The Truth About Why Joss Whedon Called Marvel "Cheap" We really don't want to say that Whedon is right, but in this circumstance he is. BY HANNAH WIGANDT PUBLISHED FEB 20, 2021 Right now, you might be thinking: How was Joss Whedon allowed to make not one superhero team-up film but two, in separate rival superhero franchises, Marvel and D.C., after what he did on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Justice League? We know Hollywood is notoriously misogynistic. But it just seems a little unfair that Whedon was able to slip through the cracks and allowed to make two Marvel films and then, later on, D.C.'s Justice League, where he was first called out for his comments on set by Ray Fisher. After everything that's recently come to light about the director, hearing that Whedon complained about his paycheck on his Marvel films doesn't really help his case right now. But in this case, Whedon is right about a couple of things in regards to how Marvel pays its actors and directors. Here's the truth about why Whedon thinks Marvel is "cheap." Whedon on set of 'Avengers.'Via: Slash Film Fans And Critics Were Surprised That Whedon Was Chosen To Direct 'Avengers' In 2010, it made the news that Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator, Joss Whedon, was going to direct the biggest Marvel movie ever (at that point), The Avengers. Fans had been waiting for a team-up film ever since the MCU's creation. A film that combined the forces of Iron Man, the father of the franchise, Captain America, Thor, and others. But Whedon? Buffy fan's ears perked up at the announcement, but everyone else kinda scratched their heads in confusion. He was virtually unknown, having only really done television, and literally only one film called Serenity in 2005. He’s an interesting choice: despite his writing/producing TV series resume, his lone feature directing effort, Serenity, was not a hit." Avengers when on to gross over $1.5 billion worldwide and, at the time, became the fourth highest-grossing film in history. So Whedon had to have done something right. Whedon on set.Via: Film Mashable wrote, "The hallmark of any Joss Whedon joint, besides his usual lively ensemble banter, is the self-aware winks embedded within: Just when it seems like that superhero team-up will collapse beneath the weight of its own absurdity, Whedon drops a knowing meta-bomb, and everything is back in balance." "Instead of inserting a comic-relief character who pricks the balloon, Whedon builds subversion into everyone." RELATED: The Strange Story Of How Joss Whedon Got A Successful TV Show Cancelled Whedon received rave reviews for his work. But apparently, it wasn't all sunshine and daisies for the writer and director. He Thinks He Was Stiffed On 'Avengers' Three years after Avengers, Whedon claimed he was stiffed for his work on the film. He said that he made more money from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, his independently-financed musical series. "I made more money off Dr. Horrible than the first Avengers movie," said Whedon during a Q&A at Paleyfest NY at the Paley Center for Media. Whedon on set.Via: NY Daily News Avengers had a $220 million production budget, after all, and Robert Downey Jr. received $50 million of it and another $20 to $30 million after it premiered, reported Deadline. This isn't the first time Whedon has spoken out about being underpaid. "They are in the business of hiring the guy who hasn’t had a big success because they don’t have to pay that guy very much," Whedon told the Wall Street Journal. Howard was set to earn $8 million for Iron Man 2, but when Cheadle took over, they only offered him $1 million. Whedon on set.Via: Maxim The contradictory thing though is that Whedon told Deadline that he was "doing okay" compensation-wise. Sources told them that Whedon was reportedly set to make a deal for $1 million for Avengers 2 and "for a combination of product and services including several pics, consulting work, a put pilot at ABC, and many other elements that effectively take him off the marketplace for years and years." "Marvel can be very cheap, God knows," he continued. "They can also be sensible and frugal. They have a very small infrastructure and they’re not heaping this money on themselves. I don’t know a producer who’s done more and is paid less than Kevin Feige. I think that it’s an issue but it’s part of a bigger issue, which is there was a time when there was a crisis in the acting community where stars were getting $20 million and character actors were disappearing as a concept." After the story was released, however, Whedon saw that they'd reported he'd cut a deal for $100 million for Avengers 2 and set the record straight on his blog. Whedon.Via: Den of Geek "I was going to let it slide, but I’ve got this sour taste in my mouth. (Mmmm, lemonade!). Some facts are not facts," he wrote. "I’m not going to go into the whole thing, but jeepers, I’m not getting $100 mil on Avengers 2. If I were, I would come on this site and laugh and laugh and laugh. I’m not making Downey money. I’m making A LOT, which is exciting. I’m not pretending to be a poor farmer, an Everyman, an ANYman. But that number is nuts." What the article was stating though was that Whedon would get $100 million for multiple projects along with Avengers 2, over a couple of years. The writer says it right at the end. It's a misunderstanding, clearly, but it's still contradictory that Whedon would say he was "doing okay" and then complain about his paycheck. The thing to take away from all this, though, is that Whedon is technically right. Marvel is cheap, everyone knows it. As compared to some, Whedon got a pretty fair deal but made a stink and jumped on the bandwagon anyway. If he thought he'd be better off at D.C., now being a veteran blockbuster maker, he was sadly wrong. He just proved he was abusive. Look where it's gotten him now.
