Basin, who decided to use the term "Uyghur" as the group's modern ethnonym,[71] although they themselves also realised that their ethnicity should not be confused with that of the Uyghur Khaganate of the Medieval history.[72] This usage was then formally accepted by the Soviet Union, and an Uighur raion was established in the modern-day Kazakhstan bordering China.[73] Hoping to divide the Muslim population of Xinjiang, the Sheng Shicai ruled Xinjiang government in China later accepted the modern usage of the term "Uyghur" from the Soviet Union, but the group in Xinjiang was further divided to Uyghurs and Taranchis (modern Uyghurs in Ili) among the 14 ethnic groups recognised at the time.[74] After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the Taranchis were officially counted into the Uyghurs.[75]
Etymology of the term "Uyghur"
In the Uyghur language, the ethnonym is written ئۇيغۇر in Arabic script, Уйғур in Uyghur Cyrillic and Uyghur or Uygur (as the standard Chinese romanization, GB 3304–1991) in Latin;[76] they are all pronounced as [ʔʊjˈʁʊːr].[77][78] In Chinese, this is transcribed into characters as 维吾尔 / 維吾爾, which is romanized in pinyin as Wéiwú'ěr.
In English, the name is officially spelled Uyghur by the Xinjiang government[79] but also appears as Uighur,[80] Uigur[80] and Uygur (these reflect the various Cyrillic spellings Уиғур, Уигур and Уйгур). The name is usually pronounced in English as /ˈwiː.ɡʊər, -.ɡər/ WEE-goor, -gər (and thus may be preceded by the indefinite article "a"),[80][81][82][27] although some Uyghurs advocate the use of a more native pronunciation /ˌuː.i.ˈɡʊər/ OO-ee-GOOR instead (which, in contrast, calls for the indefinite article "an").[25][26][83]
The term's original meaning is unclear. Old Turkic inscriptions record the word uyɣur[84] (Old Turkic: 𐰆𐰖𐰍𐰆𐰺); an example is found on the Sudzi inscription, "I am khan ata of Yaglaqar, came from the Uigur land." (Old Turkic: Uyγur jerinte Yaγlaqar qan ata keltim).[85] It is transcribed into Tang annals as 回纥 / 回紇 (Mandarin: Huíhé, but probably *[ɣuɒiɣət] in Middle Chinese).[86] It was used as the name of one of the Turkic polities formed in the interim between the First and Second Göktürk Khaganates (AD 630–684).[87] The Old History of the Five Dynasties records that in 788 or 809, the Chinese acceded to a Uyghur request and emended their transcription to 回鹘 / 回鶻 (Mandarin: Huíhú, but [ɣuɒiɣuət] in Middle Chinese).[88][89]
Modern etymological explanations for the name Uyghur range from derivation from the verb "follow, accommodate oneself"[80] and adjective "non-rebellious" (i.e., from Turkic uy/uð-) to the verb meaning "wake, rouse or stir" (i.e., from Turkic oðğur-). None of these is thought to be satisfactory because the sound shift of /ð/ and /ḏ/ to /j/ does not appear to be in place by this time.[88] The etymology therefore cannot be conclusively determined and its referent is also difficult to fix. The "Huihe" and "Huihu" seem to be a political rather than a tribal designation[90] or it may be one group among several others collectively known as the Toquz Oghuz.[91] The name fell out of use in the 15th century, but was reintroduced in the early 20th century[77][78] by the Soviet Bolsheviks to replace the previous terms Turk and Turki.[92][note 4] The name is currently used to refer to the settled Turkic urban dwellers and farmers of the Tarim Basin who follow traditional Central Asian sedentary practices, distinguishable from the nomadic Turkic populations in Central Asia.
The earliest record of a Uyghur tribe appears in accounts from the Northern Wei (4th–6th century A.D.), wherein they were named 袁紇 Yuanhe (< MC ZS *ɦʉɐn-ɦət) and derived from a confederation named 高车 / 高車 (lit. "High Carts"), read as Gāochē in Mandarin Chinese but originally with the reconstructed Middle Chinese pronunciation *[kɑutɕʰĭa], later known as the Tiele (铁勒 / 鐵勒, Tiělè).[94][95][96] Gāochē in turn has been connected to the Uyghur Qangqil (قاڭقىل or Қаңқил).[97]

Throughout its history, the term Uyghur has had an increasingly expansive definition. Initially signifying only a small coalition of Tiele tribes in northern China, Mongolia and the Altai Mountains, it later denoted citizenship in the Uyghur Khaganate. Finally, it was expanded into an ethnicity whose ancestry originates with the fall of the Uyghur Khaganate in the year 842, causing Uyghur migration from Mongolia into the Tarim Basin. The Uyghurs who moved to the Tarim Basin mixed with the local Tocharians, and converted to the Tocharian religion, and adopted their culture of oasis agriculture.[98][99] The fluid definition of Uyghur and the diverse ancestry of modern Uyghurs create confusion as to what constitutes true Uyghur ethnography and ethnogenesis. Contemporary scholars consider modern Uyghurs to be the descendants of a number of peoples, including the ancient Uyghurs of Mongolia migrating into the Tarim Basin after the fall of the Uyghur Khaganate, Iranic Saka tribes and other Indo-European peoples inhabiting the Tarim Basin before the arrival of the Turkic Uyghurs.[100]
Uyghur activists identify with the Tarim mummies, the remains of an ancient population that inhabited the region, but genetic research on the mummies and their possible links to modern Uyghurs remains contentious, both for Chinese government officials concerned about ethnic separatism and for Uyghur activists who fear the findings could affect their indigenous claims.[101]
A genomic study published in 2021 found that these early mummies had high levels of Ancient North Eurasian ancestry (ANE, about 72%), with smaller admixture from Ancient Northeast Asians (ANA, about 28%), but no detectable Western Steppe-related ancestry.[102][103] They formed a genetically isolated local population that "adopted neighbouring pastoralist and agriculturalist practices, which allowed them to settle and thrive along the shifting riverine oases of the Taklamakan Desert."[104] These mummified individuals were long suspected to have been "Proto-Tocharian-speaking pastoralists", ancestors of the Tocharians, but the authors of this study found no genetic connection with Indo-European-speaking migrants, particularly the Afanasievo or BMAC cultures.[105] Zhang et al. (2025) investigated a Late Bronze Age site in the far west of the Tarim Basin, dated 1600 to 1400 BC. Its inhabitants overwhelmingly descended from the Sintashta and Andronovo population, with additional ancestry from BMAC (10%) and Tarim_EMBA (12%). Nearly all subjects belonged to Y-DNA haplogroup R-M17.[106]
Origin of modern nomenclature
The Uighurs are the people whom old Russian travelers called "Sart" (a name they used for sedentary, Turkish-speaking Central Asians in general), while Western travelers called them Turki, in recognition of their language. The Chinese used to call them "Ch'an-t'ou" ('Turbaned Heads') but this term has been dropped, being considered derogatory, and the Chinese, using their own pronunciation, now called them Weiwuerh. As a matter of fact there was for centuries no 'national' name for them; people identified themselves with the oasis they came from, such as Kashgar or Turfan.
— Owen Lattimore, "Return to China's Northern Frontier." The Geographical Journal, Vol. 139, No. 2, June 1973[107]
The term "Uyghur" was not used to refer to a specific existing ethnicity in the 19th century: it referred to an 'ancient people'. A late-19th-century encyclopedia entitled The Cyclopædia of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia said "the Uigur are the most ancient of Turkish tribes and formerly inhabited a part of Chinese Tartary (Xinjiang), now occupied by a mixed population of Turk, Mongol and Kalmuck".[108] Before 1921/1934,[clarification needed] Western writers called the Turkic-speaking Muslims of the oases "Turki" and the Turkic Muslims who had migrated from the Tarim Basin to Ili, Ürümqi and Dzungaria in the northern portion of Xinjiang during the Qing dynasty were known as "Taranchi", meaning "farmer". The Russians and other foreigners referred to them as "Sart",[109] "Turk" or "Turki".[110][note 4] In the early 20th century they identified themselves by different names to different peoples and in response to different inquiries: they called themselves Sarts in front of Kazakhs and Kyrgyz while they called themselves "Chantou" if asked about their identity after first identifying as a Muslim.[111][51] The term "Chantou" (纏頭; Chántóu, meaning "Turban Head") was used to refer to the Turkic Muslims of Altishahr (now Southern Xinjiang),[112][113] including by Hui (Tungan) people.[114] These groups of peoples often identify themselves by their originating oasis instead of an ethnicity;[115] for example those from Kashgar may refer to themselves as Kashgarliq or Kashgari, while those from Hotan identity themselves as "Hotani".[51][46] Other Central Asians once called all the inhabitants of Xinjiang's Southern oases Kashgari,[116] a term still used in some regions of Pakistan.[117] The Turkic people also used "Musulman", which means "Muslim", to describe themselves.[46][47][48]

Rian Thum explored the concepts of identity among the ancestors of the modern Uyghurs in Altishahr (the native Uyghur name for Eastern Turkestan or Southern Xinjiang) before the adoption of the name "Uyghur" in the 1930s, referring to them by the name "Altishahri" in his article Modular History: Identity Maintenance before Uyghur Nationalism. Thum indicated that Altishahri Turkis did have a sense that they were a distinctive group separate from the Turkic Andijanis to their west, the nomadic Turkic Kirghiz, the nomadic Mongol Qalmaq and the Han Chinese Khitay before they became known as Uyghurs. There was no single name used for their identity; various native names Altishahris used for identify were Altishahrlik (Altishahr person), yerlik (local), Turki and Musulmān (Muslim); the term Musulmān in this situation did not signify religious connotations, because the Altishahris exclude other Muslim peoples like the Kirghiz while identifying themselves as Musulmān.[118][119] Dr. Laura J Newby says the sedentary Altishahri Turkic people considered themselves separate from other Turkic Muslims since at least the 19th century.[120]
The name "Uyghur" reappeared after the Soviet Union took the 9th-century ethnonym from the Uyghur Khaganate, then reapplied it to all non-nomadic Turkic Muslims of Xinjiang.[121] It followed western European orientalists like Julius Klaproth in the 19th century who revived the name and spread the use of the term to local Turkic intellectuals[122] and a 19th-century proposal from Russian historians that modern-day Uyghurs were descended from the Kingdom of Qocho and Kara-Khanid Khanate formed after the dissolution of the Uyghur Khaganate.[123] Historians generally agree that the adoption of the term "Uyghur" is based on a decision from a 1921 conference in Tashkent, attended by Turkic Muslims from the Tarim Basin (Xinjiang).[121][71][124][125] There, "Uyghur" was chosen by them as the name of their ethnicity, although they themselves note that they were not to be confused with the Uyghur Khaganate of medieval history.[109][72] According to Linda Benson, the Soviets and their client Sheng Shicai intended to foster a Uyghur nationality to divide the Muslim population of Xinjiang, whereas the various Turkic Muslim peoples preferred to identify themselves as "Turki", "East Turkestani" or "Muslim".[109]
On the other hand, the ruling regime of China at that time, the Kuomintang, grouped all Muslims, including the Turkic-speaking people of Xinjiang, into the "Hui nationality".[126][127] The Qing dynasty and the Kuomintang generally referred to the sedentary oasis-dwelling Turkic Muslims of Xinjiang as "turban-headed Hui" to differentiate them from other predominantly Muslim ethnicities in China.[109][128][note 5] In the 1930s, foreigners travelers in Xinjiang such as George W. Hunter, Peter Fleming, Ella Maillart and Sven Hedin, referred to the Turkic Muslims of the region as "Turki" in their books. Use of the term Uyghur was unknown in Xinjiang until 1934. The area governor, Sheng Shicai, came to power, adopting the Soviet ethnographic classification instead of the Kuomintang's and became the first to promulgate the official use of the term "Uyghur" to describe the Turkic Muslims of Xinjiang.[109][123][130] "Uyghur" replaced "rag-head".[131]
Sheng Shicai's introduction of the "Uighur" name for the Turkic people of Xinjiang was criticized and rejected by Turki intellectuals such as Pan-Turkist Jadids and East Turkestan independence activists Muhammad Amin Bughra (Mehmet Emin) and Masud Sabri. They demanded the names "Türk" or "Türki" be used instead as the ethnonyms for their people. Masud Sabri viewed the Hui people as Muslim Han Chinese and separate from his people,[132] while Bughrain criticized Sheng for his designation of Turkic Muslims into different ethnicities which could sow disunion among Turkic Muslims.[133][134] After the Communist victory, the Chinese Communist Party under Chairman Mao Zedong continued the Soviet classification, using the term "Uyghur" to describe the modern ethnicity.[109]
In current usage, Uyghur refers to settled Turkic-speaking urban dwellers and farmers of the Tarim Basin and Ili who follow traditional Central Asian sedentary practices, as distinguished from nomadic Turkic populations in Central Asia. However, Chinese government agents[clarification needed] designate as "Uyghur" certain peoples with significantly divergent histories and ancestries from the main group. These include the Lopliks of Ruoqiang County and the Dolan people, thought to be closer to the Oirat Mongols and the Kyrgyz.[135][136] The use of the term Uyghur led to anachronisms when describing the history of the people.[137] In one of his books, the term Uyghur was deliberately not used by James Millward.[138]
Another ethnicity, the Western Yugur of Gansu, identify themselves as the "Yellow Uyghur" (Sarïq Uyghur).[139] Some scholars say the Yugurs' culture, language and religion are closer to the original culture of the original Uyghur Karakorum state than is the culture of the modern Uyghur people of Xinjiang.[140] Linguist and ethnographer S. Robert Ramsey argues for inclusion of both the Eastern and Western Yugur and the Salar as sub-groups of the Uyghur based on similar historical roots for the Yugur and on perceived linguistic similarities for the Salar.[141]
"Turkistani" is used as an alternate ethnonym by some Uyghurs.[142] For example, the Uyghur diaspora in Arabia, adopted the identity "Turkistani". Some Uyghurs in Saudi Arabia adopted the Arabic nisba of their home city, such as "Al-Kashgari" from Kashgar. Saudi-born Uyghur Hamza Kashgari's family originated from Kashgar.[143][144]
Population

The Uyghur population within China generally remains centered in Xinjiang region with some smaller subpopulations elsewhere in the country, such as in Taoyuan County where an estimated 5,000–10,000 live.[145][146]
The size of the Uyghur population, particularly in China, has been the subject of dispute. Chinese authorities place the Uyghur population within the Xinjiang region to be just over 12 million, comprising approximately half of the total regional population.[147] As early as 2003, however, some Uyghur groups wrote that their population was being vastly undercounted by Chinese authorities, claiming that their population actually exceeded 20 million while presenting "little evidence to support those figures".[148] Population disputes have continued into the present, with some activists and groups such as the World Uyghur Congress and Uyghur American Association claiming that the Uyghur population ranges between 20 and 30 million.[149][150][151][152] Some have even claimed that the real number of Uyghurs is actually 35 million.[153][154] Scholars, however, have generally rejected these claims, with Professor Dru C. Gladney writing in the 2004 book Xinjiang: China's Muslim Borderland that there is "scant evidence" to support Uyghur claims that their population within China exceeds 20 million.[155]

East Turkestan (widely known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China) is home to a predominantly Sunni Muslim Turkic population, primarily Uyghurs, who face severe repression under Chinese authority. The region has a history of attempted independence (1933, 1944) and is currently characterized by intense surveillance, detention camps, and restricted religious freedom for Muslims.

Key Aspects of Sunni Muslims in East Turkestan (Xinjiang):
Demographics and Identity: The indigenous population is Turkic, with Uyghurs being the largest group, alongside Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other groups. They are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslims and share close cultural ties with Central Asia.
Repression and Human Rights: Reports from the House of Commons indicate mass internment camps, forced sterilization, restriction on religious practice (e.g., forbidding fasting, praying, or having beards), and destruction of mosques.
"East Turkestan" vs. "Xinjiang": The term East Turkestan is used by separatists and exiles to refer to the region, rejecting the Chinese name "Xinjiang" (meaning "New Frontier").
Political Activity: The East Turkistan Government in Exile is established in Washington, D.C., and the World Uyghur Congress advocates for the rights of the Turkic population, often noting the lack of support from the broader Muslim world.
Extremism Issues: The UN Security Council has noted the存在 (existence) of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which it lists as a terrorist organization with ties to Al-Qaida. However, activists claim China uses this to justify widespread oppression of ordinary Muslims.

China is the largest country in East Asia. It has a population of approximately 1.4 billion, of whom 91% are Han Chinese. Uyghurs are among the largest of 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leads the political system. Administratively, China is divided into provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and special administrative regions.1
Xinjiang is China’s largest autonomous region. It has a population of approximately 25.85 million and is rich in resources. It borders eight countries and connects China to Central Asian markets and beyond. Its residents include Han Chinese, Uyghurs, and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities.2
Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking Sunni Muslim group. There are approximately 11.5 million in China, mainly in Xinjiang. Historically, Uyghurs were the vast majority but now comprise roughly 40% of the region's population. Many Uyghurs call the region East Turkestan (Sherqi Turkistan).3
Historical Overview
Uyghur history traces back to the Karabalghasan, an early Uyghur empire in what is now Mongolia. In 840 CE, Kyrgyz tribes conquered the empire. Subsequent centuries saw shifting powers among Uyghur, Mongol, and Han-led states. By the 13th century, Mongol rule extended across what is now Xinjiang. The Manchu Qing Empire consolidated control in Xinjiang in the mid-18th century, lost it after 1864, and regained it by 1878.4
After the Qing collapsed in 1911, the emerging Republic of China had limited control in Xinjiang. In the 1930s, discontent over taxation policies that supported Han settlement sparked several Uyghur uprisings, leading up to the short-lived East Turkestan Republics in 1933 and 1944. Both republics were later dismantled. Following the Communist takeover, Xinjiang became an autonomous region in 1955, yet most officials were Han, fueling tensions and resentment.5
The Great Leap Forward (1958-1962) caused significant hardship for Uyghurs and prompted tens of thousands (between 60,000 and 100,000) of Uyghur and Kazakhs to flee China. The 1980s saw unrest tied to Han migration. In 1990, a mosque closure led to the Baren Township uprising, with at least 50 dead. More violence followed through the decade, with the 1997 bombings and attacks in both Xinjiang and Beijing, attributed to Uyghur extremists.6
Major unrest erupted in Urumqi in 2009, leading the then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to seek an independent investigation. The Chinese government reported and attributed thousands of attacks in Xinjiang, from 1990 to 2016, to terrorist, separatist, and extremist groups. They also characterized several violent incidents outside of Xinjiang as acts of terrorism. Simultaneously, reports of some Uyghurs joining armed groups abroad, including Afghanistan and Syria, heightened domestic and international concerns. In 2014, Beijing began the “Strike Hard” campaign, framing it as a counterterrorism initiative within Xinjiang.7

Early Life
Ahmet Abdol was a professor of ancient Egyptology when he formed a theory that the gods and pharaohs of old were actually ancient mutants. Accused of heresy when he announced his findings, Abdol was attacked by a mob who chased him through the streets with his wife and infant daughter. Abdol wrecked his car and his wife died in the burning vehicle, as the mob looked on and did nothing to help him save her.[5]
As the Living Pharaoh
As the Living Pharaoh
Cult of the Living Pharaoh
Abdol discovered he had the ability to manipulate cosmic energy, mainly by absorbing it and projecting it as energy blasts, reflexively firing upon the crowd as his mutant ability manifested. A man approached Abdol in the streets, claiming to represent the Cult of the Living Pharaoh. The cult believed Abdol's research and saw him as a living god reborn. The man offered Abdol the services of the cult, and Ahmet Abdol became the Living Pharaoh.[5]
Abdol's patron was actually the immortal mutant Apocalypse. He considered Abdol to be a broken, beaten man of great potential but without direction. Apocalypse acquired a sample of Alex Summers' DNA (who would one day become the X-Man known as Havok), ensuring that its coding had been modified for his purposes, and had Mister Sinister graft it to Abdol. The experiment was only partially successful and resulted in an unexpected and quite unusual symbiotic relationship wherein Abdol's power was split between them and not shared. Because Alex Summers was young at the time and had not actively manifested his powers, the Living Pharaoh received the majority of their power at first.[6] Deciding to use his powers for his own personal gain, Abdol created a cult around himself and set about his plan to rule the world.
As the Living Monolith
As the Living Monolith
Years later, Abdol discovered that Alex Summers could absorb and project cosmic energy more easily than Abdol could. Abdol kidnapped Alex and used him to increase his power. Abdol found a way to screen Summers' body from ambient cosmic radiation, permitting his own body to attain its latent potential. Abdol was transformed into the Living Monolith, a gigantic mutant with vast cosmic power. The Monolith was defeated while in combat with the X-Men when Alex's latent mutant powers surfaced under the stress of entombment within the mechanism designed to screen him from cosmic radiation.[7] Abdol was captured by the Sentinels,[8] but escaped when the X-Men freed all the captives.[9]
Abdol later stole the Ruby Scarab and battled the Living Mummy. Abdol was virtually powerless now that Summers' powers were active, and he relied on the Scarab to artificially restore his powers.[10]
Later, Havok and his girlfriend Polaris were attacked by henchmen of The Living Pharaoh. Alex was kidnapped before Lorna could stop them. After arriving in New York, Spider-Man came to Havok's aid but accidentally knocked The Living Pharaoh into a containment unit that was to be used to make Alex a living battery to amplify the Pharaoh's powers a million fold. Abdol was transformed into the Living Monolith again. He was beaten by Spider-Man and Thor.[11]
Later, using the Cheops Crystal, Abdol became the Living Monolith again without involving Alex Summers, drawing power from outside sources. He battled Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Cyclops, Storm, and Nightcrawler. Abdol was defeated again when the power pyramid created by the crystal was disrupted, reverting him back to his human form.[12]
He also used other super-heroes, including the Fantastic Four (who gained their superpowers from exposure to cosmic rays). He even killed his own daughter to achieve his goal. Abdol went on a rampage, and several heroes attempted to stop him. Eventually, Abdol grew so large that Thor had to throw him into outer space, where the Living Monolith eventually became a Living Planet, similar to Ego.[5]
Distant relatives of Abdol were recruited by the Cult of the Living Pharaoh, searching for another leader who could harness Abdol's cosmic powers. Leila O'Toole, his alleged niece, became the new cult leader as Plasma.[13]
The essence of the Living Monolith returned to Earth in a small fragment that broke off from the Living Planet. A girl named Akasha Martinez accidentally channeled the Monolith's power and personality, battling Spider-Man.[14]
Abdol was then found floating in space by Deathbird and Bishop.[15] Deathbird betrayed Bishop[16] and with the help of the Skrulls brought Abdol to his cult and Apocalypse[17] who was able to revive him.[6]
The Twelve
Apocalypse wanted to use the Living Monolith to drain the powers of other super-beings. He made a bid for cosmic power by assembling "The Twelve" - a group of mutants who would determine the fate of their kind that included The Living Monolith, Cyclops, Phoenix (Jean Grey), Iceman, Professor X, Storm, Magneto, Bishop, Polaris, Sunfire, Mikhail Rasputin, Nate Grey, and Cable. To secure a new host body, Apocalypse sought to collect the mutants he required to carry out his plan and siphon the awesome energies of "The Twelve". They were wired to a machine that would channel the Twelve's energies into Apocalypse, allowing him to absorb the body of Nate Grey.[18][19] As his teammates fell around him, a powerless Scott saved Nate and merged with the would-be conqueror to create a new evil entity. Jean detected Scott's psyche inside Apocalypse and prevented the X-Men from destroying him, however, he was presumed dead by most of his teammates.[20] The Monolith fled with Apocalypse.[21]
The Once and Future Juggernaut
Claiming 's power
Claiming Cyttorak's power
Years later, having survived Apocalypse and fought his way back to Earth, Abdol wandered aimlessly through the Sahara Desert when he, as well as others around the world, heard Cyttorak's call and went to Thailand to take the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak.[22] Once there, Abdol entered the temple where the gem was and confronted and defeated Storm, who alongside her fellow X-Men were keeping Cyttorak's chosen ones away from the gem. As the former hosts of Cyttorak's power Colossus and Cain Marko fought over the gem in the main chamber of the temple, Abdol entered it and claimed the ruby, becoming the new Juggernaut.[23]
The new Juggernaut
The new Juggernaut
Ready to bring about chaos upon the world, Abdol showed off his newfound powers until he realized that the X-Men weren't paying attention to him. After some time waiting, he was finally attacked by them. Unbeknownst to him, they were only buying Colossus enough time to call Cyttorak and defy him to a battle to the death, the winner taking all of Cyttorak's powers. In the middle of the fight against the X-Men, Abdol lost Cyttorak's powers and became the Living Monolith again, being attacked and apparently destroyed by the once and future Juggernaut, Cain Marko.[24]
Later, Abdol emerged as the Living Monolith and fought White Fox on the border of South Korea, absorbing her life-force and leaving her for dead before disappearing.[25]
The Red Monolith
The Living Testament
The Living Testament
Hoping to remake his body into a more powerful form, Abdol manifested a gargantuan red obelisk as a cocoon for himself, which appeared on Staten Island and began absorbing cosmic radiation for Abdol to consume.[4] When the Red Monolith first appeared, Tyrannus attempted to claim the obelisk for himself but was stopped by the Avengers and Avengers Emergency Response Squad.[26] Although Abdol laid dormant, the Red Monolith gave off energies indicating that it was sentient, which prompted Night Thrasher to launch a long investigation to study it.[27][28][29][30] After several weeks, Abdol's visage emerged from the Monolith and revealed to Night Thrasher his plan to consume Earth's life force to complete his transformation. He provoked Night Trasher into striking him, causing his cocoon to break. Despite the efforts of the AVENG.E.R.S., Abdol emerged in a completely new form and addressed himself the Living Testament.[4] The main Avengers were also called in to deal with the new threat, but the Living Testament began absorbing the lifeforce of every being on the planet, which immobilized both teams. Before he could completely finish, the Living Testament was confronted by Captain Beyond, who was immune to his powers.[31] Captain Beyond used his powers to help the Avengers recover and resume fighting but the Living Testament proved to be too powerful. Conducting a plan with Captain Beyond, Night Thrasher had the Scarlet Witch summon everyone to the Lumina, which the Living Testament desired to control. However, Abdol felt unfulfilled and after some harsh words from Night Thrasher, felt remorse for his actions and reverted back to his human form. As everyone returned to Earth, the Living Testament's actions were reversed and Abdol allowed himself to be turned in. In exchange for standing trial, She-Hulk promised to prosecute the people who killed his family.[32]

Powers
Cosmic Energy Manipulation: As the Living Monolith he had the ability to emit cosmic energy as blasts of concussive force from his eyes. Abdol could only utilize his mutant powers as the Living Monolith and could transform into the Living Monolith only when cosmic radiation was channeled into his body through a focusing medium, such as the Cheops Crystal, or when cosmic radiation was prevented from reaching his counterpart, Havok.[33][34][35][36][37][38]
Energy Absorption: The Living Monolith has been genetically altered by splicing his own mutant genes with those of the mutant X-Man Havok. This modification allows him to absorb large amounts of cosmic radiation - although as Havok absorbs the same radiation, the Living Monolith's powers can be limited when Havok absorbs background radiation (or other suitable energy sources) that might otherwise be used to fuel the Living Monolith.[33][34][35][36][37][38]
Energy Blast: Although Havok projects absorbed radiation as energy blasts, the Living Monolith had a broader range of powers. He is able to project energy as intense heat, a concussive force, or sonic vibrations. Stored energy also affects his physical form - increasing his size, mass, strength, and resistance to injury, and granting him an indefinite lifespan. Although there appears to be no clear upper limit to the amount of power he can absorb, it is also possible to overload his powers.[33][34][35][36][37][38]
Former Powers
Abilities
Abdol has a gifted intellect, and is an expert archaeologist and Egyptologist, with a Ph.D. in archaeology. He is also an advanced student of genealogy, human mutation, and the effects of cosmic radiation.[33][34][35][36][37][38] Upon becoming the Living Testament, Abdol could speak the Builder machine code.[4]

Equipment
As the Living Monolith, Abdol wore body armor of unknown materials. As the Juggernaut, he gained red-colored armor including a helmet that presumably shielded his mind from telepathy, shoulder protectors, wrist protectors, boots, and a loincloth that hung from a thick belt around his waist.[23]
Weapons
As the Living Pharaoh, he wielded a hand-held ankh capable of projecting bursts of concussive force. The Pharaoh was forced to rely on this ankh as an amplifier whenever his powers were waning. He also used hypnotic gems to pacify opponents.[39]
Notes
Although the connection between Ahmet Abdol and Alex Summers was established from the beginning, the reason behind it was not explained until decades later in Uncanny X-Men #376. Abdol's powers came from a procedure performed on him by Mister Sinister. Sinister spliced certain x-genes from Alex Summers into his genome, thus increasing Abdol's ability to absorb cosmic energy. Apocalypse wanted to create the perfect mutant to act as the centerpiece of his ascension machine during The Gathering of the Twelve, and he hoped to enhance Abdol's existing energy absorbing powers to accommodate all the various energies of the other Twelve. Abdol's potential was successfully enhanced, but using Havok's genes had the unintended side effect of keeping Abdol limited so long as Alex Summers was active.
The issue above described Abdol as a non-mutant variant, suggesting Apocalypse was solely responsible for his abilities. This does not fit with Abdol's ability to generate cosmic bolts even before meeting En Sabah Nur, as seen in Marvel Graphic Novel: Revenge of the Living Monolith. Furthermore, Abdol has been described as a mutant many times before and since, including in the same Gathering of the Twelve crossover. As a result, the "non-mutant variant" reference appears to be an error.
The Living Monolith's early appearances were reprinted in various comics.[40][41][42]
As a prominent villain of the X-Men, the Living Monolith appears in various flashbacks.[43][44][45][46

Most NCR readers have probably never heard of a "pro-life, eco-feminist," but there are pro-lifers who take a view of abortion that transcends politics and single-issue voting in favor of a more "consistent ethic of life" coupled with a sense of stewardship for creation.
Today, the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, is a good time to listen the pro-life, eco-feminist view point.
While most eco-feminists hold pro-choice views on abortion, intellectual activists such as Canadian Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, Sr. Rosalie Bertell, and Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai are self-proclaimed eco-feminists who are also pro-life.
In the United States, one of the most prominent pro-life, eco-feminists is author Mary Krane Derr, editor of Nonviolent Choice Directory (www.nonviolentchoice.blogspot.com). She described herself to NCR as an "eco-advocate, vegetarian, inner-city organic community gardener and caretaker of adopted guinea pigs."
Derr agreed to answer some questions posed to her via email on the topic of pro-life, eco-feminism. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
NCR: Can you simply define eco-feminism?
Derr: "Eco-feminism recognizes that the oppression of women and the destruction of the natural world are interconnected forms of domination and destruction."
NCR: What is your eco-feminist critique of abortion?
Derr: "Since the time of the early women's rights advocates, who were often vegetarians and conservationists, eco-feminism has made visible the many interconnections between the oppression of women and the destruction of other-than-human creatures and whole ecosystems.
"Like animals, like anyone or anything looked upon as 'nature,' women are treated as less-than-sentient, as not having innate value or rights of any kind. So are children, whether born or unborn. Sometimes it has been said that they 'have no souls.'
"So our culture massively fails all these sentient, inherently valuable, rights-bearing beings. One tragic and wholly unnecessary result is that millions of pregnant women are backed into corners where abortion appears the only or the least bad choice. Yet both sides of the abortion debate speak in individualistic terms only. This obscures the underlying causes of abortion and hinders the quest for solutions.
"If we had more of an ecological consciousness about how our failures of collective responsibility cause abortion, we would be doing our damnedest to ensure that women always and everywhere have decent choices in pregnancy prevention, and if that does not work, the utmost support before, during, and ever after birth.
"Some women do have abortions in despair over bringing children into such a polluted and wrecked world. We owe such women and their children nothing less than restoring the global environment to a state of health and safety for everyone."
NCR: Are there many people who call themselves pro-life, eco-feminists?
Derr: "I don't know if anyone has bother to count us, but we do exist. We just need to get better organized and more audible and visible. It does seem as if most who identify as eco-feminist are pro-choice on abortion.
"Among those I personally know who identify as pro-life and feminist, there are a high proportion of people, even if they don't name themselves eco-feminists, who see all forms of domination and oppression as interconnected. And out of this consciousness, they practice vegetarianism, otherwise protect animals, follow lives of minimal consumption, challenge environmental pollution, and so forth."
NCR: It appears that a pro-life, eco-feminist is also a pacifist, a vegetarian and a socialist -- or at least anti-capitalist. Is that true?
Derr: "Well, that sure makes sense to me. It makes sense in terms of an overall ahimsa/consistent life ethic. But eco-feminists do not all agree on these matters. For example, some believe the whole thing does not make sense if you eat animals and take their skin and fur, and others do eat meat and use leather."
NCR: Can someone be a pro-choice, eco-feminist or does their stance on abortion invalidate the integrity of their position?
Derr: "Well, having been told for decades that I am not a feminist but an 'anti-choice misogynist,' not to mention told I am incapable of eco responsibility, I am loathe to turn around and disqualify someone else as an eco-feminist because they have a different position from mine on abortion.
"Now, I myself believe that eco-feminism is the most complete, the best it can be, if it includes a genuinely pro-life approach to abortion. Otherwise I wouldn't risk the drubbing that sometimes follows when one expresses such a thing.
"At the same time, I realize that eco-feminists who identify as pro-choice are not the selfish, evil people that some anti-abortionists take them for. They too are struggling to find a way to make peace among men, women, and the Earth, and they too are concerned about the suffering of women and children.
"Some have had abortions themselves or helped loved ones get abortions, and they seek to make sense of and peace with these often difficult experiences through being pro-choice.
"If ecological consciousness is about anything, it's about empathy. And that means empathy for people on the other side of the abortion divide."

Side effects of escitalopram
Like all medicines, escitalopram can cause side effects in some people, but many people have no side effects or only minor ones.
Some of the common side effects of escitalopram will gradually improve as your body gets used to it.
Common side effects
Common side effects of escitalopram happen in more than 1 in 100 people. There are things you can do to help cope with them:
Feeling sick (nausea)
Headaches
A dry mouth
Sweating a lot
Being unable to sleep
Feeling sleepy
Feeling tired or weak
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if the advice on how to cope does not help and any of these side effects bother you or last more than a few days.
Serious side effects
Book an appointment with your doctor if:
you lose or gain weight without trying
you get changes in your periods, such as heavy bleeding, spotting or bleeding between periods
Call your doctor or call 111 now if:
you have constant headaches, long-lasting confusion or weakness, or frequent muscle cramps – these can all be signs of low sodium levels in your blood
you have a high temperature, feel agitated or confused, or you're trembling and twitching – this could be a sign of serotonin syndrome
you start coughing up blood or have blood in your pee
you have black or red poo or blood in your vomit – these can be signs of bleeding from the gut
you are bleeding from the gums, or have bruises that appear without a reason or get bigger
Call 999 or go to A&E now if:
you get painful erections that last longer than 2 hours – this may happen even when you're not having sex
you have severe dizziness or pass out
you get any bleeding that's severe or you cannot stop, such as cuts or nosebleeds that do not stop within 10 minutes
you have thoughts about harming yourself or ending your life
Find your nearest A&E
Do not drive to A&E. Ask someone to drive you or call 999 and ask for an ambulance.
Bring all the medicines you take with you.
Serious allergic reaction
In rare cases, it's possible to have a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to escitalopram.
Call 999 now if:
your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly become swollen
you're breathing very fast or struggling to breathe (you may become very wheezy or feel like you're choking or gasping for air)
your throat feels tight or you're struggling to swallow
your skin, tongue or lips turn blue, grey or pale (if you have black or brown skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet)
you suddenly become very confused, drowsy or dizzy
someone faints and cannot be woken up
a child is limp, floppy or not responding like they normally do (their head may fall to the side, backwards or forwards, or they may find it difficult to lift their head or focus on your face)
You or the person who's unwell may also have a rash that's swollen, raised, itchy, blistered or peeling.
These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction and may need immediate treatment in hospital.
Do not drive yourself to A&E.
The person you speak to at 999 will give you advice about what to do.
Sexual side effects
The good effects of escitalopram may, after a while, improve your sex life as your mood lifts and you become interested in life and relationships again.
Some of the possible sexual side effects include:
painful erections and problems getting an erection and ejaculating
vaginal bleeding and not reaching orgasm the same way as before
a lower sex drive
Sexual side effects usually pass after the first couple of weeks. However, very rarely, they can be long lasting and may not get better even after stopping the medicine.
If these happen and are a problem for you, go back to your doctor to see if there's another treatment you can try.
Other side effects
These are not all the side effects of escitalopram. For a full list, see the leaflet inside your medicine packet.
Reporting side effects
You can report any suspected side effect using the Yellow Card safety scheme.
Visit the Yellow Card website for more information about reporting side effects.

Robert Downey Jr. Reunites With Tom Hiddleston For MCU Before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Release
Marvel fans got a major MCU moment this week as Robert Downey Jr. reunited with Tom Hiddleston during the 2026 Disney Upfronts presentation in New York City. The two stars appeared together ahead of the highly anticipated release of Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
The event took place at the Jacob Javits Center, where Marvel Studios showcased several upcoming projects for Disney+. Downey Jr. and Hiddleston joined fellow MCU star Paul Bettany on stage as Marvel promoted both its streaming slate and future theatrical releases.
While Bettany focused on the newly announced Disney+ series VisionQuest, Downey Jr. and Hiddleston turned attention toward Avengers: Doomsday. Their appearance marked another major promotional step for the upcoming crossover film.
The reunion also served as an early tease for the next era of the MCU before Avengers: Doomsday arrives later this year. Seeing Hiddleston and Downey Jr. together on stage quickly became one of the biggest talking points from the Disney presentation.
But while the Disney Upfronts reunion generated major buzz online, anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday has continued to grow following Marvel’s massive CinemaCon presentation earlier this year.
Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU return fuels Doomsday hype
Marvel has been steadily increasing excitement for Avengers: Doomsday ever since its massive CinemaCon presentation earlier this year. During the studio’s panel, Robert Downey Jr. was officially revealed as Doctor Doom, marking his first MCU role since Tony Stark’s emotional exit in Avengers: Endgame.
The footage shown at CinemaCon teased a darker and more intense direction for the franchise. Set against the ruins of the X-Mansion, the teaser featured MCU heroes facing a devastating new threat while Doctor Doom emerged as the film’s central villain. Thor was shown confronting Doom, while major Marvel teams, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and Earth-616 heroes, appeared throughout the footage.
The film is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest crossover events yet. Returning stars include Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, alongside Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden. The Russo Brothers are also back to direct the project following their previous success with Infinity War and Endgame.

Avengers: Doomsday will serve as the fifth Avengers film in the MCU and the first part of a larger two-film storyline that will continue with Secret Wars. The movie is currently scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
As Marvel continues rolling out new reveals ahead of the film’s release, the reunion between Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Hiddleston has only added more anticipation for what could become one of the MCU’s biggest cinematic events yet.
What do you think about Robert Downey Jr. reuniting with Tom Hiddleston before Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters? Let us know in the comments!

China has been accused of committing crimes against humanity and possibly genocide against the Uyghur population and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups in the north-western region of Xinjiang.
Human rights groups believe China has detained more than one million Uyghurs against their will over the past few years in a large network of what the state calls "re-education camps", and sentenced hundreds of thousands to prison terms.
A series of police files obtained by the BBC in 2022 has revealed details of China's use of these camps and described the routine use of armed officers and the existence of a shoot-to-kill policy for those trying to escape.
The US is among several countries to have previously accused China of committing genocide in Xinjiang. The leading human rights groups Amnesty and Human Rights Watch have published reports accusing China of crimes against humanity.
China denies all allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang. The Chinese government - speaking after details of the Xinjiang Police Files were published - said the peace and prosperity brought to Xinjiang as a result of its anti-terrorism measures were the best response to "all sorts of lies".

Who are the Uyghurs?
There are about 12 million Uyghurs, mostly Muslim, living in Xinjiang, which is officially known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
The Uyghurs speak their own language, which is similar to Turkish, and see themselves as culturally and ethnically close to Central Asian nations. They make up less than half of the Xinjiang population.
Recent decades have seen a mass migration of Han Chinese (China's ethnic majority) into Xinjiang, allegedly orchestrated by the state to dilute the minority population there.
China has also been accused of targeting Muslim religious figures and banning religious practices in the region, as well as destroying mosques and tombs.
Uyghur activists say they fear that the group's culture is under threat of erasure.

Where is Xinjiang?
Xinjiang lies in the north-west of China and is the country's largest region. Like Tibet, it is autonomous, meaning - in theory - it has some powers of self-governance. But in practice, both regions are subjected to major restrictions by the central government.

Xinjiang is a mostly desert region and produces about a fifth of the world's cotton. Human rights groups have voiced concerns that much of that cotton export is picked by forced labour, and in 2021 some Western brands removed Xinjiang cotton from their supply chains, leading to a backlash against the brands from Chinese celebrities and netizens.
In December 2020, research seen by the BBC showed that up to half a million people were being forced to pick cotton in Xinjiang. There is evidence that new factories have been built within the grounds of the re-education camps.
The region is also rich in oil and natural gas and because of its proximity to Central Asia and Europe is seen by Beijing as an important trade link.
In the early 20th Century, the Uyghurs briefly declared independence for the region but it was brought under the complete control of China's new Communist government in 1949.

What are the allegations against China?
Several countries, including the US, UK, Canada and the Netherlands, have accused China of committing genocide - defined by international convention, external as the "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group".
The declarations follow reports that, as well as interning Uyghurs in camps, China has been forcibly mass sterilising Uyghur women to suppress the population, separating children from their families, and attempting to break the cultural traditions of the group.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has said China is committing "genocide and crimes against humanity".
The UK parliament declared in April 2021 that China was committing a genocide in Xinjiang.
A UN human rights committee in 2018 said it had credible reports that China was holding up to a million people in "counter-extremism centres" in Xinjiang.
The Australian Strategic Policy Institute, external found evidence in 2020 of more than 380 of these "re-education camps" in Xinjiang, an increase of 40% on previous estimates.
Analysis of data contained in the latest police documents, called the Xinjiang Police Files, showed that almost 23,000 residents - or more than 12% of the adult population of one county - were in a camp or prison in the years 2017 and 2018. If applied to Xinjiang as a whole, the figures would mean the detention of more than 1.2 million Uyghur and other Turkic minority adults.
The UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the files contained "shocking details of China's human rights violations".

Earlier, leaked documents known as the China Cables made clear that the camps were intended to be run as high security prisons, with strict discipline and punishments.
People who have managed to escape the camps have reported physical, mental and sexual torture. Women have spoken of mass rape and sexual abuse.
What was the build-up to the crackdown?
Anti-Han and separatist sentiment rose in Xinjiang from the 1990s, sometimes flaring into violence. In 2009 about 200 people died in clashes in Xinjiang, which the Chinese blamed on Uyghurs who wanted their own state. But in recent years a massive security crackdown has crushed dissent.
Xinjiang is now covered by a pervasive network of surveillance, including police, checkpoints, and cameras that scan everything from number plates to individual faces. According to Human Rights Watch, police are also using a mobile app to monitor people's behaviour, such as how much electricity they are using and how often they use their front door.
Since 2017, when President Xi Jinping issued an order saying all religions in China should be Chinese in orientation, there have been further crackdowns. Campaigners say China is trying to eradicate Uyghur culture.
The Xinjiang Police Files, which all date from before 2019, shed further light on Uyghurs being punished for alleged crimes that took place years ago. Many appear to have been targeted for their mobile phone use, for listening to "illegal lectures" or not using their phones enough, which is regarded as a sign the user is trying to evade digital surveillance.

What does China say?
China denies all allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang. In response to the Xinjiang Police Files, China's foreign ministry spokesman told the BBC that the documents were "the latest example of anti-China voices trying to smear China". He said Xinjiang enjoyed stability and prosperity and residents were living happy, fulfilled lives.
China says the crackdown in Xinjiang is necessary to prevent terrorism and root out Islamist extremism and the camps are an effective tool for re-educating inmates in its fight against terrorism.
It insists that Uyghur militants are waging a violent campaign for an independent state by plotting bombings, sabotage and civic unrest, but it is accused of exaggerating the threat in order to justify repression of the Uyghurs.
China has dismissed claims it is trying to reduce the Uyghur population through mass sterilisations as "baseless", and says allegations of forced labour are "completely fabricated".
