Pro-Castro vigil held in Vancouver
1/14
About a hundred people held candles and flowers at a rain-soaked vigil to commemorate the life and legacy of Fidel Castro in downtown Vancouver on Sunday.
As debate raged over the former Cuban leader’s controversial legacy, attendees at the pro-Castro vigil praised the revolutionary figure’s contributions to his nation’s education and health care, and his cordial relationship with Canada.
Organizer Tamara Hansen of Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba said Vancouver is home to a very small Cuban community. Only two of the attendees were from Cuba, she said; the majority were from other Latin American countries, mostly El Salvador, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau drew criticism for his comments on Castro’s death, which made no mention of Castro’s role as a dictator and for his regime’s human-rights violations.
