The picture will chart the rise and fall of Gen. George Armstrong Custer. It will trace Custer's relationship with his wife, Libby, as well as his demise at the Battle of Little Big Horn. New Line Cinema paid $3million for the rights to the book by Dances With Wolves author/screenwriter Michael Blake.
Gonzo journalist returns to edit article at magazine that fired him
Time magazine fired Hunter S. Thompson nearly 40 years ago from his job as a copyboy. But he returned to the news magazine this month to edit an article personally. Thompson was accompanied by actor Johnny Depp and singer-actor Lyle Lovett. Thompson, chronicler of all things ''gonzo'' by way of his first-person style of journalism, said, ''The editing was a good time, it was total participation and very bold of Time.'' The story is Thompson's account of his experiences on the sets of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the film version of his 1971 book, which will premiere in the spring and stars Depp as Thompson.

'Beowulf' leaps across centuries in futuristic, techno-feudal film
With an ancient Transylvanian castle as location, principal photography has begun on Beowulf, a futuristic adaptation of the Old English folk epic with Christopher Lambert in the lead role. ''We're using a really bizarre, beautiful old castle, and we're adding a 3-D digital matte to it,'' said producer Larry Kasanoff. ''We've created what I call a techno-feudal future, set 1,000 years from now.''
