Val Kilmer’s daughter says his return for Top Gun: Maverick was ‘extraordinary’ after actor’s cancer battle Comment author image Louise Griffin Wednesday 25 May 2022 3:51 pm Val Kilmer and daughter Val Kilmer’s daughter Mercedes celebrated her dad’s return to Top Gun (Picture: Paramount/Getty) Val Kilmer’s daughter Mercedes has spoken out about her father’s ‘extraordinary’ return to the Top Gun franchise after his battle with cancer. The actor reprised his role as Iceman, coming face to face once again with Tom Cruise’s Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. ‘I was on set. I saw it live, and it was extraordinary,’ Mercedes, 30, said. She added to The New York Post: ‘It was trippy, and very special for my dad to be on set with all of his friends who made this movie when they were my age.’ Val’s return was especially tricky as he lost his voice following his diagnosis with throat cancer in 2017. He underwent an emergency tracheotomy during which doctors made an incision in his windpipe to allow him to breathe. The scene with Tom was reportedly digitally altered so as Val could be heard clearly. Thankfully, Val has been cancer-free now for around six years. The actor first starred in Top Gun in 1986, when he was 26, returning to the role this year at the age of 62. Tom previously told Metro.co.uk about the glorious reunion, saying: ‘It was lovely. The whole experience, you know, 36 years to make this film. There were so many moments in making it that were very special, incredibly unique. ‘He’s an actor that I greatly admire, so it was wonderful.’ Producer David Ellison, who’s previously worked with Tom on films including Jack Reacher and the Mission: Impossible franchise, said that Maverick and Iceman’s scene was his ‘favourite in the movie’. ‘The first movie made me want to become a pilot. This was the first movie when we originally started working with Paramount 12 years ago we said we wanted to make,’ he said. It was a surreal experience.’ After the cast of Top Gun: Maverick appeared at the Cannes Film Festival, Val celebrated the release of the film, tagging Tom as he tweeted: ‘Congratulations old pal. Well deserved reception. Here’s looking forward to another 36 years of fun!’ Top Gun: Maverick follows on from the first film, released in 1986. It catches up with Pete as he’s training graduates – but he’ll have to confront the ghosts of his past and his fears for one particularly terrifying mission. Top Gun: Maverick hits cinemas on May 25.
