'Wonder Woman' Is An Origin Tale And A Love Story, Says Patty Jenkins

‘Wonder Woman’ Is An Origin Tale And A Love Story, Says Patty Jenkins

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has been wanting to make a movie about the DC Comics character ever since her 2003 movie Monster, believe it or not. After that film, she was asked what she would like to do next, and it turns out her answer was Wonder Woman.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Patty Jenkins reveals her vision for Wonder Woman was always an origin story and a love story for Diana Prince and Steve Trevor.

Jenkins revealed that she actually had the opportunity to make her dream Wonder Woman project back in 2005. It all seemed good, but the only problem was the fact that she was pregnant with her son. Rather than spend a year and a half on set completely unavailable, which she knew she would be, she decided to opt out of the project. But as fate would have it, Patty got her second chance.
“I didn’t want to do anything more complicated,” Jenkins said. “From my point of view, this was the movie I was talking to them about for about eight or nine years. I’ve met with 10 different people at Warner Bros. and then it all came together in this one moment.”
But if Patty Jenkins had directed Thor: The Dark World, this vision of the Wonder Woman movie may not have happened.
Jenkins was tapped to direct the sequel to 2011’s Thor by Marvel Studios, and she had signed onto the project and was ready to go. But creative differences led to her walking away from the film, which was later directed by Alan Taylor.

Following Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Warner Bros. announcing Batman v Superman, the DC Extended Universe was finally being fleshed out, which meant Wonder Woman would be getting her own film. Director Michelle MacLaren signed on to helm the project, but much like Jenkins leaving The Dark World, MacLaren left Wonder Woman due to creative differences.
Patty Jenkins signed on to replace her days later.
“There was a period of time when we had two very different visions and I wanted them to find the right director for the job,” Jenkins said. “It turned out we had a shared vision after all.”
From Wonder Woman‘s plot synopsis, we can assume that Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor will somehow find himself on the mysterious island of Themyscira, and recruit the help of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman to help fight the battle of the first World War.
“Part of the reason I’m in such a good mood is this is the movie I’ve wanted to make my entire life,” Jenkins said. “I feel so grateful that I get to be able to do this.”

Actress Gal Gadot recently described the character as “a young idealist who’s been taught that the world is very simple: it’s black or white, bad or good.” And it looks like her adventure with Steve Trevor will help teach her the complexities of human life.
“But once she falls in love and starts her journey with Steven Trevor, he educates her about the complexity of mankind.”
Fans can expect to get more info on Wonder Woman at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and they may be lucky enough to get some exclusive footage as well.
Along with Gal Gadot as the lead, the wonderful cast includes Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner, as well as Saïd Taghmaoui. Patty Jenkins is directing from a screenplay penned by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, with story credit going to Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg.
Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 2, 2017.
