The Independence Day: Resurgence trailer interrupted my Seattle Seahawks game today. Not one money shot in the entire 90 second spot. Run-of-the-mill CGI that had a good deal of detail but not much imagination. Strangely bland.

Very cool news indeed! The acting in that first Phantasm is utterly dismal, but the movie was huge with the kids my age (and Abrams' age) back in the 70s. I had terrible nightmares after I finally saw it on TV.

RAVAGER and the restoration are two different things. One is not affected by the other.
Never cared for this movie but the BNAT'ers have been tweeting that the restoration is outstanding. Good for the fans.

Considering the 70s you get lots of artifacts like the Grindhouse joints flicks like Machete emulated. Aside that theres digital editing with color balance and correction to a degree where you don't create artifacts like banding, sharpening to a degree that you don't get aliasing, just to name a few. In cases like Highlander 2, they may mask a background out and composite a new one in. On top of all this, theres a consistency check between shots. And finally, more color correction and editing. You may notice certain things at the end like the color of faces can be oversaturated in some scenes (full of color) or closer to montone i.e. a movie like Di Caprio Romeo & Juliet Vs Fury or Sin City.
With enough time, patience, and a good (well preserved, intact, no reels lost in fire, etc.) negative, you can make any movie look better than when it was released in theaters. Cameron's Aliens wasn't released in 4K for instance, or even 4K mastered compressed down to 1080 like the last Robocop remaster or Sonys "4K" (more 4K compressed to 1080) like Ghostbusters and Raimi Spider-man, but in the case of Aliens in general, it looks like it could've been released 2000-2005 as opposed to the 80s.

instead of transferring to 1080 digital they transfer to 4k digital. Then, they scale it down to 1080 for release. 4k ain't here yet.

The "4K" line up like Ghostbusters, Robocop, Amazing Spider-man all have digital uncompressed 4K masters, its just a matter of pushing 4K players which they will do soon. With newer movies filmed digitally, this is much easier. All thats left is the UBR players which will cost a shit ton but will go down in price eventually like everything else. Got it a few years ago for 3K (and it was on sale for 1K off), but now, you can get that particular model for around 1K. I've seen some models now go as low as $500 or $600 without any bells or whistles. What sucks is that, as you point out, there are currently no ultra BR players or discs, only 4K streaming services (I watch Amazon Prime Ultra HD and Netflix Ultra HD), but they only have, like, a few dozen choices, a handful of some of them odd. Like who wants to rewatch Jerry Maguire in 4K? I'm hoping they offer Phantasm through one of these streaming choices.

that is cool news for always thought phantasm could not really be appriciated as the true horror film it is nor the tall man and his spears of death till some one decided to restore a print to its original glory though hope the ones doing the restoration don't tick off the tall man in the end

The average person will hardly notice. The jump from 1080p to 4K is not noticeable unless you have a 65" TV or better.
The general public will NOT lap this up. (Also the lack of actual CONTENT is a big deal breaker- imagine trying to sell someone a 4K TV but telling them they can't watch anything in 4K except a few things... And if they want 4K content, they have sign-on for new services that cost even more money To deliver that content at high bandwidth)
