Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
Before I launch into today’s screening opportunity, there is still time to enter yesterday’s contest for seats to Martin Scorsese’s SILENCE. Click here to enter!
Writer-director Jim Jarmusch has been making movies as long as I’ve cared deeply about film. In the 1980s, Jarmusch released four films that remain some of my favorites of his: PERMANENT VACATION, STRANGER THAN PARADISE, DOWN BY LAW, and MYSTERY TRAIN. And then every few years, he just unleashes another work that find new ways of reminding us just how powerful a visual artist and storyteller he can be, including NIGHT ON EARTH, DEAD MAN, GHOST DOG, COFFEE AND CIGARETTES, BROKEN FLOWERS, THE LIMITS OF CONTROL, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, and earlier this year, his documentary on The Stooges, GIMME DANGER.
And now he’s dropped another small masterpiece into the world with PATERSON, a quiet, lovely, but truly profound look at the inner artist in all of us, and how breaking one’s day-to-day routine can often lead to marvelous discoveries about the world at large. The film focuses on a bus driver named Paterson (Adam Driver, in easily the finest performance of his career) who happens to live in the city of Paterson, New Jersey (no relation). He has a work routine but makes time every day to write poetry, drink a single beer at his local bar, and spend time with wife Laura (the fantastic Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani). And as he often does, Jarmusch finds the magic, humor, melancholy and revelation in the everyday. It’s a remarkable film that has been landing on a lot of critics’ Best of the Year lists, and with good reason.
And wouldn’t you know it, I have a limited number of seats for an early Chicago screening of PATERSON for Ain’t It Cool News readers on Wednesday, January 4 at 7:30pm at a theater in Chicago (the exact location will only be given to the winners). Here’s how to win…
To win, send me an email at CaponeChicago@aintitcoolmail.com (please note the new email address) with the subject line “PATERSON” (exactly like that). In the body of the email, I need your full Name, if you are bringing a guest (each winner may bring ONE, confirmed guest--if I think you gave your extra ticket to someone trolling for free tickets at the theater, I’ll turn you away at the door), and the answer to the following question: “What was your favorite male performance in 2016, and why?” I need an actor’s name, the film title, and a detailed reason for your choice. Keep your responses BRIEF--no more than 75 words (no matter how tempted you are to go over the limit). Best answers (as judged by me) win, and you'll hear from me very soon, so check your email over the weekend.
Although this is not an exclusive Ain't It Cool News event, winners’ seats will be reserved until 30 minutes before showtime (meaning 7:00pm). The venue is deliberately overbooked to guarantee a full house. If you can't arrive by 7:00pm, don't enter this contest. If you show up at the last minute, there is no guarantee that your seats will be good or together. If there's even the slightest chance you or your guests will have to back out of attending or arrive late if you do win, don't enter. If you have a job that might make you late or unable to attend, or an ill/pregnant relative, or a temperamental significant other, or a scratchy throat, do not enter. And the 24-hour-notice-to-cancel rule is done. If you win and don't show up, the Black List is your new best friend.
Good luck, everyone! And thanks to the Bleeker Street Media and Amazon Studios for bringing this very cool screening to Chicago.
