All massive galaxies are thought to have a supermassive black hole at their center. Scientists think that supermassive black holes tend to sit at the center of every massive galaxy. These monstrous objects (that have such powerful gravitational fields that light cannot escape from them) grow because they take in gas and other material that falls through the galaxy and into the center. Sometimes, however, these black holes end up being offset from the center of galaxies if one galaxy merges with another. Using a cosmological simulation tool known as Romulus, scientists have predicted that after billion of years some supermassive black holes do not join the galactic nucleus at all, but end up wandering through the galaxy. Such wandering black holes might actually be quite common. Using the Romulus simulations, the team, led by Angelo Ricarte at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University, found that around ten percent of the mass in black holes might actually be in these wandering individuals. In addition, the study states that galaxies with a mass similar to that of our own Milky Way galaxy had an average of 12 supermassive black holes wandering around, away from the galactic center, in the simulations. "Wandering supermassive black holes in the Romulus simulations originate from the centres of destroyed infalling satellite galaxies," the study states, adding that the simulations predict "a substantial wandering supermassive black hole population". The next step for the team is to explore the the observational signatures of these wandering black holes in greater detail. The study, titled Origins and demographics of wandering black holes, was published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society in March. This is not the first time that scientists have predicted supermassive black holes might be wandering through space. Earlier this year, researchers at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard & Smithsonian identified one black hole in particular that had a motion described as "peculiar". The researchers looked at a black hole property known as its maser—a beam of radio emissions they sometimes give off. Studying masers lets scientists know how fast black holes are moving through space. One black hole, three million times more massive than the sun, stood out from the ten that were initially observed. Located at the center of a galaxy called J0437+2456, the black hole appeared to be moving at a speed of around 110,000 miles per hour within its galaxy. The team came to two main conclusions. One is that they might have been watching the aftermath of two black holes merging. The other is that the moving black hole may be part of a binary system, in which two orbit one another. A Harvard press release detailing the findings notes that scientists have had a hard time tracking down wandering black holes so far. Credit: LSE Library Born 22 January 1858, Beatrice Webb (nee Potter) became a leading social reformer, Fabian Society member, co-founder of LSE and prolific diarist. Early years Beatrice’s accomplishments are a testament to her deep and active interest in the workings of society, which flourished through her early years. Beatrice received no formal education yet her father was keen for his daughters to read widely and travel with him, which Beatrice did, alongside taking over the management of the household following her mother’s death in 1882. Beatrice began working in social investigation in 1883, firstly for the Charity Organisation Society, and in 1886 was one of a team of researchers for Charles Booth’s famous Survey of London. Founding LSE At LSE, Beatrice is largely known as one of our four co-founders (alongside her husband Sidney, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw). In Beatrice Webb’s diary, held at LSE Digital Library, the events of the 1877-1943 are seen through her eyes. She succinctly records the founding vision of the School, largely led by Sidney. “His vision is to found, slowly and quietly, a ‘London School of Economics and Political Science’ – a centre not only of lectures on special subjects, but an association of students who would be directed and supported in doing original work.” A lasting partnership Beatrice met Sidney Webb in 1890 through the Fabian Society, and their courtship was conducted amidst her attendance at cooperative conferences and research into trade unions in Liverpool and Manchester. They married in 1892, spending a honeymoon researching Irish trade union records. Their 51 years of marriage included many joint ventures, including the creation of LSE. Teaching students Women both studied and taught at LSE from its inception, and Beatrice taught at LSE in the School’s early years on trade unionism and on free competition in the labour market. Both courses were inspired by the Webbs’ research into the history of trade unionism and the text course books included their History of Trade Unionism and Industrial Democracy. Beatrice enjoyed teaching and wrote: “The weekly class brings us into close connection with the work of the School: I see some half dozen students every week and talk over their work with them.” The Minority Report Outside LSE, Beatrice was equally active. In the early 1900s, Beatrice produced a Minority Report that was published alongside the Poor Law Commission of 1905-9. It emerged from a disagreement with the coordinator of the Commission on both the facts of and the solution to poverty. Beatrice’s Minority Report details the need for a coordinated national and local provision of welfare, taking in Education, healthcare, pensions and work. Berzelius established that amber chemical composition consists of a volatile aromatic oil, two soluble fractions of a resin, succinic acid, and 90% of the insoluble residue. At that time, amber was already used in medicine, zoologists widely used its preservative properties, and botanists, by the nature of the insoluble residue, tried to determine from which species of pine it originated. Sometime later, in the Baltic amber – succinite (from the Latin name for pine, which grew in the distant past on the territory of the modern Baltic) discovered the bi-cyclic alcohol borneol and succinic acid. Various amounts of succinic acid were contained not only in unchanged amber, but also in products made of them, which have lain in the ground for more than one millennium. Attempts to ascertain the geographical affiliation of such amber served as an important factor for its further study in the last century. It turned out that succinic acid is a characteristic feature of succinite and have wide healing benefits. This feature has become widely used in the determination of amber from archaeological tombs. According to the German scientist O.Helma, the content of succinic acid in succinite ranges from 3 to 8%: the smallest is in transparent succinite (3.2-4.5%), the highest is in the weathered surface crust (8.2%). This allowed O. Helm to determine the birthplace of amber, which was discovered during archaeological excavations in Italy. Later instrumental methods of analysis were involved in the study of amber. It turned out that amber of various ages (and from different fields) is quite well diagnosed by IR absorption spectra. In some, acidic functions predominate, in others, essential functions. For example, the infrared spectra of amber from the cretaceous sediments of Spain contain absorption bands of free acid groups, and the infrared spectra of oligocene amber have no such bands, instead they have clearly shown strong absorptions corresponding to ether groups. Absolutely no acid functions was in Baltic amber. The method of IR-spectrometry allows you to trace all the changes that occur with amber in the process of weathering. It turns out that this decreases the number of C = 0 bonds. Such spectra, in particular, are characterized by amber, extracted from the burial grounds of thousands of years old. When comparing the IR spectra of amber with the spectra of the resins of modern conifers, was determined the botanical identity of some amber. Amber from the lower cretaceous sediments of Lebanon formed from Araucanian resin. In the Cretaceous, these trees occupied extensive spaces in the southern hemisphere. They still give a significant amount of copal resin. Currently, the composition and structure of amber is being studied. It’s volatile part (about 10% of its weight) has been known for a long time. As shown by later mass spectrometry studies, amber contains more than 40 compounds. Many of them are still unknown. Only abietic acid and its isomers (levopimaric, palustrin, neoabietic, dextropimaric, and isodextropimaric acids) are exctracted from amber In pure form. The first four acids form a chemically related group; they differ only in the position of the double bonds, which are easily displaced inside both rings. Abietic acid is the most stable. From it ancient fossil resins usually consist. New data on the composition of amber were obtained using gas and thin layer chromatography. The amber contains acids: dehydroabietic, isodextropimaric, dehydroisopimaric, sandaracopimaric, diagenic and abietic. They make up a part (20-25%) of Baltic amber that soluble in organic solvents. The rest of amber, not soluble in any of the known solvents, the German scientist I.Joon in early 1816 called succininin. Data from IR spectrometry showed that succinin contains lactone (ester) groups, i.e. it is an ester. So, how did the conversion of abietic acid to ester happened and how did the alcohol function of amber molecule emerge? A significant role in this process was done by the influence of sunlight. If a solution of abietic acid is subjected to ultraviolet irradiation for a long time, it forms formic acid and dehydroabiethen – a compound with an extracyclic double bond. We cant also say that the absorption bands characteristic of an extra – cyclic double bond are found in the spectra of many amber samples. Under the influence of water, the double bond gives an alcohol group, which further participates in the formation of ether. One thing should be noted, that using a mass spectrometer, the molecular weight of compounds isolated from the insoluble amber residue was set to 604. This is twice the mass of abietic acid. It means that it is not abietic acid that is involved in the formation of esters, but its dimer. This assumption is confirmed experimentally: multi – day ultraviolet irradiation of amber contributes to the formation of a compound completely insoluble in organic solvents, with a molecular weight of 604. The melting point of the crude and purified diabietic acid obtained in this way is equal to 365 and 390°C, it is coincides well with the point melting the insoluble residue of amber – succinin (365°C). According to the above, amber composition consists of three groups of compounds: volatile terpenes and sesquiterpenes soluble organic acids insoluble polyesters of these acids with alcohols formed from the same acids The first two groups of compounds were contained in resin (sap), which flowed from pines in the long past epochs. The third group is a product of various transformations of the original resin. The disclosure of the secret of amber allows us to hope that in the near future it will be possible to obtain synthetic amber in much the same way as in the technique of obtaining polymers. At present, synthetic products with the structure of abietic acid are already patented (but not yet produced).

"People would come here for swimming and would use the mud for therapeutic purposes. They would stay here at least for a few days," said Ahad Ahmed, a journalist in the former port town of Sharafkhaneh as he showed CNN photos of people enjoying the lake in 1995. Lake Urmia's demise has been fast. It has more than halved in size -- from 5,400 square kilometers (2,085 square miles) in the 1990s to just 2,500 square kilometers (965 square miles) today -- according to the Department of Environmental Protection of West Azerbaijan, one of the Iranian provinces where the lake is located. There are now concerns it will disappear entirely. Such problems are familiar in many parts of the Middle East -- where water is simply running out. The region has witnessed persistent drought and temperatures so high that they are barely fit for human life. Add climate change to water mismanagement and overuse, and projections for the future of water here are grim. Some Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, Iraq and Jordan, are pumping huge amounts of water from the ground for irrigation as they seek to improve their food self-sufficiency, Charles Iceland, the global director of water at the World Resources Institute (WRI), told CNN. That's happening as they experience a decrease in rainfall. "They're using more water than is available routinely through rain. And so groundwater levels are consequently falling because you're taking water out faster than it's being replenished by the rainfall," he said. That's what's happening in Iran, where a vast network of dams sustains an agricultural sector that drinks up about 90% of the water the country uses. "Both declining rainfall and increasing demand in these countries are causing many rivers, lakes, and wetlands to dry up," Iceland said. The consequences of water becoming even scarcer are dire: Areas could become uninhabitable; tensions over how to share and manage water resources like rivers and lakes could worsen; more political violence could erupt. In Iran, Urmia has shrunk largely because so many people have exploited it, and some of the dams built in its basin mainly for irrigation have reduced the flow of water into the lake. Iran's water woes are already a deadly issue. In one week in July, at least three protesters were killed in clashes with security officers in demonstrations against water shortages in the country's southwest. The country is experiencing some of the driest conditions in five decades, according to the country's meteorological service. The Middle East's winters are projected to get drier the more the world warms, and while the summers will be wetter, the heat is expected to offset its water gains, according to scientists' latest projections published earlier this month by the UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change report. "The problem is, with this whole temperature rise, whatever rainfall will come will evaporate because it is so hot," Mansour Almazroui, director at the Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research at Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz University, told CNN. "The other thing is, "This rain is not necessarily going to be usual rain. There's going to be extreme rainfall, meaning that floods like those happening in China, in Germany, in Belgium, these floods will be a big problem for the Middle East. This is really a big climate change issue." A study by the Iranian Energy Ministry found the demise of the lake was more than 30% attributable to climate change. These changes are not only having an impact on the amount of water available, they are also affecting quality. Lake Urmia is hypersaline, meaning it's very salty. As it has shrunk, the salt concentration has increased and gotten so extreme, using it for irrigation is damaging farmers' crops. Kiomars Poujebeli, who farms tomatoes, sunflowers, sugar beet, eggplant and walnuts near the lake, told CNN that the salty water has been disastrous. "The day the soil will become unfarmable is not far away," he said. A vicious cycle In Jordan, one of the most water stressed countries in the world, people have become used to living with very little water. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that Jordanians will have to halve their per capita use of water by the end of the century. Most Jordanians on lower incomes will live on 40 liters a day, for all their needs -- drinking, bathing and washing clothes and dishes, for example. The average American today uses around 10 times that amount. In many Jordanian homes, water isn't necessarily available every day, said Daniel Rosenfeld, a professor with the Program of Atmospheric Sciences at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. "Jordan now has a critical shortage of water -- water reaches the houses in Jordan once or twice a week, even in the capital Amman," Daniel Rosenfeld, a professor with the Program of Atmospheric Sciences at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The capital actually has existential problems right now, already," Rosenfeld said. Groundwater levels in parts of the country are dropping by well over one meter a year, studies show, and waves of refugees from many countries in the region have put extra pressure on the already stressed resource. The secretary-general of Jordan's Water Authority, Bashar Batayneh, told CNN that the country needs more funding from the rest of the world to deal with this increased demand for water. "Jordan bore the heavy load of the Syrian refugee crises on behalf of the international community and was deeply impacted regarding water. Refugees cost the water sector over $600 million per year while Jordan received a fraction of this amount from the international community," he said. He added that Jordan had much less rain in 2020 than it did the previous year, putting more than a quarter of water resources at risk and halving drinking water sources. But it's not only climate change. The country relies on the Jordan River system, which also runs through Israel, the West Bank, Syria and Lebanon, and dams building along the rivers have severely cut the flow of water flow to Jordan. Jordan, too, uses canals to redirect the river's waters for irrigation. Conflict has flared several times around the river system in the past. It's a transboundary problem also seen in other parts of the region along the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, as well as in northern Africa along the Nile. Jordan, Israel and Syria have gotten better at coordinating management of the river system they rely on, but tensions often erupt. Experts have long warned that water scarcity worsened by climate change could lead to more conflict. Jordan has little choice but to buy large amounts of water from Israel, which has an enormous desalination program, in which it removes salt from seawater to make it fit for human consumption. But desalination is energy-intensive -- using up huge amounts of energy; energy that is not yet green and renewable, and only adds to global warming, a major driver of water scarcity in the first place. As the climate continues to warm and water runs scarce, part of the solution in the Middle East will have to involve reducing water use in agriculture. That can also mean changing the kind of food farmers grow and export, Rosenfeld said. "In Israel, for example, we used to grow a lot of oranges, but at some point, we realized that we are exporting water that we don't have," he said, adding that crops could also be engineered to be more resilient to heat and dryness. And Almazroui, from King Abdulaziz University, said that dams could be better organized to consider changing rain patterns. Coordination on managing rivers that flow across countries also has to improve. But that's not going to help a farmer whose family has owned land for generations and can't necessarily move to wetter climes, or has little control over where a neighboring country might build a dam. Raad al-Tamami, a 54-year-old father of five who lives in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad, relies on the Diyal River, a tributary to the Tigris River, for water. The Diyal has been drying up for years and has forced al-Tamami to halve his fruit production across his three farms. He and his fellow farmers are working on a water rationing schedule, and he sometimes waits up to a month for the water to come. This dependence on more water to ensure food security could ironically put the availability of food at risk -- farmers are only going to keep farming under these difficult conditions for so long. That's what plagues al-Tamami's mind all the time. It is best known for its location, as it runs through the “funny bone” in the elbow. When your ulnar nerve is bumped in this spot, it causes an electric shock sensation down your arm and hand that most people have experienced at least a few times. This nerve can become impaired due to traumatic injury or overuse of the arm.1 Symptoms of overuse may resolve with rest, but serious injuries may require surgical intervention. While it is rare, weakness or sensory loss can remain for the long term.2 Anatomy The ulnar nerve is a long nerve, running through the whole arm. Throughout its pathway from the shoulder down to the hand, it divides into several motor and sensory branches. Structure This nerve is one of the branches of the brachial plexus, and it arises from the C8 and T1 nerve roots. The ulnar nerve gives off several small branches along its path as it continues to travel through the arm. Its first two branches are two motor nerve branches, in the arm. A few inches above the wrist, the nerve divides into the palmar cutaneous branch and the dorsal branch. The superficial branch, deep branch, and the digital branches are in the hand. Articular branches are nerves around joints. They are found throughout the body. The ulnar nerve has an articular branch in the elbow and another at the wrist. Location The ulnar nerve can be found deep underneath muscles in the arm, but it is relatively superficial at the elbow, where it runs along a bone called the medial epicondyle. It is most exposed in this area along the medial epicondyle, lying underneath the skin, without bony or muscular protection. The nerve runs through the cubital tunnel at the elbow and passes through the Guyon tunnel in the wrist. Its branches extend into the lateral (towards the pinky finger) side of the palm, the lateral side of the back of the hand, the pinky finger, and the lateral half of the ring finger. This nerve also controls the movement of several muscles in the arm and hand. Motor: Small motor branches of the ulnar nerve supply muscles that move areas of the hand and fingers. The flexor carpi ulnaris in the arm flexes the hand. Part of the flexor digitorum profundus in the arm flexes the pinky finger and ring finger. Small motor branches of the ulnar nerve in the hand move the pinky finger and ring finger and help you spread your fingers. Sensory: The sensory branches of the ulnar nerve relay sensation as follows: The dorsal cutaneous branch carries sensation from the back of the pinky finger and half of the back of the ring finger. The palmar cutaneous branch carries sensation from the lateral portion of the palm directly near the pinky finger. The superficial branch carries sensation from the front of the pinky finger and half of the ring finger. Associated Conditions There are several conditions that can affect the ulnar nerve. Early symptoms include paresthesias (unusual or unpleasant sensations) of the pinky finger, half of the ring finger, and the lateral portion of the hand.1 These conditions can eventually result in weak wrist flexion and/or diminished strength of the pinky or ring finger. Funny Bone Irritation A small bump in the elbow can cause a sudden electric shock sensation that lasts for a few seconds.2 This is not a pleasant sensation, but it is called “funny” because the ulnar nerve runs along a bone called the humerus. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Compression of the ulnar nerve causes cubital tunnel syndrome. If you have swelling of the areas near your elbow, you can experience paresthesias, pain, diminished sensation, or decreased muscle control in the areas of the hand that are supplied by the ulnar nerve.3 This usually occurs due to overuse, such as typing or repetitive physical work. Guyon's Canal Syndrome Guyon’s canal syndrome is also called ulnar tunnel syndrome. You can have swelling in the wrist around the ulnar nerve as it reaches the hand. This can also occur due to overuse4 and is most commonly associated with biking. Ulnar Nerve Pressure at the Wrist and Elbow Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition that is caused by pressure in the neck.5 This situation compresses the nerves of the brachial plexus, affecting the function of the ulnar nerve. Trauma Trauma in the arm or hand can cause damage to the ulnar nerve or any of its branches, affecting its function. Ulnar Nerve Injuries Testing Ulnar Nerve Function There are a few quick ways of testing the ulnar nerve function. Froment’s sign is a test in which your doctor asks you to grasp a paper between your thumb and forefinger.6 Ulnar nerve weakness may cause you to be unable to hold on to the paper as it is pulled from you or may result in flexion of your thumb as you hold onto the paper, compensating for your weakness. Tinel’s sign is a diagnostic test in which your doctor taps on your nerve in the suspected area of compression (the wrist or elbow).7 If your symptoms, such as tingling or pain recur, then the area that was tapped is the area of nerve compression. Claw sign is a description of a claw-like flexion of the hand, which results from weakness of the hand muscles that are supplied by the ulnar nerve.2 Claw hand is usually accompanied by muscle atrophy in the hands. Atrophy is thinning of the muscles that can occur as a result of the inability to use them (in this case, because of the nerve impairment). Rehabilitation If you have compression of your ulnar nerve, you can experience recovery if it is treated early, before permanent damage occurs.8 Resting your arm or hand and avoiding the damage-inducing physical movements is usually recommended to prevent continued overuse. Often, ice applied to the area of overuse can help diminish inflammation.1 A splint is often recommended, particularly at night.2 This is because it is very common to flex the arm or wrist at night. Flexing stretches the ulnar nerve, but a splint can inhibit stretching it. Be sure to talk to your doctor or therapist before using a splint so that you can use it correctly. A tight splint can cause additional damage. Anti-inflammatory medications, including Advil (ibuprofen) and Aleve (naproxen), can help decrease inflammation around the nerve.1 Physical therapy or occupational therapy may be helpful if you have muscle atrophy or if you need to rebuild your muscle control.2 Surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure on the nerve or to repair nearby structures if you have experienced a traumatic injury.9 After surgery, you should expect to have physical therapy or occupational therapy as you build up strength and learn how to regain muscle control.

For the first time, scientists have detected light from behind a black hole, and it fulfills a prediction rooted in Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity. Stanford University astrophysicist Dan Wilkins and his colleagues observed X-rays that were released by a supermassive black hole located at the center of a galaxy that is 800 million light-years from Earth. These bright light flares are not unusual because although light can't escape a black hole, the enormous gravity around it can heat up material to millions of degrees. This can release radio waves and X-rays. Sometimes, this super-heated material is hurled out into space by rapid jets -- including X-rays and gamma rays. But Wilkins noticed smaller flashes of X-rays that occurred later and were different colors -- and they were coming from the far side of the black hole. "Any light that goes into that black hole doesn't come out, so we shouldn't be able to see anything that's behind the black hole," said Wilkins, study author and research scientist at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, in a statement. However, the black hole's strange nature actually made the observation possible. "The reason we can see that is because that black hole is warping space, bending light and twisting magnetic fields around itself," he said. The study published last Wednesday in the journal Nature. "Fifty years ago, when astrophysicists starting speculating about how the magnetic field might behave close to a black hole, they had no idea that one day we might have the techniques to observe this directly and see Einstein's general theory of relativity in action," said Roger Blandford, study coauthor and the Luke Blossom Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences and professor of physics at Stanford University, in a statement. Einstein's theory, or the idea that gravity is matter warping space-time, has persisted for a hundred years as new astronomical discoveries have been made. Some black holes have a corona, or a ring of bright light that forms around a black hole as material falls into it and becomes heated to extreme temperatures. This X-ray light is one way scientists can study and map black holes. As gas falls into a black hole, it can spike to millions of degrees. This extreme heating causes electrons to separate from atoms, which creates magnetic plasma. The powerful gravitational forces of the black hole cause this magnetic field to arc high above the black hole and twirl until it breaks. This isn't unlike the sun's corona, or hot outer atmosphere. The sun's surface is covered in magnetic fields, which cause loops and plumes to form as they interact with charged particles in the sun's corona. This is why scientists refer to the ring around black holes as a corona. "This magnetic field getting tied up and then snapping close to the black hole heats everything around it and produces these high energy electrons that then go on to produce the X-rays," Wilkins said. While studying the X-ray flares, Wilkins spotted smaller flashes. He and his fellow researchers realized the larger X-ray flares were being reflected and "bent around the black hole from the back of the disk," allowing them to see the far side of the black hole. "I've been building theoretical predictions of how these echoes appear to us for a few years," Wilkins said. "I'd already seen them in the theory I've been developing, so once I saw them in the telescope observations, I could figure out the connection." The observations were made using two space-based X-ray telescopes: NASA's NuSTAR and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton. More observation will be needed to understand these black hole coronas and the European Space Agency's upcoming X-ray observatory, called Athena, will launch in 2031. "It's got a much bigger mirror than we've ever had on an X-ray telescope and it's going to let us get higher resolution looks in much shorter observation times," Wilkins said. "So, the picture we are starting to get from the data at the moment is going to become much clearer with these new observatories."
