History Of Silver Age Comic Books

When you are browsing the racks at your local comic book store and happen upon Silver Age comic books for sale, you may wonder just what it is that makes them ‘silver’. The term ‘Silver Age’ refers to a general time period in which the comic books were originally available. The Silver Age is commonly considered to have begun in 1956 and to have lasted until about 1975. Many people consider DC ComicsShowcase Number 4 to be the beginning of the Silver Age. The Silver Age was preceded by the Golden Age and followed by the Bronze and then the Modern Ages.
The Silver Age is significant because marks a period in the history of comic books when comic books sales had been struggling after controversy and finger-pointing regarding a link between adolescent violence and the reading of comic books. The Silver Age saw a reemergence of superheroes. Those new (or newly revised) superheroes are still popular among many of the general public today. The heroes of the Silver Age were markedly flawed, as opposed to the highly positive heroes of the Golden Age. The superheroes of the Silver Age were more relatable to many of the readers because, along with their super powers, the heroes also had human frailties and were often tormented by unresolved issues from their past. Many Silver Age heroes were linked in some way to outer space and other science-related subjects.
