Though it was originally conceived as a standalone film, it seems that Joker's director now has some ideas for a follow-up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has signed Joker's co-writer and director Todd Phillips to pen a sequel to the 2019 comic book film.
The prospect of a Joker sequel was floated by Phillips around the time of its release. In December 2019, Phillips had said that there were no current plans for a follow-up but voiced his belief that Warner Bros. was giving him time to come up with an idea.
"Well there was [that push] even before Joker came out. A movie does that kind of business and became that beloved around the world – they had talked to us about it," Phillips said. "Joaquin [Phoenix] and I had spoken about it anyway as far back as when we were shooting the movie. But in all honesty we haven't gone any further on it. Even Warner Bros. hasn't. I think they're just giving us time, and if we can figure it out, and if Joaquin's down to do it, we would do it. But we haven't gotten near that yet."

Phillips has also stated that he would not return for a Joker sequel unless he could find "some thematic resonance in a similar way that [the first movie] does."
A large question mark with the prospect of a Joker sequel is Joaquin Phoenix's return to the role. While the actor has largely avoided long-term franchise attachments throughout his career, Phoenix has stated that he is open to the idea of a sequel.
"I talked to Todd a lot about what else we might be able to do, in general, just to work together, but also specifically, if there’s something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting,” Phoenix said. “I don’t know that there is [more to do]. Me and Todd would still be shooting now if we could, right? Because it seemed endless, the possibilities of where we can go with the character.”
Phillips has also stated that Phoenix would be integral to a Joker sequel. "One thing I will tell you: I would do anything with Joaquin, any day of the week."

Joker was a massive success for Warner Bros. when it released in October 2019. The film became the first R-rated movie to gross over $1 billion worldwide, as well as the most profitable comic book film of all time. The film went on to garner 11 Oscar nominations, winning in the categories of Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score.
In our review of Joker, IGN gave the movie a 10, praising "Phoenix's fully committed performance and Todd Phillips' masterful albeit loose reinvention of the DC source material."

Cool idea: Each Joker sequel tells a different story about how Joaquin Phoenix becomes The Joker. That way each sequel is fresh, and gives Joaquin the opportunity to do something different with the character. It also stays true to the trope that Joker has no true origin story.

Awesome idea, but I’m not sure that they can pull this off. The one prevalent criticism of the movie is that it was hardly a Joker movie at all. I think we are more likely to see full on Joker this time, maybe with a focus on how he evolves as a villain and goes on to manipulate others.

I agree. Continuing the first movies plot seems like it would just try too hard. Very cool idea.

Frankly, I’d rather see a Batman movie that examines the character through the same themes of mental health, income inequality, and societal unrest the way the first film examined the Joker. Batman would almost certainly have a different outlook on those topics than the Joker would, which would properly set them up as ideological foils for a third movie wherein they go against each other. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll definitely go to see this regardless of how it turns out, but that seems like the best way to expand upon the world Phillips created with the first film.

Joker was decent, but I feel like people put it up on a pedestal and act like it’s better than it is. It was literally just a darker rehash of The King of Comedy with some elements from Taxi Driver, and the Joker character tossed into it. Hoping a sequel will have more original ideas.

Yeah, but it was supposed to be Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. It never hid from that. They literally got DeNiro and Scorsese. The movie absolutely blows away the king of comedy in every respect. Joker is one of those rare movies where it wasn't one or two things that made it great. So many people gave their best work. I'd argue the score was just as good as Phoenix. Only problem I had was a bit of the editing. Should have clipped the final sequence.

It really wasn't that great as a Joker movie.
As a showcase for Phoenix's acting ability, it was awesome.

It was an eerie feeling in the cinema watching this one. I was there on a weekday with only a handful of people in an IMAX theatre and I just felt so tense leaving after the credits. When I watched again at home, the only other time I've seen it since, it felt like an arthouse flick that was silly and a bit more cringe, too on-the-nose about things. In summary, the film is better served as a one-off event where you go in knowing nothing. Any sequel already has "try to top that" written all over it.

I disagree. I thought it was brilliant and I enjoyed the second viewing more. But seeing it in theaters was tense like you said. I saw it along a sold out showing tho. It was creepy. The way the audience broke out in loud delight when Joker starting killing. It was scary to see so many people practically feel like they were in the movie and were so happy when the Joker started killing. Just a very American thing. I don't think the intention was to root for the Joker to kill. It was watching the degradation of a man with mental problems and bad luck descend. I felt sorry for him.

I felt the joker was a new version of falling down. Other than "the Joker" being the title, you could've placed this movie anywhere, about anyone who has a "bad day" and it would've came out the same. There was no mention of other criminals or heroes, etc.
If this movie was called Franklin, would it have done as well or have been just as lauded?

Yeah, except Falling Down was simply a kind of entertaining movie while Joker was so brilliant it became the first super hero movie to dominate the Oscar conversation.

I'm old enough to have seen Falling Down in the theaters and what's interesting is that while the audience understood why the lead character snapped, they weren't cheering him on to go on a killing spree. It deeply bothers me how many people seem to have this reaction with Joker. I'm hoping it's only because they came in already in love with DC character.

I don’t see why people do so obsessed with this movie. It was not special and nothing that even has anything to do with Joker.

Joker was alright, or even boring at some scene, not sure why people praising it so much, maybe because of society?

It touched on a lot of current social issues without really saying anything and this allowed for people on both sides of the political spectrum to read what they wanted to in it. It's actually funny being in a room with them talking it up and sounding like they're describing two very different movies.

This film does not need a sequel. Like Jurassic Park and the Matrix this is a perfect example of a film that should be a 'one and done'.

Are you Tim Burton's fan? I love his films too, but Joker had something special - perhaps most interesting thing was Joaquin's performance. He's a great actor.

That is the idea, not going to be for all though. How many movies do I need to see with a joke thrown in every 2 minutes? There are lots like that these days
