The legend filmmaker was speaking at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film & TV Festival keynote conversation with podcaster Sean Fennessey yesterday when they got onto the topic of aliens. The logline reads: ‘If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?’ When questioned on the idea himself, Spielberg said: ‘I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now – and I made a movie about that.’ Spielberg, 79, referenced the comments that former US President Barack Obama made about aliens being ‘real’. The director joked that on hearing this he thought: ‘Oh, my God, this is so great for Disclosure Day!’ He went on: ‘And two days later, he stepped it back to to say what he believed was in life in the cosmos – which, of course, everybody should believe in.’ Metro Disclosure Day official trailer What did you steal? In the same chat, Spielberg made reference to Timothée Chalamet’s comments about ballet and opera that keep creating headlines. Spielberg has become the latest figure to say his piece about the respected art forms that Chalamet seemed to dismiss in an interview with Matthew McConaughey. Fast forward a couple of weeks from the chat going live, and Spielberg made his own little dig. Similarly to Chalamet, the 79-year-old was talking about the importance of cinemas and film, but he managed to dodge offending other mediums while doing so: ‘For me, the real experience comes when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers. And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way.’ The audience laughed, according to Variety, who said that the line was delivered with a grin from Spielberg. At the end of last month, in a town hall conversation between Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey hosted by Variety and CNN, the Marty Supreme actor was also talking about his love for film and the need to keep cinemas going: ‘I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it’s like, “Keep this thing alive even though no-one cares about this any more”.’ Timothée Chalamet is up for best actor at the Oscars tomorrow (Picture: Patrick T. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.’ In response, many have come out in defence of these centuries-old creative expressions. Got a story?
