Evening Standard 475.6K Followers The Dune 3 trailer is here — but what actually happens in the books? Story by Vicky Jessop • 5d • 4 min read Denis Villeneuve doesn’t sleep. Two years after releasing Dune 2, the trailer for Dune 3 has finally dropped – ahead of the film launching in cinemas in December. It looks appropriately epic and looks to be continuing some of the biggest dangling plot threads from the film series. Define Your Legacy with an AuD Define Your Legacy with an AuD A.T. At the end of Dune 2, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) drank the Water of Life, gained the power to predict the future and killed Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler) in single combat, thereby gaining control of the planet of Arrakis. With the Fremen under his command, he set off on a holy war, forcibly married the Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) and flew off to become emperor of the universe. But what happens next? Well, we have a roadmap of sorts, because the film looks to be a loose adaptation of the next book in the Dune series, Dune Messiah. Villenueve has dropped a few hints of his own about what lies ahead. He’s said that the essence of the new film boils down to: “in order to save his friends, [Paul] has to start a war.” “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what [Herbert] wanted to do,” he added. “My adaptation is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.” He’s also said that this will be the last Dune film he makes – so with that in mind, what do we have to look forward to? (Warner Bros) (Warner Bros) Warning: spoilers ahead The book itself spans decades and opens 12 years after the events of Dune. Paul Atreides is now the emperor of most of the universe, but it’s come at a cost: the holy war he started, with the help of the Atreides nuclear vault and the Fremen, has killed 61 billion people. But it’s a marriage of convenience, not love (Paul and Chani are still in a relationship) – and he refuses to have any children with her. Princess Irulan is one of the Bene Gesserit order of sisters, and in retaliation, she sneaks contraceptives into Chani’s food. This means Chani can’t have children, but, desperate to do so, she switches to a traditional Fremen diet and eventually does get pregnant. With her reproductive system damaged by Irulan, she dies in childbirth, having two twins – Leto II and Ghanima (played here by Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke). At the same time, the Bene Gesserit are plotting to bring down Paul, and to do so, they team up with the Spacing Guild and a mysterious civilisation obsessed with genetic engineering, called the Tleilaxu. They give Paul a gift in the form of a clone of Duncan Idaho, his old Swordmaster (again played by Jason Momoa). Confusingly, he’s also called Hayt, and he’s being overseen by a sinister Tleilaxu agent called Scytale (played in the upcoming film by Robert Pattinson). At the same time, Paul’s sister Alia (Anya Taylor-Joy) is also building a reputation for herself. In the events of the Dune book, she’s born with the consciousness of a Reverend Mother. By the age of four, she’s killed Baron Harkonnen by herself, and is worshipped as a saint by the Fremen. Top Tier Content Solution - People Inc. For a while, he’s able to ‘see’ through his visions, but this comes to an end when Chani dies, and Paul manages to escape a Tleilaxu trap that eventually nullifies his visions, too. Unable to rule, he walks off into the desert to become a lone hermit, intending for his sister Alia to become Regent, and for his children to eventually take over the empire. Will there be more films after Dune 3? There might be – but Villenueve won’t be adapting them. He spoke originally of writing a trilogy, and looks to be fairly certain that this will be his last Dune film. “I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books,” he said to Vanity Fair. “They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a bit more tricky to adapt, but I’m not closing the door. I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.” To receive the best stories in your inbox every day, click here to register for one or more newsletters from The Standard.
