Treasure Island (1990)Amazon
Filmmaking duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz are teaming up with Disney to make a new version of Treasure Island. The duo, who previously directed the critically acclaimed film The Peanut Butter Falcon, have been making a splash in Hollywood recently, and their new film, Los Frikis, is arriving this Christmas.
Schwartz and Nilson'sTreasure Island project is currently in development, so there are not many details yet. The directors spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to promote Los Frikis and teased the upcoming collaboration. Nilson said their pitch “has the patina of the 1970s surf world.” This could hint to a more modern riff on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. Schwartz further described their approach, saying:
“It’s an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island, and if they [Disney] ever make it, it would be so fun. It has the vibes that we do, and there’s found family, brotherhood, drama and outsider energy,”
Schwartz and Nilson also directed 2019's critically acclaimed indie film The Peanut Butter Falcon starring Zack Gottsagen, Shia LaBeouf, and Dakota Johnson. The story follows a young man with Down syndrome after he runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a pro-wrestler, befriending an outlaw who becomes his coach. In many ways, the story is comparable to Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Schwartz and Nilson's work in Peanut Butter Falcon makes them a great pick for another intriguing approach to a classic story.
Treasure Island, originally titled The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys, is a historical adventure novel written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. This is also not the first time Disney has adapted the story. There was a 1950 film adaptation starring Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins, a young boy who finds a map to the coveted treasure of the notorious pirate Captain Flint. There's also Disney's 2002 animated cult classic Treasure Planet, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Martin Short, and Emma Thompson voicing the main cast. While not a hit at the time, audiences now love the adaptation for its unique genre-blending approach and steampunk aesthetic. The story placed the swashbuckling adventure in a futuristic space setting created using 2D and 3D animation. Treasure Island is also a coming-of-age story with action, excitement, danger, rambunctious characters, buccaneering, buried gold, and more. It's still early days for the project, but here's hoping there are no rough seas ahead.
Schwartz and Nilson Refine Their Filmmaking Style in Los Frikis
Schwartz and Nilson have been praised for their ability to create atmosphere with their films that feature locations that feel untouched and "road trip" stories that feel vibrant and authentic. Los Frikis especially showcases a balance of youthful optimism with more serious subject matter.
Written and directed by the duo, Los Frikis is inspired by true events. The film tells the story of a group of bandmates and is set against the backdrop of the punk rock wave in '90s Cuba. The unforgettable coming-of-age story centers around Gustavo, a boy who idolizes his older brother Paco and his punk bandmates. The story follows the group as oppression and extreme poverty push "los Frikis" to desperate measures. In an act of defiance, the group intentionally inject themselves with HIV to gain refuge in a government-run sanatorium. In that dark place, they manage to carve out their own sanctuary of community, joy, freedom, and acceptance.
The Miami film festival described Los Frikis as being "Anchored by both a palpable sense of dread and a youthful spirit of hope." Academy-Award winning producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie) are attached to the film. The movie stars Adria Arjona, Héctor Medina, and introduces Eros de la Puente, with Luis Alberto García and Jorge Perugorría rounding out the main cast. Los Frikis lands in Theaters Dec. 25.
