The 6 Best Demi Moore Movies Ghost (1990) Paramount Pictures The one with the pottery! It’s also the one where they say “Ditto,” but everyone forgets that. Oh, and it’s also the movie that nabbed Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar! Yep, that’s right, View co-host Whoopi Goldberg has won an Oscar and Demi Moore has never even been nominated until this year. Of course, Goldberg deserved her win – she’s compelling AF in this movie and earns every laugh. But Moore is the film’s emotional center: her trembling voice, her distraught tears, and her steely strength all make the film work. It’s no wonder she got her first Golden Globe nomination for it. The one you should never see, even if your life depends on it Parasite (1982) Embassy Pictures Don’t watch this movie! I thought it was, like, a prequel to Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning movie or, like, the original version of it, but nope, it’s a bargain bin reject B movie about Demi Moore and her friends running from a parasite that’s trying to eat all of Earth. But the parasite looks like a cross between a stoner piranha and a Venus fly trap, like if Audrey II failed out of high school and became a bagger at Farm Fresh. This is unfortunately Demi Moore’s first major film role, to her chagrin, but everyone has to start out somewhere. Plus, she more than made up for it by *gestures to previous six entries*. Following the death of the Monitor, Luthor rallies the remaining heroes and villains against the Anti-Monitor. He is integral in defeating the threat and ensuring the continued existence of the remaining Earth. After the Crisis is concluded, Luthor opens a portal into a paradise dimension, where he travels with the Earth-Two Kal-L and his wife Lois Lane, and the Earth-Prime Superboy. This expends the last of his dimensional powers. Countdown to Infinite Crisis Superboy-Prime and Alex Superboy-Prime and Alex Luthor eventually comes to be dissatisfied with the paradise dimension and the actions of the people in the main universe; he becomes determined to fix reality and restore the Multiverse. To this end he convinces Superboy-Prime to aid him in escaping the dimension. Superboy-Prime's subsequent assaults on the dimensional barrier causes numerous time ripples which distort reality in the main universe. Luthor is able to harness his slowly redeveloping dimensional powers, and the pair escape their dimension and begin wreaking havoc on the main universe. For his part, Luthor poses as Lex Luthor to establish the Society of Super-Villains, orchestrates the destruction of magic, and takes control of Brother Eye. Infinite Crisis The Death of Alex Luthor The Death of Alex Luthor Luthor and Superboy-Prime's actions are revealed to be in aid of creating a sort of inter-dimensional tuning fork, which he is able to use to reconstitute a number of alternate Earths. He begins to merge these Earths in an attempt to create the perfect Earth. In so doing he brings about numerous disasters that destroy countless lives. He is stopped from continuing his experiments when Superboy-Prime and Superboy's fighting destroys the tower that he is using as a tuning fork. With the destruction of the tower, all of the Earths collapse into the New Earth. His plan a failure, Luthor decides to forcibly conquer the current Earth and shape it to his will. He incites his incarnation of the Society to attack the surviving heroes. After a pitched battle during which he severely wounds Nightwing, Luthor is defeated and he is almost killed by Batman, though he is saved by Wonder Woman. He flees, and later vows to continue his efforts to recreate the world as he sees fit. He is prevented from carrying out any further plans by the Joker, who sprays him in the face with acid, electrocutes him, and shoots him in the head with a shotgun. His body is later recovered from an alleyway by the Gotham City Police Department, and eventually entombed beneath the Hall of Justice. Blackest Night Black Lantern Alex Luthor Black Lantern Alex Luthor Luthor is reanimated by a Black Power Ring, becoming a member of the Black Lantern Corps. He gathers a number of black rings and resurrects a number of characters who had been killed by Superboy-Prime during the Infinite Crisis. He travels to Earth-Prime where he and the resurrected characters attack and overwhelm Superboy-Prime. When Superboy-Prime willingly dons a Black Lantern Ring, his emotional instability results in an explosion that destroys Luthor and the other Black Lanterns. Resurrection Crime Syndicate of Amerika Crime Syndicate of Amerika On New Earth, efforts are made by the Crime Syndicate of America to resurrect Luthor. This is prevented at the last minute by the betrayal of Doctor Impossible, who attempts to use the resurrection machine to resurrect Darkseid. This fails as well, and the villainous Omega Man is created instead. Luthor is briefly resurrected by the Tangent Green Lantern, and helps to defeat Omega Man and the Crime Syndicate, redeeming himself in part for his past villainy. Powers and Abilities Luthor possesses a genius-level intellect, and he is skilled at manipulating others. He possesses matter manipulation powers, which manifest as offensive blasts and the power to open portals between dimensions. These powers can be exhausted if overused. Black Lantern Ring While as a member of the Black Lantern Corps, Alex's ring retained all his abilities and memories prior to his death. The Black Lantern Ring provided the user to see the emotional state of others as an aura of color. The ring charged itself by ripping out the hearts of their victims and absorbed the energy from the heart. Luke was finally able to defeat Abeloth by simultaneously striking at the host bodies she possessed, banishing her to the shadows — though he was not convinced of her ultimate defeat. ✕ Remove Ads Abeloth’s Origins Are Tied to the Popular Mortis Arc of ‘The Clone Wars’ Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars may have noticed the importance of the Father, the Son, and the Daughter. The three Force aspects made their appearance during the Season 3 episode "Overlords," and began to influence Anakin Skywalker (Matt Lanter) as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor) and Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein). The Father (Lloyd Sherr) intends for Anakin to take his place, while the Son (Sam Witwer) seeks to tip the balance between light and dark in favor of darkness. To that end, he makes some rather aggressive moves; first, he kills the Daughter, then he shows Anakin visions of his eventual future as Darth Vader. Finally, the Son corrupts Ahsoka and pits her against Anakin, leaving the Father to sacrifice his life to set things right. "Overlords," along with "Altars of Mortis," and "Ghosts of Mortis," form what is known as the "Mortis Trilogy." 'Ahsoka's Peridea Hints At Abeloth's Return to Mainstream Star Wars Play Video ✕ Remove Ads The Mortis Trilogy has gone on to play a role in Filoni's other Star Wars projects; Rebels features a sequence where Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) discovers a mural depicting the Father/Son/Daughter at the Jedi Temple in Lothal. Ahsoka encounters a similar mural in the Ahsoka series premiere, "Master and Apprentice," when she discovers the map that leads to Ezra's location. The finale ends with Ray Stevenson's Baylan Skoll exploring statues of Mortis' Father and Son on Peridea. With these characters making a prominent appearance, surely Abeloth could play a major role in Ahsoka or future Star Wars projects. It wouldn't be the first time a character from the old Expanded Universe made it into the new canon: Grand Admiral Thrawn served as the antagonist of a trilogy of novels before being brought into Star Wars Rebels. There's also the bounty hunters Durge and Beilert Valance; Durge was originally in Gennedy Tartakovsky's Star Wars: Clone Wars micro-series, while Valance appeared in the original run of Marvel's Star Wars comics. Both have made appearances in the Star Wars: Bounty Hunters comic. Abeloth could make for an impressive antagonist, as she is literally malevolence incarnate. She also isn't easy to kill — she managed to take control of multiple bodies during her tenure in the Legends arc. With Filoni slated to direct a movie that will tie together events from Ahsoka as well as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, it would require a major threat to bring these heroes together. She stands right where a bunch of sand dunes meet a vast ocean, portending big changes ahead for Arrakis. So, who is this Alia? As you might imagine, she’ll probably have a much larger role in the third film, whenever that gets made. Alia Atreides is a key figure in Dune Messiah, Frank Herbert’s wild and pulpier sequel to Dune, though her role in this film is actually cut down from what happens in the novel. Throughout the film, Alia is still in utero, though her fetus communicates telepathically with her mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and by proxy with Paul. While that alone is a pretty wild bit of sci-fi, the book goes even further: Paul and Jessica spend years in the desert with the Fremen before staging their attack on the Harkonnens, so Jessica gives birth to Alia there. Her daughter is then born with all sorts of precognitive abilities and mentally develops preternaturally quickly. Basically, you have a four-year-old with bright blue eyes holding her own in debates with the adults around her (in David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune, Alia was played by Alicia Witt in a tiny Bene Gesserit costume). Paul kills Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skårsgard) in the climactic battle between the Fremen (the indigenous people of Arrakis) and the Harkonnens in Villeneuve’s movie. But in the book, Alia gets involved in the fight herself. She leads Fremen fighting parties, gets captured by the Harkonnens, and then kills the Baron herself with a poisoned Gom Jabbar (it’s pretty badass, and also like that one meme). Her skills in battle earn her the title St. Alia the Knife. So why is Alia… like that? Remember, Paul is the product of years of selective breeding by the Bene Gesserit, and his mother jumped the gun on the secretive sisterhood’s plans by giving birth to a son instead of a daughter in the first place. (Jessica believed Paul could be the messiah-like Kwisatz Haderach, a man who can take on the abilities of a Reverend Mother, the most powerful among the Bene Gesserit. The rest of the sisterhood, meanwhile, thought it might take another generation.) So Alia, like her brother, has all those highly-powerful genes. When her mother gets exposed to the Water of Life in that Fremen ritual we see in Part Two — an act which, as Jessica discovers, mirrors the Bene Gesserit process of anointing a Reverend Mother — Alia goes through the same experience in the womb. She, like Jessica and eventually Paul (once he completes the ritual himself and survives, which a man could supposedly only do if he’s the Kwisatz Haderach), gains the ability to access generations of memories based down through all that breeding. That gives her telepathy, as well as the ability to project her memories into others, and all sorts of other skills. But in this case, that kind of power is also dangerous — it’s risky to give someone superpowers before they’ve fully developed eyes and teeth. The Bene Gesserit consider Alia an abomination because she may become overwhelmed by the personalities of those who came before her. As the movie reveals, Jessica is the Baron’s daughter, and you really wouldn’t want those ancestors banging around in your brain. As a side note, it’s interesting to place her in a vision in front of a giant body of water. Villeneuve’s movies’ have underemphasized it, but a key aspect of Herbert’s novels is that the Fremen are engaged in a long (like, millennia-spanning) project to transform the environment of Arrakis itself from desert into greenery (Herbert was really inspired by dune reclamation projects in real life). When Paul sees Alia by the water, he’s also seeing a future with a successfully transformed planet — though of course, flooding Arrakis with water would drown the sand worms, which produce the spice, on which depends so much of the empire’s whole economy. What an ecological metaphor! So what’s Anya Taylor-Joy going to get up to in Dune: Part Three? It’s to hard know how Villeneuve and company will work around the ages of their cast of movie stars, but Dune: Messiah takes place 12 years into the future, so we can assume we’re in for a time jump and will be seeing Taylor-Joy playing grown-up Alia there. (Maybe they’ll also say that she’s matured quickly thanks to those powers, or find some other way to obfuscate the fact that Timothée is one year older than Anya in real life). The key thing is that, in the book, Alia works as Paul’s ally, helping him shore up support within his ever-growing empire, while also entering into a romance with a newly-revived Duncan Idaho. Yup! Jason Momoa will be coming back, because his Han Solo-esque rogue (to be clear, Dune inspired Star Wars, not the other way around) gets revived as a “ghola,” or clone, named Hayt. (Let the age gap discourse begin.) He and Alia work together to try to unravel a plot against the empire — it’s all very Attack of the Clones, in more ways than one. Their dynamic is complicated by the fact that Hayt is actually a sleeper agent, programmed to take down the Atreides. That plan doesn’t succeed due to various plot developments and Alia and a de-programmed Duncan do get together, but the key thing is that as Alia grows more powerful, she also tends to become more ruthless. At the end of the book, acting as regent, she defies Paul’s wishes and orders the execution of those responsible for a plot against him. That arc sets up some even wilder developments in Children of Dune, which Villeneuve may not adapt, but which has one key storyline he seems to be hinting at with those visions in Dune: Part Two. You know how Paul keeps seeing an imperious figure walking through the desert surrounded by masses of people in despair? And then he discovers that the figure is… a woman? (In one shot that figure looks like Ferguson in profile, but let’s just say this is general “women in the bloodline” foreboding.) Well, in the books, when Alia is regent, she succumbs to the personality of her grandfather Baron Harkonnen and becomes a tyrant in her own right. Because he’s in control, she also becomes obsessed with sex. Alia’s only stopped by Paul and Chani’s twin children, who come into the picture at the end of Dune: Messiah and are pre-born themselves but more in control of their powers. With their help, she tries to wrest control of her faculties from the Baron’s influence, but then jumps out a window to kill herself. (In the 2003 Children of Dune TV miniseries adaptation, she stabs herself with a crysknife instead, which has a nice “live by the knife, die by the knife” poetry.) Possession and defenestration might be plotlines too far out for Warner Bros. to adapt. But I really do hope that Villeneuve gets to some of that part of Alia’s arc, if only because I hope Taylor-Joy’s take on the Harkonnen voice is as wildly Skarsgårdian as Austin Butler’s.

Joanna Pang Atkins, her former costar on the show, revealed the news on social media Sunday, and EW was able to confirm Cameron's death through one of the actress' close friends in Hawaii. "Sad to post that JoAnna Cameron 'The Mighty Isis' has flown to heaven," Atkins wrote on Twitter. "She suffered a stroke and passed away from complications this past Friday. We shared the wonderful lasting experience of making 'The Secrets of Isis'. May she RIP." Cameron was born Patricia on Sept. 20, 1948, according to her friend in Hawaii. We hear Taylor-Joy’s voice in the movie's final scenes as she says, “What is happening, mother?” In another change from the book, the adult version of Alia is glimpsed by Paul in one of his prescient visions of the future, and it’s in this context that Taylor-Joy appears as Alia in Dune: Part Two, which foreshadows her pivotal influence in the subsequent two novels, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. To be clear, although Taylor-Joy’s Alia does present a faithful-ish version of the character from those two novels, the idea that Paul has a future vision of his grown-up unborn sister is unique to Dune: Part Two and is not a thing that happens in the first Dune novel. Indeed, as Irulan’s diary entries confirm, we’re still in 10,191, the same year as the first film. In the novel, Alia is born as a super-powered baby, able to talk as a newborn because she possesses all the memories of her ancestors. In Dune: Part Two, we see the event that leads to this: Jessica takes the Water of Life in order to become the Fremen’s Reverend Mother, giving her all the collective memories of the Fremen. This action changes Alia in the womb, and sets her on a path to that leads Bene Gesserit in the second and third books to call her a “preborn abomination.” By the third book, Children of Dune, Alia pulls a Kylo Ren, and colludes with the memory/spirit of her grandfather, Baron Harkonnen, to gain more power. Before that, in Dune Messiah, she falls in love with the Mentat clone of Duncan Idaho, initially known as “Hayt.” But, for Anya Taylor-Joy’s Alia, all of that is in the future. For now, what Dune: Part Two doesn’t do is depict Alia as a walking, talking, wise-beyond-her-years murder baby. In the novel, it is baby Alia who slays the Baron, which is why in the future she’s known as “Alia of the Knife.” In the new film, Paul takes out the Baron, which is a huge change from the book, and arguably robs Alia of her most memorable moment from the original novel. Both the 1984 and 2000 movie versions of Dune faithfully recreated this idea, with the child Alia being played by Alicia Witt and Laura Burton, respectively. Before Taylor-Joy, the only person to have played Alia as an adult is Daniela Amavia in 2003’s Children of Dune. Will Alia be in Dune 3... or Dune 4? Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica in Dune 2 Don’t mess with Alia, or her mother Lady Jessica.Warner Bros. We don’t yet know if Denis Villeneuve will make a third Dune film, but Taylor-Joy’s appearance in Dune: Part Two strongly suggests that the story could continue in at least one more movie. That said, if Villeneuve did create a third Dune movie based only on the events of Dune Messiah, he would, again, need to futz with the timeline. Just as Timothée Chalamet is a little older in the films than Paul is in the book, Alia would need to be older than a teenager to match up with the fact that Anya Taylor-Joy is clearly not a teenager. So, the glimpse of the adult Alia in Dune: Part Two isn’t just tantalizing because it suggests the possibility of a film adaptation of Dune Messiah, the second book. Instead, because Anya Taylor-Joy is 27 years old in real life, she’s actually a closer match for Alia in Children of Dune, the third book. Villeneuve has been adamant that he’s only interested in making one more Dune film after Dune 2, and that the hypothetical movie would adapt the events of Messiah. And yet, by casting Anya Taylor-Joy in Dune 2, Villeneuve has already, at least partially, adapted the third novel, too. Dune: Part Two is out in theaters now.

Unlike his fellow "Brit Pack" contemporaries like Colin Firth, Tim Roth, and Gary Oldman, all regular faces on talk shows, the three-time Oscar winner rarely gives interviews. When he does, he doesn't give much away, as he told The Guardian: "Actors should never give interviews. Once you know what color socks they wear, you'll remember it next time you see them performing, and it will get in the way. It is not in anyone's interest." We may be familiar with his great roles, from Bill the Butcher in "Gangs of New York" to Reynolds Woodcock in "Phantom Thread," but his personal life largely remains a mystery, with little tidbits that emerge only adding to his mythos. How does the son of a poet laureate and classically trained actor become a fan of Millwall, the London football club best known for its association with hooliganism? What compelled him to take a break from acting to becoming a shoe-maker's apprentice in Florence? It paints a picture of a private man driven by his own passions rather than a desire for fame and fortune, and this was reflected in his choosiness with film roles. When it came to preparing for his onscreen characters, his devotion to method acting is legendary. For "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," he learned Czech so he could speak his lines in English, with a Czech accent. That's impressive; I've lived in the Czech Republic for 13 years and I can only just manage a few Czech sentences in an English accent. Perhaps the most extreme example came during the filming of "My Left Foot" where he played the severely disabled artist Christy Brown. Day-Lewis refused to break character. He later moved on to performing at the Bristol Old Vic where he understudied Pete Postlethwaite, with whom he would form a brilliant father-son relationship in Jim Sheridan's powerful courtroom drama, "In the Name of the Father." He soon quit the illustrious company when he became exasperated by kids giggling at him during school matinees (via Contact Music): "We'd do school matinees as a part of the fun (of touring) and they were pretty tough towns, some of these places – like the industrial Midlands in England. If they're not throwing stones at other people's windows, they're going to see Romeo And Juliet. You walk on stage and you had to wait for 10 minutes for them to stop laughing before you could even get a word out." While he was making his transition to film with eye-catching performances in "A Room With a View" and "My Beautiful Laundrette," he still kept up stage work until 1986. Then, after a three-year hiatus and his first Oscar triumph for "My Left Foot," he returned to the stage to play "Hamlet" at the National Theatre in London. Stepping into the plum role played on British stage over the years by actors as varied as Sir John Gielgud, Richard Burton, Michael Sheen, Ben Whishaw, Jude Law, and Maxine Peake, it should have been something of a coronation for the quickly rising star. In the end, it turned into a nightmare. Though this be madness, yet there is method in't... Tristram Kenton/The Guardian Daniel Day-Lewis took to the stage to play the Dane in March 1989. Critics generally liked the new production (via New York Times), but their reviews of Day-Lewis's performance in the enormously taxing role were only mixed. The Sunday Telegraph felt that his portrayal was weak, and lacked "the deep reserves of bitterness and bitter intelligence that make Hamlet a hero as well as a victim." Another said his halting delivery of the Bard's famous lines meant, "We lost the poetry," while another saw potential with "a performance of much promise, still in awe of the play and the role." Six months later, Day-Lewis was out, replaced by Ian Charleson for the rest of the run. He reportedly walked off in the middle of a performance and was found sobbing backstage. Later diagnosed with stress (according to the LA Times) the rumor went that, like Hamlet himself, Day-Lewis had seen the ghost of his deceased father. He later clarified (via Time): "I may have said a lot of things in the immediate aftermath, and to some extent I probably saw my father's ghost every night, because of course if you're working in a play like "Hamlet," you explore everything through your own experience. You think you're traveling a vast distance to understand another life, but it may be that you're bringing that life toward you at the same time. What allows that work to live is the common experience, the bond between the two of you. It's utterly delusional to say you become some other person—you don't. But you do get to know yourself in a different way, through the prism of that other life. That correspondence between father and son, or the son and the father who is no longer alive, played a huge part in that experience. So yes, of course, it was communication with my own dead father... but I don't remember seeing any ghosts of my father on that dreadful night!" He left the stage that night never to return. Thankfully he recovered from the breakdown and returned to the screen instead. She later moved to the US and became a best-selling author and psychologist. Eger said she doesn't run away from the past and thinks of everything as a learning experience. Eger spoke slowly and warmly, and it became clear that her positive mindset, empathy, and sense of humor are her defining features. "I don't know many, many things. But I'm okay with that. I'm human," she said. Eger shared some of the key principles that have guided her through life. Don't run away from the past Eger didn't speak to anyone about surviving the Holocaust for decades, living with the trauma in silence. In her 40s, Eger decided it was time to come to terms with her past. For her, that entailed becoming comfortable having conversations about her experience, returning to Auschwitz, writing a memoir, and ultimately accepting what happened to her. "Of course, I never forget what happened, but I don't live in Auschwitz. I stay in the present," Eger said. Engle, who works closely with his grandmother to tell her story publicly, said that accepting being a Holocaust survivor enabled her to move forward. "Being able to look it in the face and say, 'this is what happened to me. I don't approve of it. I don't like what happened to me, but I accept it,'" he said. That's what helped her start the version of her life she leads today, Engle added. Eger said although she was victimized by the Nazi regime, it was important for her to shift from a victim to a survivor mentality. This empowered her to choose how she wanted to frame her experience. These traits enabled her to help others through her clinical work and storytelling, she said. As a psychologist, she encouraged her clients to treat everything as a learning experience and a chance to grow. "It's very, very important the way you think because that can make or break your life," she said. You have to be your own cheerleader, she said, and remember that everything in life is temporary and you can survive it. Researchers at the Complutense University of Madrid who studied shared traits among centenarians found that focusing on the positives in life was common in this group. During the Holocaust, her purpose was to survive the horrors inflicted on her. Since then, it has been to share the lessons she learned, he said, so it wasn't all for nothing. "She's very committed to doing the work," he said. Having a strong purpose, be it work, religion, or social responsibility, is a common theme among healthy older people. Sometimes it takes the form of having her hair and makeup done or getting regular massages. Engle said that Eger has always taken time to make herself look good. "She's never given up on her, it's not vanity, it's on her sense of self, being a beautiful woman, and making sure that she presents herself in a certain way," he said.
